On an Olivia cruise earlier this month, we grabbed a few minutes with Ellen DeGegeneres's mom Betty to ask her about Ellen's talk show, the infamous "puppy episode," and her work speaking to large corporations about gay rights.

Plus, Betty explains why she loves Will Smith and home improvement shows (even in France, I can't escape the power-drill talk!).
She Made Me Watch This! Betty DeGeneres
Check back next week in three weeks for a new episode of SMMWT!, and watch previous episodes here.

finally!! I love her!
I've been checking the site all day for this, I love betty degeneres, her book literally helped me come out to my parents! I tried to get my mum to read the book as well, but she just wouldn't do it. my parents are ok with me being gay, but they are not nearwhere proud. sadly, pflag doesn't exist here. Betty is amazing, a realy inspiration that parents can get around the idea of having a lgbt child.
great interview!
http://babydyke.blogspot.com/ - my take on all things lesbian
I <3 Betty!!!
OMG she is ADORABLE!!!!!!!!
I wish my mom was like her!
Give Betty her own vlog!
I would love to attend one of her speaking engagements some day...but in the meantime...how about Betty having her own vlog? :)
And on a side note, did Betty mention whether Ellen was aware of "AfterEllen" or not...and if yes, what she thought about this little place in the middle of the Internet...? :D
Re: Ellen
Thanks Sarah!
I hope Betty does check us out here! *waves to Betty*
I suspect the great relationship Betty and Ellen have has had a hand in my relationship with my mom because...
my mom loves Betty (and Ellen) and loves when Betty makes an appearance on Ellen's show.
I think one of the greatest trips my mom and I could take together would be to go out to California to a taping of Ellen's show.
Anyway, thanks Sarah for the response...and thanks interviewing Betty! :)
That was the finest interviewing job I have ever seen
Sara Warn, you have a gift for interviewing! Granted, you couldn't have had a finer subject.... who could beat Betty DeGenerous! But I must say, you did such a splendid job! Kudos..... too bad you couldn't have her come on regularly.... that was absolutely terrific! And Lori, I didn't mean to leave you out, you jumped in exactly when you needed to! PS> You have a beautiful smile.... I swear a close up would have revealed your eyes twinkling! And to think, you just added another avid reader! I bet once she checks out the site, she will love it just like we all do! Excellent! Thanks.
Great interview - Betty you
Great interview - Betty you are so interesting, and as was mentioned a great inspiration :) (and you are right - Will Smith is cool). Why do all the conversations on this show manage to drift into home improvements? It's obviously a focal point of the lesbian community....
And the road stretched on like an angry woman...
Great ep!
Great ep, as usual! And Betty DeGeneres is truly a remarkable woman. Thanks for sharing her unique perspective with all of us!
Anyone know when the You Can't Take Them Anywhere ep is going up?
ha ha
first, i love how betty is so dignified! i love the way she talks, the even tempo - there's just something that seems so graceful about it.
anyway, haha - it cracks me up how well behaved lori and sarah are...no slouching, hands on lap...lori! i caught you glance at sarah and miserably failed to hide your smile!
this interview was delightfully pleasant :)
PSthatsMe
love Betty
I've always loved Betty...she seems so sweet and genuine and just calming to be around. I love when there are glimpses of her on Ellen's show. She's got a good bit of humor too. It really is great, the relationship they have.
Thanks Sarah and Lori for bringing us this interview. Would love to see more with Betty, but it's so nice she took the time to talk with you. :)
I remember seeing Betty's self-portrait painting on Ellen's 'vlog' last summer and it was quite good.
i'm smiley..
betty seems really sweet. hope y'all had a great trip! welcome back :)
what a woman...
Wow, Ellen is a lucky one to have a mother like her...
She is so cosmopolitan
Lori and Sarah were simply wonderful as always.
Thought they were on a boat in france, but in the background i saw the streaming banner of germany. They have been in germany, too?
She seems so sweet
It´s great to see parents so involved in their kids lives (I know I´m grateful for that) regardless their age or anything.
Great to have you two back it was an awesome vlog.
betty!
I was so distracted by sarah and her glass of water, also the german flag was weird to see in the background of your vlog :-)
Betty seems like such a cool, laidback person. Sweet and supportive. She seems really nice and likeable!
Love, Ellen
After Ellen..came me!!
I have just bought Betty's book 'Love, Ellen' and it is wonderful. What an amazing woman. I love watching old episodes of 'Ellen' and seeing Betty as an extra in the background. I can still remember the night The Puppy Episode was shown in the UK on Channel 4 as part of the coming out night. They held a celebrity party for Ellen, and Betty was there too. I could listen to her talk for hours.
She and Ellen have touched so many peoples lives, including mine.
I second the Betty Vlog idea!
BAM FOREVER..
she is so smart and
she is so smart and sweet!
haha the german flag in the bg.. are you guys sure you went to france
~ Es kommt nicht darauf an wie gut man eine Sache kann, sondern wie gut man sie verkauft. ~
I love Betty!
She rocks!
Betty is such a great example for other parents how to deal with gay children. I think she's helped a lot of people. She's an amazing person! (as far as I know her of course, lol) How nice of her to an interview with you, loved it!! And Sarah, nobody saw the note you were holding, don't worry:p

