Gay Girls Who Game: "WiiFit and Professor Layton"

This week Tracy and Angela from Lesbiangamers.com review the new WiiFit and give a sneak peek into a demonstration of it from Tracy. They discuss the merits and flaws of WiiFit as a fitness device as well as revealing that Xena boat story you viewers asked for.

Also reviewed is Professor Layton and the Curious Village on the Nintendo DS — the game that confuses even intelligent adults, never mind small children.

Finally, there's some GTA IV debate calming, talk of Callisto and threesomes, and the usual viewer feedback.

    Moms who dont get gaymers!

I called my mom and told her her that my pre order of GTA arrived and her exact words were... "I don't understand a 40 year old woman's fascination with video games....."

    Love this vlog!

Just thought I'd pop in & say how much I love this vlog & how insanely jealous I am of your game/console collection. I only have an Xbox (not a 360 sadly...), a DS & an N64 but I know a few people with playstations, Xbox 360 etc so go basically live round their houses & scrounge gaming time off them ;)

I so want to get both a Wii & a 360 but there's no way I can afford both right now...just wondering, in your opinion, which do you reckon is the better console to prioritise & get first?

Thanks :) Oh and good luck to the Gers for tomorrow against Zenit St. Petersburg!

    Great vlog as usual

Great vlog as usual ladies!  Thank you for answering my question about tournaments.  I haven't really participated any either, just set them up at work.

Love the southern accents! "Hey, suga!" I was cracking up on that one.

Wow, so Angela brought out the D&D!  I played for a while my freshman year in college, then we started playing Magic.  I was really getting into it, then my friend who was teaching me left. :( Good news is we just started up another Magic group last week.  Have either of you ever played?

Sorry about the delay in sending my rockband vid.  I was trying to get the band together, but my mates are out of town and doing finals.  So I am going to just send one with me!

    Thanks for another great

Thanks for another great vlog, you guys are really cool! I'm quite new to the site so I haven't been watching you guys for long and I don't know if you've discussed this before so if you have just tell me which vlog to watch! Anyway, my question is about the Buffy the Vampire Slayer game, Chaos Bleeds. My girlfriend recently got a playstation 2 and her birthday is coming up so I wanted to get her a game for it and she absolutely loves Buffy the Vampire Slayer so I was wondering if you guys have played it and what you thought of it. Should I get it for my girlfriend or if you don't like it could you recommend anything else for PS2 that I could get her. She loves fighting games and skating games mostly. Any suggestions appreciated, you guys rock! Keep up the excellent work!
    somethingwittyandcharming's picture

    Hope you don't mind me

Hope you don't mind me jumping in here, but an awesome skating game on PS2 in Tony Hawk's Underground. You can design your own charaters and decks, the storyline is actually interesting and logical (for a skating game), it's a decent length, and has all the standard tricks and things I don't really know about because I don't actually skate.

I would say avoid Tony Hawk's American Wasteland though, it's pretty much the opposite of all the good features in THUG.

I'm not that into fighting games, but any Tekken title is usually a good bet.

    Dylan's picture

    Personally, I loved Chaos

Personally, I loved Chaos Bleeds as I'm a big Buffy fan. You don't just play one character, which is pretty cool. You get the chance to play as most of the main characters of the show, even Faith :p

It's starting to look a bit old now, but it's still great fun to play.

      I've never had trouble

I've never had trouble with Tracy's accent before, but for some reason this time I spent a good minute wondering why I'd never heard of this 'Billy' game. Because you were saying 'Bully', that's why.

It's a pretty fun game, lots of side quests and things like that, and is really quite innocent and kid friendly for the most part. Definitely has the Rock Star Games sense of humor though.

    WiiFit looks like fun

I must say, WiiFit looks pretty cool. And nice of them to put some password protection in as well. Good on them!  And there is no such thing as a shameless plug, if it is for the greater good (I are a Xena fan too)!!  So, I am off to see what you guys have up on your gamer and geek websites pronto!  But I have to say, if you guys are planning to get ready for snowboarding by playing a Wii ski game, hope that works out better for you than golf games did to prepare Tracy for the real thing. ;)  I'm just kiddin' with y'all.
    Harpy's picture

    :-)

    Sit-tay!  Yay!

I guess it's just that your accent emphasizes the two syllables while we pronounce it more in a single syllable fashion.  I can't really explain any better than that, it's not a word someone thinks of much and to hear it said that way is just cute. :-)

Southern accents are fun. The further south you go though, sometimes they're just so thick that they're very hard to understand.  You guys did well with 'Ya'll' and 'Sugah' and it made me grin.  Thanks for indulging me.

