SHE MADE ME WATCH THIS! Jan 4, 2008

In our first video blog of 2008, Lori and I review a handful of new movies, including the Denzel Washington-led drama The Great Debaters; the new Will Smith sci-fi flick I Am Legend; Helen Hunt's directorial debut Then She Found Me, which also stars Bette Middler and Colin Firth; and a little-known girls basketball movie Believe in Me, based on a true story of a team in Kansas in the 1950s (you know what a sucker I am for sports movies!).

We also share what we did during the holiday break, and why you'll never catch us doing improv.

Good to have you two back!

The movie with Rene Russo is Outbreak...the one with the monkey.

Lori, you NEED to see Hoosiers. Fantastic movie.

I Am Legend was a good movie, but I felt it was a little anti-climatic in the end.

Good to hear that The L Word gets better...the first episode was horrible. Two mentions of the manatees, WTF!

    Prophet's picture

    Really. I loved the first

Really. I loved the first episode of season 5 from the LWord. I think its just gonna keep getting better.

Haven't watched I am Legend yet, will this weekend. Came back from watching JUNO, great movie.

    Missed you guys BIG TIME!!!!

    I second that

I thought the first L-Word Ep was fabulous. It was witty and well Tina's just eye candy!

I haven't watched the v-log yet, but I second the recomendations for Hoosiers! Fantastic movie.

    Thanks for the vlog ladies!

I Am Legend sounds a lot like 28 Days Later.

Damn right I'm good in bed, I can sleep for days!

    !

I am Legend was alright. I liked how they visually told the background story; but that was the only refreshing aspect of the film. Everything else seemed to familiar.

If I want the truth about television shows and movies I come to this vlog. Thank you.

    so glad your back!!!

it's soo good to have you two back. i was just about to go into serious withdrawal, lol. it's lucky i had all the old episodes to tide me over :D

i can't wait for Cashmere Mafia either. thanks for all the info and updates on it.

     thanks for another great vlog!

Lori...great tee...where did you get it...?

I probably won't see I Am Legend...just because this is not the first time that I heard/read the Old Yeller comparison.

I already know I am going to buy The Great Debaters when it comes out on DVD because I found out that Denzel interviewed the actual college students (in their late 80s now) this movie is based upon and from what I heard...the female debate student is a mix of several of the female students though one in particular.

The other two movies you all reviewed...I had not heard of them until now...but both look interesting.

I was shopping in Kenneth Cole and discovered this line of t-shirts. The men's t-shirt don't run too large or too small. They're just perfect and support social causes! Check them out.

It's great to be back. We missed vlogging too!  I'm impatiently waiting for Cashmere Mafia and the Sarah Conner Chronicles.

Speaking of t-shirts, I'm sure people have asked, but have you considered getting some made up with your bunnies on them? I guarantee people would want them. At least, I would...

    about old yeller

i didn't want to see this movie specifically because of that, but i should say that it was handled well...it was very understandable if you catch my drift, and not as upsetting as i would have thought. and i'm the kind of girl that won't watch Bambi again because it upsets me...

    "TIX3"? I'm confused

..and is it just my CNN junkie mind that read Sarah's tish as "POLITICIANS"?

Anyway.. I have nothing interesting to say. Just that, at first, I was happy that you AEers wouldn't be posting anything during X-mas (for us who spent the holidays without internet access) but I certainly missed you guys and realized that time spent catching up here would have been time good spent. But hey, absence makes the heart grow fonder! =D

    Welcome Back, Ladies!

Regarding the basketball movie, I can't believe they didn't have the girls playing the half-court game! Someone really dropped the ball (pun intended) in their research there. The girls game was played half-court until the 1960's. The only games that were played full court were the exhibition games played by teams like , "The Red-Headed League" who were kind of like the Harlem Globe-Trotters of women's basketball for that time.

My mother and her twin sister played high school basketball from 1959-1963. My mother was a forward and her sister was a guard. All the guards played defense on one side of the court, and all the forwards played offense on the other side of the court. Plus there were a lot of ridiculous rules for the girls like you could only dribble three times.

    Welcome Back!

