Leading off the first segment of our video blog this weekend, Lori and I detail the many reasons we hated the pilot Lipstick Jungle (NBC), the mid-season drama from Sex and the City's Candace Bushnell that stars Lindsay Price, Brooke Shields, and Kim Raver as high-powered business women who "aren't looking for Mr. Big, they are Mr. Big" (we wish!).
Then we discuss the latest episodes of Damages (FX), The Closer (TNT), and The Best Years (The N), the South of Nowhere (The N) season premiere, and what we'd do if we had Ashley's $12.5 million inheritance. She Made Me Watch This: TV ROUNDUP (August 18, 2007)

It's so much fun
to watch you rant! And Lori is killing me on the beginning - someone should make a fanvideo of Lori's eyebrows (hehe)
"I want her to stake him!"
On another (SON) note, whats with the Aiden sympathy? From what I read most of the fan-base recognizes him as the emo!boy-douchebag that he is. Come on, with the crotch-rocket motorcycle and everything, the only thing he deserves is drastically less screen-time! And no no no, no hatin' of the bangs! :-D
Agreed. =)
The SoN promos did not do Carmen any justice whatsoever. This Friday night, she probably had three short scenes, and it was, like "Woah." That voice! So. Hot. Ohmgee...Ashley might have hot down, but methinks Bangs could very well push her out of the top spot. I was lurking on spashley.com today and noticed how some people are already switching from team Spashley to team Spangs. It's crazy.
Oh, and as for the bangs themselves...I like 'em. =)
...and all was well, and the world smiled.
Hey guys
I love your rants Sarah....much amusement. I have to agree with you both about the lipstick jungle, as a feminist it just pinged so many bad buttons with me: however, South of Nowhere made up for that by about a million percent -
Hey Lori, nice little astrology nuggets -
here's something to explain it all to Sarah

