Oscar nominations: "Juno," Blanchett and more

The nominees for the 80th Annual Academy Awards were announced this morning. The big question, though, is whether the Oscars broadcast will happen at all. It's slated for Feb. 24, which is, like, 5 minutes from now in writers' strike years. And the stakes are very high. As Lynette Rice of Entertainment Weekly puts it, "If putting the kibosh on the Globes put the hurt on NBC and made the world pay attention to the strike, imagine what stopping the 80th Annual Academy Awards would do?"

I hope they find a way for the show to go on. Meanwhile, here are the Best Picture nominees:

Atonement
Juno
Michael Clayton
No Country for Old Men
There Will Be Blood

That's right, Juno! Woo hoo! I still haven't seen Atonement. I liked Michael Clayton well enough, but not more than Juno. And I won't be seeing those last two very male-oriented films. So, yay, Juno!

Several other AfterEllen.com favorites nabbed some nods. Here are the actress categories:

BEST ACTRESS:
Cate Blanchett in Elizabeth: The Golden Age
Julie Christie in Away From Her
Marion Cotillard in La Vie en Rose
Laura Linney in The Savages
Ellen Page in Juno

BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS:
Cate Blanchett in I'm Not There
Ruby Dee in American Gangster
Saoirse Ronan in Atonement
Amy Ryan in Gone Baby Gone
Tilda Swinton in Michael Clayton

That's two, two chances for Cate Blanchett, one in drag and one as a queen. And nobody deserves it more. But, hey, Ellen Page! I wonder how it feels to be nominated at age 20 alongside a great like Julie Christie?

I almost don't care who wins those categories because all the nominees are so great — and even many of the roles are great for a change. (Except I'm not that fond of La Vie en Rose. There, I've said it. Yes, I'm a monster.)

I'm especially glad for Tilda Swinton, because her performance in Michael Clayton is fearless in all the best ways.

The Original Screenplay category boasts three female nominees this year:

Diablo Cody, Juno
Nancy Oliver, Lars and the Real Girl
Tony Gilroy, Michael Clayton
Brad Bird, Ratatouille
Tamara Jenkins, The Savages

Nancy Oliver, Tamara Jenkins

(Nancy Oliver trips my gaydar, BTW ... anybody know more about her?)

And in the Adapted Screenplay category, Sarah Polley was nominated for Away From Her. Yes.

Other highlights: Persepolis was nominated for Best Animated Feature Film. Across the Universe got a nod for Costume Design. And Freeheld, about a police officer's fight to leave her pension to her female partner, was nominated for Best Documentary Short Subject. (Check back tomorrow for an article about Freeheld.)

Read the full list of nominations here. And tune in for, er, something on Feb. 24; possibly just another lame-o press conference.

I haven't seen any of these movies!

I feel so far away! I haven't seen any of the nominated movies. I think there is a list of films so long to rent, I will be watching a whole year of diferent movies everyday! On the other hand, I really hope that the writers get what they want, because without them the industry sucks! and the Oscars as a press conference will suck even more! I like the party with my friends, we all watching the Oscars and having a feast of food and gossip!

    Oscars

I woke up early this morning to watch the Oscar nominations live, only to be shocked to find that Angelina Jolie's name was missing from the Best Actress list.  I have been listening to many other people in the entertainment industry note the same thing... they chalk it up to the film A Mighty Heart having been released in June, when releasing it during a more appropriate time (read: later in the year) would have been better at keeping Angie's performance on the minds of the voters.

Other than that, I'm fairly pleased with the nominees, in particular Ellen Page for Juno and Marion Cotillard for La Vie en Rose.  I will be watching Away From Her in the next few days, so I'll finally see the much touted performance of Julie Christie, the presumed front-runner to win for Best Actress.

I was surprised to see Michael Clayton receive so many nominations... frankly I found the film kind of boring... perhaps I'll have to watch it again.

I think that the front-runner for Best Actor is Daniel Day-Lewis for There Will Be Blood, Javier Bardem (Best Supporting Actor) for No Country For Old Men and Cate Blanchett (Best Supporting Actress) for I'm Not There. I am still on the fence a bit as to Best Director and Best Film, although I see the current front runner for film as No Country For Old Men based on all the awards it has won thus far.

I think that Diablo Cody should take Best Original Screenplay for Juno and Best Adapted Screenplay possibly going to Sarah Polley for Away From Her.  Of course the Oscars tend to usually have some surprises up their sleeves, not to mention that with the writers strike still going strong, who knows if there will even be an Oscar show to watch, so we'll have to wait and see what happens.

    They're all winners! *

Here are my picks for who'll take home the little naked guy:
Best Picture: No Country For Old Men
Best Actress: Laura Linney (yes, I know I'm going out on a limb, but cabin fever can do that to you)
Best Original Screenplay: Diablo Cody - duh...'Juno' would not be the shimmering gem that it is without those perfectly arranged words.
Best Supporting Actress: Cate Blanchett, just so Billy Bush's head can explode once and for all.
Best Adapted Screenplay: No Country For Old Men. What can I say? I like the Coen Bros.
I don't care about the other categories, which means in my frozen universe they don't exist.

