Tina Fey and Amy Poehler re-enact Sarah Palin's interview with Katie Couric

Tina Fey was back on Saturday Night Live with her hilarious and eerily accurate portrayal of Republican VP nominee Sarah Palin, re-enacting with Amy Poehler Palin's now-infamous interview with CBS news anchor Katie Couric last week.

Watch it here now (and if you missed Fey's first Palin imitation on SNL, watch it here):

The most salient point made by the skit was showing how Palin ducks difficult questions by rephrasing the question as the answer, using half-finished thoughts, or acting "increasingly adorable." (Even conservative Republican columnist Kathleen Parker wrote this week that Palin "filibusters. She repeats words, filling space with deadwood. Cut the verbiage and there’s not much content there.")

But the best/scariest aspect of the skit? Several lines of Palin's (Fey's) answers — on topics like how she and McKain would spread democracy, and how exactly Palin has gained foreign policy experience by living near Russia — weren't even made up, they came directly from her interview with Couric (watch and read transcripts here and here).

But let's set aside the accuracy of the spoof — since that will be covered everywhere else — and get to the funny.

Favorite Fey/Palin hand gesture(s)? Pretty much all of them.

Favorite made-up line? On visiting the U.N. for the first time: "... I was disheartened by how many of them were foreigners. I promise that when Sen. McCain and I are elected, we're going to get those jobs back in American hands!" Brilliant summary of America's myopic foreign policy approach over the last 8 years.

Second favorite line? "Katie, I'd like to use one of my lifelines now." I'll bet she would!

What was your favorite line/moment/gesture? And, aside from the fact that Tina Fey is a Democrat who stands against, and is repugnant to, almost everything Republicans believe in, is there any reason the Republicans shouldn't dump Palin and make Tina Fey McCain's running mate? I mean, not to belabor the point, but can you give me even one specific reason?

    Love it

    Thanks Sarah for posting it.

I love it. And Tina Fey. Unfortunately neither Tina nor SNL are very known in Europe so most people won't ever get to see those clips. I make it a point to send or show the clips to everyone I know.

Best thing? It works even if you don't speak any English. It's that fantastic.

    Typos

It's just a typo that resulted from writing this really quickly at 4am during the one night a week I'm supposed to have off, just so you all could have it to read/watch/discuss on the site right after it happened. I could have waited and posted it next week, during normal office hours when I would have more time to proofread it, but I assumed most readers would prefer to have it up now, even if that meant suffering through a few typos.

I definitely want readers to let us know when we make mistakes, but since we have only 2 people (me and Trish) running the whole site this week - and only 3 people once Karman gets back from Switzerland - it would be great if everyone could cut us a little slack for awhile and assume that any mistakes we make are due to the fact that we're managing a huge volume of articles, blogs, vlogs, comments, and emails on a daily basis, and not because we don't care about accuracy. Thanks.

Edited to add Uh, yeah — in re-reading this comment, it seems like maybe I was way too stressed out when I wrote it. Apologies if I overreacted!

To be honest I was shocked to see this story on the site when I woke up this morning. Very impressed. Two weeks in a row you been right on top of it with the SNL stories.

    Ouch!

That was the most perfect example in snark that I've ever seen!  Superb!

Anyway, this was rather amusing.  I always tend to see a lot of American comedy shows as being a bit stodgy and obvious (although some of the vlogs on this site are the direct opposite and make me giggle like a little schoolgirl), but there are occasionally some good parts that are posted here.

    Tina Fey helps, of course...

Sarah, Thanks for the SNL video

I'm drinking coffee and just easing into the day so I decided to stop in at AE.  Hey!  Is that a new video with Tina Fey and Amy Poehler or is that the old one from a couple of weeks ago?? OMG!  Its a new one!  Yay, yay!

Sarah, thanks very much, typo's and all.  This made my Sunday and proves yet again that After Ellen is the "go to blog" for the hottest news.  And all you nitpickers, lay off!  Let's see you type something at 4:00 a.m. and not have a typo.  Be glad ya got it at all.  Sheesh.

