In the middle of a loud New York thunderstorm, Dee (one half of Come With Me if You Want to Live) joins Lori and me in reviewing the debuts of Gimme Sugar (Logo) and In Plain Sight (USA), and the new seasons of Army Wives (Lifetime) and My Boys (TBS). When we're not trying to find something nice to say about Gimme Sugar, we applaud the use of Native American actors on In Plain Sight, the last-minute twist on the second-season opener of Army Wives, and the fact that My Boys' PJ is not a lesbian. Along the way, we raise questions like, is America over reality TV? Do I know way too much random trivia about Mary McCormack? Will Dee ever get a word in edgewise?
We also discuss what we've been doing so far on our summer vacation; what a reality series of our lives would look like; and which dogs are the most dangerous (hint: it's not the ones you think!). She Made Me Watch This! 2008 Summer TV Debuts
Let us know what you think of these shows, and what a reality show about your life would look like, in the comments! Watch previous episodes of She Made Me Watch This!, and check back next Monday for a new episode. Submitted by on June 16, 2008 - 8:40am. |

A reality show about my life?
Hmm.. I guess it's gonna be a story about a lesbian teenager who skipped highschool so that she can do something that she loves, traveling, and then struggling alone with her sexuality cuz she's afraid her Southeast Asian family and friends aren't gonna take it well (and then turns out that her mom takes it really well),
and then she decided to flew to the, so far, gayest country in North America, alone, for college , at the age of 16. Met some crazy people, a whole lot of wonderful, life-changing people, and learned to look back and realize that the worst thing that has happened could actually be the greatest thing that has ever happened to you.
And that you dont always have to fill your schedule with 'partying, clubbing, and more drinking' when you're a teenager. Just try to have at least one meaningful purpose in your life, ya know? lol
Thanks Sarah and Lori for being such a positive inspiration! :) You guys rock!
Gimme Sugar: See, this is why I only watch reality shows on TLC. Jon&Kate Plus 8, Little People in Big World, and you can actually learn how to wear animal prints properly from 'What Not To Wear'!!
Reality Shows
Awesome vlog. Love me some Dee, Lori and Sarah :D
I think if I had any kind of reality show, it would be about highschool band camp. It's awesome because music = life and entertaining enough for tv. With all the hookups, fights, and drama that goes on in the band who wouldn't watch it?
SMMWT - Dee
Awesome vlog!! Great to see Dee again, I have missed seeing you on "Come With Me..."
Anyway, have a great summer here in NY.
Best,
t.r.
quick rant
I shouldn't really complain about Gimme Sugar, since I know myself and I know I'm going to end up watching every single episode even if I hate them all (being all cute doesn't really save them). However, I really don't like how they portray young women: we early 20-somethings do party around a lot, but we also study and know enough about the world and have enough common sense to know that a bake sale or carwash WILL NOT be enough for making an important investment!! We also read enough so that when we talk we don't make up words. Also many of us may not necessarily believe in relationships but that doesn't mean we cheat and disrespect others 24/7... good thing is that, like Sarah said, the negative aspects of the show don't derive from the fact that these girls are gay, but from the fact that they're just stupid.
Gimmie sugar; lez party? I say lez not
I am turning 20 thursday, and I love going out to clubs getting drunk and acting crazy, but I don´t need everyone else to see me, I don´t need to audition to pretend I have that kind of life style. Gimme sugar is so scripted! Alex is attractive but I turned it off after 5 minutes because I couldn´t take much more, these girls are told to act like they don't have a clue, they are all portraying lesbian stereotypes anyway. However, here it comes, I do like Tila Tequila, because the first season, I thought it was great there was a bisexual "reality" show, I watch it because she's so dumb, and me and my friends love to make fun of her, and Brandi of season 1 was stunning!! Tila is trash, Gimmie sugar can't be compared to tila i think because you know Tila is a myspace sl*t, you know it is trash, but gimmie sugar is trying to be something so new and oh so creative and they are just not, I can't understand how anyone can watch this. Tila may portray a bad image of bisexuals but her show is entertaining, I don't wanna see 5 not that attractive girls sitting around talking nonesense also reality shows are kinda over now. bring back the drama series!
and if you would make a reality show of my life? err.. it would be me and my friends trying to shoot a very low budget film this summer, and how i would try to pursue a career in film making this year.. nothing interesting. Right now its 2 weeks behind my laptop working my ass off to graduate.... fun
Mary McCormack Trivia
Damnit! I totally knew that, too!
