AfterEllen.com's managing editor Malinda Lo guest-stars on this episode of She Made Me Watch This!, which is dedicated to answering the TV and movie questions you left in the comments last week. Questions like:
We also discuss our favorite L Word storylines from this season, and which shows we're most excited about returning in April.
Plus Malinda and I get into a lively punctuation argument (I blame the British!), and the bunny injured in last week's episode makes her first on-camera appearance since the accident. Submitted by on March 31, 2008 - 10:43am. |

Heating technicians fix radiators. If your radiator's on the brink, you should probably call a heating and cooling specialist.

Malinda!
I am quite excited about Malinda's guestbian appearance... I have missed her on The Lo-Down!
Thanks, Sarah and Lori, for taking time to read (and answer!) our questions! Too bad about Cashmere Mafia, though it was pretty much expected from everything I had read... :(

Thanks for Your Responses
It's great for you to give us an update on tv shows and movies? Thanks for answering my question. I figured WE doesn't have much Lesbian content.
I didn't know that about some tv shows aren't able to be released on dvd b/c of the music industry rights. Really sad! I was wondering what was going on.
Sarah W, you're right people will start downloading tv shows b/c it's more accessible. People will always find a way.Plus the internet will be a bigger avenue for people to watch more diversed shows b/c of the government's chain on tv networks censorship . I see it coming. So, I think it's wise for future brainstomers begin to plan their tv network business online now.
A lesbian entertainment trivia, I smell marketablitiy there.
I don't care if Afterellen is run overed with Dinah Shore vlogs. As long I'm able to see all the fun that was missed. I can't wait!
Have fun!
Friday Night Lights!

I like Sara Warn's shirt. I have a tattoo artist drawing up my next tattoo that was inspired by Bridgett McManus' posterboard.
Thank you
Thanks for answering my "Bad Girls" question. I too am very concerned that if they made an American version it would get all screwed up. And yes their are exceptions to using commas outside of quotations. From a site about grammar tips:
The only exception is when that last little item enclosed in quotation marks is just a letter or a number, in which case the period or comma will go outside the closing quotation marks:
Shelley C
I'm not English, or American, at all.
So when you write a quote and you put a reference after it, the ,/. still goes inside the quote? That's just the total opposite of what we're being told at my uni.
"I am obviously looking forward to Battlestar Galactica" (Lo, 2007).
The dot after says that the reference belongs to the quote, no?
More on the quotation punctuation thing
The site you reference - http://grammartips.homestead.com/inside.html - puts it quite nicely, I think: When it comes to commas and periods, though, logic doesn't enter into the equation, at least not in the United States.
In British and Commonwealth English, the punctuation is placed where it makes sense in the context of the quotation. So, if a quote has a question mark, of course it goes inside. However, if the quotation is only part of the whole sentence, it's that sentence that gets punctuated. The site's example of the latter is:
Have you read the assigned short story, "Flowering Judas"?
Apparently you lot in the US put the question mark inside the quotes, which seems strange (and doesn't make sense in the context of the "exceptions" to the US rule).
Commas
I loved how you guys talked about use of commas and quotation marks. I always get confused too.
Now that I am being geeky: Lori, please bring back your spreadsheets!
- - - - - - - - - -
-Everyone is entitled to be stupid, but some abuse the privilege.
Who doesn't blog these days?
full stops go OUTSIDE quotation marks!
Always, for all quotations no matter what. The full stop belongs to the entire sentence, not to the quote! I'm sort of fussy about that. But then again, I follow the British style - American spelling sometimes drives me crazy. As do most punctuation, grammar and spelling errors. Mostly. (forum posts are excluded!)
I'm definitely with you about gay men being more entertaining than lesbians, I've been boring my friends silly ranting about it and trying to fit it into all my papers and presentations. The stereotype of gay effeminate men is funny because men are lowering themselves down to the level of the woman; the stereotype of the lesbian masculine dyke is THREATENING because women are seen as challenging men.
And thank you for all the lovely ranty feministy dialogue today - were you preparing for your Wellesley forum? heh. Also I definitely agree with Malinda about the lack of Asian women, lesbian or otherwise, or even Asian men on American tv (not that I know much about American tv, just what I can get here and what I read online). It's probably why I like watching Heroes, with the Japanese and Indian guys, and the kind of chubby police guy - I'm so glad that heroes don't have to look all glamourous. Though of course, all the women on the show are perfect and are either strippers or cheerleaders. Yeah. But definitely hurrah for Asian representation. I still get amazed sometimes when I remember that Lucy Liu went to America at the age of 4 and apparently couldn't speak English at all. Anyway, so I say more feministy ranty dialogues! Just as long as you don't wind up channelling Sheila Jeffreys or Andrea Dworkin. And yes, I'm a total nerd, I spend most of my free time in the uni library reading Judith Halberstam and Gill Valentine.
Copy Edit Rules
The comma rule isn't so much a British/American thing as a manual of style thing -- so it depends what kind writing you are doing.
To mix things up different British newspapers use different rules and the BBC uses both.
The main manuals of style are Oxford (outside) and Chicago (inside) -- which is why we get all confused! And why we assume it is an American/British thing. There are plenty of Americans who use Oxford and plenty of Brits who use Chicago because it depends on other stylistic factors (like footnotes, endnotes, references). The more precise style, generally used by technical and scientific publications, is to put the quotation mark outside unless in the original source material.
I am so disturbed by the fact that I know this!
Thanks!
I've spent the entire night
Blood ties
I really hope it'll be picked up for at least another season.
And finally Bones and 30 Rock are coming back, I can't wait ^^
that was WRISTCUFFY ;)
thanks for answering our questions and yayyy for the Sarah Connor Chronicles supposedly being back :D
Have fun at DS! :P

