Alanis Morissette is famousOn Monday, organizers announced that Alanis Morissette will be inducted into the Canadian Music Industry Hall of Fame. The honors will be bestowed at a ceremony on March 7, during Canadian Music Week.
Morissette will also receive a lifetime achievement award at the event. Yes, lifetime, even though she's only 33 years old. Does this mean they want her to retire?
I don't think I understand halls of fame generally. Are they meant to recognize fame itself, or talent? And does it make any sense that Alanis is getting inducted the same year as Gordon Lightfoot? That guy has been around forever, reading minds and taking care at sundown. He probably should have been honored (or honoured) long ago; it's not like he had a sudden burst of fame in 2007. (But he is still touring.) Morissette accolades aside, I'm glad to know about Canadian Music Week. On my iPod, most weeks are Canadian Music Week, because I swear there's something in the air there that produces extraordinary musicians. For example, past Hall of Fame inductees include Neil Young, Leonard Cohen, Joni Mitchell and Anne Murray. Read me a list of awesomeness, why don't you? And let's not forget newer artists like the incredible Feist (and Broken Social Scene), Kinnie Starr, Holly McNarland, Bif Naked, Sarah Harmer, Martha and Rufus Wainwright, and the Organ (and maybe you've heard of Tegan and Sara). Or icons like Sarah McLachlan, Jann Arden, k.d. lang and Ferron. And during my formative years, I learned a lot from Mary Margaret O'Hara, Parachute Club and Jane Siberry (before she became Issa). Seriously, what is going on up there?
To answer my own question about the criteria for induction, according to the official website, "The Canadian Music Hall of Fame recognizes Canadian artists that have attained commercial success while having a positive impact on the Canadian music scene here at home and around the world."
A positive impact on the Canadian music scene? Well, OK. I think Morissette has also had some impact on AfterEllen.com readers, not only with her music (and gay-ish videos), but also with her lesbian role on Nip/Tuck. And then there was that time she kissed Sarah Jessica Parker on Sex and the City, but that was a little weird. Anyway. Congratulations, Alanis. I hope you don't think you've made anywhere close to enough music for a lifetime. Submitted by on November 28, 2007 - 9:00am. |

I [heart] Alanis
didn't she admit to having
didn't she admit to having had a lesbian affair at one point in her life?
anyway i thought the "crazy" video was very cool because you don't expect the ending...
Yes, yes she did!
She talked about it on Howard Stern. She was actually really great in the interview, and I think because she has a good sense of humor and was willing to be a good sport, Howard didn't give her too much crap. She did say it was someone famous so she wouldn't say who her fling was with... For the time frame I thought it could have been Ellen, but more likely Melissa Ethridge (around the Lilith Fair era). Although, when Alanis was on Ellen's talk show, Ellen made a comment about having one of Alanis' socks. Who knows.
She was very candid and she said that while she enjoyed her experience with another woman, once was enough for her.
Canadian Musicians
I totally agree with you. I have a lot of Canadian musicians on my iPod, and they're all so talented it makes me sick. Like any good lesbian I love Tegan & Sara, but also Feist, Jane Siberry, Kinnie Starr, Joni Mitchell, Rufus Wainwright and The Organ. But my all-time-number-one-favorite singer/songwriter has to be Sarah McLachlan. I'd like to say a lot of really dramatic things to emphasize how much I love her, but I can't without sounding really stupid. So I'll just say she's the only musician who has managed to touch me in a way I never thought was possible.
She needs to go on tour. Dammit. Anyone here seen her in concert? Her dvd's are fan-fucking-tastic.
I saw Sarah live
...it was over a decade ago and she was in-f'ing-credible! If you love her recordings, her live performances will leave you speachless... mmmm
*hits hand to head*
Gyps - you're *such* a lesbian. :p
And thus the whirligig of time brings in his revenges....
I just tell it like it is...
Well, I guess if you put
Well, I guess if you put the "lez" in lesbian, I must put in the bian? hmmmmm ...
And thus the whirligig of time brings in his revenges....
God is Alanis
(well according to Dogma anyways;)
Seriously though, I think it's fantastic that she finally gets some recognition for her work, she very often gets pigeonholed as an "angry female from the nineties", where in fact, she had a tremendous role in revolutionizing the sound and creative freedom of female musicians - so kudos to Alanis.
Her follow-up to Jagged Little Pill, Supposed Former Infatuation Junkie, is probably the best record I’ve ever heard, she is so inventive with words and refreshingly self-aware, not to mention deeply insightful.
And yes, very gay friendly, which is always good in my book.
(If there's still someone left on the planet who hasn't seen the My Humps cover - go to youtube, you won't regret it ;)

Where's Emily Haines??? :(
True Confessions
The first album I had that was all mine (didn't have to share with my sister), was an Anne Murray record. It's true... My musical tastes have changed quite a bit, but I still have a soft spot for Anne. :)
The following Canadians from your list are on my iPod: Martha Wainwright, Feist, Jane Siberry/Issa (saw her in concert two-weeks ago...nice), Joni Mitchell, Alanis, Leonard Cohen. There are probably a lot more folks that hail from the North in my iPod, but I'm too lazy to check. shucks.
sex and the city
Canadian music NOT on your ipod ...
...that you need to check out:
The Weakerthans
Sarah Harmer
The Tragically Hip
The Constantines
Arcade Fire
I wouldn't lie to you - not about something as important as music... I promise. GO. GET. THEM. NOW.
And thus the whirligig of time brings in his revenges....
The Hip!!! And how about Sass Jordan?
I LOVE THE HIP!
I just wish they'd make their way to LA - I STILL have yet to see them in concert, and I've been a fan for YEARS.
I think In Violet Light has to be my *favorite* album ... my favorite song switches around, depending on my mood ... although lately I've been listening to "Beautiful Thing" A LOT.
YAY! Go Hip! Go Canadian Music!
And thus the whirligig of time brings in his revenges....

Isn't it, Scribegrrrl, *isn't* it?
Scribegrrrl, I know the musical thing and fame is a stretch, but I will forever lurrrve
Alanis for the magnificent song "Ironic." OK, the song isn't magnificent. But in a cruel
world of malapropisms and hypercorrection, it's wonderful to have a line to drop when
those around incorrectly assign "ironic" status to sarcasm, parody, banter, etc. I just
say...
..." Yes. Isn't it ALANIS..."
"Nikki. . . .would ask Dawn to poison their food with nuts. 4.She would ask Shell to stab them with a bottle. . . .trolls either kill themselves with toilet paper or die from choking..." (Hearer, "The New Flirting Thread")
I am *so* going to start saying that.
lol good one
Haha nice
Though, it always saddens me that Ironic is her most famous song, it has no substance whatsoever and she has said herself numerous times that it's the least precious song she's ever written - it was more of an experiment between her and her producer. Songs like Joining you, The Couch, Thank U, Perfect and Forgiven, are what makes her awesome.
