Audra McDonald signs on for "Private Practice"

Don't you hate it when your little-known special favorite undiscovered talent hits the big time? I mean, there you are, nurturing your fandom even when nobody else cares, remaining true to the cause even when all hope is lost — and then, BAM, your personal project gets a huge break and everybody starts shouting her name and you look like just another member of the unwashed masses.

I think that's about to happen to me with Audra McDonald. The Broadway star, heretofore reserved for me and Rosie O'Donnell and my girlfriend (no, we're not all the same person) and theater aficionados, has landed a role that will make her a household name. McDonald will play the BFF of Dr. Addison Montgomery (Kate Walsh) in the Grey's Anatomy spin-off Private Practice.

In the spin-off pilot — technically a May episode of Grey's — the character of Dr. Naomi Bennett was played by Merrin Dungey, aka Francie on Alias. According to the L.A. Times, "No reason was given for the change in direction" from Dungey to McDonald. It seems to have something to do with "fine tuning," which is obviously fine for McDonald and less than fine for Dungey. Francie doesn't like coffee ice cream or fine tuning!

But anyway, yeah, OK: Audra deserves this. And then some. But unless Dr. Bennett is going to be a singing fertility specialist who breaks into an aria every time someone gets pregnant, we're going to be deprived of McDonald's true talent. She won three Tony Awards before the age of 30, and that's incredible.

For me, the upshot of this news is twofold: (1) I will now be tuning in for a show I hadn't really intended to watch, and (2) The next time I see Audra on the sidewalk after a Barbra Streisand show (like I did last October, in a totally dorky oh-my-god-I-can't-speak-she's-so-gorgeous way — and to make matters better, she was leaving with Diana Krall, who was perfectly civil to my girlfriend when she asked whether they had been backstage), it will be as part of a mob rather than as part of a small but dedicated fan base. Somehow I'll soldier on.

    I adore ...

Audra McDonald. Now I will have two good reasons to watch Private Practice, Audra, and those teaser shots of Santa Monica, my home away from home.

    She deserves it, but....

I hate to see her become famous because we share the same first name, and now it will become more common. I love having an unusual name and don't want to share!!!

Maybe I'll have to change my name to Merrin. What's up with the Private Practice powers that be dumping Merrin Dungey anyway? They better be careful. She might just go all Evil Francie on their ass.

    Yeah!

I always thought I was the only one that hated it when that happened! I often have that with music though.

But I think she deserves it, although I understand how you feel;)

    I completely adore Audra

I completely adore Audra McDonald. I saw her in A Raisin in th Sun a few years back, and was completely in awe of her performance (and even more of Phylicia Rashad, but that's beside the point). She is completely amazing, and I'm definitely going to be watching Private Practice now!

If only Callie could break into "Diva's Lament" like, whenever.

Kinda like Sara Ramirez's wasted talent as the non-singing Callie. Damn, girl didn't win that Tony for nothing.

    OH DR. TORRES!

I just told my g/f the other day that it makes me laugh to hear her sing find your grail because everytime I hear it, it makes me think of Callie dancing in her skivvies in the Seattle Grace basement!!!  :)  SUCH A VOICE!

    love audra mcdonald!

    nice.  good for her!

wanna know who i think should be the next awesome stage actress to come to american prime-time?  (probably not, but here goes):

    LEA SALONGA!!!

she's AMAZING!  she's all over youtube, so everyone should check her out.  she's the best living vocalist out there -- her voice is so pure!

you probably know of her work if you don't know who she is.  she does the singing for the princess in disney's aladdin, among other things.

    I love that woman.

I love that woman. But I also love Merrin, so I have quite a conflict with this. Suppose it's okay in the end. Broadway stars are taking over our tv screens this year, I love it. We now have Audra on Private Practice, Sutton Foster on Flight of the Conchords, and a threesome on Pushing Daisies with Swoosie Kurtz, Ellen Greene and Kristin Chenoweth! And let's not forget the ones who have been able to thankfully stick around... Sara on Grey's, John Barrowman on Doctor Who/Torchwood, and of course Mandy Patinkin on Criminal Minds.

    I can top you all

    Not that I'm into that.

I saw her way back when in Ragtime & Master Class. And my gf saw her in Secret Garden. My gf has always said she'd leave me for Audra. I live with it.

    *ahem*

She's done TV before. Mister Sterling.

I also love Audra.  The big

I also love Audra.  The big loss for me is that this means it'll be awhile before she come back to broadway and I've never seen her live.  And my sister has (in Ragtime, no less!).  I hate it when my sister can show me up!

But at least I have seen Idina Menzel on stage (swoon!) and I can hold that over her.
