The 50th annual Grammy Awards: a Winehouse-Feist smackdown

The nominations for the 50th annual Grammy Awards were announced yesterday. As you've probably heard, the leaders of the pack are Kanye West (eight nominations) and Amy Winehouse (six nominations). Rihanna was nominated for four awards, as was Feist.

But I don't care about the numbers. I'm focusing on Best New Artist and Best Female Pop Vocal Performance. Both of those categories pit two of my favorites of 2007 (and probably of a lifetime) against each other: Winehouse and Feist.

I really don't know who to root for. In fact, I have never felt more conflicted in my life (well, I guess I should say I have never felt more conflicted about something that ultimately means so little to me).

Where do my loyalties lie? With the drug-addled soulful Brit whose talent is more breathtaking than any breakdown and even bigger than her hair?

Or with the earthy Canadian chanteuse who uses her voice like an instrument and can lend her pipes to Apple without seeming like a sellout?

I can't even say, "Oh, I'll go with the less crazy one." I mean, yes, Amy Winehouse wanders the streets of London at 5:00 a.m. in her bra, crying and probably high. That's pretty crazy (and makes me very scared for her).

But then there's Feist, who says things like, "I grew up feeling harmony physically and understanding how to become a puzzle piece in a human Tetris" (Rolling Stone, Dec. 13, 2007).

So they're both sorta loony, if you ask me. And that's par for the rock-star course, so who cares?

Nope, I'll have to find another deciding factor. The aforementioned hair?

Yeah, Winehouse wins there.

But when it comes to sex appeal, Feist is far and away the victor — and not just because she doesn't have the body of a dessicated mannequin (sorry, Amy, but please: Eat something! And, you know, check in somewhere for cleansing and hydration).

No, it's the lilt of Feist's voice and the filigree of her phrasing that really make me swoon. Take, for example, the "oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh" on "I Feel It All." It does something to me.

I don't think I can decide. I just hope they'll both perform — Winehouse is definitely the iffy one there. (Forget performing; will she even show up?)

The other nominees I like in the Best New Artist category are Ledisi and Paramore. They definitely deserve the recognition. I guess I'll just be happy no matter who wins this one — as long as it's not Taylor Swift. Go ahead, throw tomatoes; I'm just not a big fan of country music. But I do think Taylor's response to the nomination news was cute: "This is the best day ever. I'm freaking out."

Yeah, it must be nice to get a Grammy nod before you're even 18! I'd freak out too.

Meanwhile, the Best Traditional Pop Vocal Album category could be subtitled Four Virtuosos and a Wannabe. The nominees there are Bette Midler for Cool Yule, Queen Latifah for Trav'lin' Light, James Taylor for James Taylor at Christmas, Barbra Streisand for Live in Concert 2006 (yay, I was there!) and Michael Bublé for Call Me Irresponsible. I'll call you out of place, Mr. Emily Blunt. Guess who I want to win this one?

The Best Female R&B Vocal Performance category is stunning: Mary J. Blige for "Just Fine," Fantasia for "When I See You," Alicia Keys for "No One," Chrisette Michelle for "If I Have My Way" and Jill Scott for "Hate On Me." Go 'head and hate on me, hater, now or later!

Other nominations worth noting are Lily Allen's misspelled Alright, Still and Björk's mystifying Volta for Best Alternative Music Album; Chaka Khan's Funk This for Best R&B Album; Corinne Bailey Rae's "Like a Star" for Song of the Year; and Joni Mitchell's "One Week Last Summer" for Best Pop Instrumental Performance — yes, instrumental. She can do it all. (I have to admit, though, that parts of that track sound like '80s synth overkill to me.)

And speaking of Joni and '80s synth overkill, Herbie Hancock got a nomination for Album of the Year for River: The Joni Letters (his tribute to Joni Mitchell). Herbie Hancock? What year is it again? I still think of him as the "Rock It" guy:

The Grammy Awards broadcast is Feb. 10 on CBS.

    Grudgingly, Amy

Now, It irks me that the money I used for the first album I've BOUGHT in a year goes to an artist that's probably using that money for her next high. Despite that, I remember I how amazed I was when I first heard Valerie. How funny and witty I thought she was when I heard Addicted and Fuck Me Pumps. How she was able to accurately portray a "Friends with Benefits" relationship in "Tears Dry On There Own" without sounding pitiful or maudlin or saccharine. How beautiful I thought "Love Is A Losing A Game" and "He Can Only Hold Her" were when I first heard them. For that feeling alone, I think she deserves it.

