What's YOUR Problem? Episode 14

Actress Cathy DeBuono and guest Jill Bennett respond to letters and chat with a group of AE readers from Europe.

As Jill references in the vlog, we've had a small but growing number of folks join the site in the last several months who don't seem to know the difference between criticizing the content of vlogs, articles, or comments (which is fine), and making personal attacks (which is not fine). We've had a fairly hands-off approach to this in the past, but we're going to be less tolerant of personal attacks on vloggers, writers, or AfterEllen.com members moving forward.

This isn't a widespread problem — most of you understand the difference just fine — and it's certainly not unique to AfterEllen.com. Most sites go through these kinds of growing pains as they get bigger, we just want to nip it in the bud. Thanks to all of you for being supportive of the site, and helping us figure this out together.

    YAY Cathy and Jill! I

    YAY Cathy and Jill!

I live in Spain and all the gay people live in Madrid or Barcelona which is ages away from me on the coast so I have to say that I too love my computer and the gay community that I feel I belong to because of AE. It's crazy that people bash you guys, I think you're all amazing and I've said it before but the AE crew are making the world a better place. OK that sounds sooo cheesy but it's true, the site is so influencial in my life and it clearly is in other peoples' too. That's enough sentimentality for now, just wanted to spread the love...<3

    well....

first off: eww JB and CD ;). jk-- u guys have hotness written all over u so pff ur right screw what those narsty haters think. second: for the religion ?? there was a forum up not too long ago about thoughts on someone choosing religion or their gf.

"Brains grow love."--H. H. the Dalai Lama

Actually, there's a whole category in the forums on religion.  There are fifty-six threads covering a range of issues, and as always, if you don't read anything that fits your situation, you are welcome to add a thread.  Before you go looking, though,  I added a thread for each of the religions that I could think of when I started the religion category, so you could start with the relevant threads there first.  Some of the most lively, intelligent, thoughtful, and compassionate debates and comments I have read on AE can be found in the religion category.

Another resource that can be found here on AE is a weekly podcast (it actually is a podcast, not a vlog) entitled Oh God I'm Gay.  Each week host Alicia Ross interviewed a prominent member of the religious community about issues affecting LGBT believers.  Most of the podcasts dealt with Christians, but other religions were covered as well.

    Awesome

Totally loved this weeks vlog! But then again i love every weeks blog lol. Screw all the haters out there! they are just being childish, everyone at AfterEllen works really hard to help our community and the haters just throw it back in their faces, it's just pointless in my opionion, so i totally agree with deleting their posts.

Great Vlog! looking forward to the next one! :-)

    Good idea

i'm so glad you guys are taking down stupid comments... we have enough with people being horrible to each other in the real world everyday, I don't understand why anyone would enjoy being horrible on the internet, or on this site where we come to relax and have fun... Cathy, you should analyze that kind of stupid behavior... what's in it for these people?

    GREAT VLOG!!!!!!

Just wanted to say that I appreciate the topics you covered today. (gee that rhymes)

Anyhoo...Cathy and Jill, your views on religion could not have been more true (in my view). I am glad that you have addressed this topic, as I have seen it become such a conflict for many religious lesbians. Perhaps a new forum should be started...

    Christians

Okayy about being gay and Christian. I was in that place once and it's really scary. I completely lost all respect for my church for my frirends and even for myself. I got really heavy into drugs and alcohold because I just didn't care. The God I had spent my whole life loving and devoting myself to despised me for who I was and it really messed me up. For 2 years I was in this downward spiral until a good friend of mine convinced me to go to our beach camp over the summer. I went thinking this wouldn't change me and they would shun me the whole time I was there. So I spent the first couple days of the trip by myself locked in our dorms skipping my classes and smoking marijuana off the back porch while everyone was at the beach. I even used my fake ID to buy a 6 pack and snuck it back to the room. Our last night at redevotional I sat in the back with a few close friends and my youth pastor. When she went up to speak her words were so sincere about God's love for me and the wonderful, strong person I am. (her words not mine) I broke down in tears and from then on out I've cleaned up my life and am a devoted Christian who is gay. So it's more or less that you have to really trust people and believe not just what the Bible says because like Jill said you can't pick and choose what rules to use, but also believe that your God loves you and he wants you to be happy and strong and live a wonderful life in his light.