I totally knew it was K Street, but I mixed it up with K-Ville because I just watched the latter on iTunes. :) Thanks for catching it!
SMMWT is back! Yay!
And, Dee is guest starring! Double yay!!
I only watched a few minutes of Gimme Sugar before I gave up. I don't mind scripted 'reality' tv, so long as the acting and the premise are good. Otherwise, why bother? Just because a show has lesbians doesn't make it worth my time.
I hope the weather calms down for you. We've had thunderstorms off and on all afternoon here in Florida.
:-)
.."holy snikey's!!" is that
no sugar please!
as an asian-american, i was cringing throughout the entire episode of Gimme Sugar, especially everytime Bathilda came on. gotta agree with you guys, it was pretty bad!
DDDDEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!!!!
WOW she is just the cutest! the dimple! the smile! the hair! the voice! *SIGHS*
OH and the cherry on top.......she's SMART!
(yeah uhm Dee... Call me...)
...are you ready for a sugar rush?
Finally!!
I'm so excited that SMMWT is back. It is definitely my favourite vlog (by a thrice split hair) and I was going through serious withdrawal without it.
I loved the review of Gimme Sugar - Dee's eye roll captured my thoughts perfectly. The other shows sound pretty good (especially My Boys), but only The Closer is available in Canada (or at least that I know of). I'll just have to add them to my "To Be Rented" list.
If my life was ever turned into a reality show, it would probably be "A Day in the Life of an Obsessive-Complusive" - the date on the calendar may change, but every day is the same as before. It's really the perfect show though as you could miss months of episodes and still know exactly what's going on. On second though, maybe it should be called "How to Make Watching Paint Dry Seem Exciting". :S
It was great to see Dee, however now I'm missing CWMIYWTL. Awesome to have the vlog back. Now I can have my Monday evening fix again (seriously, the absence really threw off my routine). : )
Any road is a good road when you don't know where you're going.
Afterthough
The thunder in the background during the discussion of Gimme Sugar was perfect. It was as though all the gods were combining to voice their displeasure of the show.
Any road is a good road when you don't know where you're going.
Glad You're Back
Good to be back!
It's great being back. We loved having Dee on the vlog. Next time, we promise to let her talk more (yes, that means she'll be back sometime soon!). I might have to use more than Rockband to get her back as a guestbian. Perhaps Connecticut Sun gear?
I wonder if I'm the only one
Powers combine
SMMWT + Come With Me If You Want To LIVE = She Made Me Want To Live
Little chessy Comment I know
I loved the Vlog. Dee you have not seen the Closer? What? Forgot you are school, so I'll give you a break. Gimme Sugar was definite WTF! I try to be positive, and Sarah is right it ok. I probably would not watch actual show; I would just look into show'sreviews curious if the show will survive.
Dee awesome Guestbian! Yeah!
Lori curious what your shirt said just catch my attention it said something about Identity theft. I deal with that often at work (loan officer or whatever you call).
Dee great I idea with the dance, if you got the ladies from Getting Nowhere + Bridget+Come with Me If You Want To Life+ Bridget = get soul train train line with music from the 70's, 80's, and 90's that would be funny. I know it is impossible or crazy idea. If it was possible Lori and Sarah judge of dance moves, everyone else on their own team. Just kidding!
Kenneth Cole Awearness Tees
I was wearing Kenneth Cole's "Who Cares About Identity Theft? - K****** C***"
I picked it up in Vegas at a Kenneth Cole store. But you can also find it and other tees at http://www.kennethcole.com/awearness/

Reality Shows
I really did like some of the early seasons of the Real World. But now I think pretty much anyone who goes on a reality show is too aware of what they're doing and the result is really bad acting. Ironically, it's the celebrity reality shows that seem more organic...like My Life on the D List and the Osbournes. Maybe it's because they're used to the cameras.
