This week Lori and I are all about reviewing the new movies — new in theaters, and new on DVD. From Ellen Page's fantastic turn in Juno and Keri Russell's yummy pies in Waitress, to Nicole Kidman's wasted efforts in The Golden Compass and the Tom Cruise and Meryl Streep talkfest Lions for Lambs, we show you scenes from the movies and give you our take on whether they're worth watching (don't worry, nothing too spoilery!).
And then there's Megan Fox's mechanically gifted girl-with-an-attitude character in Transformers, an entertaining action movie with surprisingly good female roles. A woman who can fix our car, battle killing machines, and look effortlessly beautiful, all at the same time? We're in! Due to the holidays, this the last video blog Lori and I are doing until January (which means no Who Thought THAT Was a Good Idea? on Monday, and no more She Made Me Watch This! this month). But we'll be back the first week in January with lots to discuss in both vlogs — including weekly analysis of the lesbian storyline on Cashmere Mafia. See you next year! the good and bad
You don't care about Iraq?
I was somewhat offended by Lori's comment that she found "Lions for Lambs" boring because she doesn't care about Iraq. Of course, you are entitled to your opinion, but this is why the war in Iraq is dragging on forever, because the majority of Americans don't care about the war. They don't even remember that we are at war unless they accidentally watch the news.
As a lesbian serving in the National Guard, I do care about the war; I want it to be over. I liked "Lions for Lambs" and did not find it boring at all. By the way, the soldiers in the movie were fighting in Afghanistan, not Iraq. They are not the same country.
I realize CGI special effects fantasy movies like "Transformers" are so much more interesting than boring reality like an ongoing war, but please, don't belittle movies that are trying to educate and inform Americans about a very real war that has killed over 3,000 Americans to date and hundreds of thousands of Afghans and Iraqis. Who knows how high the final death toll will be?
Sorry if I bored you.
I don't think that Lori said
So...
I found it amusingly ironic that the picture quality dimmed every time the "Brillant!" bunny was displayed. Heh.
Man. I'm probably out on a limb with the randomness of that one...
Oh! Oh. And equally amusing vlog! Heh.
I disagree...
Transformers=WORST. MOVIE. EVER. It was made for 15 year old geek boys. I stopped watching after the first hour. My sister watched the entire thing and said that it didn't get better. God awful. I need a shower just thinking about it.
Well I've always said...
Well I've always said that if you saw my room you'd think it belonged to a 15 yr old boy, so I guess the creators hit their target demographic with me cause I loved it. Mostly because it was a movie based on a show that I loved as a child and there where subtle things mixed into the film reminisant of the 80's cartoon. Like the fact that the voice of Optimus Prime (Peter Cullen) is the same guy who did it in the cartoon. Not to mention the trademark sound the robots made when they changed. It was great.
Okay yes I am a geek and love things that remind me of my childhood, but different strokes for different folkes I guess.

Me too, me too...
I'm a total geek too. I loved Transformers (the tv show and toys) as a kid and love nostalgia; however, that movie just hit me the wrong way.
I didn't know that about Peter Cullen. Cool fact.
Didn't like it either...
Transformers
Transformers had its ups and downs, but I definitely wouldn't say it was the worst movie ever. That's reserved for Notes On A Scandal. BLEH.
Anyway, it was really strange watching the movie in the theatres. I didn't get half the jokes in it because they were geared towards current teenagers. I lost count of how many times the kids in the theatre would bust out laughing about something and we were just clueless as to what the joke was.
I enjoyed the CGI and fight scenes the best -- I couldn't care less about the human characters in it. They were [snores] sooo boring.
The CGI was amazing and nearly flawless but the actors/actresses fell flat to me.

Notes on a Scandal...
was a brilliant movie! Cate Blanchett and Judi Dench are two actresses at the top of their game. It was not about lesbianism; it was about a lonely woman being an absolute creep. Sorry you didn't get that.
Movies, love your reviewin' of movies.
I really want to see Juno, but it is not in my area. It looks to be good, from the reviews(yours included of course) to the use of the word shenanigans. I love the word shenanigans. Okay, I just love the use of silly not often used words.