I'm looking forward to seeing Life whenver it returns and 30 Rock. Tina Fey is a genius.
wristcuffy...wristcuffy...wristcuffy... wristcuffy...
hi Sarah (and Lori and Malinda),
good job pronouncing my name! (or not so much...). that was very wristcuffy of you. i guess that's what i get for having such a Jewish - Israeli name. but seriously, thanks for the info, the attention and the dedication. that, also, was totally wristcuffy on your part.
oh, and "they don't know what to do with women"... that is the quote of the year for me, and probably why i'm a lesbian :P (am i wristcuffy worthy or what?)
p.s.
is it noticeable that i'm a wristcuffy fan / promoter?
lovespring international
great vblog
I found your discussion on how straight and gay men in power influence whether lesbians are shown on tv very interesting. I myself have often wondered if the lack of lesbians on t.v has something to do with society and I would guess these straight men in power feeling more threatened by lesbians than by gay men. It would seem that way because I can seriously say I see more gay male characters on tv or in movies than lesbians. And its really unfair.
Hands down Moonlight over Blood Ties.
I have tried watching Friday Night Lights but I just cannot get into it.
So looking forward to Gossip Girl, House, Moonlight, Bones.
Nice to see Malinda again and looking forward to the new vblogs. Poor Lori, you need to watch more tv.
.
Cold Case is also a TV show that sadly won't be released because of music industry rights :( What a pitty, it is such a great show
I'm SO looking forward to 30 Rock 8-) And I hope that the Sarah Connor Chronicles will be picked up for at least another 10.000 seasons
Loved the banter between
Loved the banter between Sarah and Malinda! Very wristcuffy, I must say.
Sarah, I TOTALLY agree with you on Niki(I was surprised no one pick it up,thought it was just me)from the first time she talked to Jenny to convince her to put her as the lead, I thought she was feigning being gay to get the part! She looked too straight to be a gay Niki,was waiting for her to reveal that she was actually straight too!
Glad I am not the only one
I really did think that i was only 1 that thought niki seemed really very straight so glad others thought the same. In general I totally agree with what you are saying here choco.
P.s the vlog was so wristcuffy, i loved it!!!
Great!
Thanks for another great vlog.
Regarding men in the media being supportive of women I was surprised noone mentioned Joss Whedon as his shows usually feature strong women, plus he's gay friendly!
What the Frak?
I'm so, so, disappointed to hear Sarah and Lori just don't see the mastery of Battlestar Galactica - I'm normally in synch with their snarking. I agree with all those who have said the best show on television! For sure it's the best discussion of contemportary (read Bush era) American politics. I don't know where the ride is going to end up, but I know I'm going to be moved and excited as they take me there.
And in the question of Bloodties/Moonlight? Bloodties, hands down. I mean, Christina Cox's sculpted biceps, highly defined abs, skimpy tank-tops (or bookish turtlenecks with glasses) yow!
Wrist-cuffiest vlog ever!
Lori was just adorable in the corner, lost to what the hell Sarah and Malinda were talking about.
Lori, does your shirt say, "Scooby Doo, Where are you?"
My big three are Bones, House and BSG.
"Bad jokes are us, ur me."
cold case
i'm so excited for the most likely return of T:SCC.
cold case is series that will never see the light of day on DVD b/c of music rights.
So Fetch!
Does anyone know when season 2 of how i met your mother will be released on dvd in England? x
~~~~~~~~xxx~~~~~~~~~
Shall I abide in this dull world, which in her absence is no better then a sty?
I loved Wonderfalls
I'm so glad the entire season aired in my country :)
Looking forward to the Dinah vids!
"Be who you are and say what you feel, because those who mind don't matter, and those who matter don't mind." (Dr. Seuss)
you know,
of all the things that would hold up a dvd release, I NEVER would've thought it was the music rights! But that really does explain so much. I always wondered why I could get freaks and geeks (greatest. show. ever!) on dvd but not Ally!
thanks for the info
p.s. anyone know where i can get the last couple of episodes of women's murder club or watch bloodties online?
Torrent
www.mininova.org
they shut down torrentspy, but try mininova, and if you don't have torrents, go to www.btsites.tk
Online episodes of
