SHE MADE ME WATCH THIS! Fall '08 TV Review - Part 1

After a hectic summer schedule, Lori and I are back just in time to review the first week of the new fall shows, including: 90210 (The CW) and Raising the Bar (TNT), and returning favorites like Bones (Fox), America's Next Top Model (The CW), and Gossip Girl (The CW).

Plus, why parents should make their kids watch The Secret Life of the American Teenager (ABC Family), why Sarah likes Life (NBC), and why The Closer (TNT) is bugging Lori this season.

She Made Me Watch This! Fall TV Review Part 1

Check back next week for a new episode of SMMWT!, and watch previous episodes here.

    Finally!

I've been waiting for this all day. I must have refreshed the page about a thousand times. And this was great as always, I really missed this vlog.

I liked the GG episode, but I thought it would be more exciting. And I'm rooting for Chuck and Blair too.

Hmm.. Bones was... Ok, I guess. It just kinda dragged on. And on. And on. This show is just not built for two-hour episodes. Oh, and the Angela/Hodgins thing totally came flying out of nowhere. And I really missed Zach :(.

Anyway, I can't wait for Sarah Connor, How I Met Your Mother and Grey's Anatomy this season, and I'm looking forward for more SMMWT :).

Brilliant Bunny for Sarah and Lori!

Ladies how in the world do you find the time to watch all these shows? I’m addicted to TV as much as the next gal, but good lord. I will say I’m a bit disappointed that you two never cover the Law & Orders, specifically SVU and CI. I know Lori has mentioned several times that she doesn’t enjoy lawyer dramas, but what about you Sarah? And come on, how big of a subtext fan base do Olivia and Alex have? And they have a new girl coming on this season to take Casey’s spot, I can’t wait!

Now you ladies did mention a few shows that I enjoy, one of them being the Closer. My mother is a die-hard fan of that show, but I was having serious doubts at the beginning of the season. Was it just me or did those first few shows seem like they were dragging on? I was about to give up, then they had the one with the terrible Russian kid and I came back! And Sarah, what do you mean you don’t like Brenda’s parents? To me, they have always been one of the best parts. Remember the RV episode? Come on! The entire cast is brilliant on that show! In fact, I think it’s the only show on television that I can’t pick out a favorite character!

And ladies I know you are going to turn on me, but how in the heck could you get into 90210? Like Sarah, I grew up watching that show but I wasn’t happy about the remake! I’m a firm believer that 99.9% of the shows out there should never be touched again! Now a few could use rebirth or revitalizing, but not shows like this! Oh and Sarah, Mitzi Kapture went on to star in Baywatch and The Young and the Restless but she did kind of dwindle away after Silk Stalkings.

My last thing I wanted to do was sing praise to Lori! Now I’m 25 and I’m addicted to Gossip Girl, but you made an excellent point! I also think that parents should err on the side of caution with this show. So kudos goes to you for mentioning that! And I give both of you the Brilliant Bunny for your time and reviews. I look forward to your vlog so much. You guys are the best couple I don’t know!

    Firefly

Definetively watch Firefly, I liked it a lot, and I assume it'll help watching the Serenity movie if you watch the series first, I at least found it awesome. (Then again, it's Joss Whedon). Also, cant wait for Life and House to be back.
    Katherine's picture

    yayayay!!

You're back! Wearing purple! Like NYU colors! (um)

So basically I have no TV (except youtube :x) so I usually have no idea what you're talking about, but I like listening to you two talk. But crying lawyer? what?

Interestingly enough my friend was just watching samurai girl last night (concurrently with the vmas) and she said the plot was bad but there apparently was eye candy. I wouldn't know.

    welcome back yay!!

    omg, inbd

    YAY!!!!!

I'm so glad you're back, I've been completely lost without you two telling me what to watch. Now I'm feeling excited about the fall season too.

Oh, and I totally agree about Life. I just tuned in to see Sarah Shahi, not expecting much, but I ended up really liking the show.

I'm glad you two are back ^_^

You just have to watch Firefly, it's brilliant (but hey, Joss Whedon...what do you expect?)