Okay anyone else but me have the sudden urge to setup a Starbucks fund for the AEWG (AfterEllen Writers Guild)? Ladies, as much as I appreciate your attempts to keep us informed, no need to stress yourselves out. Heart attacks and strokes are not allowed on my watch! Oy! (when did I turn Jewish?) I promise we'll be nice to you; after all, this was a hilarious contribution!

BTW I was serious about that Starbucks fund! I'd do it if people would donate! Heck I'll even throw in the first $20.

OMG, I almost feel sorry for her. It reminds me of of when I did a presentation at uni knowing I was totally unprepared for it and that I was making no sense even to myself. At least I had the sense to admit it and sit back down, albeit very red-faced. Not only should the world be very worried if this lady becomes Vice President (and very possible President) but Alaskans should probably start looking for a new Governor already.

Well done for posting so quickly Sarah

Absolutely brilliant skit, says it all basically, god help the world if this woman becomes VP, it will be a nightmare for all of us, if Americans vote McCain into office.   Not a fan of Hillary but something tells me that perhaps Sen Obama made a big mistake not taking Hilllary as his running mate.  They would have made a formidable team.  Looks like McCain may have scored some points getting this woman as his running mate to gain those extra votes.   I think if the Republicans win, it may be because of Palin's glamour and the fact she appeals to the ordinary public voters, but i'm afraid to say to the detrement of all of us.

    zephyr's picture

    The most telling part

...is Amy Poehler's reaction as Katie Couric.  You can see how stunned Couric is at every response from Palin.  It's like oh my holy god this woman might actually become the Vice President of the United States.  Lord help us.  SNL allowed the Couric character to have much longer pauses then in the actual interview, but it wasn't far off the mark.  During the real interview Couric looked like she wanted to say so much more, but had to be very respectful.  It is so spooky that the SNL parody is not so different from the actual interview.  Twenty years ago someone like Palin would have been ripped to shreads by every news media outlet even the ones on the right.

The first Palin/Clinton skit is still my favorite.  If they go through with the VP debate, I'm guessing SNL will do a parody of Palin vs Biden.  That should be interesting.

    More kudos to Tina Fey

That was amazing. I'm starting to love Tina Fey more every day!

I also think it's admirable how someone who is so distant from Palin politics-wise can portray her so incredibly well. Especially the complete rambling nonsense near the end was fantastic.
All I can say is kudos to Tina Fey!

    I'm torn

Truly torn. On the one hand, Fey is a comedy genius and I can't get enough of her. On the other, I hope to God she can put this character to bed come November. Please God, don't let this moron become VP. Think about it - if Fey had made her up, we'd be screaming from the roof tops not to denigrate the capacity of a woman to run the nation. But THIS woman? If in doubt, ask her about the rape kits. http://www.nytimes.com/2008/09/26/opinion/26fri4.html?_r=1&em&oref=slogin

Tina Fey is great! But remember, it's acting!

Tina Fey would be fantastic in continuing her appearances on SNL as Sarah Palin, but remember, it's acting and there's no way we can let the republicans in for another term.  Everyone needs to vote, to go out and participate in our freedom to vote for a "leader" of the people of the USA.  I can't believe Bush was voted in those two terms, and remember, I can I can't believe because I think it was all 'fixed!'  But get out and vote NOT to allow 'that woman' in our white house, or better yet, not the republican party.

    Amy Poehler/Katie Couric's blinks

To be quite honest, it was funny in the real interview and its funny in the SNL skit, too!

With source material that's really this hilarious, our comedy writers might be in a bit of trouble . . .

I think I liked it most when

I think I liked it most when Tina copied the whole 'licking the finger and waving it' gesture. When I saw that earlier in the actual Palin interview I could not believe it. It was so frackin' awkward-slash-funny.

