Tony nominee Allison Janney on women on Broadway, CJ Cregg, and being funny "in spite of myself"
Allison Janney is nominated for another Tony award, this time in the Best Performance by a Leading Actress in a Musical category for her performance in 9 to 5: The Musical (not, sadly, for her role in Prop 8. The Musical). Janney won two Emmy Awards for her role on The West Wing, and was nominated for a Tony in 2002. Janney in 9 to 5: The Musical Melissa Silverstein has a new interview with Allison Janney on her Women & Hollywood blog, where Allison talks about 9 to 5, The West Wing, and working with Meryl Streep in The Hours. Here are some of my favorite excerpts from the interview:
I totally agree about needing more Broadways shows about relationships between women, but — don't shoot me — Wicked bored me a little. Great singing and green makeup, but ... eh. Just couldn't get into it. (I didn't like the The Wizard of Oz movie much, though, either, so clearly I should just steer clear of anything related to that story!)
On this I definitely agree! CJ was one of my favorite characters on The West Wing, and I loved how her character evolved over the years to become the president's Chief of Staff. One of life's great pleasures is watching a confidant, competent woman in charge.
Being funny in spite of herself is working out pretty well. If you need proof, just watch her in one of Karman's favorite movies, Drop Dead Gorgeous. Janney was hilarious, and her hair deserved its own Oscar.
Read the full interview here, and see all the other women nominated for the Tonys here. And just for fun, check out this pic of Janney on the red carpet at the premiere of 9 to 5: The Musical:

W&H: In the last season of the West Wing CJ was so amazing. What do you think it is about her that resonates?

Oh, I just love her! I
Oh, I just love her! I don't think there are many lezzie politicos out there that didn't both love/want to be CJ. Allison Janney is just amazing in every role she's in.
And this just makes my smile:

Thanks for posting this Sarah!
Allison!

Allison Janney is one of the reasons why I loved the West Wing and why I respected it so much. She was such a multi-dimensional character.
Even her new role in "Away We Go" is the reason why I want to see it, and part of the reason why I wear my "Away We Go" t-shirt a lot.
Watch this for fun too!!

Sarah?
Sadly, no
Oh CJ!
Thanks for covering AJ!
Thanks, Sarah, for your coverage of Allison Janney. She was so wonderful as CJ on West Wing and deserved all those Emmy awards she received as a result.
Will definitely be watching the Tony Awards on Sunday and hopefully AJ and 9 to 5 will take one home.
Sarah!
You don't like the Wizard of Oz?! I am aghast..
;)
Sorry but.......
........ I have to agree with Sarah on this one!
I have never liked 'Wizard of Oz' either. As a huge lover of musicals, I've tried really hard, honest! I tried to watch it as a child every christmas it was on the BBC - didn't like it! I've seen it at the theatre performed by different companies at least twice - still didn't like it! My brother is directing it this christmas - probably won't go to see it, sorry bro! I've seen 'Wicked' too and really don't understand the hype, oops!
However, I really, really hope that '9-5' is still on Broadway next year when we are planning to cross the pond for my 40th - would love to see Allison Janney in anything!
Each to their own..
Each to their own n all that :)
I personally adore the Wizard of Oz, but then again I love any kind of escapism, and the technicolor of Oz is certainly that!
We can agree though on the Allison Janney love :)
Alice Ripley
While Allison Janney is a fairly awesome person and normally I would hope for her to win, I have to root for Alice Ripley from "Next to Normal". Everything she sings in that musical (I haven't seen it yet, but I will soon) perfectly fits the emotion of the song and she's got such a powerful voice.
So can Allison Janney win second? ;)
Allison Janney vs. Alice Ripley
When I went to NYC I was wanting to root for Allison. But I couldn't. I love both women and I saw both this year (middle of April) on Broadway. That being said Alice Ripley was 1000 times better in "next to normal" than Allison Janney was in "9 to 5". A lot of that was acting but also a lot of it was the part. Alice's part is really demanding and carries the show. Allison's character is funny but not nearly as meaty as Alice's. I mean Alice is singing and crying up a storm every night on stage. And she has yet to miss a single performance. Alice was also one of the sweetest people I have ever met. She carries a lot about her fans.
That being said I will be watching the Tony Awards. Allison is nice and funny but isn't giving the best leasding actress performance on Broadway this season, Alice Ripley is.
Alice!
She is incredibly talented!
Al!!
I'm so happy I ran across this thread here and seeing people talking about Al! I've followed her career for half my life and have been lucky enough to become friends with her. She is amazing, which doesn't even cover it. This role is beyond anything she has done before, she totally deserved the Tony last night! Her timing and her emotion she puts into everything is unbelievable. She's truly a gem. Off stage, she's hilarious and intense and possibly even more beautiful.
I'm over the moon at her win! And I can't wait to spin that Tony!!!
I Loved her in
I love her and Drop Dead Gorgeous!