As far as screencapping Xbox games -- I'm surprised Microsoft has not been able to develop or endorse an add-on to capture live gameplay.  I think that would be a big seller.  Ah well, I don't have anything to capture yet, but when I do, I'll see how the camera works.  Thanks Angela. :-)

Definitely won't be capturing any Assassin's Creed gameplay.  Man, that game is a disappointment so far.

So, why's it taken so long to pull out the Dungeons and Dragons books?  Well, I saw how Tracy was giving them a sideways glance and all... Then that grin when they were brought out.  Hrm...  ;-)
As far as the controversy, now it's Harry Potter = Witchcraft promotion.  The same opinionated narrow-minded groups, with a platform, attempting to find fault where there is none.  I think I developed a deeper interest in D&D because of such inane assumptions.

I'm tempted to get that WiiFit now too.  Dammit.

    Hey guys,

Just wanted to let you all know that if you do go over to LesbianGeek.com at the moment and see it's just a parked domain page, don't worry! The hosting service has messed up the domain mapping for it and they're trying to fix it. They've been crap to be honest! It's taking them ages and I'm going to have to go back on the phone to them again today. Anyway, just letting you all know, it'll be back up soon!

    Wii Fit

You know I never wanted to own a wii before today! That wii fit game looks like fun though and practical.

I agree about D&D for me it was about bonding. My father and my brother and I would play together. It was one of those rare things that we all enjoyed doing and it was great for us; quality time and all that.

    Nice Update :-)

Sorry I missed the big GTA week drama but I have been working long hours lately for little pay. :-P

Seeing the Wiifit stuff really makes me want to try and scrap some cash together go get a Wii and that game. And maybe even a TV that would be big enough to see the game on hehe.

Not until after I move though I guess.

The Agency does look pretty cool if it ever comes out, it's been in development for a while and I haven't heard much coming out about it. MMOs lately have been pretty sketchy about getting through development. I was really sad when Gods and Heroes was cancelled. :(

Age of Conan is coming out really soon though so that's pretty exciting :-) They finally released a new female-avatar centered trailer which I found cool if also a bit tacky. It's on IGN.

Anyway off to register at your websites and make some posts there so that Bioware will hurry up with that KOTOR MMO that I just know is their secret project. :-)

    Wii Fit

I think Wii Fit is a fantastic idea for the evolution of gaming and its genius marketing as you've mentioned. I guess I just find myself wondering what the impact level is for it? ... im curious to know if you wake up the next morning feeling like youve done a workout or if its more of novelty thing that is meant to be fun and get you moving? I know you mentioned the BMI and weight loss applications within it which makes me think the game must have some substance .. I guess I just need more reassurance before I trade in my regular workout for a Wii workout : P
    sweetdebie's picture

    Awesome

I'm really excited about WiiFit. I'll definitely buy it after my finals are done so it doesn't distract me. I can't wait to play the snowboard game especially ^^

The "extra to love" bit was cute. I really think the password is a good idea.

    Great vlog ladies !

     ps : Evanescence rocks !

    Fight and fit

Soul Calibur 2 is great and is more fun with the dancing mat and another person to play with :D

WiiFit sounds a bit like the Eyetoy Kinetic, in that it also has password protection, for those who are somewhat shy of their "extra love" :) as well as the exercise types. Downside of the Eyetoy is that it is dependent on lighting.  Honestly, how many people have great lighting at home, especially during the day??  I'm still contemplating on getting it.

Thanks Angela, for the Dana rating :)  Dana's fit.  Yeah!  She was hilarious on the Liz Feldman vlog, in that she kept laughing lots :)

Great vlog again this week, ladies! :)

    Hey Dudettes

    Hey Dudettes,

Firstly, thanks for adding me as a buddy. I've been so busy the last couple of months I'm ashamed to admit I hadn't kept up with the vlogs however I caught up with most of them over the last couple of long weekends and I intend to stay up to date from now on.

Congratulations on your article that you mentioned. I actually first saw it mentioned on Kotaku.com which is a very popular gaming site so kudos to you.