I think this vlog is amazing and Jill and Cathy just made for the best Friday ever! I love you guys!

    Ohh

Cathy, you are a goddess. You + Jill = On screen chemistry that makes you want to watch this vlog over and over. I hope that isn't too creepy, haha.

All jokes aside, as a 19yr old born "Mormon," I just told my father that i don't believe in his religion. That I feel i have wasted my time trying to make them (my parents) feel better about themselves by shutting up and going along with the ride. I havnt broken the news that, my "best friend" is actually my girlfriend, but i know im paving the path for that in the future by sticking up for myself now. Your feelings on religion, that if there is a God, he wouldn't base his love on petty things like sexuality, race, gender, but how you act towards others.

I hope you both know how much we appreciate the talented, smart, and down to earth ladies of AfterEllen. *Being gorgeous doesn't hurt either :)

Great job by the lovely ladies from UJBFC!!!  You guys totally rock!

    I <3 Jill more and more.  :0)

I applaud Sarah for cleaning up the riff raff that blows (literally) into town whenever they feel there is an opportunity to take someone down with words.  Honestly, some people are screwed up and somehow feel better when they're insulting other people.  The vicious and hurtful comments I've read about Jill, Cathy and AE members by these fucktards sicken me to no end because they've gone out of their way to be cruel, not to mention they have stuck their noses into things that are NONE of their business.  All I can say is...what comes around goes around because kharma is quite the bitch.

    Another great vlog!!!

fucktard :) admins obv. feel free to take this down

that's quite the interesting word n so being bored i googled it.... here's imo an excellent def. haha i lol-ed.... so what aren't we all a little immature at times? :D

    Family: Fucktardae

A fucktard is a person who is usually ugly, short, balding (or you) and relatively stupid in most regards. They never seem to understand what the hell they are talking about, and frequently have issues with their asshole or some other orifice hurting. On occasion a fucktard will come to full fucktardness and attempt to push their stupidity on others, who will then quickly realize the person's true nature and quickly label him as a waste of sperm. Scientists count fucktards among the endangered species, aiming for extinction.

    playthemusic814's picture

    It's about time.

Not that I don't love the funny but, I love when my favorite funny ladies get serious.

And, I have a serious question in regards to something I've been noticing lately. Jill, do you just carry Mia Kirshner Jenny around everywhere you go? ;)

But, in true seriousness, I really liked what y'all said about religion. I pretty much feel the same way. I may not fall into any particular denomination but, I do believe that God is an entity of love. And, not this hateful, smite-happy incarnation that seems to be the more prevalent image in our society.

To heck with the trolls. There's too much hate and not enough love in this world.

    ~It means pride.~

    I Believe Starbuck's picture

Good call Sara Warn- haters..go away- you're boring.

love the vlog- you and Jill are so funny together- more more!

Just wanted to write in to relay a quick religion note- Episcopalians are LGBT friendly- they were the first secular branch to have gay priests and women priests- I think the head bishop is now a gay woman actually.  You need to check with each church separately just to be sure- but for the most part they are very supportive of the LGBT folks.   Good luck- you'll find a place that is right for you.  I agree with Cathy %100- God loves us all for who we are. Period.  Hate is a human failing, not a divine one.

    YAY!

This vlog really hit home for me especially since I am a christian and gay and I know how hard it is, you feel like you have to choose one or the other and can't be both...I recently came out to my mom and my closest friend and mom's in denial still and my friend told me to go to therapy and basically "degay" myself. I've decided that when that day comes for me to be judged we'll find out if I'm going to heaven or damned to hell.  Thank you Jill & Cathy for your wonderful insights.

You guys are too funny and have great comedic timing together!

    Cathy attempting to bite Jill...hilarious!