Transformers- I've said it before, Megan Fox's character surprised me. I was expecting her to be just eye candy, but she was as deep and functional as most of the other characters.
Enjoy your vacation, don't get too hammered New Year's eve.
"Bad jokes are us, ur me."
no more blogs! i'm sad.
Oh no more blogs for the year...what am i going to do now?
Lori, love the t-shirt, just my style and i've never commented on you guy's wardrobe before.
I so want to see juno.
I think Lions for Lambs is the kind of movie i would like to see because i too like to watch an interesting debate and maybe learn something but the fact that Tom Cruise is in this movie just kills it for me. For some reason after there was that whole Cruise-Shields thing about psychiatry and meds and katie Holmes i've gone off him/been freaked out by him and haven't wanted to see any movie his in, plus i don't get the whole his a hunk thing.
Transformers i would give a whatever bunny because i just couldn't seem to care. i don't think i watched the ending but i remember Megan Fox's character when she fixed the guys car. that was a nice, unexpected suprise for a mainstream movie. There was actually more to the hot girl than her looks and the dumb boyfriend.
Waitress- I didn't like Felicty but i LOVED this movie. I loved the character, she was so real and i loved how she was unapolagetic(sp) about not being happy about the baby considering her situation. It's sad Adrieene Shelly died. i didn't know that, she was talented.
well I haven't watched any of these..except..
I liked Transformers for the same reason I liked Mr. and Mrs. Smith--beautiful people, big guns and explosions. Personally, I wouldn't like being provoked to think about serious issues every single time I went to a movie. we shouldn't neglect the 15 year old geek boy within us. :)
yay, happy holidays to you both!
omg, inbd
As usual
As usual another enjoyable segment. My work week doesn't feel complete without my Friday afternoon fix. I suppose I will have to patiently wait till January.
I loved Waitress. I took my father to see it for Father's Day and it will mostly be one of his X-mas presents this year. I am totally going to go see Juno simply based on all the rave reviews I've been hearing from everyone. However I will most likely wait to see Golden Compass on video if not regular tv. As for Transformers, it rocked!!!! Megan Fox is freakin' hot and the fact that her character knew about cars added like 100 points to the hotness factor. Lions for Lambs I could care less about. In fact most of Robert Redford's movies as of late I could care less about. His films are like the opposite of Kevin Costner films, where one is long, good, but sometime boring the other is long, bad, and leaves you feeling like you could have had more fun doing your taxes.
Looking forward to seeing you in January. Happy Holidays Sarah and Lori.

I really wanted to see
I really wanted to see Waitress but the like one week it was on where I live I wasn’t able to go, grrrr!! And now I really want to see Juno, so I have my fingers crossed that a) it will appear here, and b) I will be able to see it when it is (hell, I’ll find some way to even if I can’t!).
Transformers I loved!! I went opened minded, I thought it would be absolutely awful or awesome, and I was pleasantly surprised to find it great fun and amusing. It did not take itself seriously, in fact it pretty much took the water out of itself, and it was great! I hate when films like that try to be too serious, they lose their appeal, but this didn’t. And I gotta agree that Megan Fox is GAWGEOUS! (she is the main reason I put up with watching Hope & Faith).
The Golden Compass absolutely devastated me. It was terrible!! I was so, so hyped for this film, loved the books, love Kidman and felt she was the perfect choice for the role, and I was just so looking forward to it, and it sucked massive balls! They stripped all the good material, dumbed it right down, but not even well enough to make it coherent, chopped the end of the book off (the best bit in fact). This movie should have been amazing, the material was all there, the cast was superb, and they blew it! Big time!! It makes me so sad :(.
Apologies for the uber-long post! Will miss you guys the next few weeks, but look forward to January! Love till then! xxx
Juno - Ellen Page
One of the movies I'm looking forward to see.. I did watch the trailer in another website months ago and I liked what I saw, I know that some movie trailers only show you the good parts and when you see the movie you feel robbed. But Ellen Page? what could go wrong? There is another movie that Ellen Page was on called American Crime, some true story about a girl that was tortured and murdered in the US, also stars Catherine Keener, great reviews in last Sundance, but it will be released in june 2008 and october 2008 in DVD.
