News, Reviews & Commentary on Lesbian and Bisexual women in Entertainment and the Media

There's something about Marija...

Marija Serifovic (pictured above, center) took Europe by storm this weekend when she won the 2007 Eurovision Song Competition, which was watched by an estimated 100 million people worldwide. Is Marija a lesbian? She's not saying -- but her lesbian-ish performance in the contest (watch it here), and her refusal to to publicly disavow rumors that she's a lesbian, or bow to international pressure to dress more femininely, has made her a huge hit with lesbians around the world.

Here are some more photos of Marija:

And here are some photos of Serbians celebrating her win this weekend:

Finally, here are the lyrics to "Molitva" ("Prayer") in English:

I'm wide awake
An empty bed drives my dreams away
Life melts like ice
Disappears in the twinkling of an eye

I'm losing my mind,
Pushing reality out of sight
Our lips are touching softly
You're the one I believe blindly
I walk around like crazy
Falling in love frightens me
Days are like wounds
Countless and hard to get through

Prayer...
It burns my sore lips like a fire
Prayer...
Thy name is something I admire
Heaven knows just as well as I do
So many times I have cried over you
Heaven knows just as well as I do
I pray and live only for you

I can't lie to God
as I kneel down and pray
You're the love of my life
That's the only thing I can say

I somehow can't imagine a woman who dresses like Marija singing those words on American Idol. Especially not with women in suits suggestively holding hands in the background. Actually, I can't imagine a woman who dresses like Marija getting on American Idol at all, even if she was singing "When a Man Loves a Woman" with straight couples making out on the floor next to her. America might be progressive in some areas, but Europe puts us to shame in this department.

You can read more about Marija at Wikipedia, see more headshots at her official website, and see more photos of her performance at Eurovision here. Also check out AfterElton.com's article on why the Eurovision Song Contest is The Gayest Pop Show on the Planet.

    Eurovision winner

I happened to catch the Marija performance (channel surfing, I swear).

She has a great voice. The girl-on-girl action between the backing singers was pretty good, too. Not only were they 'suggestively holding hands', they were using those hands to sort of rub each other (and Marija)

    She was back on Eurovision

She was back on Eurovision last night! Still as beautiful as ever - I do love her!  I think she will be good for Eastern (and Western) Europe in that she doesn't seem to care what others think about her, or feel the need to shout about whether she is gay or not.  She's great.

We had a Eurovision party and were playing the "gay man or eurotrash" game with every man who came on screen, and when she appeared the whole room yelled "dyke!" really loudly... and then more than one of our phones beeped with our respective mothers messaging us to find out if the person on screen was a man or a lesbian. ha.

It's a fabulous night in the inner suburbs of Melbourne because as different countries come on screen you can hear various houses around the area explode with cheers and patriotism for cheesy cheesy pop music.

    YES!

O yes! The translation! O come the hell on! She is not singing that song for a man! Only some major dyke drama could pull those sentiments out of her. That's some forbidden dyke love right there. And yes...dyke drama is universal!

    First year I didn't watch

First year I didn't watch and a fairly good song wins. Have to say I am 99% sure I have heard it before though!

During the voting when i saw

During the voting when i saw her in the waiting room I always thought that she was pretty cozy with one of the black haired (the shorter one)background singers....maybe that was because she was holding hands with her in the performance...? Did anyone notice that too? Especially in the winning performance.... all that was missing was kiss... *sigh* guess i can't have everything....

But... everytime Marija showed up on the screen my gaydar was humming like a bee on crack... :)

Anyways very gay performances from countries that are actually very backwater when it comes to gay issues (Ukraine and Serbia). It's a good sign.

P.S.: My French is rusty at best and my english is not much better but this i noticed.

English text.... it is probably not a word by word translation from the original text, when i compared the english with the french text there were some disparities... this leaves me wondering what she was really singing about and what we are missing (subtext/maintext)

    PRIERE

    Le ciel le sait aussi bien que moi ;
    Combiens des fois j’ai répeté
Que ton nom est ma seule prière

Mais je ne peux mentir à Dieu
    pendant que je prie
et je ments si je dit
    que je ne t’aime pas

    yeah!

I think my eyes were glowing right when the bacround singer and marija was holding hands!!! I really tought there was kiss going to happen! maby if those  others didn't get hugging we may be writing how sweet that kiss was... And oh! if I was marija I totally had kissed her! ;)

    Yassou Marija!

I'm very pleased she won, it's about time a lesbian wins this show (and Celine Dion doesn't count..).

Cailean, my wife and I also noticed the "bond" between her and the black haired one. If we weren't hosting a party at the time, maybe we would have gone to DTM (that's the main gay club in Helsinki) to see if that's were they went to celebrate :-D

The Ukrainean song was also a lot of fun, and I liked Hungary too. Hell if I know how Russia got to 3rd place though (I mean, I know how they got there, I just don't think it was deserved).

    LOL unitpurple... I am glad

LOL unitpurple... I am glad i am not the only one... *G* I admit i liked the Georgian one she looked nice and kinda sounded like Bjork and Moloko to me ... refreshing really and not what i expected from a country like Georgia ... the Ukrainean song was fun... totaly without anything that could make sense... just fun.. Hungary was to much drama for me paired with music that is not my style *shrug*... Concerning Russia: Hmm... could be the same way Turkey gets good votes from Germany, Austria and France? But honestly i thought it wasn't that bad. Way better than the UK, Greece (hope i didn't offend here -->Yassou Maria *G*), Turkey, Sweden, France and lots of other songs which we didn't hear because they flunked out in the semifinals...
so close and yet so far's picture

    yes!

unit purple that is so true thats what i thought. did you see them after she won they were cought on camera for a little while and they were staring in each others eyes and smiling than the others came and kinda started hugging them but you cant hide the chemistry there.