Jenny making out with Comet was classic crazy Jenny

    FearNoArt's picture

Well, it can't be that bad...

If all these freakin' wonderful people are going to hell, then it can't be that bad... Instead of worrying about other peoples' judgment of you, be sure to spend life spreading happiness and love to others. Whatever God who does not support that, is no God to me...

    Rock-Throwing Provocateurs

Happy to hear a little constraint will be applied to the ne'er-do-wells and miscreants who pop in and out of these pages merely to sow discord. While always appreciating a vigorous conversation involving constructive criticism of a vlog or blog (sorry Liz), it has become tiresome recently (seemingly post-Dinah) to encounter these trolls. As the AE members on the video say, one feels the need to tell them to shut their pie-hole but that is entirely the response that they are seeking...

To be honest, I actually haven't read any hateful blogs... but that's prolly cos the moment a blog starts to go negative, I start reading the next one. I don't want that hateful stuff to get inside me. So kudos and thank you to Sarah for the new rule.

Yes, I agree that peeps should have their say... but it needs to be said in a "this is my perspective" kind of way, not in an attacking hurtful way.

Thank you AE for giving me and loads of others a safe place to visit, and for introducing me to soooo many awesome wonderful hot intelligent insightful women and topics  :)

    great show

i just wanted to say how awesome and beautiful the two of you are, inside and out. it's so cool to get to see my 2 fav. vloggers together. i  totally think Sarah should give you 2 your own show.  as far as the haters go,screw  those people.what you ladies are doing for the community is so great and obviously felt world wide. i live in a large city and do have gay friends, but i don't get to see them as often as i would like. everyone where i work is straight, very straight. i am out and would never in a million years ever tolerate any anti-gay or hateful comments from any of them, so why should we here? it's just great to know that when i am in my office and need to get away from "their world" all i have to do is turn on my pc and there all of you are.-thanks Sarah

    Beliefs in life!

Guys, AMAZING vlog! Can't wait for the next installment!!!

As a Christian myself, I have found it hard in the past to balance my feelings for my religion with my feelings for my life and how I want to live it. Both myself and one of my brothers are gay, but that hasn't stopped either of us not only going to church, but also being heavily involved in Youth Groups too. Its not about God hating you for being gay, otherwise he wouldn't have created such wonderful women in the world as the AE vloggers who show you how you can totally be confident with who you are, no matter what religion or background you are from!! I just feel that people put too much emphisis on the negative side of some religion's view on gay relationships, as all God wants is for us to be happy with life!

To make comment on the vlog, I'm from Scotland too + I totally agree with Zoe, there aren't nearly enough lesbian-related places to go to as there should be, particularly those that haven't been taken over by gay guys+their straight girl friends! So AE is the most amazing place to go instead, that allows you to be completely yourself + not get judged for it!

AfterEllen.com has helped me (and I'm sure many, many others) accept who I am and truely feel comfortable + confident with it, so THANKYOU SARAH WARN!!!!!!!

This is for Zoe from Aberdeen - aka-talking guineapig

    Hello Zoe

Well there are more LGBT organisations in Scotland than you think and I can assure you they are not all frequented my 'gay men and their straight female friends', but as with any club/pub unless it is a womens night/ or womens only space the majority of people who attend will be Gay Men. Not just a problem in Scotland.

Look at www.scotsgay.co.uk for all listings in Scotland. There is a 'Pride' event taking place in Aberdeen- 5th of July, there are even social events in Inverness. There is a LGBT youth project/social for under 26 in Scotland and you can even get them to do more in your area, if you feel it is neccesary.

Well if you wish too find out more feel free to PM me. Or if you feel really brave you can give me a hand to do one of the many LGBT projects I am involved in.

Take care and goodluck and enjoy the rest of your holiday.

Personal attacks always piss me off. I'm glad AE has some great moderators (yay @ Harpy) that usually clean up the mess.

I don't agree with the advice for letter 1. If I had been in such intense contact with someone for that long, only to find out they had been lying about some crucial things about themselves, I would not just forgive them. In my experience, if someone lies about having a family, they probably lie about other stuff as well.

