Academy to Whoopi: Sorry we, like, totally forgot about you

I'll admit that I didn't pay close attention to the Oscars telecast this year. I just wasn't that excited about the nominees, and there wasn't even much star-gazing to do — where was Jodie Foster, anyway?

So I didn't even see the montage of the hosts of Oscars past. And that means I didn't notice that Whoopi Goldberg was completely left out of said montage.

Whoopi wasn't the only one who slipped Oscar's mind — Steve Martin was also left out of the host montage, and Brad Renfro and Roy Scheider were not included in the "In Memoriam" segment.

There was some footage (in a different montage) of Whoopi's 1990 win for Best Supporting Actress for Ghost. But there wasn't a second of praise for her four hosting gigs (yes, four! 1993, 1995, 1998, 2001). The slight did not please the ladies of The View. Whoopi even got a little teary-eyed — here's the clip:

The Academy has apologized. According to producer Gil Cates, the omission was a "complete oversight":

No harm was intended, and I feel very, very badly that she was left out. I'm going to call her and tell her that.

Cates also said the montage wasn't really a "montage of hosts" but a montage of exciting moments. Oh. Gee, that helps: It's not about you being a host, Whoopi; it's about you being not exciting.

I don't know. It's hard not to see it as deliberate. Whoopi's performances as host were widely criticized by some, so this just seems like a kind of revenge. (I myself quite enjoyed her as host — I remember that after the performance of the Pocahontas song "Colors of the Wind," she mused, "What color is my wind?" and I was chuckling for days.)

And then there's this: Producer Cates noted that he was the one of the honchos who asked Whoopi to host the show in the first place. Is that sort of like saying, "Some of my best friends are black Oscar hosts?" I'm sure it's not fair of me to say that, but it just seems like he's protesting a little too much.

If it wasn't deliberate, it sure was sloppy. Hire some new researchers, ABC!

I was glad to see an apology...

but I noticed that it was all passive. "No harm was intended..." "...she was left out." How about someone apologizing for what he (or whomever was responsible) actually did, instead of just expressing regret for "what happened."

The other Oscar moment I'd still like to see explained is why Best Actress was buried in middle while Best Actor was grouped with Best Director and Best Picture at the end.

    didn't notice it either!

now I feel bad... I love Whoopi, and the Oscars when she hosted it... but I didn't notice she was missing from the montage until now!

I don't think it was on purpose, maybe they were just careless and rushed through getting all those montages done. (some useless, like that binoculars one!) I think I want to believe that's what happened!

    Whoopi's ego

Let's not even have Oscars.  Let's just have the Whoopi adulation show.  She was in the supporting actress clip.  She does not need to be in every clip.  Her whining disgusts me.  Another bit of ego carressing for poor little Whoopi.  Of course, I may still be miffed at her for making Elizabeth Hasselback look smarter (and one thing I don't need to see is someone making the Elizabeth Hasselback look smarter).*

Roy Scheider died in February of 2008 which means the two time Oscar nominee will be in next year's memoriam (since the Memoriam clip goes from February of the previous year to January 31st of the year of the presentation).  Pretty much has always been this way.  As for Brad Renfro, that is hardly a career that is worthy of consideration.  Could they have done with less agents.  I don't know, it kind of matters on their importance.  Renfro was a minor, minor actor whose career is hardly indicative of being selected.  It's intriguing that film buffs are ticked that the great director Edward Yang was left off (now that's really wrong) while E is worried about Brad Renfro.  Tragic yes.  Lasting impact in much of any way - not really.

*A few weeks ago Hasselback said black men got the right to vote in Presidential elections before women did.  Whoopi, so sure of herself because she's Whoopi, corrected Hasselback.  Only problem is that black men got the right to vote a half century earlier than women.  Needless to say I have to put up with conservative relatives sending me that clip.  Geez.

    Of course, as Whoopi stated,

Of course, as Whoopi stated, she was referring to the fact that many states still made it lllegal for Black men to vote, and the US government did nothing about it.

    Whoopi wasn't whining.

I incidently watched the episode of The View, which I don't think you did, because you would've noticed that it was the other co-stars of the show that was "whining" that Whoopi was slighted. They brought it up, she didn't. Plus, it's really hard to look at that incident and not be suspicious. She hosted it FOUR times. It's hard to digest she was accidently overlooked-unless it really was just a shoddy job.

    Sorry but no

Peachblossom720, no she wasn't.  The discussion was specifically about who the US goverment gave the right to vote first to.  A constitutional amendment is not overridden by state law.  The 15th amendment, which gave black men the right to vote, was ratified by the US in 1870.  Certain states refused to ratify it at the time but majority rules and the 15th amendment overrode the states that withheld.   The 19th amendment, giving women the right to vote, was ratified by the country in 1920.  The discussion was never about the disgusting acts designed by those in Southern states to keep blacks from voting (intimidation, fraud, violence, etc.).  The discussion was about Obama and Clinton and which would be more groundbreaking.  Hasselback offered up that black men were given the right to vote earlier and pondered if that enters into the discussion.  Whoopi then attempted to incorrectly correct her saying that the US gave women the right to vote long before they gave it to black men.  Whoopi's certainty would have been cool if she wasn't completely wrong.  The footage of the discussion is available.  Whatever Whoopi's comments later to cover her lack of knowledge of American history are another matter.  All she succeeded in doing was making Hasselback look smarter (and I don't care for it when a person makes Hasselback look smarter).

    It's HasselbEck, not HasselbAck

    Elisabeth Hasselbeck. Not Elizabeth Hasselback.

Spelling also makes people look smarter/dumber.

See how easy it is to make a mistake? Maybe Whoopi just made a mistake. The Academy certainly did.

    Whoopi did clarify what she

Whoopi did clarify what she meant the next day.  And since she, like a lot of other people, are tired of the recent efforts by some to re-write history, I believe her.

    My Lover Cindy,  Are

    My Lover Cindy,

Are you actually comparing misspelling a c grade celebrity's last name to not having a fundamental knowledge of American history.  Really.  Come on now.

So I take it that if I spell Adrian Zmed's last name incorrectly that would be the equivalent of not knowing Abraham Lincoln was the President during The Civil War.  I guess so by your reckoning.

The real problem with Whoopi not knowing her history is that she decided to correct someone who in this case did.

    I don't mean to be

I don't mean to be snarky, but that little analogy of yours was unnecessary and offensive. We all deal with enough judgmental b.s. in our real-lives....the last thing we need is to have it rearing its head in what is supposed to be a safe space.
