Screen Actors Guild Awards: Cutest hat rack ever

I didn't watch all of the 14th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards broadcast last night. Actually, I forgot it was on. I guess I find it difficult to get excited about movies like There Will Be Blood and No Country for Old Men — which, as Jamie recently pointed out, might as well be called No Movie for Women at All.

But I think I caught the best moments anyway. First, Tina Fey won for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Comedy Series.

She was self-effacing and adorable as usual. Here's her acceptance speech, in which she calls herself the "hat rack" to Alec Baldwin's Fred Astaire:

Ruby Dee won for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Supporting Role (American Gangster). Simply dee-lightful. And a bit of a surprise, I think, though fully deserved.

The Office won for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Comedy Series.

And what a crazy category that was! Ugly Betty, 30 Rock and The Office — how could anyone choose?

Finally, Julie Christie, who won for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Leading Role for Away From Her, is stunning and graceful and perfect. The End.

Here's her acceptance speech:

The funniest moment (of what I saw of the show) had to be Mickey Rooney referring to Queen Latifah as "Miss Latifah." She won for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Television Movie or Miniseries for Life Support, but wasn't there to accept. No matter how many times Mickey called her "Miss."

    Yea!

Go Tina Fey! I think her acceptance speech was the funniest of the night and congrats to SAG for their 75th anniversary!

    Oops?

    I kind of misread the title of this article at first (AHEM!) but still definitely agree. ^^;;;

    heh

I almost put parentheses around "hat" in the title, so I'm glad your dirty mind added those anyway. ;)

    Too Predictable

The only "bad" thing about the SAG awards was the predictability of the winners... except for Ruby Dee, all of the other winners were really the front runners, in particular in the movie categories.

I did love seeing Tina Fey win for 30 Rock.  I also thought Julie Christie winning (although expected) was wonderful.  I think that Daniel Day-Lewis was great in his passion at trying to express his sorrow regarding the loss of Heath Ledger... he appeared quite genuine.

I just watched Away From Her last night, and was completely blown away by the quiet beauty of the film.  It was poignant and gut-wrenching to watch not only the wonderful performance given by Julie Christie, but the equally fantastic work done by Gordon Pinsent as the husband who has to deal with the "loss" of his wife.  I think that Gordon has been sorely overlooked during the awards season.

Julie Christie is as beautiful a woman now as she was when she first graced the movie screens... it's funny because every time I see or hear Julie Christie's name I flash back to the song "Julie Christie" from the movie Better Than Chocolate.

I am happy that we will get new blood (hopefully) in the form of the nominees next year, now that The Sopranos has ended its run.  While I like the show, I always find it boring to watch year after year as the awards shows continue to honor certain shows and fail to choose other shows or actors to honor.  It's always fun to see a fresh nominee or surprise winner named and see their excitement at being honored as nominee or winner...