The Golden Compass...hmm...I have an issue with talking animals, maybe that's why Narnia annoyed me a bit...
Ellen Page in "Hard Candy"...
I fell in love with Ellen Page after seeing her in "Hard Candy". Wow, what a performance. I haven't seen "Juno" yet because it hasn't made it to Cowtown, but when it does, I will be first in line. Ellen Page is a brilliant actress, and she's only 21. I can't wait to see what she does with her future acting career. I hope she has a good agent...
Yep
geekin out but I didn't see the Golden Compass....looked boring
As a fan of the cartoon Transformers, I didn't want to like this real deal bucks backed Transformers movie. Namely Michael Bay was making it and it was a live action movie revision of a cartoon. Cartoons made into movies are almost always notoriously bad for example Masters of the Universe, Scooby-Doo, Aeon Flux, and Josie and the Pussycats to name a few. But to my surprise, it was really good and my favorite mainstream movie of the year. I think the likeable cast made this movie more entertaining.
Waitress was also great. Just snarky enough to make ya smile. Shame Adrienne Shelly was killed before she could get the recognition she now obviously deserved. My only problem was the overdid-accents.
The movie I regret the most not seeing on a big screen this year was Paprika. Visually wonderful anime.
Sadly the biggest disappointment of 2007 was with Spiderman III. How was I supposed to take Spiderman seriously when Peter Parker/Spidey turns into the emo kid equivilent of dancing with the stars?
NO! NO! NO!!!!
I highly recommend I Am Legend
Just got back from seeing it, and it was surprisingly good. It's a little bit creepy, makes you jump a couple of times, makes you want to laugh and cry. This is an emotional roll-a-coaster, but in a good way. A bit slow in the beginning but you'll get over it. No lesbian goodness, in fact, barely a woman in site (lol) but still, it's pretty good.
You ladies gave good reviews. Now I'll actually consider seeing some of those since I'm very picky about what movies I watch.
Anywho, enjoy the holidays. I will. See you next year!!
Don't be a slave to the unavailable!Completely agree!
I completely agree I am Legend was really good!
I really liked Transformers, I wasn't a big fan of the portrayal of people of color in the film, but overall it was a really good film. I really can't wait to see both Juno and the Waitress. I'm going to try and see it during the holidays.
Juno does rock!
I guess all screenwriters now need to try being a stripper/blogger awhile so they can write a brilliant script like Juno. I hope Diablo Cody can keep the magic in her scripts!
I had the exact reaction as Lori. In fact, it was a packed screening where I saw it, and people were laughing so much you couldn't hear the next funny bit of dialogue. Juno better win some Oscars!
The Golden Compass
I really want to go see The Golden Compass now. Thanks for making it more appealing. Actually, I'll do what I always do and buy it on DVD...regardless...it looks GREAT!!!
OH and
The Night Watch would make a better film than Atonement
Having read Sarah Waters The Night Watch last Christmas, Atonement made me long for that book to be made into a movie. Any inside scoop on whether that will happen?
Atonement was beautifully filmed but had little sizzle, imho. Whereas The Night Watch did a phenomenonal job of really giving one the ability to visualize the London Blitz, as well as having interesting characters and relationships.
am i the only one who liked the golden compass?
no, the friend i took with me enjoyed it as well. we thought lyra was kick-ass awesome, and that her part was written extraordinarily well. my friend and i had only read the first thirty or so pages of the book (which I have to say is hard to read), but we were definitely drawn in to this movie and had been following the hype from the beginning. i guess visiting the movie's website helped us understand the world of the movie a little better. and i did care for the characters. the only bad part of the movie for me.. was the end credits song.
Juno is all kinds of awesome. Ellen Page (of X-Men 3 and amazzzing Hard Candy fame) is just perfect, and Jennifer Garner is heartbreaking.
I saw Waitress in theatres and cried. It was just lovely. It's the perfect blend of hopelessness and comedy.
Transformers was fun but completely cheesy. I agree with your "She's Hot" bunny, though, Lori. Because, damn.
And I didn't see Lions for Lambs because I read terrible reviews.
We'll miss you two! Happy New Year!
