News, Reviews & Commentary on Lesbian and Bisexual women in Entertainment and the Media

SHE MADE ME WATCH THIS! Fall pilot review: "Aliens in America", "Reaper" and "Cane"

In our final pilot review before the fall season begins in a few weeks, Lori and I discuss what works (and doesn't work) about three more new fall pilots: Aliens in America (The CW), Reaper (The CW), and Cane (CBS).

The short version? Cane is the Jimmy Smits-led Latino family drama, Reaper is the Buffy-esque dramedy of a young man who discovers on his 21st birthday that his parents sold his soul to the devil, and Aliens explores how a Wisconsin family reacts when a Pakistani Muslim exchange student comes to live with them (hint: not well).

Since most of the lead characters in these shows are men, why do you care? Reaper and Cane were created/written by women, and the prejudice Raja faces in Aliens will probably seem more than a little familiar to lesbian and bi women in the U.S.

Also, Reaper is one of the funniest dramedies we've seen on TV in a long time.

Why else do you care? Missy Peregrym. Paola Turbay. Original Cindy Valerie Rae Miller.

Plus Rita Moreno, Amy Pietz and a teenage girl who's "sweetly unaware of how good looking she is." (Seriously, you can't make this stuff up.)

Watch the vlog below (no major spoilers) — and next weekend, look for our vlog about Jodie Foster's new movie The Brave One!

    ...

I am planning on watching Reaper. I thought the premise was funny(dorky ghost rider), Tyler Labime(sp) getting another show, and Missy Peregrym replacing Nikki Reed (sold me).

Not Aliens. It sounds good but it just does grab me.

Cane, not going to watch, just isn't my kind of show.

I'd mock Lori's shirt, but I also own a Star Wars themed shirt... and a Lord of the Rings themed shirt.

     so, mock her I cannot.

    It's Like Pop-Up Video

Is this the most favorable-review edition of "She Made Me Watch This!" to date? I think so.

Of the three pilots you reviewed this week, the only one I've seen is "Cane" and I certainly share your opinion of it...granted, my opinion should be taken with a grain slab of salt because I'm certain that I'd love any show with Jimmy Smits. There are a few scenes in "Cane" where Smits' character is talking about ethanol and I had a Matt Santos from "The West Wing" flashback. Ahh, President Santos...

    Um...but, I digress...

I loved this show--great cast, great story (a jam-packed pilot, as you might expect) and it's beautifully shot. I want to say that this is the first drama, based around the lives of a Hispanic family, since "American Family" (PBS) and "Resurrection Blvd." (Showtime), both of which were fantastic, though short-lived. I'll be interested to see how "Cain" contrasts with them, as they were based around Mexican-American families, while "Cane" is decidedly Cuban...though I suspect the cultural differences might be only reflected in the music. Whatever the case, I hope that "Cain is able to outlive its predecessors.

(Sidenote: I really, really wish that they'd gotten Six Feet Under's Freddy Rodríguez as a part of this cast. Perhaps as the youngest son...)

Your positive review of "Aliens in America" assauges my concerns about the show a bit, but...to date, I haven't even been able to sit through the commercial without thinking: ohmigosh it's Luke Danes (of "Gilmore Girls" fame). Maybe I'll be able to make it through the pilot now that I know that his character on "Aliens in America" is cast in a different mold.

    great vlog

I plan on watching all three shows

Reaper mostly because of Missy but also I love watching ray wise as a bad guy...he's great at that..

aliens in America just sounds awesome..because its dealing with something that is going on today...sadly...but putting on a funny spin...hopefully America will watch it and learn something along the way and hey if nothing else because Amy pietz is in it..and she is smoking hot..not to mention a good actress

the only reason I want to watch cane is because of Rita monero....I love everything she is in...there is a great reason she is one of nine people in the world who has a....Grammy, Emmy, Tony and an Oscar...because she is one awesome performer.

    Finally something new!

I think your reviews make these shows sound fantastic. You guys are pretty funny and I happen to like Lori's shirt. It would only be better if it was a superhero.

If the good old USA took a good look at itself it might like Aliens in America. It seems that no one wants to appear racist, yet everyone seems to have the same concerns on at least some level (about terrorism, not racism). If you can't laugh at yourself, who the heck are you going to laugh at? I am not a racist, however I do pay close attention to all around me and although approach certain groups with a stereotype in the back of my mind, I do not at all shut them out or not allow myself to get to know and interact with them. I just am cautious of what I know very little about so it takes me longer to get to a point of trusting others.

I do believe that by making people aware of how crazy and silly their own ideas can be that it may actually ease some fears that all of us have of the unknown. Bravo to the writers!