I agree about Life, I ended up liking it a lot, much more than I expected (and not just because of Sarah Shahi, which presence, I admit, definitely helps :P)

I just saw the first two episodes of the new season of Bones, aww, I missed them ahah

    about the closeted guy in

about the closeted guy in raising the bar...

if it weren't the legal community it might be more unrealistic, but the legal community is very conservative and that makes me believe it, i am a member(NOT closeted) of the legal community myself and know of closeted people, even people in more liberal parts like in top law schools,

but i agree i did not like the show either, that guys long hair was also totally unrealistic, lawyers by and large are well groomed

    onemorehour's picture

    90210

i actually liked this show even though it was a bit cheesy. shenae grimes totally rips off spencer from south of nowhere! that was weird. i've been obsessed with spring awakening, so i also loved that they are doing that play at school. i hope adrianna is the gay one! she kinda reminds me of jemima rooper.
    Hannah's picture

    spring awakening

I just can't imagine a high school doing that show. Even more liberal communities would be a little hesitant with high school girls exposing their breast and songs like "Totally Fucked."

But yeah, it's an awesome musical.

    Did Sarah say...

... she'd watch a series about ninja monkeys?

    Enjoy! hehehehe...

    Silk Stalkings?! Wow. I

Silk Stalkings?! Wow. I havent thought about that show in a long time. I used to watch that with my mom, which was probably not a good idea considering I was about 7 or 8 when it aired. We watched it till its end in '99. It was never really the same without Chris and Rita. :(

I agree with Lori, Bones was great! I wasnt really expecting Angela and Hodgens to break up so soon. Im waiting for Angela's ex-gf too, but I like Hodgy. Oh well. London was a great place to film, though. Being in the lab all the time to me gets a bit old. Bones and Booth are best when out in the field.

Oh man! Im on the edge of my seat waiting for Life! I almost didnt watch it in the beginning but seeing Sarah Shahi certainly helped bring me back in. Thank god 'cause its a pretty awesome show.

Thanks Sarah and Lori for a great SMMWT! Glad to see you guys back. I missed the Happy Bunnies.

    so glad....

that ya'll are back on cause I really stopped watching tv. I cant wait for Life to come on. It is a good show. I got my brother hooked on it with only one episode.

90210 does look good and I watched it with the volume off. (I was doing stuff on the computer)

Serenity is freaking awesome. The movie rocked and the series is really good. The actors are great!

Lori... I thought you were about to tell us that Sarah would be on The L word but I could be wrong.. DONT PLAY WITH MY EMOTIONS WOMAN!!! Spill it if you know!

    Kinda like therapy..

Being in the UK, most of the time I have absolutely NO idea what you're talking about and yet I always tune in. I just sit here watching...wishing that one day (when I grow up..) I can be you! I also live in hope that one day you will point the camera out of the window..or somewhere interesting in New York so I can see what it's really like!

Hm. I think I suffer from US Sitcom Syndrome.

I still appreciate your insightful comments. I note them down, and then in 5 years time, when these programmes begin in the UK, I can contribute to the debate!

    Good to have you back!

I'm majorly under-excited about the coming season. Seeing the two of you back made me much much happier than I foresee any of coming shows doing! Yay for Sarah and Lori!

I'm so bored with all the CSIs, despite Liz Vassey and Emily Procter. And nothing of the new stuff interests me, too much teenagers and/or legal dramas. I might check out True Blood, but I'm not a big fan of Anna Paquin, though it does sound interesting.

I'll be glad to have the Sarah Connor Chronicles and 30 Rock back, but other than that I think I'll be spending a lot of time with my DVDs this winter. I just received Witchblade, Blood Ties, and Birds of Prey recently, and I'm thinking about starting over from the beginning with The X-Files and The West Wing, to have something to watch.

    kreigen's picture

    Scary...

My brother's name is only one letter difference from the actor playing Charlie (ff not fe) in Raising the Bar - and it's not the most common name ever...anyway...

Darn - you are two series ahead with ANTM. I'm taking it's space with Make me a supermodel and australia's next top model. :( I'm still waiting for the series before the one you are on! But twiggy will be gone...

I saw the promo advert for private practice (the 1st season...behind) and it seemed like canon clips of different women throwing themselves onto bemused men. It just screamed avoid.