Now I have a couple of WiiFit q's. Do you think the jogging game would work if you were on a treadmill? I'd love to know so if anyone happens to have both a treadmill and a Wiifit give it a go and tell us how it goes. I'm not sure what would happen when the Mii speeds up though I know I can change the speed of my treadmill on the fly. Actually what happens when you don't keep up with the Mii (for instance when the Mii speeds up)? Does the Mii return to you? Also, can you set the time of the jog or does it have a maximum (hoping for 30mins or so). I still don't have any consoles other than the DS so a Wiifit would mean major purchases of not only the game but the Wii, as well as a nice large screen, so I'm going to need some major justification. Not that it sounds easy to get hold of right now as I know many stores here in Brisbane have sold out. (I wouldn't buy the Wii just for Wiifit of course).

Speaking of the DS, thanks heaps for reviewing Professor Leyton as I have been interested in buying it. Despite your misgivings on the hardness of the puzzles I think it sounds like a game I would enjoy. Also please do review the World Ends With You as that is another DS title I'm dying to try. I love RPG's and I love Tokyo (in particular Shibuya) so I thought what a great mix and it's nice to see a RPG title set in modern times. Currently working my way through Phantom Hourglass (after finishing Puzzle Quest).

I also wanted to say a big thank you for your vlog and what you are doing on your websites. I do drop in occassionally but haven't commented on them (perhaps a little initially I can't remember). I will make sure I do this weekend, and as regularly as I can, as a lesbian gaming community is totally worth supporting and I'd love to be a part of it and watch it grow and evolve. Good work gals, keep it up!

    Hope you don't mind me

Hope you don't mind me answering your wii fit jogging question.

I don't have a treadmill at home so haven't tried combining it with the wii fit, but I do know that after you've been on the 3 minute run a couple of times you unlock the 'free-run'. It's another running simulation in which you take a run around nice scenary. There's no trainer mii running with you so you can't take over him. When it's first unlocked the longest you can do is 20 minutes, but I now seemed to have unlocked a 30 minute run (it goes up in 10 minutes so you can only run for either 10, 20 or 30 minutes).

Incidently, on the 3 minute run, if you do take over your trainer then it gives you another character to follow, at one point I ended up following a dog to a farmhouse when I overtook my mii trainer.

I've had loads of fun with the wii fit and would recommend it to anyone it has a range of games that are really fun.

    Great Episode

Another fun episode- you two crack me up! The southern accent was actually pretty good.

I tried the Wii fit, and I thought it was just ok (pole dancing aside). Of course, that might have to do with the fact that you need some coordination to actually do well, and I have no such coordination! And don't worry about looking dumb in front of people, I think DDR still outshines the Wii Fit in that category.

How can Mortal Kombat not have the fatality moves? The 15-year-old-teenage-boy part of me just died a little on the inside.

And I agree with Angela about D&D- I only played casually when I was younger, but it seriously helped my math skills like you wouldn't believe.

    Cool vlog again :) You

    Cool vlog again :)

You made exercise seem like fun. Weird :p

You're right about the Wii prompting all kinds of people to buy it, and the games. My uncle just got Wii fit, and he's in his 50s. Also, my mum - who also doesn't really get the game thing - wants a Wii!!!! That's just crazy...lol I think the devs and promoters of the Wii are pretty much bang on if their aim was to get everybody gaming.

Adding the lesbian gamers site to my bookmarks right now :)

    You two!!! hehe

First and foremost I must say that you two are by far the cutest couple that I have ever seen! Very, very cute. I love that afterellen has such a variety of topics that are discussed in the video blogs as well as the written ones. That is very hard to find. Tracy and Angela I wanted to thank you for these vlogs as they are one of my favorite things to watch, and they must take a lot of time to make. That's so awesome you guys were able to met Hudson, my fav. bad girl ever. Well besides Number six from bsg. She's pretty tough to beat. I will be sure to check out lesbiangamers.com.

And I'd like to ask, am I the only one who is bothered by the way lesbian sounds, why can't we all just be gay? I don't get it. Everytime I hear lesbian, I think of a foreign bean dish. ughhh.

    Dr. Crusher??

Crusher was so hot ...No love for the good Doctor, Angela??

    plugs = done.

Here's my problem with WiiFit ... it doesn't trick me enough into exercising. Firstly, Pirates DON'T do Yoga. I'd puncture something. Secondly, (and this is why I love Wii Sports) is that I need to lulled into playing a game to get a workout successfully accomplished. I can't have a gym membership for that very reason. The exercise is just way too deliberate.

Triplets of Belleville = genius. Crazy puzzle game? not so much.

There is NO shame in using hints!!!