    I'm such a feminist

I'm such a feminist, that I can't watch anything if the lead roles are all male. The same goes for movies. I just can't handle it for some reason:p Well, I'm from the Netherlands so I can't watch these show anyways. But thanks for this vlog anyway, because I always like watching you guys;)

    same here

Same here. I just don't have the patience for the guys, looking for themselves and making the world go around ... I think the only show with a male lead that I am watching now is Dexter that just started on a Hungarian channel - but he is an honorary gay guy:)

    SNARKY COMMENT LINES RULE

SNARKY COMMENT LINES RULE THE WORLD! Those are just brilliant :)

But really, only 8 minutes? Ladies, I had my three cups of morning coffee settled down to accompany this one. And even I'm not that fast of a coffee drinker ;)

Anyway. Excellent reviews once again and I really really really cannot wait to hear your thoughts on The Brave One review (by the way, Jodie Foster looked like a million bucks for the Toronto International Film Festival premiere... *dies*). And that Melissa Etheridge Bunny is a classic! *giggles*

    ray wise

I'll never be able to see him as anything other than Leland Palmer in Twin Peaks. I'm always expecting him to become Leland. Watch this for a quick reminder:

Loved almost everything about Cane. The only thing missing for me is the strong female character. At least a mother figure or something. I still have hope. And in the meantime I'll make do with the fact that Polly Walker plays one half of the rival family.

    rant

i'm in england so i prob wont get to watch these shows, not for a while anyway. while i can see what aliens is tryin to do with the breaking down of stereotypes, it just reminds me of ridiculous ideas, a lot of americans (i in no way think all of you are of this opinion) have about muslims. i dont understand why anyone would look at someones skin colour and automatically assume they were a terrorist. i have friends from pakistan, india, nepal etc all muslim and i'm pretty certain none terrorists, sorry about the rant but it just pisses me off

i wonder if the day will ever come when theres a family drama about a muslim family    . . . somehow i doubt it

    Natty Gann

The role I remember Ray Wise from is playing Natty's father in The Journey Of Natty Gann. I loved that movie. Anyone else remember Natty?
    ebronte76's picture

    Meredith Salenger

I completely forgot about that movie until just now.  It was a favorite...one of those movies I would beg my parents to rent over and over.  "Really? You want to rent this one again?  We rented it just last week..."

Mostly I was just in love with Meredith Salenger as Natty Gann...

    perfectflaw75's picture

    Natty Gann... Twin Peaks

I loved that movie! (I wanted a wolf-dog like the one in the movie...), but I'll always link Ray Wise to Twin Peaks.

I like the revamped snarky comments lines and the Melissa Etheridge bunny. Will you have more bunnies referencing to famous lesbians or dykons in the future???

    Ray Wise still creeps me

Ray Wise still creeps me out because of Twin Peaks, but that just means that him playing the devil sounds like a good choice! (Creepy, but good, especially if he's indeed "nice").

    Amy Pietz!

Well, not being an American I probably won't be seeing any of these shows for some time, but I'll keep an eye out for them. Especially Aliens in America, I adore Amy Pietz. (Lesbian Connection: She played a lesbian on a touching (if sad) episode of Law & Order: SVU, aptly named Alien.)

What I really wanted to say, though, was that I *love* the new snazzy pop-ups! Hilarious, as always!

    I gotta ask

Were you guys in a rush or something? Cause I feel like i've been cheated out of the best part of Saturdays for me. 8 minutes!!!!???? Come on, my old laptop (2 yrs old) takes longer than that to restart from hibernation...

    Love the Buffy references!

    Great vlog as usual

    The sound

    Nice vlog, ladies!

The only thing I'd like to ask is that the sound that comes up with the "gratuitous snark" comments and other comments at the bottom of the screen goes away.  Sorry if this has already been asked but I was seriously twitching in my seat every time it came on.

As usual, you two did a really nice job.  Lori, I like your shirt.

I dont live in an igloo or eat whale blubber...

it always gives me great joy to see a Canadian reference thrown in anywhere...so thank you ladies for that.. it made my day :)

its just too bad that your ability to speak French will only help you if you are lost in the wilds of Quebec seeing as how the other 9 provinces and 3 territories are all english speaking lol : p .. but you are always welcome in beaver country.. my igloo is open to all.. and i shall have timbits and a double-double waiting for you upon your return from the wilderness : D

    I Love The Rating Cards

Another awesome installment of Vlog by you guys. I am still sadden that UK television is not picking up these shows.. it's really annoying.. but thankfuly there is one channel that has bought Prison Break 3rd season and airing it on the same day as the States.. which is a big step up.. finally someone out there is listening to me! lol

Anyways.. back to the topic, I love Missy and I think she was awesome in Stick It, she has an incredible smile..

Lori awesome t-shirt.. I need to get a thundercats, heman one.. please could you tell me if there is an online website that sells these type of shirts, and ship it out to England? :] I'd be grateful!

    Make fun I will not.

    Lori grows every week. Nice.

Why was this vlog so quick? It looked like those interviews where a lot of little pieces were glued together...

For being shorter, it was less tiring, but it seemed you were in a rush!

Loved the comments poping up! Had to pause the vid everytime (I can't hear and read in foreing language at the same time, too much for my little brain!!! =P), what was great, since it gave me the time to laugh before "un-pausing" it! lol!

    Reaper Rocks

I'm still loving this show, although it can be a bit reptitive. Missy's insanely hot as well. Ray Wise is God... Errr... You know what I mean.