    Anyway great vlog :)

The closer you get to the light, the greater your shadow becomes, but don't be afraid...

    American Teenager & Serenity

You really must watch Firefly to appreciate Serenity. The complete Firefly is only about $25 at iTunes. It's money well spent for any true Buffy the Vampire Slayer Joss Whedon fan.

I'm so glad to hear I'm not the only lesbian enjoying The Secret Life of the American Teenager. I only intended to tune in to see how Molly Ringwald looked these days, but I got instantly hooked. It's refreshing to see multi-dimensional Christian characters.

    SoundandFury's picture

    Secret Life...

Even though I thought the acting was awful, I like that the Christian girl wasn't a complete over the top loser (like they usually portray them). I also enjoyed that you two always called the the main character "the pregnant girl." :p

I just started watching the first episode of 'Secret Life...' on your recommendation (coz I do as I'm told) and oh my god!  It's the original Mini-Coop!!  Little Kaitlin Cooper is all grown up, and looks nothing like Willa Holland (who, coincidently, I hear is going to be on Gossip Girl this season).
    AMN's picture

    Welcome back!!

Mondays aren't as painful now that SMMWT has returned.  I've missed this vlog.  I don't watch 90% of the shows that are recapped, but I enjoy watching Lori and Sarah together.

I started watching Life, but I could not stand how the guy had the fruit fetish and insisted on eating as noisily as possible.  I think I made it to the third episode before deciding that I couldn't handle it anymore.  Is he still doing that??

I never was able to get into Bones because I'm not a fan of Kathy Reichs - who's books the Tempe character is based on.  I've always felt she was a rip off of Patricia Cornwell and really didn't like how she use French in her (earlier) books.  I may have to give it another shot though as I do like the two lead characters and the previews always look good.

Any road is a good road when you don't know where you're going.

    Happy Bunnies!!

Cutest. Couple. Ever. Sarah and Lori! I love your analytical approach to TV watching. It makes me feel less guilty 8).

I don't watch ANTM, but I do love Stacie's witty genius. I can't wait to read her recaps.

Lori, I am there with you about watching 90120 for the adults (loved Silk Stalkings, too!)

Sarah- "more teens on crack" - too funny!

    Finally, Bones!!

    "Beam up Fiercely!"

yayyy, even though I haven't managed to watch every SMMWT on the site (I am relatively new to AE) I'm still glad there's a new one because I feel more connected with the newer ones and for once I actually know one of the programs you're talking about (ANTM) which is usually the one thing which stops me enjoying the vlog fully usually

I think Tyra wasn't taking the robot thing seriously because of the few times she said "beam up fiercely!" for the cheesy teleportation bits, so that actually made me laugh quite a lot. I still cringed for most of it though.

Is it just me or is the vid acting a bit weird? I keep going back ('cus it annoys me if I miss a comment... tho its not nearly as difficult as it is to catch every comment made on WGN mind you), anyways when I go back it jumps a lot more than usual

also I was a wondering 'bout Veoh, 'cus when you said there was a problem with it and you weren't loading vid to Veoh anymore I thought it was a shame 'cus thats easiest for me with my dodgy net but I get why, but then it seems like you're still using Veoh in some form or another so I just wondered what the difference was between what you're doing and what you were doing before where we could download them?

    Secret Life..

I'm sorry, but Secret Life is one of the worse shows I have ever, ever, ever seen in my entire life. I'm guilty in being sucked in to watching the first few episodes but it's the worst written & worst acted show on tv. As someone who has a younger sibling, I much rather her watch Gossip Girl which at least presents its subject matter in such an over the top way that makes it less believable than a bunch of seemingly "normal" teenagers doing things that I definitely don't remember everyone doing at my high school. You know, I'm only five years removed from high school and I don't know if times have changed all that much (which I highly doubt) but this show is so completely ridiculous that I don't know who can actually relate to it. We definitely had pregnant girls and all that jazz but as for 15 year olds proposing to each other and everyone not thinking that's weird or for everyone other storyline that is completely blown to a level so far removed from reality... almost makes the show laughable.