I've actually seen Feist perform a few years ago at a Rilo Kiley concert, let's just say it wasn't her best night. While I think her current album is great, I think it's Amy all the way.

    FEIST no question

i think amy is very talented...but all i have to say is this:

listen to "mushaboom" a few times...i DARE you not to think leslie feist is god.

    no contest for me

Feist. I liked them both in the beginning, but Feist has grown more as an artist. I feel that Feist will actually realize her potential, whereas Amy is a star that burns a bit to brightly. She's burning out too fast. She needs help, not fame.

    Feist, by a hair ...

And the reason I'm going with this is because I think she has the best complete *album* ... with quite a variety of songs and styles and things I've never heard before.

I LOVE Amy Weinhouse. But I think Feist could take both by her varience alone.

    Absolutely Feist

I love them both, but I have loved Feist longer and harder. (And you can feel free to think dirty thoughts after that statement.) Feist is just phenomenal and is absolutely amazing live.

I really like Amy Winehouse now, but I listened to Frank a few years back and was not intrigued at all. The whole 60's sound serves her much better than songs about shoes.

Feist is the real-deal and I am so excited she is finally getting some recognition!

    Feist

I am hoping for her to win that.

Haven't cared much for the Beehive when she started spitting at fans. She still has a damn good voice, that's the only thing she has going right now.

I seriously hope she will get some help with everything that she needs because it's a shame that her talent is going to waste; she still has the voice.

    amy winehouse

iv got a mate who was workin backstage at her gig in birmingham, where her fans walked out cos she was to drunk to perform properlyy, the other week, who saw her doin lines of coke in front of everyone.

so i guess anyone who thinks we dont actually know if she does drugs (like my media teacher) is wrong =)

but i still think shes a great artist, shes just gotten off track and it is such a shame :(

    deathbyblonde's picture

    Feist, definitley

I just don't really get the whole Amy Winehouse thing.  I mean, her voice is good, but she just doesn't do it for me.  I think Feist has more to her.

    MandaLeah's picture

    Feist

I never understood Winehouses appeal and the fact of the matter is The Reminder is the only album I own that was put up for a Grammy. But I've been a fan of Feist since Monarch. As much as I deteste the Grammy's for their uninspired choice in music I'll chear for Feist

    Feist

I have to go with Feist. Gotta represent Atlantic Canada. My Moon, My Man is one of the best songs on her new CD.

My second choice would be Paramore.

    FEIST

    Definitely!

    FEIST...

Loved both amy and feist albums this year.  Feist live was one of the best concerts of the year.  She rocks it out.  I love that about my favorite artists.

Amy if I saw her live and she was all doped up.  I'd be so pissed.

    feist.  rules.

    boywithmoonandstars's picture

    Sorry it's Amy.

Feist sounds like at least a dozen other bands/ artists in the last decade. Yes she has a great voice, but so does Beth Orton and how many others. Amy sounds like no one else around lately and that's that. Yes she's a mess, but ya know what , life's rough get a f**ckin helmet. And those who down her for doing drugs...take 80% of your favorite cd's out of your collection if it really bothers you that much.
    Radical Bradacal's picture

    Beth Orton?

I think comparing Feist to Beth Orton is like comparing The Beatles to Led Zeppelin. Doesn't work so well.... especially if you look at the different instrumentation and the arrangements of her songs. If you look at it from that point of view, you may may see it differently.

However, I do agree that the amount of drugs that Amy Weinhouse does or does not do has no standing on the caliber or prowess of her music.

Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix and Mama Cass created or helped create some of the most revolutionary sounds of the last century ... but those over-doses are no lie. Doesn't change the fact that they were each incendiary in their own ways.

And what’s he then that says I play the villain,

    Orton.

Not completely alike, it's true, but the first few times I heard that apple commercial I really thought it was Beth. So far as the drugs go, as someone who's been in recovery for going on six years I know the bottom is out there waiting for Amy. All addicts hit it, and with successful artists the money and enablers all around her will serve to hold her up far longer than most can sustain. It makes the end game even worse. I know that if I had been faced with unlimited resources and the whole world competing to hook me up with sh*t and be my friend I would be dead. The other thing is that no one can make you quit. Even a room full of relatives weeping and trying to have some Dr. Phil moment with you won't cut it. You might agree to go, but it's just to get out of that emotional situation and avoid the pain a little longer. Amy will get herself together when she really wants it for herself. I hope that is before she does permanant or terminal damage to herself. Whew, that was a lot longer than I intended.