I am Legend freaked me the hell out. I knew what to expect but I underestimated it. The emotions you feel while watching this movie are way to real. I've had to tell myself several times that it's only a movie. I'm hoping that seeing it again will help me get over it because I'm tired of sleeping with a night light.

    Thanks, ladies!

Thank you for discussing The Great Debaters - I'm looking forward to seeing it more than any other film out right now. And thank you for that clip - just another reason to see it.

I'll be curious to see Believe in Me next to The Heart of the Game. I love women's sports movies (A League of Their Own still makes me cry everytime I see it), and as we all know, there are only a few to choose from, so one more is great news! Thanks for pointing us to this film! Now, if only someone would make a movie based on In These Girls Hope Is a Muscle.

    The Great Debaters

Welcome back to the world of vlogging! I love the shirt, Lori, and definitely will be checking out the Kenneth Cole collection, per your recommendation.

I thought The Great Debaters was incredible...it rivals A Mighty Heart, I think, in the way it really challenges your purview. The movie deftly touched on so many issues (without being preachy) and just lets the horror of the circumstances speak for themselves. I think the movie benefited not from any overtly strong individual performance, but a strong collective performance from a great ensemble cast--it reminded me of Crash in that way.

That said, I do want to acknowledge the performance of Jurnee Smollett, as Samantha Booke, who had some really breakout moments in the movie (one of which you included in the vlog). I hope to see more of her in the future. She's come a long way from her days as Denise on Full House.

Sidenote: The movie's set in 1935 and, if I remember correctly, there wasn't actually a woman on the team that year. Samantha Booke is loosely based on the experience of Henrietta Bell, the team's first female debater, who graduated from Wiley in 1934, and was a part of the first interracial debate. When Wiley College won the national championship (against USC, not Harvard, as depicted in the movie), they weren't actually allowed to call themselves national champions because they weren't members of the debating society.

And honestly, can I just say that I'm glad to see a movie about young black people that's not about dancing, music or basketball? Or, really, a movie about young college students that focuses on a purely academic pursuit--when's the last time we saw that? As a recovering nerd, I couldn't be more proud.

    The power of oratory: that

The power of oratory: that is what The Great Debaters is all about. It's not a movie that I'd typically see in theaters but I'm strongly considering it after seeing that clip, plus a movie that stimulates the intellect is always good.

As for I Am Legend, I agree with you ladies' assessment. There are so many layers to that movie. One thing that I liked was how he was able to or tried rather to maintain his social skills after being virtually alone for something like 3 years (a la talking to the manikins in the video store). That's the sociologist in me picking up on behavioral stuff. But really it turned out that this movie had a little something for everyone, but with a SciFi twist!

And you could even make fun of it! My friends said the moral of the story was: don't try to cure cancer! LOL

The ending, however, was meh! but over all a pretty good movie.

The others I don't think I'll watch. Don't seem appealing, sorry. Hoosiers just doesn't interest me. I guess sports movies just aren't my thing!

Anywho, welcome back. I was desperately in need of a Vlog fix!

    Will blog for food!

    Welcome back!

It's good to see new vlogs on Afterellen - the hiatus was way too long :-)

I really liked "I am legend", although I'm not a big fan of Will Smith. But he was ok in this movie.

I won't watch "Then she found me". The book was great and I won't ruin it with watching a somehow "ok" movie.

Can't wait for "Cashmere Mafia" and I loved your shirt, Lori!

Don't worry, Lori, you're not alone. I zoned out somewhere in the middle of season 2 of the L word, I half-heartedly watched Sarah Shahi's scenes but ... meh. Meh.

As for Cashmere Mafia - it gets an OMGICAN'TWAIT bunny from me. Too bad it won't be aired here in three years or so. DVDs, anyone?

    I am Legend

Urgh 2nd time writing this as i didnt realise i had been signed out!

Welcome back! Xmas was sooo boring with nothing new to read/watch...hope u had a gd xmas/new year etc...

I saw I am Legend with my family on Boxing day (My mum didnt realise what it was about when she booked it and spent most the film covering her face). Overall i thought it was an alright film, i didnt get bored or want to leave halfway through, but i probably wont watch it again (it did make a refreshing change for the main male and female characters not to be romantically involved). It definitely reminded me of 28 Days Later - just less gory and scary.

