SHE MADE ME WATCH THIS! 2008 Summer Movie Preview

What do Will Smith, Meryl Streep, Gillian Anderson, Steve Carrell, Cate Blanchett, and the young girl from Akele and the Bee have in common? They're all starring in movies we want to see this summer. (Archeology! Singing! Football! Not all in the same movie, fortunately.)

In this episode of SMMWT!, Lori and I discuss which movies coming out this summer we really want to see — and which ones we definitely don't. (One word: Baghead. Yes, that's right, it's a movie about a guy wearing a paper bag over his head. 'Nuff said.)

As you can tell by my voice and vague resemblance to road kill, I'm still recovering from the cold I got at Dinah, so please bear with me if I seem a little low-key. I'll be back up to full-speed soon, so enjoy my slower pace while it lasts (I know Lori is!).

    I'm looking forward to...

Doomsday.. for one reason Rhona Mitra

    Wanted, just for Ms McManus

    Death Note

    The Dark Knight

    Forgetting Sarah Marshall

    Made Of Honour

    Prince Caspian

I think there is more, but i can't think of any....hmmmm

and i agree, great way to start this week <3 it

    rachelsluv's picture

    Rhona Mitra

Ahhh I'll never forget her appearances on Nip/Tuck in Season 3 the best season so far.

    Forgetting Sarah Marshall

I'm totally looking forward to seeing that movie. The cast is fantastic and, of course, Jason Segel is awesome. He's so awkward but it's funny and not embarrassing. If anyone watches "How I Met Your Mother" then you'll know.

The ads for this movie are great too. The ones here in Toronto, on the TTC, are really intriguing. It catches your attention since you don't know what the heck it actually is.

    Doomsday

Totally agree about Doomsday. It's already out and I'm surprised it didn't get any coverage on afterellen unless I missed it.

Woman in charge, woman with guns, woman hot and sweaty, action woman. What's not to like?

I Heart you for those pictures

i do, i really heart you for those pictures, i LOVE Rhona Mitra, BEST.LARA.CROFT.EVER!

    <3

I'm so excited about this film, i just saw shooter and it was AMAZING, i heart her.

    Rhona Pics

Seriously, you're awesome Zefbot!!! I developed a HUGE crush on her while she was on Boston Legal and then she moved to Nip/Tuck where she was also awesome, but then she kinda disappeared. YAY! I'm definitely gonna go see this, I just really hope she keeps her Brit accent, because I've seen a couple where she tries an American one (like in Shooter and that one with Jesus in it) and it definitely deminishes her hotness! Rhona Mitra kicking A**, oh I seriously cant wait to see this!!!!

Sarah and Lori that was amazing as ever, you are endlessly entertaining and super cute.

    the dark knight

i can hardly wait for the Dark Knight.  i didn't like the batman movies until Christian Bale was batman.  And I agree with Lori, I didn't enjoy Katie Holmes in the first one.....but thankfully, Tom Cruise wouldn't let her be in the second one...so she's been replaced by Maggie Gyllenhaal.
    Batman's picture

    thank god!

and what a good replacement that is!  love Maggie.

    Another big screen DRY SPELL!!

Sadly, the summer 2008 movie selection is as old and tired as the 2007 lineup (or lack thereof!). Can't Hollywood come up with anything better than remaking Indiana Jones and other silly action-for-the-sake-of-action movies and provide us with some compelling, thought-provoking, intelligent storytelling??? We're living in a vacuum here folks -- even my Netflix queue is drying up!!!

Even sadder is the fact that, given the chance, I can't even go to the same movies with Lori since I can't relate to the superhero silliness. Is it too much to ask for something of substance that talks about living in the here and now, and is perhaps infused with a bit of humor or pathos???

Geesh...okay, off my soapbox now! Always good to see Sarah and Lori, even if they don't bring good news on the movie front...

    rachelsluv's picture

    Living in a Dry Spell?