    Palin's Interview

    www.myspace.com/lunakiss7

I went to the Sarah Palin interview conducted by Katie Couric . I simply can't believe Palin has a mind of a elementary school kid. She has no idea what she's talking about or how to respond to difficult questions  asked by a professional journalist.  I'm not a Republican, but I sure would have picked a better vice president candidate. Who we pick as president sets the tone on how the United States look from the world's view. Some countries already think we're idiots. There are people out there still painting that picture.  I heard  a critic tell a reporter on one of the news stations tha tshe thought  Obama was too intellectual. This is a response after the Mcain-Barrack political debate. Yeah, ok.  And I got to thinking maybe America isn't ready for a  change ,maybe some of us feel complacent following and admiring idiots. Maybe the sky is really falling and I need to beleive it is.  Afterall,  Palin is the executive  president of a state  that is merely separated from Russia by maritime  and she initates herself as an expert on foreign policy because she can see a foreign country from her window.  If McCain and Palin wins I will never tell anyone I'm an American. I would feel so embarrassed.

Positive Note: Sarah and Trish,  you two are doing a fabulous job with little staff you have. Trust  me I know how it feels. I work in a hospital. We're most of the tie short staff. Blessings to you and I hope you all get some rest.

    I missed the interview

I missed the interview with Katie do to work. Watching the SNL skit I was laughing. Now watching the real interview I was sickened. The skit was not far off from the real thing, which scares the shit out of me.

I made the mistake of drinking my coffee while watching the interview and almost spit out my coffee allover my computer. When Palin literally said Pakistan is the bad guy and Israel was the good guy. If she is elected in to office how is this going to help deal with Pakistan and try to work for compromise, if she has offended them before taking office. Now that was good “diplomacy” don’t you think?

Lots of funny stuff but I think the funniest line was I would like to use one of my life lines, to call a friend.

    ~H~'s picture

    Brilliant!

The current political climate is prime for comedians (and late night talk show hosts ) and in this arena Tina Fey and Amy Poehler are reigning supreme right now. Their first skit still makes me laugh.

As I watch the actual interviews again, I am stunned by the accuracy of these parodied portrayals.

CBS Katie Couric Interview with Sarah Palin

    StuntDouble's picture

    Amy Poehler

Almost as funny is the way that Amy Poehler mimics how Katie Couric talked to Sarah Palin like she was a Kindergartener. Poehler had the eyelash flutter down, but did a much better job than Couric with the long, bemused stare. (Which is how I watched the original interview in its entirety.)

Best line: "Every morning when Alaskans wake up, the first thing they do is look outside to see if there are any Russians hanging around. If there are, you gotta go up to them and you gotta ask them, 'What are you doing here?' And see if they can give you good reason. If they can't, then it's our responsibility to be like, 'Shoo, get back over there.'"

    spotticus's picture

    That skit was spot on!

Tina and Amy are really having a field day with this skit. Unfortunately, the reality of the actual interview was both sad and somewhat scary. Parker's article shows that McCain's pick of Palin for VP has been very damaging to the republican brand, among other things.

    that was hilarious

Thanks for posting this for us Sarah. I missed it last night and was glad to see this up. Tina Fey nailed it, again. Loved the comments she made on Russia...and thanks for posting the transcripts to compare what she actually said. Quite scary. The lifeline bit was great too...then when she finished an answer in the middle of a sentence...ha.

So funny! Yet not a dang bit funny...

Tina Fey's pew pew pew gestures and cutesy wink representing Palin being "adorable" when even stumped for a classic filibuster answer was both ridiculously funny:) AND scarily not funny at all...
    lauriek67's picture

Is it odd that I find Tina hot even as this whack job Palin?

I never posted before, but I must say Tina Fey does a great job. Sarah Palin does scare me. Even  a little more than Bush did when he was elected twice.
    pecola's picture

    Tina Fey, ftw (again)!

The opening sketch was hilarious. It didn't take me long to realize the language symmetry between it and the actual Palin-Couric interview and it only made me laugh even harder. After the sketch, a friend quipped that the McCain campaign was going to offer Tina Fey $10M to debate Joe Biden on Thursday.

As much as we love the impression and the funny, yet sad way in which comedy imitates reality with Sarah Palin, this must end on November 4th. Sarah Palin does not need to be a 72-year old heartbeat away from the presidency.

But if the opening sketch got me a little excited about the upcoming SNL election series on Thursday nights, the two other political sketches--the presidential debate and Bill Clinton's appearance on Weekend Update--worried me a little bit. They weren't nearly as funny and, the debate sketch was just bad.
