Gearing up for the summer action movies, Lori and I list our favorite female action heroes of all time, from Bridget Fonda in Point of No Return (1993) to Halle Berry in Die Another Day (2002) to Michelle Yeoh in three movies, including the upcoming Mummy one.
Along the way, we lament the lack of non-martial arts roles for Asian American actresses, debate whether Harry Potter's Hermione can properly be considered an "action hero," and argue over the value of women in Bond movies. Plus: which female action heroes were the most groundbreaking? Check out our answers, and then let us know if you agree in the comments. Submitted by on April 28, 2008 - 12:22pm. |

Should I admit that I
Woo! First post!!
Should I admit that I actually have a database of my movies?
Did I just out-nerd Lori?!?! Awesome!! Hahaha!!
awesome
Don't tell anyone
I used to have mine databased. Until my hard drive crashed and burned...
Even nerdier... My dvd's are kept alphabetically. That was part started as a joke, and part habit from my video store management days...
You think my DVDs are
You think my DVDs are databased and not alphabetical? Come on!! They are databased, alphabetical and I get stressed out if they are moved out of this order!
Being a nerd is fun!
Thank god!!
Catalogues...
I catalogue my DVD collection - albeit not in what I would onsider to be any real indexable fashion* - purely because I don't have enough shelf space to keep them in their cases, so I keep them in disc files.
*I.e., I list running time, certificate, and special features, but not genre. I know what the films are about, and nobody else looks at the files, so why should I list it? Or am I not anal enough?
nerds
dvd database
You mean, not everyone has a database?
How are you supposed to know what you have if your DVDs (or books) are not
(1) databased or (2) kept in alphabetical order at all times.

carrie anne moss as trinity was hot and kicked ass
linda hamilton kicked ass
jennifer gardner as elektra was awesome
and of course angelina jolie as lara croft
Storm was totally

Word!
Famke was breathtaking in the movies. *meow*
Disney Kung fu
Angelina Jolie is awesome
Angelina Jolie is awesome !! I can't wait to watch Wanted
I'm a nerd too; I classed my dvds by genres and then alphabetically ^^
I have catalogued my dvd
...
I second Summer Glau in Serenity. She stole that show for me.
As far as Resident Evil: Extinction goes, I was very disappointed with the Ali Larter "Claire" character, I didn't think she had enough substance to her, and I wouldn't have even picked Mila's "Alice" character for that sequel, I would've chosen Apocalypse instead.
Serenity
Firstly, agree about Summer
Firstly, agree about Summer Glau, she is awesome in Serenity (and Firefly).
Secondly, I debated classifying my DVDs by genre, but where do you put movies that cross genres? I mean sure you get your very definate genre movies, but some movies fall into several different genres? That would stress me out! Alpabetical is good! I have my movies alphabetical, and then my TV shows on the next shelf also alphabetical, but sometimes I wonder if Buffy and Angel should be together and that worries me. Also sometimes I feel all the Disney should be together, but then I worry because that would mean starting to classify them by genre, and we get back to the first issue of what to do with cross-genre movies! My database lists everything from genre and runtime to cast, director, certificate, it is very anal! It makes me happy!
Wow! I am a major a nerd and clearly have some issues!!
My CDs are also alphabetical, but by artist, then chronological.
What is probably most worrying is that if I have a pack of coloured pens/pencils they have to stay in their correct order, as a gradient, I used to get really stressed out at school when I would lend them to people and they would come back all wrong!
OMG, I totally agree! Summer
I had my music in
I had my music in alphabetical order - with sub groups for bands. We all have a geeky organiser side...
Theres a really cool woman (though not a leading one) in Aliens (goes to see) ahah Jenette Goldstein as Pvt. Vasquez. She was great - but she dies in the end with this other soldier to kill one of the aliens. The best quote ever is when she is speaking to Hudson (a male soldier), I used to want to use this all the time when I got asked the whole 'Are you a boy or a girl' crap when I was younger
Hudson: Hey Vasquez, have you ever been mistaken for a man?
Vasquez: No. Have you?
And X-Men! Storm (Halle Berry) was awesome (
and hot) in that - amongst others. And the League of Extraordinary Gentleman - Peta Wilson as Mina Harker - the fight scene where her and Stuart Townsend as Dorian Grey are fighting is great :) (not the best film in the World though....and there is the whole *yawn* romantic tension)I have a feeling the Asian action woman stereotype started because of the origins of the martial arts (i.e. Asian countries), it happens to Asian men as well. (I'm not defending this - as it doesn't mean that they should only get these roles - but I can see the source of the problem). I agree it's frustrating (and out of date), and self-perpetuating, stereotypes are hard to break.
Game spin offs seem to have a good pro-female vibe. I used to own Tomb Raider on PS1 and it scared the hell outta me.
Great video :) Nothing wrong with black clothes! (Or so I try to tell my friends...)
"Hatred is blind, as well as love." - Oscar Wilde
two words: Kill Bill.
D'oh...
I curse myself for having forgotten that one!! (those two, even)
Both Uma and Daryl Hannah. Oh, and Lucy Liu. And Vivica. And Julie Dreyfus...
i totally agree
i was just about to add another comment because i forgot about kill bill
all the ladies in that movie kicked ass and looked hot doing it
I was waiting for them to
Tarantino rulez
I absolutely love Kill Bill 1 and 2! Woman seeking revenge and kicking some serious asses! Violent and sexy. Awesome!
I just can't help it : www.sogaysowhat.com