In 2007 the best performance I have seen in ages was provided by Marion Cotillard as Edith Piaf in La Vie En Rose. Of course it was a foreign movie so naturally Hollywood worked overtime to promote Juno which was totally unrealistic (even by Hollywood's Standards) I mean as if some 16 yead old is that insightful glib and articulate. Bleeech.
    drella's picture

    I'm looking forward to

Baby Mama with Tina Fey :D

and of course The X Files 2 and I want to see the SATC movie.

those are the only movies I'm looking forward to

Good that you're back again :)

    Sothavy's picture

Can't wait 'til Get Smart comes out

Anne Hathaway *drools* and Steve Carell seem like an odd pairing, but I'm sure it will be funny. Plus, The Rock is going to be in it too. He's my fav.

P.S. I love the "Indignant Bunny" shirt Lori!

If I ever start to think straight, this heart will start a riot in me.

    azngirl714's picture

    wow Sarah...

first it was your mom bashing cocky with a shovel...

now it's you wanting to shoot a bird with a gun =/

what's with this familial animal/bird hating thing? haha

anywho..I totally agree with you on the whole marvel superhero crap. We need something new.

And I'm excited to see Wanted and the one pant that miraculously fits everyone in every shape and size with Blake Lively in it.

    awesome smmwt!

Great SMMWT! Since I work at a movie theater I'm probably going to watch all of the movies you mentioned (if they play them here...). But I'm really looking forward to:

    -Wanted (Bridget McManus YAY!)
    -Kung Fu Panda
-Sex and the City - The Movie
    -Mamma Mia!
    -Star Wars: The Clone Wars

Yea, those are my highlights for this summer :)

PS: I hope your cold gets better soon Sarah!

    Summer movies

I'll take Lori's awesome list, and add one more. Wall-E. From Pixar. June 27th. Hopefully it'll be June 27th here too, though I have vowed to hop on as many planes as it takes to get from Dublin to a Wall-E showing theatre anywhere, even that theatre in Niagara Wisconsin...
    Beebs_4's picture

I soo want to see Wall-E

I soo want to see Wall-E too! I saw the trailers and it looks soo cute!

    Good summer for movies. ;D

The Strangers - based off a true story.
    Quaratine.

Others are Where in the World Is Osama Bin Laden?(By Morgan Spurlock who did Supersize Me.), Wanted, Ironman, Eagle Eye, The Dark Knight&Righteous Kill. Oh, and Saw 5 in October. :)

I was happily surprised by a small amount of lesbianism in 88 minutes. Yum.

    panacirema's picture

    my list

I am looking forward to, first and foremost, $10 movie ticket prices back in California. New York is ridiculous yo.

Anyway, I want to see Indiana Jones, Get Smart, Dark Knight (Heath Ledger :(), maybe Narnia (though I liked the books way more, but this tends to be true for most movie adaptations of books I watch), and maybe Wanted... and the rest you mentioned I might watch on DVD or illegally online. I mean, what?

Oh and by the way, the Christian reference in Narnia doesn't bother me at all, really. I used to joke that I went by "WWAD" (What Would Aslan Do). He seems nicer anyway (and he's a big furry lion!), if you're white and descendants of Adam and Eve. er..

And when you were talking about Baghead it reminded me of the scary boy with a sack over his head in The Orphanage . I shudder.

But, uh... Lori, you really want to see Ironman? :P When the previews came up in Resident Evil and Ironman was speeding away in the sky or whatever (which is physically impossible! I know it's cinema but ahh!!) and his voiceover was like "I AM IRONMAN" my friends and I burst out laughing. But it's okay! I don't judge!