I cant wait to see the new L Word - ive been watching promos etc on Youtube and am hoping its going to be good!

    Yepeee You Two R Back ! =)

HUGZ. Happy New Year to you Ladies! I hope your vacation was well deserved. I am glad you two included "The Great Debaters" in your movie review. My Aunt and her family went to see it. One day I will. I'm curious about the movie "I am Legend",as sci-buff, it's difficult to like a sci-fi that hasn't been redone in  typical traditional sci-fi themes.  I'm so glad you let us know about "Believe in Me" I most def want to see that on dvd. I can see you two play some b-ball back in the day. I bet Lori's team will over Sarah's team. She seems like she can get down and dirty on the court.   I wish you had covered Sweeney Todd, a great movie  directed by Tim Burton which is based on the musical.

I agree with you Lori, I think the L word possibly may have good new season on Season 5. It still sucks Dana isn't on it. I think the character Tasha makes up for that loss. Let's hope they don't kill her off.

    Diggin your shirt Lori! =)

    Another true womens basketball movie

All i could think about when you girls were talking about Believe in Me

was about a movie I saw just a weak ago that's from 2004 (I think) and it's called Double Teamed. It's about he twin sisters Heidi & Heather Burge and their story. It's was pretty cool movie, you can't be too picky with the number of women's basketball (or any sport really) movies or tv shows (or even books for that mather).

Just thought I'd should let you know. :)

I believe I'm one of the few who still actually likes The L-Word! ;) I'm really curious about the new season though.

I missed you guys! Glad to see you back!

    Exit Strategy

I got not much to say about the movies, since haven’t seen any of the mentioned and I guess I probably wouldn’t part with $12 to see another big visual effect flick, backdrop in Manhattan. I’ll mostly wait for the DVD.

    RE: Cashmere Mafia

Ummm…now the expectation is mounting high and we don’t want to set this kid up for failure. I do have my concerns (more so after I came across Malinda's article –Lesbian back in Network TV), since I don’t have much faith in Network TV in portraying underrepresented groups, as the networks cave all the time, to whoever or whatever they feel the need to cave. And, it’s ABC, one wee step up from FOX. (I take all the hypes a grain of old salt. However, I certainly do hope the network would prove me wrong, seeing that Obama has won in a 95% white state. The America is evolving, slowly, but evolving.)

On a SATC note, as a buff,

I hope Cashmere Mafia won't open up with Carrie, Miranda, Samantha and Charlotte sitting in an upper east side diner and debating about something I read in the textbooks, like said, “The Art of Merge & Acquisition”.

Or, I don’t want to see they make Somerville’s character living in the trendy Meat Packing District and meeting her potential love interest while shopping in newly open Apple store. (not that there is anything wrong with it.)

And she better not worship Manolo Blahnik. That would be SOOOOOOOOOO last decade and SATC ripoff. Not cool. @_@

I watched the censored S5EP01 TLW at ourchart… nothing to be too excited about, the usual Ilene’s alter ego, talking to her manatees, but, what can I say… it’s our game, our only adult-game in town, so I would, of course, tune in. Dammit, Ilene. (but I did notice MM seems doing a better job smooching up JB.)

Great to have you back, and I am digging the longer hair, Sarah & Lori. : )

PS: Sarah, you got nothing to feel bad about; you look young at your age (not that 30-something is old in any stretch) and your girl, Lori, WOW.., in her full-bloom. That’s all I can say. (OK. This is my Exit Strategy. ;-))

    a future movie recommendation...

REALLY GREAT TO HAVE YOU BACK!!!!!!!!

    Trix's picture

I'll definitely check out one of these

The debating movie looks excellent. I was in a debating team in college (high school), but I got relegated to writing arguments, since I suffered from cripping stage fright. Oh well. It's an interesting period too, and the race and class stuff looks great.

Not too sure about Will Smith. It seems that the whole premise of it - scientists develop new treatment and turn people into ebil zombies - is nicked directly from Serenity. Still, it's a different spin, I suppose.