    Scribegrrrl, I agree..

I wonder how it feels to be nominated at age 20 alongside a great like Julie Christie?

That same question I asked myself when I saw the Oscars 1994 when Anna Paquin won Best Actress in a Supporting Role at age of 11 for The Piano, with Emma Thompson as a fellow nominee in, making her the second youngest actress to win an Oscar after Tatum O'Neal who won in the same category in 1973 for Paper Moon at age of 10. I think its amazing that there have been actresses so young to be nominated and even won Oscars, something I haven't seen nor heard with young male actors of the same ages?

    exciting and disappointing

I'm thrilled that Laura Linney got recognized for The Savages. I didn't see it coming, but it is awesome news. It almost makes up for Cate Blanchett's Elizabeth: The Golden Age nomination. That has got to be the worst reviewed film to ever garner a best actress nod. Plus, she's already nominated for supporting actress! Ridiculous. Angelina Jolie gave an excellent performance in A Might Heart that she was snubbed.

Yay for Juno getting a nomination for best picture, although I'm still routing for No Country (my fave of the year). I would have LOVED to see Jennifer Garner get a supporting actress nomination, but what are you going to do?

Glad to see "Falling Slowly" nominated for best song, even though Once didn't get any other recognition :(.

Man if Cate or Marion win best actress I'll scream.

    Go Juno!

I think Diablo Cody'll definitely get her Oscar, but I think Juno should be the dark horse winner for Best Picture and that Ellen Page should get Best Actress, too. If it actually happens that way, I'd be thrilled!

Also, I think Cate will get Best Supporting Actress, but Best Actress will go to someone else.

    My reaction...

Its an amazingly good year for women: there are 3 women in the Best Original Screenplay category. So glad our stories are beginning to be recognised. I'm rooting for Diablo Cody, but maybe it's not such a good thing to get an Oscar for your first screenplay! The pressures and expectations will go through the stratosphere, and I wouldn't wish it on her :)

Sarah Polley (bravo!) for Best Adapted Screenplay. So deserve it, but unlikely to win.

And interesting women in the Best Actress category. So glad Laura Linney get a nod, and of course our Ellen Page (sorry, I'm Canadian), and Julie Christie (who's just a gem). I do think Julie Christie should win. She's just luminous. And incidentally: Ellen Page commented that she was "humbled to be nominated with women that she admired and respected so much."

I have to say that Cate Blanchett shouldn't be in the Best Actress category for Golden Age. I saw the movie, and I'm afraid she rather overacted. I think Angelina Jolie should have got it for her turn in The Mighty Heart. It was an exquisitely nuanced performance. Its the first time since her role in Girl, Interupted that I felt she demonstrated her acting chops.

And Tilda Swinton was strangely creepy and riveting in Michael Clayton, although I agree with imthey that Michael Clayton wasn't anything to write home about. Predictably formulaic.

OT BUT AS HE IS A FORMER OSCAR NOMINEE/HEATH LEDGER DEAD AT 28!

NEW YORK -- A New York Police Department spokesman says the actor Heath Ledger has been found dead at a downtown Manhattan residence.

Ledger starred in "Brokeback Mountain" and "The Brothers Grimm."

Ledger was found by his housekeeper in his Broome Street apartment with pills strewn all around him, according to police.

She entered his bedroom after she knocked and he didn't respond, police said. When she found him unresponsive, she tried to revive him and then contacted emergency personnel.

WNBC.com will provide more details as soon as they become available.

    Huh

I'm excited for Marion Cotillard and Julie Christie, but pretty indifferent to most of the rest of stuff.  Johnny Depp was a little baffling.  I mean,  Sweeny Todd was good, but that was no Oscar-worthy performance.  And I would have like Angelina to have been nominated for A Mighty Heart.

Oh, and it's too bad about Heath Ledger, he was a talented guy.

    Vanya's picture

I am pretty sure that Cate

I am pretty sure that Cate Blanchet will get it for "I'm not there" as will Javier Bardem. The rest is pretty tricky. I was surprised that Angelina and Jodie weren't nominated though...

And, I am sorry about Heath Ledger, I always liked that boy ever since I saw "10 things I hate about you".

    I think best picture will

I think best picture will be "There will be blood". But I'm hoping for Atonement. How can I not love Keira, geez.

I think Cate will get it for "I'm not there".

    Juno sneaking under the wire

I'm half hoping that 'There Will Be Blood' and 'No Country For Old Men' will bleed off an equal number of voters and that 'Juno' will sneak in and steal the prize. I haven't seen 'Atonement' yet, so I can't weigh in on it. It's probably just me, but it looks boring and tedious. You know, like it takes itself too seriously.

    Rudy Dee!

I'm really surprised Angelina Jolie (A Mighty Heart), Emile Hirsch (Into the Wild) and, to a lesser extent, Denzel Washington (American Gangster) didn't get Oscar nods. All three offered tremendous performances.

I haven't seen enough of these movies to comment on who should win or not, but I'm going to be real, real upset if Ruby Dee gets an Oscar for American Gangster and all I get to see is a press conference...
