"U People" Video Blog: Episode 1AfterEllen.com is happy to bring you the first episode of the new weekly video blog U People, which follows filmmakers and partners Hanifah Walidah and Olive Demetrius on their amazing and humorous journey to bringing their new documentary U People [The Extraordinary Lives of America's Misunderstood] to the public. It also features roaming comedian Gloria Bigelow as she captures the U People stories of everyday extraordinary people on the street.
You can read our January '07 interview with Hanifah for more information about her, or watch her on the fourth episode of She Said What?. But in the meantime, here's a quick rundown on Hanifah and Olive: Hanifah Walidah is revered as one of the more prolific chameleons of the arts. Her work over the past 15 years within spoken word, music, theater and film reads like a list of cultural milestones in almost every arm of the urban arts. You don't ask Hanifah Walidah what she does, but how? Episode No. 1: "Fresh Out the Box"
*Hanifah's Disclaimer: Olive didn't have her contacts in, so she is not intoxicated, just blind. Watch it now below! Look for episode No. 2 of the U People vlog next Wednesday, and then new episodes on AfterEllen.com on Thursdays after that. Submitted by on November 15, 2007 - 1:00pm. |

Afterellen.com has now become my #1 Website
So much I now rarely visit myspace because of this site. You took over my other favorite HayHouse Radio (A Spirtitual, Wholistic, website created for those who are seeking a higher purpose, trying to better themselves in life from all areas, etc Ms.Suze Orman, the recently "out" Lesbian financial advisor, has her own show on there too.)
So AE you 're number 1!
I heard about Hanifah a long while back from Marquita on myspace. I watched her music video -loved it. This vlog is so humble and extremely creative. I like how AE keeps me in the know. I am defintely will check out Hanifah and Olive's u people website. Of course, with all of my love, most deft support Womyn of Color.
Thanks Sarah Warn and Afterellen.com crew with all my blessings and love!
ponderance
it’s fascinating, actually, that in this day and age we stand united, if only in our ability to separate.
this vlog is timely and much needed to open discussions.

I just wanted to say....
Thank you everyone!
I just wanted to thank everyone here on Afterellen.com for supporting our vlog. Your comments have been so encouraging! Olive, Gloria and I are having a ball making new episodes. I look forward to talking with you ladies more as time goes on.
Blessings,
Hanifah
Taken aback
I love the playfulness between the major players of this project and was charmed by the show of sensuality/sexuality.I felt right at home in their living room because they allowed me to be so. The words Butch and femme were either said or assumed without a detailed-less-then-entertaining-too-analytical assesing for meaning. It's evident that they are comfortable and knowledgeable about the communities they are infiltrating, and still they are full of respect. I even saw myself reflected and that is rare indeed. So thank you the Hannifah and Olive crew for their gentleness and far-sighted thinking into creating this project. Or maybe it isn't far-sightedness, perhaps it is their ability to pick the ball up where too many have dropped it for far too long.
And thank you AE for your continued effort to look beyond priviledge and perceive the other realities that are at the edges the status quo.
Thanks
Chrissy
OOPS....
I am thankful for the
I am thankful for the visibility. It is important that we get equal and fair representation.

O hell yes!
I like the U people concept being put into Vlog/Film form. Good idea. I had a gig here in Los Angeles and had a chance to talk with Hanifa and Red Summer for a quick minute and I could tell that they were awesome poeple.

SO GREAT!
Thank you everyone! ditto and double time from me to U people
I truly love all the support. We will keep it coming as long as we can. Please upload your U people stories because we would love to see and hear what you folks are feeling/saying/living.
Olive Demetrius
Afro-femme-tastic....
you better write that down and put it under a rock or they will say the rock never existed and that you never existed- susan lori parks
Olive cracked me up
when she said she started to clutch her purse everytime she saw a white man *snickers* Sounds like something I'd do. If I had a purse ;p
You two look great together... And I don't think Olive looks intoxicated without her contacts in; I thought she was a little sleepy.
Like the vlog. A lot. Keep it coming.
Oh wait... The next ep is on :)