Blood Ties at Lifetime's official site.
Thank you for making the world make sense Sarah Warn!
Yes! Thank you Sarah Warn for explaining why some DVD's are not released. I never understood why the BEST show in the world "Ally Mcbeal" was released in China and France but not in the US or Canada. I had to order the box set from China on ebay. Very good quality though, removable subtitles.
p.s. I was very tempted to add a comma after the "Ally Mcbeal" quotation, but I didn't. :)
Puncations
My friends often discuss puncations, spellings, and general grammer in front of me like Sarah and Malinda did and I often felt like Lori nothing great to say luckily I usually have a friend and we both talk about other stuff till they've finished their mini debate.
Great Vlog and strangely had a similar conversation with someone about how are straight/gay men controlling everything?
Women's Murder Club
WMC
And it's still on the line for a second season, so if you want it back, tune in for those three episodes - particularly the first one on Tuesday April 29th @ 10pm! The ratings for that first show will determine whether it gets picked up for a second season.
It's in the same timeslot as L&O:SVU, so if you watch that, make sure you DVR it and watch WMC!
Save WMC
Great episode!
It's quite sad for me that Cashmere Mafia is not coming back :( I somehow got really attached to the show; and loved, loved, loved Lucy Liu in it! Your comments on the show having an inaccessible take on fashion is definitely noteworthy. If I remember correctly, however, only the characters Mia and Caitlin have outlandish costumes; which is relatively sensible considering the industries in which they work.
Anyhow, thanks for your insightful comments on commas and the DVD release procedure (the latter helped me with revision for a Marketing paper!) :D***
Three cheers!
Thank you for answering my question, Sarah. I do hope Exes and Oh's come back, and as soon as possible.
It was hilarious that Lori just let Malinda and Sarah discuss through the most part of the vlog!
Very enlightening, girls! Thanks again!
I agree with Sarah on this one...
The content of the Tudors is just distasteful in the casual power differential between the sexes. This isn't a documentary, why celebrate such bias in our entertainment?
But it took non-stop promos to finally annoy me. Without the promo overkill, I would have just not tuned in when a show I did not want to watch came on. At first, I just muted the TV, but finally, I gave up and cancelled Showtime.
I usually like to support networks which take risks on the types of programming I enjoy, but man, could they be any farther off on marketing to my demographic. I feel I must reward such shortsightedness with cancellation.
About iTunes
I get how it saves money and stuff not to make DVDs for shows and just have them available to download but here in Australia, we can't download them from our ITunes store and we can't access the US store. So it really does disadvantage the international audience, especially if most of the shows aren't even aired in our countries like South of Nowhere. And Australia does gets plenty of US shows, but only the ones that I guess are popular in the US, like Grey's Anatomy and Heroes.
On other note, I agree about Katee Sackhoff and Bionic Woman. I can't wait for BSG to come back! :)
iTunes..
I'm excited about
Arrested Development as well... no wait.
If the stories aren't dragging on and on, I might start watching Lost again.
Thank You...
It would be remiss of me not to send out a big Thank You to all three of you wonderfully informative ladies for answering all 3 of my questions: A. Why was Wonderfalls taken off the air way before its time?
B. Why did such an apparently (at least from the pilot) great show like Nikki & Nora not get picked up by the networks? This question could be asked of many great concepts that were supposed to become TV shows and were never picked up.
C. Finally how is the decision made about what movies (and TV shows) are released on DVD and when? For example I (and many others) have been waiting forever for Once and Again:Season 3 to be released on DVD and yet there are tons of others movies and TV shows (that are so awful) that have been released on DVD?
Your answers... particularly the very enlightening and informative answers to my B. and C. questions were awesome. I had some notion of what I thought might be the answers, but I don't think that I ever knew about the music industry "holding hostage" the release of DVD's... fascinating and yet still very annoying!