Movie database. Lori,
Movie database. Lori, awesome! Don't be embarrassed by the geekyness, embrace it :D
If you guys have a mac, you might wanna check out Delicious Library, the best movie cataloging software around. Period. Plus, it's super slick.
Carrie-Anne Moss in the Matrix, definitely! Trinity is like one of the coolest female action leads ever and in that first movie, definitely in the lead.
"Leeloo Multipass!" I LOVED Milla Jovovich in the Fifth Element. It's THE BEST MOVIE EVER! And I don't throw that title around carelessly. No, for me it really is. It might star Bruce Willis but it was Milla Jovovich's breakthrough movie and she was amazing!Vunerable and yet strong. Amazing movie and role. And of course Resident Evil trilogy. Can't beat that. Milla Jovovich is the gal to call when you want a female action hero.
I second this recommendation, ladies.
Milla Jovovich
Joan Of Arc: The Messenger with Milla Jovovich.
I absolutley love that movie. A must see for Milla fans.

OMG I totally forgot about
I use a program called DVD
I use a program called DVD Profiler.....with close to 1000 DVD's, I needed soemthing to keep my collection in order and this program works great!
As for women who kick a$$ in movies....
Uma Thurman in Kill Bill 1/2
Summer Glau in Serenity
Sharon Stone in Total Recall
These come to mind off the top of my head as pretty successful.
Others for your DVD collection include, these movies tend to be okay or worse
Aeon Flux - Charliez Theron
Ultraviolet - Milla Jovovich
The early Pam Grier stuff
Red Sonja - Bridgette Nielson (sp?)
Bloodrayne - Kristina Lokken, Michelle Rodriquez
Electra - Jennifer Garner
So I was too young for
So I was too young for the original Star Wars trilogy (the only thing I remember is Luke dangling from some building with only one arm, and the thumb parody of it on TV years later), but I have to agree with Ripley! I love the Alien Quadrilogy. I also never got into the whole 007 thing, but I remember Famke's character because she was a crazy bitch and my mom always covered my eyes during her scenes.
Wow, was Michelle Pfeiffer in Batman in the 90s? I thought it was way older :O. But I agree too that she was pretty badass, except she really resembled this French teacher I had who I really did not like so it was rather disconcerting/terrifying for me to watch her and then have to go to class...
And I liked Mr. and Mrs. Smith. It is awesome just for the eye candy factor. (Screw the plot, haha). Other picks that weren't mentioned would be Kill Bill, I guess.. man I have to watch more movies. Tilda Swinton in Narnia? Does Team America: World Police count as an action movie?
omg, inbd
I am kind of shocked!
First off I want to say that Sarah's hair looks amazing, and it has been awhile since I have watched your vlog so sorry if it has been like that haha. Anyway I am shocked because you all didn't mention anything Tarantino and I have to say this for the guy he tends to put strong female characters on screen...
Uma Thurman in Kill Bill vol. 1 & 2. If you are looking for a kick ass female lead then that is it. Even the supporting characters, Vivica A Fox, Lucy Liu, and Darryl Hannah. (Forgive if I spell anything wrong) are protrayed as being in control.
In one movie True Romance which is actually a fav of mine the character Patricia Arquette has a great (yet gruesome) scene in a hotel room where she takes out this tough mob guy. Great movie.
And most recent Grindhouse...was not really a success but still a great double feature. Death Proof is awesome just for the end. You got to see it just for that. I won't give anything away but it is great. Rosario Dawson and Zoey Bell? I think that is her name. Even Planet Terror is insane yet has strong female leads ie Rose McGowan.
Rosario Dawson was even hardcore in Sin City in her scantilly clad outfit blowing guys away with her machine gun. Too hot.
I don't believe it could be considered action so much as a grim social commentary but Battle Royale has some girls kicking ass in a no holds bar warfare where only one person survives. One character in particualar stands out because she is so cold calculating and evil.
There are more that I wish I could say, but they are not really considered action movies...I wish I could do a whole write up of all the great female leads in the last century but I don't have all day. Anywho. Great vlog.
Never met a pearl quite like you that could shimmer and rot at the same time through
Agreed!
I had a Tarantino/Rodriguez fest this past weekend with a friend, and couldn't help thinking that I'd entered some kind of lesbian heaven. Very strong female characters in most of their films (even in Jackie Brown, though she doesn't literally kick much ass).
I also have to agree with someone above who mentioned The Fifth Element. Great movie.