I have no idea for the life
I have no idea for the life of me how you guys could have been excited about seeing Because I Said So and not so excited about seeing Juno. After seeing that trailer it is RIGHT up my alley! I'm gonna see it as soon as I'm done with finals!
As for The Golden Compass, it seems everyone is disappointed in it and now that I know they tried to sanitize the religious aspects of the story I certainly won't be seeing it because that was the only thing that really intrigued me about it to begin with!
Lions for Lambs: Never really intrigued me but that was prolly because 1) I didn't know what it was about before watching this vlog, and 2) Tom Cruise has been really annoying to me recently so I really had no inclination to find out.
Transformers: I myself am not big into most smash 'em/bash 'em films (thanks Sarah!), but occasionally there is one that I like so I wasn't sure about this one. Shia Lebouf is a great young actor and a cutie to boot. I really enjoyed that scene you guys showed because the actress in it was also quite caliente. I kinda wanted to get into the mix with them, lol. I'm in a naughty mood, apparently.
Waitress: Another movie I wasn't sure about. I was a fan of Felicity back in the day so yay Keri Russell, but the previews I saw just left me not certain I wanted to see it. I actually was on a flight where it was playing but I didn't have earphones and was studying (read: intermittently sleeping on my book) so I only saw soundless bits that looked kind of painful from what I can remember. From you guys' description it kind of sounds like The Good Girl - that film a couple years back with Jennifer Aniston and Jake Gylenhaal, but seems like it ended on a less depressing note than that film did. Maybe I'll check it out.
Anyways, thanks for the reviews. As you can prolly tell I have not seen any of these films. I'm a law student: no time for fun things like movies (but plenty of time for internet procrastination, lol).
I can't wait
I want to see Juno,
can't wait to buy the waitress...I still have a huge crush on kerri russell
And i agree with Lori on Transformer...I was not expecting to love it as much as i did
I just hope the sequels are as good
Oh can't forget about the hottie Megan Fox
Golden Compass
I really don't like Nicole
I really don't like Nicole Kidman. I've never been able to explain why, but I just never liked her, and probably never will... And I don't really need to see the Golden Compass, but that's also because I've never heard of the books... Lori actually walked out?! I never do that. Guess I don't want to be rude, haha! Like who cares. Juno I'm totally going to see. I've hadn't heard about this coming to theatres, but all of a sudden AE was talking about it all the time, haha! You are good promoters, because now I totally want to see it! And with Lions to Lambs it's just too bad that I HAVE to see everything Meryl does, but if it was any other actress playing her part I would totally avoid it... And I seriously hate Tom Cruise, always have, so that makes it even worse that I actually have to see this...
I didn't know about Adrienne Shelly, that's so sad!:(

Juno...
Last night I went to see
Last night I went to see The Golden Compass and I was sooo disappointed. I read through the book last month so that I would have finished it in time for the film. Thank god I did because otherwise this film would have made NO sense! If you haven't read the book there is no way you should see the film lol. Nicole Kidman was great (I couldn't stop grinning every time she was on screen!)... I absolutely love slightly evil characters so I thought she was fantastic. They were overall just trying too hard to make the film look 'pretty' instead of trying harder with the storyline, I was pretty ticked off they rearranged the story too. "wait wasn't that ice bridge at the end of the story" "didn't they go to see the bears after they rescued the kids?" "why doesn't it show what Lyra is really supposed to take to Asriel..."
You also learn that the reason the film is called The Golden Compass and not Northern Lights, is because there's no mention at all of the Northern Lights!
So so so disappointed :(
Oh and Lori I love the t-shirt, you guys always have the best tee's!
Juno/Nicole/Compass etc.
I enjoyed your Movie Reviews
Sarah and Lori,
I enjoyed your movie reviews. I'm glad you explained what the Waitrress was about b/c I wasn't sure what it was about. I miss the Transformers in the theatres. I am a big fan of the 80s transformers (long time in the making for the movie) and transformers toys(which is not worth megabucks if you had a transformer from the 80s).The movie just pushed up the toys value. I will see it now since it is on DVD. The Golden Compass, I still want to see it b/c I want to judge for myself if the movie explained itself like the book. Then again, Hollywood doesn't do 100% good job doing a movie version of some books.