.......if SingStar gets some good, decent pirate drinking songs ... I'll think about it. Otherwise, I'm keeping my anonymity, thank you!

I would add to the D&D defense league, that say that roll playing ESPECIALLY helps with story telling and freedom of imagination, which leads to improved reading comprehension ... I had a pair of dice in my hand by age 8, and I loved it. which leads me to my next point,

Angela, WHY have you not started playing World of Warcraft???!!!! It's D&D ... fleshed out!!

Speak what we feel not what we ought to say...

    Bully

My sister wanted to play that game, so she rented it over Christmas break and was not thrilled when she found out that you had to be in class on time and actually do school work.

She also plays GTA in a polite manner. She stops at all the red lights, and lets the hookers cross the street.

I guess I would like Bully, but you have to think, and I am not a big fan of thinking, which is probably why I am in Accounting. When you are gaming you should be able to turn off your brain.

    art-a-miss's picture

NO NO NO NO NO NO!!!!!!!!!!!!

    RIP mortal combat *tear*

hello soul caliber and GTA IV!!!

    where are the racing games????!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!

i love my wii fit but only after softball practice for a nice cool stretch =]

    desperate_times's picture

    Funny you should mention that...

I laughed when you talked about the expanding 'Mii' characters as the UK ads for the game show that happening to an unsuspecting gamer. Another great vlog, I admire the way you dealt with the GTA4 backlash/ debates, and enjoyed the WiiFit clips :)

RE: Dungeons and Dragons. I was born a little late for it I think, but got into Warhammer (possibly the only hobby more expensive than gaming) and those books that tell you to 'go to page 36 to fight the dragon, or 124 to turn and run', so i guess I would have been into it if I'd had the opportunity.

Good luck with your PhD Tracy! What will you be studying (if you don't mind me asking)?

    I really loved that you

I really loved that you posted a video of your Wii fit training. I began to talk about buying the game but my gf gave me a strange look. Maybe I should take advantage of my gymcard instead... but seriously I think I'm gonna buy it.

Noticed the vlog-logo on the tv in the background. Very profesional!

    Quirky Koala's picture

    I love wii fit. I wasn't

I love wii fit. I wasn't sure about it when my brother bought it but it's a fun game for all the family. My mother loves the hula hooping, my father goes on all the yoga exercises, my brother plays on all the aerobics and I go on it all (although I love the step program). It's something for all the family, although remember to close the curtains! I was on doing the hula hoop training when I noticed some people stood a my front gate laughing at me.

I also have a question, if you don't mind me picking your brains. A friend has told me that Nintendo are developing leg sensors for the wii, to go with games like Fifa. Have you heard anything about this or is he lying?

P.S. I'm really jealous about how many games you guys have.

Thanks for adding me as well as a buddy. Wiifit sounds like fun, but I want Mario Kart first lol . Speaking of games, are you guys Animal Crossing Fans? I can't wait till that arrives for the wii, whenever the helll that is. GTA was great for my agression release before I opened up the game store I worked at lol but I'm glad I wasn't around for that launch of the GTA IV. Great Job girls :) We should all exhcange wii numbers. :)

    Great Vlog as always

Yeah it's true, big tele = Xbox360 = late nights and gaming bliss. It's pretty much a no brainer.

XENA CRUISE!! I didn't know their was such a thing as a floating convention! Kinda scary too due to the lack of escape routes. Loved the Dana rating and Tracey on her Wiboard. I want one.

Also, if we're making requests for soundbites could Tracey say "there's juice loose about this house" (in A Rowntrees stylee) and Angela say "flamin Galar" pretty please

Good luck with your PhD, what's it in if you don't mind me asking?

I just want to say, that you have a really great Vlog which I look forward too every week. I think it's really great how you give viewer feedback and get us involved and I always love your reviews. I'm definately going to go and register with Lasbiangamers and show my support. Also, thumbs up for Scott he sounds great.

    Curious Village

I bought this game a few weeks ago.  The puzzles are great and not easy.  I really like it as a break from the usual.  If I only have a few minutes I can play a puzzle and be done.  I don't seem to have time lately to dedicate to Mass Effect.  Last time I turned it on I couldn't remember what I had been doing and my mission.

Thanks for another great vlog.  Envious of all your games and big TVs.  Have to work on getting a bigger TV.  Now I'm off to check out lesbiangamers.com

    damn the curious villiage

I was stuck on this game for such a long time that i even did the unthinkable and looked at the walkthroughs on the internet, how little kids are suppose to get these puzzles when grown ups cant is beyond me.