    - - - - - - - - - -

-Everyone is entitled to be stupid, but some abuse the privilege.

    Who doesn't blog these days?

    TheWeyrd1's picture

    I'm inbetween on letter 1

I was involved with a woman via internet and phone for almost 2 years. Very intense at times, but I suspected there were things she just wasn't completely honest about. I've also been friends with another nice gal for over a year that I met online. Purely platonic. I haven't had any reason to feel that she wasn't being honest. I think the issue is what was the real intention of each person. As that can color their self portrayals quite a bit.

If it's truly just a friends kind of relationship then honesty there "feels" different than the honesty that occurs when you feel intensely about someone enough to talk to them everyday and be vulnerable. In other words, my friend and I chat regularly, but it's mostly work related and kind of a mentoring relationship. We don't talk about feelings that often and for sure not about feelings we might have for each other, because they're really just friendly type feelings not worth discussing. With my more involved friend...it was more than friendly...it was intense enough to get testy when intentions were misunderstood. When you can feel intensely about someone, then it's probably something beyond a typical friendship. And in this case, if either gal felt that way, the lying pretty much discounts the foundation of their relationship and it may be time to move on because just like you can't go back to holding hands after sex, you can't go back to an easy platonic friendship after such intense feelings and then this level of betrayal. I will say though, I have a very long time best friend that I care about, but it's never been romantic on either of our parts. But there have been arguments and time outs, so it's not impossible to have intense feelings within a friendship, however it feels intense in a different more familial way than in a romantic way.

Fun vlog having both Jill and Cathy discussing serious topics and yet being funny and light too! So, does having more of the AE fan girls mean we get more Jill with Cathy?

Jill: My weave itches ~ Ha! That fact alone is why I'll never get one. After sitting through cornrolls and braids, I've realized that I love my scalp and I don't want to hurt it anymore.

By the way, Lucia is my hero.

Posting negative comments helps no one. Regardless of if you think the poster is a troll or not, feeding into their weird judgment or rant only adds fuel to the fire. It takes everything I have in me not to go off on all the AE haters. Especially the ones who seem to have a personal vendetta against Jill, but for me to post a response calling their comments ignorant would be irrelevant and pointless. Plain and Simple: Don't Feed The Trolls.

I am a proud fan of this site. I respect and support any changes Sarah needs do to help keep AE a peaceful and welcoming place.

Perhaps it's because I don't participate in the forums that I really haven't come across any of this bad-mouthing, but to be honest, I'm glad I haven't. Reading something like that would only make me sad. Then angry.

And "I am a proud fan of this site. I respect and support any changes Sarah needs do to help keep AE a peaceful and welcoming place." I couldn't have said it better myself. These people are damaging to others so I'm glad they're being dealt with swiftly.

    fab!

cathy and fabulous vlog!!!  jill, thanks so much for details about leviticus.

europeans on an AE vlog, wooooo! :o) even someone from my home town. zoe, hello fellow aberdonian! although i'm no longer there, i can completely sympathise with your situation. there was only one lgbt venue when i was going out at home as an undergrad and there were a lot more gay men (+ friends) than lesbians/bi women. when a second venue opened, the first mysteriously burnt down soon afterwards... have you been involved with the lgbt soc at aberdeen uni or rgu (or is there a joint one these days)? we had non-uni people of a similar age join us when i was involved. did you go to the gaylidh?!

good: the negative comments are being booted out. this website definitely doesn't need negative energy like that and the vloggers definitely don't need bashing. AE is about solidarity and providing a supportive community!

kills me. I actaully do laugh out loud. You're timing with Jill and those "im going to bite you" you moments. LOLOLOL. And Lucia, are you a fat furry thing?? I wouldn't have guessed that about you! Sarah I completely support your descion to not allow bashing on this web page. There is so much love here. And people who bash are only jealous anway. I can not think of any other reason to do so other than they feel so jealous they want to destroy who they are talking about.

Thanks Cathy for another great vlog. I missed you last week.