Hope you feel better soon, Sarah! I am actually just getting over a cold myself...right in time to work on final papers. whee.

    omg, inbd

    bittybuffy's picture

    The Orphanage

I thought the same thing when Sarah mentioned Baghead. That was possibly the most terrifying film I have ever seen. A kid with a bag on his head doesn't sound scary, but I have nightmares.
I'm looking forward to Wanted, Smart People and Baby Mama. Nothing else is really appealing to me. I'm with Sarah on the new Hulk thing, really they got it SO very wrong last time why not just leave it alone?
    panacirema's picture

    are you kidding??

I think a kid with a bag on his head is a super frightening thing, lol. Or maybe it was like his behavior and the whole atmosphere coupled with the sack over head thing... and the face sewed onto the sack. yeahhhh okay. -_- good movie though.

    omg, inbd

    Batman's picture

    Katherine!!!!

I know every comic and superhero fan went crazy when they heard ozzys "I am Ironman"  I got chills...and I'm not a big Ironman fan, but you have to be a huge fan of comics to understand.

I'm looking forward... To the X-Files mostly, i've been thru the nine season again lately, and it doesn't get any better than Gillian Anderson! I don't know when it's out in Europe, i hope we won't have to wait for too long. I'm fairly excited about the indiana jones movie, i loved them as a kid, but i'm wondering about Harrison Ford too, he seemed old to me in the last one (i was 8 or 9 at the time). I've just check for the date it comes out here in France and apparently it's 21st of may... how comes it's sooner than for you guys? Or maybe i got that wrong :-p And sex and the city just for the fun ;-) Otherwise, i don't know if that matches the US releases but, things i'd like to see thru the summer: -"Annie leibovitz: life thru a lens" -"than she found me" Helen Hunt's first movie, haven't seen anything of it yet, i'm just curious about her work. -"Kit Kittredge : An American Girl Mystery" just because Patricia Rozema is directing it, and "when night is falling" is one of my favorit movie.

Ohh, I love Journey to the Center of the Earth!  I'm not really excited about the remake though.  Most likely will be waiting for it to release on DVD.  I mean, it's not Journey to the Center of the Earth without the accordeon-playing and bagpipe corneyness.

And The Day the Earth Stood Still comes out later this year too.  Woot.

Prince Caspian, in my opinion, is the best of the books.  It's much darker than The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe. That's my summer must-see that I'll be in the theatres for definitely.

I remember LOVING the book--I don't know if I can stand seeing a movie version (never saw the first movie). What if they mess it up? Oh well, I'll have to take a chance.

And I totally agree about Prince Caspian--why weren't all the other books written like that one?

    Quarterback Princess a True Story..

The character played by Helen Hunt in Quarterback Princess WAS based on a true story - but she was of course playing High School football, not Pop Warner... It took place in McMinville, Oregon.  Just thought our sports movie fan would like to know....

    Hmmm

I think if I had to choose, I would rather go see Lori's list than Sarah's. Well, apart from Indiana Jones, and Ironman. The latter just seems boring and dumb.

Loved the graphs, Lori. Good to see they're back.

    Speed Buggy!

For those of you that don't know the awesomness of Speed Buggy http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jGSkVqpVYpM there you go.

When I was younger my mom had old tapes of it and no one my age had any idea what I was talking about! After the tapes dissappeared I thought maybe I was confusing Speed Racer a bit. Glad to see I am not alone! Does anyone else think it came from the same animation studio as the original Scooby Doo? I just noticed that the voice cast is totally the same.

I'm not a see it in theaters type so it has to have a really great trailer to get me to skip on waiting for the DVD. I do like to see sci-fi/action in the big screen for the awesome sound effects so the summer season is probably the only time I'll get out and go. My first job was working as an usher and after seeing what people do in the dark you'd be sour on theaters as well! X-Files, Iron Man, Batman, and Indy are pretty much my to do list every thing else I can wait for. I'm so glad the wait for dvd releases have shortend.

    My 2008 Summer Movies

I have to say this. You two are so cute together. So in tune with each other yet so different.

