u people
I wish I was there, it looked like fun. and Hanifah was wearing a beaver cafe shirt!
I have a u people moment I think i should share. A couple of weeks ago I went to our hair cutter's with my mom and sister. Our hair cutter started saying how people have certain tendencies and behaviors depending on their color. He was saying how you couldn't trust black people and they were violent and that asian people all had been though so much and needed to be rewarded....which came out as the true reason for why he gave us free haircuts and dye jobs even though it makes us feel uncomfortable...I mean come on, if we don't want it they why? There is just no respect. My sister and I argued with him and he just kept on spewing racist crap until we left.

Powerful
The conversation with Jamel in episode #8 started out a little awkward, but I definitely found myself saying "me too" as he progressed. Growing up biracial, I definitely had those same experiences around the same age.
I remember my mom coming to parents' day when I was in grade school and, as the parents congregated, someone asked: which one's your mom? No one ever really talked about it again--mainly because my mom bought everyone at our lunch table ice cream everytime she visited, thus ensuring her popularity--but I remember the realization that people didn't look at her and automatically see me as her child, as being very, very painful to deal with at such a young age.
It's powerful to remember that none of our experiences, however, isolating they feel is unique--someone, somewhere shares your path.
That is the truth!
Pecola, I think your statement is exactly why its so great to have this vlog - to show through the power of sharing, that we are not alone. Its not about race, sexuality, gender, religion, color of your hair, your size, or any of a million other things that people use to separate us.
The phenomenon of "the other" is something that many of us experience daily. And its great to be able to show evidence of it through this vlog to a wide audience.
I have to respond to the statement that Jamel made that Obama cannot be elected as president because that would cause the white "establishment" to say that there is no longer any racism. I respect his opinion, but I have to say I disagree with his conclusion. Right now, you have people who may believe that there is no racism, and you may have other people who are very aware that there is racism. That knowledge alone doesn't alleviate injustices, and inequalities from occurring. Just sitting there and saying "racism exists" doesn't alleviate racism. The act of having someone elected President who happens to be black is a more powerful statement about the growth of the citizens of the country, than not having a President who is black. It doesn't mean that suddenly there will be the thought that there is no racism, just as much as having Bush as President has made us believe that there are no stupid people in the country. If anything, it brought the issue to a head! You have to think about where the power lies, and where the growth occurs. And seeing how he unites people of all ethnic backgrounds, genders and sexualities - moreso than any other candidate I've seen so far, is a powerful thing, that for me, an independent American of African descent, is enough to give him my support.
Great vlog - thanks for providing us the opportunity for this type of discourse!!