I'm a webmaster, so yeah my reality show would be me at the computer most of the time. Sadly, I even have a mini bike and some hand weights by my desk so I can excercise without getting up.
Although, ages 17 through 20 would've made a good reality show. Up until 17 I was a total nerd, a shy nerd actually. Then I came out and went through some lesbian adolescence. I cut off all my hair and dyed what was left of it various colors. I worked three part-time jobs and I was a musician. I kept falling for straight girls who led me on. For some reason I attracted straight girls and simultaneously repelled lesbian and bisexual women. In between all that I still had time to party at least three times a week.
One party I saw two naked girls in a bathtub full of jello who said they were filming it for a class project. Another I almost slept with a hippy guy that looked like Jesus, but I was so drunk I puked (or I was so gay I puked) when he took his shirt off. I was dropped down a flight of stairs when my friends tried to carry me to bed after passing out. I woke up with three dogs. A cop caught me parking in a car with a girl and was so flustered he just left without noticing I was 18 and hiding a beer in my pants. I went home at 3am and surprised my Mom who was still awake and convinced her the whore red lipstick (not mine) all over my face was actually a rash.
Uhmm...this is probably the reality show no one wants to see actually.
Welcome Back
I missed your vlog keep them coming on more of a regular basis?? I hope.
I like how you add extra stuff on such as what else Mary Mc been in etc. I too love In Plain Sight, not so sure about the title but do love her and her character. Its so awesome to see Mature Women getting better television roles. We need to thank The Closer for that happening. And like you had mentioned she's not A STICK but definately healthy , fit and great writing to her skills. Lets hope for more shows like that.
Maybe Sara and Lori could do some kind of show while attending a WNBA game just sayin, like interviewing one or two or more of the players...that would be way kewl since I don't get to the games as I'd like. Sue Bird, etc etc...would be way AWESOME.
Be looking forward to more great shows.
Cool Tee
Kenneth Cole is a cool designer contributing back to the people. It sad it is happening more often. Other things in place trying to stop that. I guess if you gonna wear something expensive and nice at least it comes with a good message.
Love the Dynamic Duo - LORAH
Like the lesbian version of Bradgelina. Well, with all the charity work and adoptions some might contest that Brangelia are card carrying lesbians in their own right.
But I digress. What I wanted to say was that I really appreciate how, when discussing shows, Lori and Sarah delve into issues like the cultural context or any potential impact to the lesbian community. They always bring it back to a place beyond the purely superficial in a way that many TV and online shows (from other sites) don't approach.

OMFG Gimme Shoogah.
My girlfriend watched it tonight, and by default, i watched it as well. We both said it was horrible. Personally, I wanted to claw my fucking eyes out. It was a feux reality show?? WTF do we need that for?Ugh. Horrid.
I got a dick like a mule...with a big dick.
"Bath is her name"
Best quote ever lol
I think Gimme Sugar is just a perfect guilty pleasure show... as Sarah said it has its target, and i'm not really the target. I'm sure young lesbians are gonna love it and i would understand. The only problem is that apart from Charlene, they are pretty dumb... and over the top. They are a total cliché.
As for me, the show just makes me laugh and i'm totally shocked at all the drama for NOTHING... i mean, look at my avatar, that's why i chose that one :P
I haven't seen the other shows yet though, but i will :)
I Loved Mary McCormack since PRIVATE PARTS
She made that movie work. She managed to make Howard Stern Look better by giving an amazing and believable performance.
I liked the attempts at defending GIMME SUGAR. Unfortunately the straight reality shows that are comparable, have the bad acting that gives away that its scripted, but have way better scripts.
I think Kim Delany looks a thousand times better than a few short years ago on the O.C.
MY reality show would be called, "Really? That's it?"
I was actually thinking about this the other day...