As posted elsewhere, don't forget katrina (and her waves)won 1997 in Dublin.  she's been out for some time, although i'm not sure whether she was out already when she won.

    my gaydar exploded

We had a Eurovision party out here (Cyprus) with some friends, which included the semi-finals.  As SOON as Marijia came on screen, our gaydars not only buzzed (and they buzzed a lot during this competition lol), they exploded.  Yeah, she's not outspoken about her sexuality, but let's face it, she doesn't really have to say anything.  Just appearing on screen the way she did made me proud of her - and her performance, along with the background dancers spoke a thousand words.  Did anyone else notice the heart motif on her hand?  And at the end when she linked hands with that brunette (btw, the chemistry between them was REALLY obvious), their half hearts made a whole one.

Call me cheesy, but I also loved the Ukrainian entry!  It was so camp and catchy!  I've been singing it all damn day LOL.

    Thanx Marija

The fact that Marija won Saturday evening meant a great deal to all L wmn/grlz on Balkans. I am from Sarajevo, Bosnia and Hercegovina and I am sooo proud of her. You should hear ppl at work today wispering around: 'Is she a LESBIAN, god forbid?' Haha.... I watched Marija on a local talk show where she to a straight question if she was a lesbian answered something like: 'Hm... I don't know, but even if I sometimes figured out I was, I wouldn't have anything against it. It is extremely difficult to be out here in former Yugoslavia, especially for a public person, so I'm not blaming her at all. She knows we know :)

    Whoa, whoa

Sorry to dissapoint you all, but there was no chemistry between Sanja (the black haired back up vocal) and Marija. Sanja is a gentle soul, she was happy and proud of her country, and especially glad for Marija because she's having a hard time here in Serbia, cause of her looks, sexual orientation and all. That's why they were signs of affection during the ending performance.

    When I saw her...

I had the feeling that she might be a lesbian.  Yes, I was watching it here in Berlin, but more than that, I was listening, since I was on the net too.  I saw her singing and though... she looks like a lesbian... she probably is!  And then I turned the TV off (because I found some Helen-Nikki (Bad Girls) videos on YouTube, and didn't watch to see who won the competition.
My gaydar was telling me... I guess she is!
    lesbian without borders

    She is a lesbian...

I saw them peform at one of the pre-final shows in the Eurovision Village (in Helsinki)and even my gaydar isn´t working as efficiently as I´d hope, she really left no doubt about her sexuality! There has also been several articles at the local papers where she has been mentioned being openly gay... And even though their (sorry! I know that she is basicly a soloartist but I have to say they since the back-up-girls are SO HOT!!) music isn´t exactly my taste (I heart Melissa and Heart etc.) I voted for them and not because of her being a lesbian but due to the simple fact that their voices and the performance was totally fantastic!

It´s true that the Eurovision Song Competition is the Gayest Pop Show in the world. It has always had a huge gay following and it really showed in Helsinki as well...There were also guite a few rainbow flags at the Final among tens of different country flags : ) One of the main newspapers even declared that we just had the biggest ever Helsinki Pride this weekend! LOL from Finland!

    My totally straight

My totally straight co-workers were saying stuff like "could she have been any more of a stereotypical lesbian if she tried?" and noting that Marija was sporting the hair, glasses and men's suit... all super super lesbian/gay. And comments like "did she have to flaunt it so much?" were also uttered. Finland might be progressive when it comes to gay rights, but not really. People are still stupid and homophopic and stupid.

Plus Hanna Pakarinen, the Finnish contestant, totally got shafted. She performed wonderfully and her song, Leave Me Alone, was awesome!

    Europe chose Marija!

"Molitva" was chosen by all of Europe to be the best of the 42 songs that participated!!! And this was a song that was said to be about love between two women, with a performance with a clearly lesbian theme!! Marija got the maximum points from 9 countries, and all but 5 countries put her among the top 10!! The one in second place only got the maximum vote from 4 countries.

The Norwegian "host" that commented on the show on Norwegian television even said that the performance looked a bit like "The american tv show "The L Word", "very classy". Personally, I loved the qute red hearts Marija and the back up singers had painted on their hands so that you could see them when they held hands.

The only thing that bothers me, is that they may have chosen the lesbian theme just to get votes - to stand out from the rest of the participants. But it doesn't bother me that much. :-) I love the song itself, and I loved the performace. Go Marija!!

    Wtf, Poland?

While I do love this winning song, I can't help but wonder why my countrymen submitted such a ridiculously outdated song like "Time to Party". First of all, it's in English. Second, way to reinforce Eastern European hooker stereotypes, Miss Lead Singer In A Tight Short Red Pleather Dress. And third, to the male dancers: the 1980s called, they want their sense of style back.

    I agree, I didn't feel THAT

I agree, I didn't feel THAT kind of vibe between Marija and that girl, it was more like 'we are good pals'. And believe me, my gaydar has never been wrong :)

    mars's picture

    I really felt that

The passion between Sanja & Marija is not to be neglected, there were multiple signs; during the performance, during the voting, during the walk to the stage for receiving the award, and last but not least :during the performance after having received the award; Sanja reached out several times for Marija, and finally: helding her hand at the very end. It couldn't be any sweeter!!!. While Marija had just won in front of approx 100 mio viewers, she also had the complete attention from a beautiful and awesome lady - if that is not like being in heaven  - I dont know what could be!!

Even if it might not  be for real, nevertherless I will keep my memories like that  - It is like a dream come true.
