The AFI's best of 2007Yesterday, the American Film Institute selected its 10 best films and TV shows of the year. Nobody gets to vote — there are no nominations, no names submitted for anyone's consideration. You might call the lists unilateral. You could also call them surprising. Here are the top films, in no particular order (er, in alphabetical order):
Laura Linney and Philip Seymour Hoffman in The Savages: Atonement didn't make the list because only American films were considered ('cause, uh, it's the American Film Institute). Other current favorites, like Sweeney Todd, just didn't make it. Well, there's no accounting for taste. But isn't it weird to see Knocked Up and Juno on the same list? And right next to each other like that? I guess unplanned pregnancy is the new black. And here are the top TV shows, also unranked:
Ally Walker in Tell Me You Love Me: At least they honored Ugly Betty, and I'm impressed that Everybody Hates Chris got noticed (finally). But Tell Me You Love Me is on my 10 worst of the year. And how have I completely missed out on Longford? I don't think I had even heard of it before the Golden Globe nominations. I'm also clueless about Dexter, unfortunately. Netflix, here I come! The selected films and programs will be honored at a luncheon in January. No nominating, no voting, no TV special. I guess the AFI favors edification over entertainment, and values critical thought over crowdsourcing. Crazy. Submitted by on December 17, 2007 - 4:34pm. |

Whoopee
Not that it could ever be overlooked
~I've been watching your world from afar, I've been trying to be where you are, I've been secretly falling apart...~
Huh?
Knocked Up? Top film? Really???
films
Wow that list of films shows what a truly poor year it has been! Not seen Juno - I hear it's good - but that is not an inspiring list.
Dexter is fab, probably my favourite show. Good to see Ugly Betty and Pushing Daisies in there too.
Dexter
DEXTER!!
I agree with scribegrrrl...
I agree with scribegrrrl, Tell Me You Love Me is not a good show. However, I love Dexter. It had a great finale last night.
I need to see Juno and agree that No Country for Old Men and Ratatouille
are excellent movies.
I also agree with cogent53, it hasn't been the best year for film or tv. Too bad really...
Dexter
Dexter..
What!
No "Life" and no "Saving Grace" and no "Damages"???
In my opinion this tv list sucks! :)
"call me old fashioned but I prefer feminism that leaves a little something to the imagination!"
Dexter
Amazing writing.
Michael C. Hall from "Six Feet Under" - just perfection.
Dexter = awesome!
Glad that so many people are in the know about DEXTER as well. Amazing writing and acting all around. Michael C. Hall is excellent and makes his character soo much more interesting to watch, definitely deserving of the recent Golden Globe nomination.
Hope the word spreads and more people have the opportunity to enjoy this show. (There's always netflix or blockbuster online if you don't get Showtime)
PUSHING DAISIES is also one of my fave shows this year too. Good recognition in the TV category at least.... and UGLY BETTY never fails to disappoint with some of the most hilarious one-liners :)
Dexter . . .superb
writing, acting, directing. What a season finale! Allowing that nut job, Lila, to settle into her new Paris digs—long enough for her to relax enough to start receiving mail—and then, well, you know . . . ah, classic, just like its opening montage. And Pushing Daisies, with Bryan Fuller (Wonderfalls, Dead Like Me)? Well, “The facts [are] these . . .,” there are still some television programs worth watching.
Who knew writers still thought about story lines for people with attention spans that allowed them to bypass cloying drama-vision, or skin-baring (and mind-emptying) “reality” programming?
huh?