You could do a vlog about fictional AE readers who interact with one another and with the vloggers on-line. It could even have a You've Got Mail (hugs and kisses to Meg Ryan) twist.
Really though, I think it would be fun to do a show about all the random things that happen on this site like fights over forum topics, or people posting rude comments and getting called out for it, or lesbians making mockable fan videos with sappy sound tracks for the AE Vloggers.
Anyway, that would be my unrealistic reality show.

YAY
glad to see you back and YAAAAY for Dee!
this vlog makes me feel like watching In Plain Sight, I'll try to find it somewhere
btw, a reality show about my life would look like Brunch with Bridget but all in french, and that doesn't mean that I spend my life in bed lol
Good Try
Sarah,
It was actually entertaining to watch you try to find SOMETHING good to say about 'Gimme Sugar'. Clearly, I am not the target audience for the show, but I still want to thank Dee, Lori, and you for saving me 22 minutes confirming that.
Hooray for Summer Show Returns
So glad you are back and great Guestbian in Dee! She rocks!
I am looking forward to the Army Wives arc with Renee O'Connor. Where is she already?
Can't wait for The Closer and my other favorite Saving Grace. Do you ladies like that one too???
It's gonna be a great July...
The 4th is on a Friday this year, "Burn Notice" premieres July 10th at 10 p.m. on USA, "The Closer" premieres July 14th at 9 p.m. on TNT, and "The X-Files" movie premieres on Friday, July 25th. Is it gonna be a hot summer, or what?
glad to see you two back
glad to see you two back and with dee!! yay!! oh and this vlog made me miss thunderstorms!!
the point that de made about straight tomboys is soo true!! i also find that more apparent now that more and more women in the media have to be super femme. like, can't a straight girls wear a comfortable shoe anymore?
thanks for the reviews. the way you guys describe gimme sugar sounds exactly what i thought it would be. the asian stereotype thing, ouch!! hehe... extra kudos for being honest on a logo show!
GREAT VLOG
Finally
my favourite vlog is back!!
Good to see you guys again, you have been truly missed:)
And nice addition with Dee, she seems like such a sweetie!
Yay!
TRIVIA: Link from "Burn Notice" to AE
Great to see you back.
Thought I would toss some trivia at you.
Dee is so cute! I love how
Dee is so cute! I love how she kept looking over her shoulders to her left and right when Lori and Sarah were discussing the movies. She looked a little left out or confused at the beginning, not knowing how to cut in or something. Keep doing that Dee, you're cute when you look shy or something.
Totally agree about Gimme Sugar! First episode was cool, but the second OMG! I'm not gonna even start about that one.
~confusedN~
Bunnies are back Yay!!!
Yay I am glad this vlog is back. I love seeing what Lori and Sarah have to say about what is going in the world. And Dee it was nice to see her there too. Dee you are missed. I hope to get to hangout with you again. It was a blast at SON conference last year. I love Army wives,I agree about Roxie being winey. I wanted to say stop it.lol In Plain sight is awesome too, love Mary McCormick. She was great in Mystery Alaska. The Closer is one of the best shows out there. Kira is an amazing actress. Everyone on that show is great. I am going steer away from Gimme Sugar. I like some reality shows, like Top Chef,Project Runway,Shear Genius and workout. But Tila really has to go. I love the bunnies, they are great. I wish I had some.
I look forward to another great episode soon. NYC rocks.
Dee has my
Dee has my heart, whether she wants it or not I will leave to my imagination. (chuckles) I'm just offering up the possibility, if she is so inclined.
As for "Gimme Sugar," my only issue with this show actually ties in with the L word. It seems as if LA lesbians and bisexual women will be forever connoted with this perpetuating stereotype that is SHANE. I will never understand why anyone would aspire to look, act and go about their decision -making based solely on this myth. Seriously, who can keep up with that lifestyle, irregardless of whether you are gay or straight? Maybe I'm too out of the loop, but is it at all attractive to be this "player"? I thought this question has already been answered, but with all this popularity of partying and making out/sex (and supposedly still keeping one's job), I have no idea.