Tore my mind on a jagged sky...
he's a genius!
tarantino is really good at showing strong woman, I think anyway.

Tracie Thoms who I thought kicked even more behind in 'Death Proof' than Rosario Dawson and Zoe Bell.
And speaking of Rose McGowan - what about Neve Campbell in the 'Scream' movies?

I've been cataloguing my media since I was kid... This includes books, music, vids, & computer media. The best cataloguing software I've found for Win is CatVids (http://www.fnprg.com/). They also do books, music and software cataloguing programs.
I like catvid because it's just like a library... it even lets me keep track of whom I've lent stuff to and how long they've had it out.

Jennifer Garner
yeah, i know, Alias is not a movie, but still - she´s awesome
and of course the oh-so-lovely Milla Jovovich in the Resident Evil Movies...i just can´t take my eyes of her :)
last but not least the whole female cast of kill bill
More Action Heroes
Definitely agree that Ripley (S. Weaver) was groundbreaking because she didn't start out as the hero but because all the guys were inadequate and wimpy, she ended up taking charge and holding her own as the hero... a first for women I think.
Other roles for female action...does anyone remember the movie Arthur with Keira Knightly? Also another less unknown movie kinda like the Long Kiss Goodnight, would be the Replacement Killers(1998) with Mira Sorvino and Chow Yun-Fat...tons of action and Mira really kicked some butt.
And there also seems to be a theme brewing in children's fantasy movies...Eragon, The Last Legion, The Forbidden Kingdom where there are the trio of heroes (2 are men and 1 is a woman). The female character certainly can hold her own which is nice to see.
She Made Me Watch This
I love Lori's Monica Gellar-ish-ness. ;)
I'm also totally on-board as far as Angelina vs. Jennifer. I adore Jennifer Aniston.
And I agree, Sarah's hair looks very nice. First thing I noticed.
Categorizing your DVDs isn't so out there or geeky I think. I mean, you do want to be able to find them easily. For me, I have a 200-something pocket DVD/CD binder (which is now full) that I organize my DVDs in alphabetically -- While I have the cases displayed on the TV stand so people can choose the movie and I just grab it from the binder. This is also nice because I can take my movies with me anywhere without a second thought. I recommend this method. :P
I'm not going to post hate mail because Sarah hasn't seen Alien, but you really should see it. I'm not a horror movie fan and I avoid them like the plague, but I am a big SciFi fan, so I had to see it. You really should see them, they're not scary, just suspenseful.
I've never seen Tomb Raider. Can't really explain why, just haven't seen it. I will eventually.
What about Red Sonja? Probably omitted because it's not a very good movie, but still.
As I do with everytime Milla Jovovich is brought up, I mention her album 'The Divine Comedy' which came out in 1995ish. It's a must-have. Great album. I love her movies but it will always come second when compared with that album.

oh, but also one of my favorite ass kickers is Jennifer Garner... I know this isn't about TV so maybe I have to apprehensively suggest Elektra.
Famke
Famke Janssen in GoldenEye as Onatopp... OMG by far the best one!
Like Jill Bennett says: angry is sexy lol
I pretty much tend to love every bond villain (female ones)... but anyway.
And Sarah I love you for mentioning Arrested Development lol
Oh and how about Jodie Foster in The Brave One?? I don't know if it fits in the 'action' category but shes amazing in that movie... no?

ok so I've never seen
ok so I've never seen GoldenEye but I do absolutely love me some Famke so for that idea alone I might sit through two hours of Pierce Brosnan. I do like Daniel Craig though so too bad Famke couldn't be in the newer Bond movies.
