U People: Episode 16

Hanifah and Olive traveled two hours to Jersey to visit friend and playwright Zina Camblin as her new play And Her Hair Went With Her debuted at the New Jersey Rep. Later that night, they sparked a lively conversation about the rarely sighted Black Obsessive-Compulsives, dyke dives and gold-star lesbians. Plus, a U People story that involves one woman's struggle with fried chicken.

Episode No. 16: "Clean Cups, Dives and Gold Stars"

Note: We had some technical glitches in this episode, so the picture may be a bit fuzzy, but we still managed to come up with the usual good stuff. Check us out at www.iloveupeople.com!

I'm a few stops south in Asbury Park!

    Great

    Great vlog as usual ladies.
I took special notice of Zina and her cute-self during the U-People screening so I was especially glad to see her again (sporting my haircut). So when is she bringing the play to the DC area?
    One love.

    I love u people website

I have been visiting the iloveupeople website. It is nice. Actually, great. I watched the videos and listen to samples of the mixtape. Seriously thinking about getting that card real soon so I can download. Toshi Reagan is great. Does she have a website. Also Jade Ross is great too.

I'm glad someone is talking about Black Obsessive- Compulsive disorder. My mother has that. It was a mess to deal with her disorder.

I thought the Fried Chicken story was great.

    I'm not a Gold-star lesbian either,Hanifah.  It's interesting that lot of bucthes aren't gold-star lesbians.  Ooo wait. I'm not a butch. It's all good.

I don't know a dyke dive in my city. I don't think we have one. Oh ,I do remember when I was a teen there was one, but it closed. I forgot the name of it though . I'm so bad when it comes to recalling names of things from my past.

Does Zina have website? I like to see A-A women making a splash in the playwrighting world. You know it's not many out there swimming around.

Keep up the good work Olive and Hanifah!

    Gold Star in the house!!

Woo I'm a gold star, but I've also yet to be with a woman so I guess that makes me a pitiful star lol

Anyways loved the vlog as usual, here in godforsaken Louisville, our local dyke dive is called cawthorns. Yay you guys are coming close to me I might have to gather some friends and head up there so they can see this wonderful film!!

Oh and I too took special notice of Zina in the film, isn't she like practically married or something if I recall correctly. and yes where can we get more info on her?

    great tastes

Hey Journey_Wmn, I guess we have similar tastes in women huh? And if Zina's practically married, that's fine with me. Sometimes it makes the fantasies better when there's no chance in hell. Case in point my super-duper-huge crush on Rose Rollns. Oh and another thing we have in common: we're both Gold stars. And not having been with a woman yet is not pitiful by any means. I think it makes sense to take your time and wait for the right woman. Imprints of our sexual partners stay with us forever so it makes sense to be selective.

    Hint

Do not worry I cannot caught a hint either; you have to blaunt most the time. I the fried chicken bit was funny; you have to just laugh.

I live in Berkeley and I

I live in Berkeley and I love the White Horse! And I don't even like bars usually. But it's such a fun place and I think it's the second oldest gay bar in the country:)

Oh no, Olive did not rip off her hat, lol. "I don't like rules." LOL neither do I, Olive. We Jamaicans just do it however we feel, u zimmi?

Charlie! Wow - it wasn't just me!

Interestingly, I used to call that perfume, Charlie (with a french accent - sharlay!!) But I was so into that perfume - after that, it was Anais Anais! Does anyone remember that?

Anyway, since then, I've lost my attraction to perfume, interestingly enough!

With respect to lesbian bars...in D.C. where I used to live, there was the "Hung Jury" before it closed down...then Chaos on Wednesdays - don't know if its still going, and of course Bar Nun on Sundays which is still very much open, I believe. We've moved to Philly area now, and here, it seems the most well-known is "Sisters"

I love your hats by the way - if you know of an online store where you can get these hats, please let me know.

I always look forward to your blogs - thanks for keeping them coming!

    First of all ...

You two are FREAKIN' AWESOME!!! (You too Zina!)  This is easily my favorite vlog on AfterEllen.  And the best "dive-esque" bar here in Mobile, AL is easily Gabriel's.  They've got karaoke on Friday nights.  The highlight of my karaoke career was definitely my version of Kelly Clarkson's "Since You Been Gone"

     I RIPPED it!!

    I'm super late

It amazes me that in Atlanta, the gay mecca of the South, there is really only 1 lesbian bar, My Sister's Room. Oddly incestuous? Yes, but we keep it moving. There are other clubs that have dyke nights (Club Miami) but it's not like the gay boy clubs. WetBar (Popular white gay guy club), Bulldogs (Popular black gay guy club), Swinging Richards (Gay male strip club), and Towers ? - I don't know it's something phallic.

I've seen some of the hottest women I've ever seen in my life at Wetbar. I've fallen in lust so many times at Wetbar, it's ridiculous. All the gay dudes bring their hot curious fag hags. *Sigh* Good times. I haven't been in awhile.

I'm BOC too although, I'm not really a germophobe. I'm more of a disorder hater. Everything should have its place, man! I've gotten alot better about it now.

I'm not a goldstar lesbian, I'm actually...a dirty bisexual. For shame!

    tadow!

me and the girl who posted above you went to the A and looked for My Sister's Room but i got kinda lost, even with a GPS system. Seems like there'd be enough well-to-do lesbians in Atlanta to get together and open up a spot.

enter shameless plug: I just graduated. hire me for all your advertising/graphic design (kinda) needs. and hire the one above you for um. english majory needs.

    I got a dick like a mule...with a big dick.

    My Sister's Room is actually

My Sister's Room is actually in Decatur, a suburb of Atlanta. Honestly, it's kind of lame. You can try Excalibur on Tuesday's -that's lesbo night. It's funny that you say that because my friend and I were actually thinking of doing house parties every couple of weeks and inviting all the dykes and friends of dykes we know. I've had better times at house parties than at clubs. It's a lot easier to meet and mingle in that setting than clubs. There is a drought of lesbian activities in Atlanta. It's depressing.

That was the funniest story I've every heard...