I'm really confused about who Secret Life is targeting. I would hate for middle schoolers and even high schoolers to be watching it. My twenty something friends and I watched it and are taken aback by the subject matter and I can't imagine what a 13 year old thinks.

I'm sorry for the rant.. I'm just very passionate in my strong dislike for the show.

    Di's picture

    good to see you back

I haven't seen most of these shows, but it's nice to see you girls back. I may have to try some of them out....90210 maybe. I was a high schooler too with the originals and watched every week...until it got, just weird. Too many crazy storylines. But I should probably give this one a chance.

ANTM fascinates me. I've never watched a season beginning to end, but with the incentive of following along with Stacie's recaps, I will try this time around.

    I've been looking forward

I've been looking forward to this vlog since Friday!  When I've watched/read about tv shows in the past few months, I sometimes found myself thinking, 'I wonder what Sarah & Lori would think about that...'.  I'm really excited for the fall tv season to begin, and I even made my color-coded (by network) Excel spreadsheet to organize my viewing schedule!  Although, my DVD recorder picked last week (of all weeks!) to die so I've been in retro mode using a VCR since then.  Needless to say, I've already ordered a new recorder before we get very deep into the premiere season.  Chuck & Blair are my favorite on Gossip Girl too, and I really love the voiceovers (oh, do I miss Veronica Mars!).  In preparation for the new 90210 I watched the marathon that they had on Soapnet last Monday and I was on the edge of my seat, completely excited once Tuesday evening came.  I liked the new version (especially Silver & Tabitha) as well as the nods to history (Hannah Zuckerman-Vasquez doing the tv news and Ethan mentioning that she looks like she's almost 30!).  Even though theme songs tend to be short or non-existant these days, I was really looking forward to a full one for 90210, but I guess that's not going to happen (unless they just didn't put it in the pilot which is entirely possible).  In regards to Heroes, I wasn't that into it last season, but I might catch the premiere and then go from there.  I'm also thinking about giving Private Practice another shot.  I'm really psyched for Grey's Anatomy, Brothers & Sisters and 30 Rock.  I will also be watching Ugly Betty, Dirty Sexy Money, SCC and Desperate Housewives.  Oh, and it was so great to have Ellen back on with new episodes today!

Thanks again for the great vlog!

    Finally back

Yay you are back! How on Earth do you find the time to watch so many shows and still have a life? I swear I´ve tried but it´s one thing or the other.

Since the new season doesn´t start for me for another month or so I´m going to take into account all your comments and feedback on the shows. And Life´s first season just started last week (although I have already seen it) I was ecstatic when I saw it.

    jamlawgirl's picture

Great to have you guys back! But a (not so) tiny issue ...

You guys have turned me on to a number of cool TV shows and movies like Juno (thanks!) and even Cashmere Mafia which, though disappointing, gave me the pleasure of enjoying one Miss Lourdes Benedicto's hotness.

I'll prolly try to catch an online ep of Raising the Bar if I can find one because: 1) I'm almost a lawyer (1 yr to go!) so of course a legal drama entices me, 2) The 13 y.o. in me wants me to watch it for Mark-Paul Gosselaar who I had a HUGE crush on back in the day (I know; don't judge me), 3) I ADORE Jane Kaczmarek! She was amazing on Malcolm in the Middle.

I'll also try to catch American Teenager since it sounds good.

I REALLY want to see True Blood because I LOVE everything Alan Ball does and it sounds like it's going to be awesome! But alas, no HBO :(.

OK so i have to do just a little bit of a queer/pansexual rant; please forgive me. I really don't like when people make snide comments about someone choosing to say that they are attracted to the person, not the gender because, although I don't care enough to explain my sexuality in that much detail to most people, It's genuinely how I feel.

Although most people would call me bi based on my past relationships, i never use that word for myself because I hate the binariness of the word and I am attracted to all kinds of people including cis- and trangenered men and women and intersex individuals. I am also particularly attracted to very genderqueer  and genderf-cking people. So the reaction of both straight and lesbian/gay people whenever someone describes her/his sexuality that way (i.e. attraction to people regardless of  - or at least not primarily based on - gender) kind of irks me.

Sarah and Lori I love you, but just had to put it out there. Sorry for ranting.

