News, Reviews & Commentary on Lesbian and Bisexual women in Entertainment and the Media

TV Alert: "My Boys" returns tonight!

Good news, sports fans: After a 7-month hiatus, Jordana Spiro returns as fun, feisty sportswriter P.J. on TBS's hit half-hour comedy My Boys, which begins airing new episodes again tonight at 10 p.m.

I love this show because, her silly name "P.J." notwithstanding, this character is one of the best straight women on TV, as I've blogged about previously (her best female friend, played by Kellee Stewart — picture above, right — is a little too girly for my taste, but not a bad character, either). Created by a woman (Betsy Thomas), the show is also genuinely funny and well-written, and a big hit for TBS.

In a new interview with TV Guide, Jordana teases the new season (warning: mild spoilers). "Mike and Kenny start working together at Kenny's sports-memorabilia shop, and Kenny gets a girlfriend who's nine-months pregnant ... We find out Stephanie is in massive debt and needs to go to a debt counselor ... Bobby has a fun turn, but I'm not allowed to talk about that, so I'll leave that as a surprise. And I don't know if I'm allowed to say this, but I'll say it anyway: Brendan's character becomes a huge d--chebag."

Brendan, if you'll remember, is her roommate/love interest (pictured on the far left, below) with whom P.J. shared a kiss with in the cliff-hanger 13th episode. I'm guessing from Jordana's last comment that the path of true love does not run smoothly for these two.

According to Jordana, P.J. "tries out a lot of different possibilities in the dating world" in the upcoming episodes. Unfortunately, those "different possibilities" probably don't include women, but American television needs more straight women like her, so I can live with that.

Here's a photo of Jordana looking very un-P.J. like at the SAG Awards earlier this year:

I also found this photo of Jordana and Annette O'Toole from a 2000 USA TV movie called The Huntress, in which the two play a mom-and-daughter bounty hunter team. How cute is Jordana as a redhead?

    I started watching this show

I started watching this show because of Kyle Howard (Bobby). He used to be on the WB show Related which I LOVED (starring Kiele Sanchez, Lizzy Caplan, & Jennifer Esposito, and exec produced by Marta Kauffman of Friends). Anyway, when I first saw Jordana Spiro was the lead, I was iffy about the show. But she really is great, and the show is actually entertaining.  TBS is going beyond Friends/Sex and the City/Raymond reruns and they're really putting some good stuff out there.

    I really really like this

I really really like this show, and it's great to have it back on the air. It made me excited about tv (which I haven't been in quite a while), but I have to say I was kinda let down by the lesbian joke in the second episode. I think the show has a great sense of humor and didn't need to resort to such a cliched and stereotype based comment to get a laugh. But other than that, this is probably the one show on tv right now that I'd be upset to miss.