My summer movies are:  1)Indiana Jones (I'm a Harrison Ford fan) 2)Wanted(Angelina and BRIDGET!) 3) X-files  (I'm a fan and hope to see Gillian's new hairstyle) 4)The Mummy(I can't believe their making another one)  5) Sex and the City. (I have a crush on Sarah Jessica Parker)

    rachelsluv's picture

    In accordance

I am also looking forward to Sex and the City, and The Mummy

but that's about it. The rest I will catch at the second run movie houses or even online.

    woops's picture

    Kind of random . . .

Sarah, my mom was walking through the living room while I was watching the vlog and she thought I was listening to Ellen on my computer -- you were the one talking at the time. I thought it was funny, but then again, I am far too easily entertained. I told her that no, it was not Ellen she heard, but Sarah Warn, creater of the bigest lesbian web site online (yeah, I actually said that lol). Five minutes later she walks through the room again and says she really sounds like Ellen! I don't really think you do . . . but I thought it was funny that she thought you did.

Do all lesbians sound the same to straight people?

I am really looking forward to seeing the Bridget McManus Angelina Jolie movie!

    moviegrl's picture

I agree with alot of your picks..

Speed Racer is going to be a fancy glossy Dukes of Hazzard but they will make bankrolls. Oh and The Longshots is directed by Fred "Limp Bizkit" Durst....thats pretty interesting.

    I also want to see:

Son of Rambow....kids re-enacting Rambo with guerilla style camera work....I think many of the vloggers might enjoy this.

The Happening....M Night Shyamalan gets to push the envelope so I'm curious if this will disappoint me as much as his last - Lady In The Water and also Matt Reeve's - Cloverfield.

The Rocker.....with Christina Applegate and Rainn Wilson should be funny.

    Lor2488's picture

    My List

Wanted - 30% for Ms Jolie, 70% for Ms McManus <3

    SATC - Obviously!!

    Mamma Mia - Sing-song :)

    Speaking of X-Files

Gillian in a tie carrying Mulder-swoon.

I'm looking forward to Indian Jones 4, Iron Man, Dark Knight, Incredible Hulk (though he looks like a big emo), Mamma Mia, Get Smart and X-Files and can't think of anything else off hand. Baby Mama will come out here in a few weeks, so don't know if that counts as a summer film over in the States. I'm seeing that purely for Sigourney Weaver.

Wondering if the Happening is just going to be anti climatic.

    Venn diagram=hilarious...but useful!

    lezgirllover's picture

    I agree with Lori

You are not the only one who´s over Angelina Jolie... I´m watching that movie just for Bridget and I too loved The Mummy (Rachel Weisz?? HOOOOT)

I used to watch Birds of Prey just cause of the lead actress but it actually grew on me.

Sarah ranting about theater slots going to stupid movies and Lori´s Venn Diagram were awesome.

Glad to have you back enlightening us with your opinions about sucky movies!

2 For the Price of 1...

I'm very much looking forward to Wanted... what with Angelina Jolie & Bridget McManus in the movie, I'll be getting 2 for the price of 1... two of the most attractive women gracing the big screen in what looks to be one Hell of an action packed film!

I'm also looking forward to seeing what will be made of the foray back to the big screen for the X-Files, after having been a longtime fan of the series and of Gillian Anderson as Scully!

Also on my radar: Iron Man, Indiana Jones & the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull (for Cate Blanchett), Get Smart (a nice departure from all the action of summer), Hellboy II: The Golden Army (loved the first one, enjoyed Selma Blair in it), The Dark Knight (Christian Bale is always great in everything and it'll be very interesting to see the late Heath Ledger's work in this movie). I'm not sure about The Happening but since it stars Zooey Deschanel I might just have to see this one. Finally, Speed Racer looks kind of interesting, in particular Christina Ricci being in the film.

And while it's not your typical "summer release", plus I'm not sure of the release date, I'm looking forward to the Tina Fey/Amy Poehler film Baby Mama.