As for that terrible game where you don't get to dribble the ball, we still play that in the former British colonies - netball. It's by far the biggest women's sport in Aus/NZ/UK/Caribbean/SA... and isn't as boring as you basketballers might think. They still wear the little skirts too. :-)

Oh, and as for the "no improv" thing, I am totally with you, sistahs. (See above re stage fright. Also, I do the best diagrams!)

    Echodiana's picture

    missed the vblog

Is that the chosen collection in the background...i'm green with envy. and i'm taking a guess and saying the one next to it is the Angel box set.

The Great Debaters seems good but also depressing which prevents me from actually seeing it.

I didn't find i am legend scary but it kind of dragged. It wasn't bad but a better movie in that same vein is 28 days later. The dog thing i really wasn't into.

I really don't like sports movies except Love and Basketball and Bring it on.  Guard? Hookshot? Center forward? all Latin to me.

So looking forward to the L word and Cashmere Mafia. And i'll break with tradition here and say i really didn't like Dana. I don't mind her being gone.

It's so good to have you guys back. And Trix about netball i know what you're talking about. That's what the girls play at our schools but i was never into it.

    Trix's picture

Heh, I loathed netball when I was at school. I was a hockey girl, myself (and would have probably played soccer if girls did that kind of thing then).

    As

everyone has said WELCOME BACK! I'll only add DON'T DO IT AGAIN :)

I'm kinda in agreement with you about the movies, except:

I didn't think The Great Debaters was brilliant because I feel about dramas the same way you 2 feel about sci-fi/horror movies where everyone dies due to a virus. All the drama makes it hard for me to concentrate on the story and the acting.

And sport movies are not really my thing. Don't care if it's all girls. I only love soccer therefore would only care about a sport movie if it was about soccer, so clearly you can already guess that I loved Bend it Like Beckam :)

Lori, I'm with you about The L Word except I stopped caring after they got rid of Marina. Yeah I know, it's been a while, I should get over it, but no other character has captivated me as she did. Now, I watch the show when I have nothing better to do.

Again, good to have you back.

    Model through it's picture

Not sure, but I think the

Not sure, but I think the girl in The Great Debaters played Michelle's friend on Full House...and I feel like a total dork for recognizing her, especially since it's been years since I've watched an episode of that show.

The book "I am Legend" is really good

I haven't been to see "I am Legend" yet but I've read the book by Richard Matheson.

The book is really excellent and a must read for horror fans as it's claimed to have inspired every Zombie/ Vampire flick since it's release in the fifties. It's really intense and claustrophobic and everyone I've lent it to loves it.

In the book he's an average jo stuck in a town in the middle of nowhere not in Manhattan. I'm guessing that the ending of the film is the same as the book (because it's such a awesome ending) so if your a horror fan I implore you to read the book before you see the film otherwise it'll spoil it, it's only about 100 pages it won't take long!

I'm scared to go see the film because I known I'll be thinking the whole way through "It's not as good as the book"

    Shesaloveryea's picture

    I am Legend

When I went to see I am Legend with some friends we walked into the wrong theater catching the last 5 minutes of the movie. I was able to catch up on the whole movie after finding out why the credits were rolling.
I'm sort of stuck on why people just didn't take a sample of Will Smith's(which obviously had the cure) and injectc it in others or find the cure in that.
I probably would have a better review of the movie if I had seen the whole thing but...

    I Am Legend

I realize I'm posting on something over two months old - I'm usually a little on the slow side.

I am wondering if anyone that has seen the movie would be willing to tell me how it ends.  I have read the book and absolutely loved it.  While I usually don't like to know the ending of a movie, I'm not in any hurry to drop down my cash to watch the hollywood bastardization of an excellent book.  I'm curious to know if the social commentary remains or if it's everyone goes home and life continues as though it was a bad dream.

    Believe in Me.

Ha! I just had to give props to Sarah. I happened upon this movie today on the WE channel and because of her review (and the fact that the coach is played by the lead in Burn Notice) I watched most of it (things to do around the house ya know) and I really enjoyed it. A great little story and a great little movie. :)