I'm gonna miss the reviews. Enjoy your Holidays and eggnogs!
I'm in Vibe this month...pick up a copy..check me out and then put it back on the stand. thanks.
peace imani (Imani Coppola's Black & White album from her mypsace page)
Juno
The many wonders of Juno
I've been a longtime lurker of afterellen, and I've just recently gotten a username, so I'm really excited that I'm leaving my first comment!
I thought your comments on Juno were spot on, and not only that but as a lesbian I didn't feel like I was missing out on the point or the huge in joke like in Knocked Up. As a teenage girl I loved the fact that I finally found a representation that deviated from the norm and made her more than a pretty face (which it is!).
I've wanted to see Waitress for a while, so I'll probably rent and/or buy it for my family for Christmas.
Oh and by the way, you guys have made me a tv addict, which is disconcerting because I'm more of a bibliophile...You turned me onto Bones and Pushing Daisies which I'll always be grateful for. Keep up the reviewing!

waitress
i loved this movie! it was so funny! i also thought of the dixie chicks while watching this!
....damn baby.... hahaha
Another great vlog!
More than meets th eye...
I love Transformers and I don't are if people make fun of me for it it amaz-zi-ing. Now where i'm a little upset about BumbleBee not being a Bug... i'm not terribly upset. I'm so used to my favorite books and TV shows being butchered in big Hollywood movies that transformers was a nice surprise. It worked well as an action movie, and really got the viewer engrossed in their reality which I liked.
Many of these drama movies, it takes so long for me to care about the character that I often get tired of watching. I have enough drama in my life, I work in therapy so I don't want to see a movie like the Waitress, I hear it daily. And instead of being there with the character, i'm thinking up safetly plans for implimentation with the character and if this character was in therapy with me how would I approach this case. Thus- Transformers being the movie for me
Waitress.... what a beautiful film.
Loved Transformers
I personally agree with u ladies about TRANSFORMERS! I dont remember ever watching the Cartoons But I really enjoyed the movie.
Think Negative.
Lori, I love you t-shirt and why is it that you always wear the coolest t-shirts?
I was already planning on seeing Juno but you two just made me want to see it even more. Ellen Page is a really good actress, have you seen Hard Candy? From the trailer her character sarcastic and cynical traits reminded me of her role in that movie.
Happy Holidays and a wonderful fulfilling new year :)
I second that
I heart Lori's t-shirt.
I am a Kidman fan, so I
I am a Kidman fan, so I think I will inevitably see the movie. Juno I will watch at a later date. I was never really a Felicity fan...so Kerri Russell is no drawing card for me. Instead, I might just watch Waitress because of its quirk.
Anywho, on to what I really want to comment about: Thanks to all of you who have made this site what it is (special thanks to Sarah, Lori, Terrible Three, and Hannifah), I have really enjoyed. All the best for the Season and the New Year!
Transformers
Well I can't speak to the other movies because I haven't seen them yet, but I did recently see Transformers.
Megan Fox's character was hot, but kind of fake. I don't know, she just bothered me at times. On the other hand, there was another hot actress in there that no one else seems to have mentioned...Rachel Taylor (the blond Australian girl who was good with computers). I liked her better, but I guess she was overlooked because she had such a small role.
Anyways, never really watched the cartoon, but the movie wasn't too bad. I enjoyed all the fighting and explosions, and I loved the fact that some of the transformers changed into cool cars. Yeah, I guess I'm like a 15 year old boy too.
no way...
I stil lcan't believe you two liked Transformers. Yes that chick is pretty hot and awesome (Hell, she can fix my car anytime!), but that movie was utter shite, waste of celluloid and yet another piece of evidence that the song from Team America is true and Michael Bay should finally be stopped from making movies......
yet another movie that screams "look at my awesome CGI"
*end rant*

i completely agree with you on this one
Comments
Have not seen any of the flicks yet but I appreciate the vlog and all the comments thereafter. Makes me want to see some of the movies I have not thought I wanted to see. Generally, I like waiting for DVD except for super special ones that I really want to see on the big screen.
I feel sorry about Adrienne Shelly. I remember when the murder took place and I had no idea who she was.
I liked transformers....with