Thanks Sarah and Lori
What a great interview,
Betty is so cool!
Thanks for this Sarah and Lori, it is so cool to see Betty talk!
I hope you had fun in Europe.
What other things we can see in the vlog
Hey great, there's a german flag in the backround! Not that I am so into this stuff, but I like the idea of finally having german issues on your blogs. Even if there are figuratively. You got british articles, you went to France (like you people visiting Paris and Lyon, and both are not very far away from Colone or Frankfurt. But if you ask me, I would definitely prefer to see you guys in Berlin...The greatest city ever. Really!)
:o)
Just an idea. Check on that.
Watching Betty...
...it's easy to see where Ellen gets her wit and intelligence from, but also her dignity and gentleness.
Betty obviously did a great job raising Ellen, and Ellen likewise did a great job helping her mom understand something that is often hard for parents to accept.
Like so many others in these comments, I have to say how much Betty's book helped me and my own mother through my coming out. My mother was a very proper and dignified southern lady, and she identified strongly with Betty Degeneres. I came out after moving north for college and my mother was convinced that the Yankees made me do it, so to speak.
When Betty's book came out and Mom learned that Ellen and Betty were from the south, just like us, that was the first thing that made her stop and question her thinking.
Betty's book helped her, and it helped me too--even though I was tempted to let my mother's hurtful words put even more distance between us, Ellen's part in Betty's story reminded me that I had a responsibility in the process too, and if I wanted to have an honest relationship with my mom I would have to hang in there through the hard times.
As it turned out, my mom died way too soon, and I'm glad that we never gave up on each other. I give the credit for that to Ellen and especially Betty.
(If my mom were here now, she would be reading her beloved People magazine and asking me, "So, when are you going to meet a girl who will buy you a ring like that?" Or, "You can get MARRIED now?" as she was dialing her florist.)
I hope Ellen and Betty know how very much they have helped so many of us just by sharing their experience with us, and continuing to do so.
Thanks Betty. For everything.
And thanks afterellen for bringing us such a great interview.
A very
beautiful post swack, it brought tears to my eyes. It made me think of my own mother and how very hard she is trying to understand and how very lucky I am to still have her. Thank you for your post.
I must agree, Betty is a wonderful woman who raised a wonderful daughter, together they have made such a difference in so many lives. I thank them both.
Best.Celebrity.Mom.Ever
Plain and simply: Betty rocks. If all moms were as cool, loving, caring and understanding as hers, equality for all would have been as automatic as breathing. She, and her daughter truly are inspirational.
I too have read her book. It helped me while I was struggling with a way to come out to my conservative catholic parents. It's a definite must read for anyone, but especially those struggling with family acceptance.
Thanks for the interview Sarah and Lori! It was great (and good to see you two again).
Any road is a good road when you don't know where you're going.
Sarah is so cute!
the little paper she is holding under the table. haha. oh, so cute.
Paint, Sarah, paint! You can do anything! hahaha
Lori
Betty DeGeneres is poise personified. Ellen is lucky to have a mom like her. This vlog is definitely special.
On a different note, I always wanted to write that Lori looks very composed and collective. She always stand out to me.
Betty DeGeneres...
Ellen is very fortunate to have such a wonderful woman like Betty DeGeneres for a mother... Betty has been such a wonderful supporter of the GLBT community over the years and so outspoken, it's really great to see her on After Ellen with you and Lori!
Between Betty DeGeneres and the recent BWB with Diane McManus... I think that After Ellen has introduced us to 2 of the coolest Moms around!
Having had the great pleasure of meeting Betty DeGeneres on two occasions myself, I found her to be such a wonderful, soft spoken, endearing women who after speaking to her for just a little bit you come to realize exactly how Ellen herself became the wonderfully endearing and funny woman so many of us have come to adore! Betty can definitely be proud in having done such a fine job raising Ellen and Ellen can be proud of having such a wonderful mother like Betty!
It was a pleasure tuning in to After Ellen today and getting to hear Sarah and Lori talk to Betty... you ladies did great! And if Betty comes to read After Ellen I hope that she comes away from it knowing how so many of us admire and respect her and her daughter and thank them both for the path they have helped to forge...

Gotta Love Betty!
Wow, thanks for having Betty on your vlog this week, she's so sweet, cute, and kind. Its nice to see that she's still out there making a difference in the world and hopefully other parents, grandparents, etc. follow her lead into COOLNESS!
Go Betty, Go!
Betty's so sweet, it's
Betty's so sweet, it's unbelievable. :) I only wish there were more people like her, especially where I come from. But hopefully, things will change with time.

Lori looks sort of like...
I was looking at this and I thought "Wow! In the screenshot/preview thingy, Lori sort of reminds me of Angela from Bones."
Which might be really random, but I see it sort of.
When does SMMWT come back?
"Check back next week in
"Check back
next weekin three weeks for a new episode of SMMWT!"Three weeks was Monday! Are we getting a new SMMWT soon?
Great!!
I liked that you show a mother point of view. Mrs DeGeneres is really encouraging and proud of her daughter. That's really good!!
But the thing is, why is the boat not moving and above all, why is there a german flag and not a french one since they are in france ?! ok, that's is not important questions ...