    SNL's Back!

Good to see you both back vlogging again.

I think my enthusiasm about this fall season has really been tempered by the fact that there aren't that many new shows--in part because of last season's writers' strike. I'm ready to get back into my old favorites (Grey's Anatomy, Ugly Betty, Brothers & Sisters, etc.) and reacquaint myself with some of the new shows that I barely even got to know (Pushing Daisies, Life, Chuck, Private Practice).

As for 90210, I watched it for a little while but just wasn't that appealing to me. What I will say, though, is that my experience with Shenae Grimes, via Degrassi, is that she'll rise to the level of whatever material she's given. If the substance of her dialogue is mediocre, she'll be mediocre, but if she gets great material, she's got the ability to really awe audiences.

Like you both, I was a little perplexed by the futuristic start to ANTM--the props seemed liked something out of the old Batman series of the 1960s. It's hard to pick a favorite until the makeovers, but I like Sheena and Isis a lot, thus far. Maybe Clark's kiss this week with Elina will be the precursor for her departure as it was for Sarah when she kissed Kim Stolz in Cycle 6.

I'm looking forward to the season premiere of Saturday Night Live, which is this weekend--if only because everyone wants to know if Tina Fey will come back to play Sarah Palin in a sketch.

I really enjoyed the Bones premire.
But I acually didn't like the guy that kept asking Bones to sleep with her.

True blood was good, but the mortal/vamp sex creeped me out. Moonlight was cancled aswell? I heard blood ties was. Does this mean true blood will only last a year? Not enough vamp shows are lasting. I really enjoyed them too.

bones can go anywhere they like --

i love watching the vlog you have, although i live in England we dont get all the shows you talk about - or we are just a couple of seasons behind.. anyhoo i was wondering if anyone knew where i can catch this ABC (family) stuff .. there are no channels like that here and i searched around the internet and couldnt find much.. maybe im looking in the wrong place..

oh and also.. bones is incredible, didnt think that i would like it but i caters to all my drama / forensic needs.. im glad they went to london just shows that they are popular to go anywhere they like and have the funding for it and can still make a good episode, and american TV shows hardly travel over here.. funny that even tho it has been filmed a little in london us londoners wont actually see it until the season has finished in america!

for example when Reaper was on TV in america it missed a week of viewing? (or something close to that...) but anyway suddenly the brits caught up and we manged to get 1 ep ahead of america... i dunno why they released Reaper to us so early - maybe they wanted it to do well internationally as a TV program.. anyway so when the heads of the company found out we were catching up on episodes.. they stopped playing it for a couple of weeks here in london so that america could finish the season and they pass it bk to us??!?! i never understood that.. ( i hope everybody else understood that aswell.. i tend to ramble .. )

thanks for the update of all the new TV shows - even tho im gunna have to wait ooh i say around 1 yr max to watch all this stuff WE DIDNT EVEN GET 90210 THE ORINGIAL SERIES HERE IN LONDON hah we will never get the new one?!?! oh well

    I <3 Ninja Monkeys.

It is great to have you two and the bunnies back!

I will miss Moonlight and so will my niece.  We both feel we were robbed and don't understand why they didn't bring the show back.

I cannot wait for Life to return...I love the non-sexual chemistry between the unlikely partners and cannot wait to see what is next regarding the murder he was framed for...considering he found out that her estranged retired cop dad is somehow involved.

Raising The Bar wasn't to my taste either and I usually love law shows.  It was too bland and gave me no reason to care about any one of the characters.

You are right about The Closer...there were just a couple of good episodes this season and I want to know the details of the break-up too!

Gossip Girl doesn't do it for me at all and it is not because of a generation gap.

And I am trying to stay with 90210 and give it a chance...it just might be worth watching...I am hoping so because of the very promisng cast.

I love Bones....and I am looking forward to part of Grey's anyway.  lol

    Life

Thank you for plugging Life! That was the best new show last season. I only watched it in the beginning for Sarah but to my utter delight, the show turned out so much better than what the promos have been saying. It's just not another procedural show. Damian and Sarah are great together and kudos to the writing team for a brilliant first season. Here's hoping there won't be any sophomore slump for this show.