Wii Fit rocks, i was very shocked when it did my weight etc and said i was 'obese' lol that is enough to give anyone the will power to do it everyday.

Oh and i havent got Singstar but i got Guitar hero so if thats included ill get a video together of me and my fiance doing it shes better at it than me.

Keep it up girls, your wicked, just gonna go to lesbiangamers now to support ya.

    Stupid T-Rex

Lara Croft vs the T-Rex in Wii’s Tomb Raider Anniversary is not going well. Sigh.

Sorry to hear that your beloved Rangers lost in the final : ( Sucks big time. Perhaps you could set up a rematch in FIFA ‘08 and get a better result.

Loved the vlog again this week. I was telling my girlfriend about Wii Fit and I swear that my PS3 gave a huge disgusted sigh in the background! Rude, I’m telling you! Wii FIt does look really cool and I agree with you in giving Nintendo huge props for keeping it simple and marketing it all so well. I can't help thinking that the Nintendo folk and the Apple folk went to the same marketing school of white - keep it simple + colour it white = uber huge sales all around the world.

    PS – Go the Blues!!

    Pambi's picture

    MER!

So, this week has been interesting, it's been my first week out of college and Ive gone stir crazy, so I've played abunch of games. I was wondering if you know of any games similar to Dead Rising and Devil May Cry 4, those two have been my focus this week.

Oh, if anyone lectured me in a strong accent I would prolly be distracted.

Wii Fit, is something I loved. The balance, soccer mode made me reconsider ever wanting to play soccer again. The balls go so fast, and I actually fell off and hit my bed on it. However, skiing is alright. The aerobic/yoga things, kind of bored me within 2 seconds. I can see how the game is appealing to everyone though, because, while i hated yoga, my mother and father loved it. Oh and holla hoops is indeed funny to watch people play, we had about 7 boys doing the holla hoop thing at one point or another, and that alone is black mail for a lifetime. Which reminds me, when do we get to see your holla hoop clips, I'm not sure which would be more amusing, that or singstar. Hmmm.

D&D is great, a lot of kids get trashed for playing it, but I just think its fun.

    awesome vlog

thanks for telling us about the Xena convention cruise and Hudson leick signing "fancy a threesome" that would have made my life.!!!!!!

as for fighting games I remember growing up and hearing all the fuss over mortal kombat...and you know what my mother did even though I was all of 8 years old...she went out and got the game for me and watched me play it...and laughed at the graphics...and the situations the characters where being killed in...chucking it all up to the dumb unrealistic way the fatalities where....she said jokingly once  " yeah I can totally see my 8 year old in ninja gear in a dungeon killing a skulled creature by impaling them on a row of spikes even though she trips over her own two feet"....(which by the way I still sometimes do...clumsy me)..god I miss my mom I swear sometimes I wish more people where more level headed like she was.... she had similar thought on soul calibur and street fighter and the early GTA games...not to mention she also said that " mortal kombat and other fighting games didn't effect me like cowboys and Indians didn't effect her as a child"

I haven't herd of professor Layton and the curious village...I have to pick it up if the animation is anything like the triplets of belleville...because I LOVED that movie!!!

I can just see the new wave of advertisements for wii fit...something along the lines of bally total fitness...by this game now and lose 20 lbs in 30 days! or something to that effect.

2nd time posting something like this

I had a post earlier, but the internet eated it.

I really enjoyed PLandtheCV for my commute to and from work. I would usually be able to get through a bunch of puzzles and then get stuck on one just as I was getting to my destination. It was great. My least favourite puzzles were the ones where you had to move the things around.

But the 20 sided die! Very awesome. I have to get one for my friends soon to be born daughter. To make sure she is born a gamer, we're going to be having an All Flesh Must Be Eaten session the weekend before she's due :D Which leads me to a question for all the tabletop gamers. How do you go about creating your character? I usually have an idea for a character and try to allocate stats and pick out skills/talents that would suit it.

Oh, another Rockstar game you have to get is Table Tennis (because it's more fun as a video game than in real life)

    WiiFit

The first time I watched your vlog and then this: you convinced me of getting WiiFit as per the clips, I have had it for three days now and ... my stupid thigh muscle hurts like hell. This thing is NOT a toy, it´s a mean machine!!!

And I love it. I am now waiting for TopSpin3. Waiting. Waiting.