    Ms. Winehouse

Amy needs a life coach or a life jacket.  Her talent is phenominal and I hope she seeks out help before she ends up like the other phenominal talent, Whitney Houston, who in my opinion wandered around in years of mediocrity with Bobby Brown.  Say yes, yes, yes to Rehab, Amy!

    pinkerton80's picture

    Feist!

Feist for sure. I am impressed by Amy Winehouse's tremendous talent, but I am so very tired of hearing about her constant ridiculous antics. She needs to get a handle on herself.

I <3 Feist and pretty much everything that has come out of the Broken Social Scene collective (Stars, Metric, Kevin Drew, Apostle of Hustle, Valley of the Giants, Jason Collett, etc) so much that I think I have a problem. Do you think there's a 12-step group for gorgeous Canadian indie rock?

    JDrummer's picture

    12-step program...nah

You only need to find a 12-step program if it's causing problems for you.  And I don't see how Stars, BSS, Jason Collett, etc. can ever ever ever cause you a problem.  Love Canadian indie rock...beautiful stuff.
    sexyolderwomen's picture

    Feist over Winehouse

Definitely Feist over Amy Winehouse. I like the style of Rehab but the words suck as does her whole act which in my opinion is quite trashy.
    audurem's picture

    Oooh, Feist

She is absolutely stunning. And while I think Amy has potential, I'd rather not see a "best artist" award given to someone whose life is a complete mess. Sort it out, make another record, win best record of the year and that's just fine by me. But currently, I have little respect for her - even though she has a killer voice and some pretty amazing songs.

Feist's music makes me ache, though. In a good-bad way, and sometimes I can't stand it but mostly I think she is beautiful and amazingly talented. Her album is solid, and the lyrics are wonderful... and I have very much respect for anyone who can write good lyrics.

As for Taylor Swift - she's cute, her album is a sort-of decent country album, she can play a guitar... but there are a bazillion similar (or better) artists out there, and I grew tired of her album very quickly. She does have a lot of potential, but I don't think she holds a candle to the other nominees for best new artist.

Amy is gonna win when it

Amy is gonna win when it comes to her against Feist, she sold more and she's the most popular, so that's that. I hope Lily Allen gets some type of recognition though, I love her. Also, Alicia will win something as well.
    neostars's picture

    Feist who?

is it very wrong that I don't know who Feist is?
    never heard of her...

after watching that Feist On SNL video, I must say I'm not that impressed... I think Amy Winehouse is better, so my pick is Amy!

    Amy Winehouse, ftw!

Anyone curious as to how they're going to have an Awards show without any writers? Does this mean back-to-back performances?

I always feel real weird to hear the nominees for the Best New Artist category--most of whom have been putting out music for years independently before they're recognized by the NARAS. I'll give the edge to Amy Winehouse for the BNA award. I think Black to Black achieved a level of mainstream success that The Reminder hasn't to date (I think Amy's sold three times as many records in the States). Besides, the fact that she's crazy before she receives the honor, as opposed to after like Lauryn Hill, just proves how ahead of the curve she is ;)

The Best Female R&B Vocal Performance category is like the cast list for a dream I once had. Heart be still.

    feist

Give the award to Feist.  Winehouse has a messed up life and refuses to clean it up, and it really looks like she doesn't give a shit about her music, her image or her fans.  Better to see some recognition given to a serious, hardworking artist that actually shows up to gigs sober/clean and ready to give the people what they paid for.
    angel winters's picture

    my picks

Kanye West,  Rihanna, and Feist they are the three that need backing...first off kanye west...hates bush and thinks that rappers should knock it off when it comes to lgbt community..his one of the very few who is on our side why begrudge him...plus his music is more then just a little good.

    Rihanna...lets see pop loves...who doesn't love them

Feist I think she is one of the very few that you can say that can not only sing but write her music and lets face it at this point where shitty music is rapid and pumped out of the music industry weather or not you can understand the singer...I say ...give her an award.