cheers guys

:)
Thank God I'm not the only one
Thank God I'm not the only one who thought that Lipstick Jungle was HORRible! I was afraid you guys would like it, because I saw the preview and it was horrendeous. I had the same reaction to Brooke Shields' character. I was like, she's supposed to be the head of a movie studio?! PLEASE! The women were constantly shown doubting themselves, they weren't at ALL the type of people who could lead a successful corporation and it was just absolutely horrible to watch. The gals did what they could with the material but at the end of the day, I still think that the blame lies solely on the way the show was written. It was terrible!
Cashmere Mafia has my vote. Absolutely. And not just cause it has a gay character on it, but because it seems less retarded.
And on another note, Sarah, dude, what's your obsession with 90210?! :D
Amusing as always.
I Absolutly LLLLUUUUVVVV watching you guys. It was so much fun.
I wasn't caught by the Lipstick Jungle trailer. And from the 9mn hating time you give it on the 25 mn vlog, I probably won't watch it at all. It's just too bad, 'cause I like Brook Shield (endless love, the blue lagon) and Kim Raver. Only base from the trailers, I could tell that Cashmir Mafia is a GO GO, and Lipstick Jungle a NO NO NOt Ever.
Re SON, I agree that they should of name the character Carmen differently, 'cause The Original is such a Big shoes to fill. But please, don't hate the girl. I have no problem with her bang. Her style still OK so far. She's definitly not Ashley, but she seems OK. Give her a chance.
Damages seems pretty intersting. It's not the first time that you guys give it the Go Go on the AE site. I think I'm going to download it from now on.
I'm strarting my day with a smile, thanks to you. Have a nice weekend Ladies. Bye
Funnyyyy!
Very funny again. Had me laughing sooo hard! As a good girl I watched the trailer of Lipstick Jungle first, and I emediately didn't like it, so I was happy to see you guys not liking it either:d Just horrible...
I watched the SoN blog, and I really loved it! And I made a joke about the drinking, but that was just a joke. I never actually thought they were drinking, they were just so funny!:D
And then SoN. Sarah: you're wrong, I totally agreed with Lori about the 12.5 million. Haha! Watching that episode I was thinking: don't just throw that money away!! Silly, silly girls:p
Lori, I would go to America just to come and visit "Maeve", haha!
Damages
Damages keeps turning itself around with each episode and in a totally good way. One minute you think they're going this way and they're going that way and then the next minute it's the other way around and I love it. It doesn't seem gimmick-y and I'm just constantly amazed how much character revalations we get (umm unlike shows like... LOST!) ... it's a mystery wrapped up in a mystery but you get answers and you feel like the story is progressing and you kind of know where things are leading to but not really which I like. It's just really good entertainment and I haven't been so in love with Glenn Close EVER. She's just amazing as Patty Hewes. And Rose Byrne, hmmm :D
And Sarah, rant all you want because it makes for good entertainment if nothing else :) and besides, if you want a balanced show, you need to have equal time to get your anger out as well as when a good show comes along, give equal time for the lovin'. So yeah, rant on!
Closer is another hit. Last season was a bit hit and miss with me, but this year I think they've come back with a vengeange. It's just such a joy to watch and if Kyra Sedqwick doesn't start winning more awards for her role on that show, she's getting robbed because she's amazing! And the writing on that show is just... OMG.
Sarah, astroLOGY not astroNOMY or astrometrics like Seven's lab was called on Voyager ;) but I don't believe in any of that hoohaa either so, whatever :D
I know it's astrology
It was a joke. :) It's been driving Lori crazy for years that I don't know what time I was born, so she can't do my chart, which means she can't ever truly understand me, apparently. Which is just fine with me - I like to leave her guessing. ;)
Love the way you described Damages as always "turning itself around with each episode and in a totally good way." That's it exactly!
I thought at first that
Its Interesting
There's been all this talk about the two shows, that Cashmere is a ripoff of Lipstick, and yet Cashmere is the better series. It's usually the other way around. Then again, Sex and the City never seemed to feature a realistic setting for women in the workplace, so maybe its not so suprising.
And hey, I agree with Lori, just once I'd like to see an inheritance storyline where the characters act responsibly and not like Paris Hilton with the end result being that they blow through their fortune within a few months/years (raise your hands if you think this is the eventual conclusion of this particular storyline).
Lipstick Jungle Verdict
The worst part about
First of all... Sarah, your
First of all... Sarah, your t-shirt? Very tempting ;)
I love Sarah's rant, there's nothing like someone complaining about something while being so funny about it.
I can only throw in my two cents concerning South of Nowhere, well aside from saying "Lipstick Jungle" is a terrible name for a drama revolving around women. Okay so back to SoN, *bows before Sarah for mentioning Aiden's really bad hair cut. It's the first thing that came to mind when I saw him. I'm so glad to see Spencer stepping her foot down and standing up for herself.
It's unconceivable to me that Gabrielle and Mandy playing opposite roles. Very glad that didn't happen.
And again Lori gave the best facial expressions, too funny.
Great vlog as always.
SON
Hey guys, loved your vlog. I wonder if you could tell me when, or if, SON is comin to the UK?
Thanks.
Indeed, we care about the finances.
Brilliant vlog, as always :)
Sarah rants like it's nobody's business. It's freaking brilliant. But I think I wouldn't want to be in the same room with her when she gets angry... *giggles*
And I agree with Lori about the financial aspects in SoN (not that I've watched a single episode, hello stupid Europe). For once I'd like to see someone on tv being mature and wise about their money. Yes.
The "My Eyes, My Eyes" bunny... Word up.
That being said, you two are like the coolest people on earth. And Sarah, where exactly do you shop for clothes?! There's a few shirts you've been wearing that I.WANTS! *nods*
Black is the color
Lori, I totally love that you are very consistent in your choice to wear black... Every good rocker chick wears black!
I wish I'd be able to watch all the shows you are talking about... but TV in Europe, not so much fun.
I can totally understand Sarah's rant and she does rightfully so. I am not a business women but in most movies about women in my job are presented unrealistically too. So I very much understand her. From what I have seen in the trailer these women aren't even fit to have a minor management job.
btw, I would watch if Lori decides to host a financial blog... *eg*
Some bits
Sorry, it will be kind of off-topic: as I see many of you who live in Europe can't watch SON because it's not on tv (I'm European, too, I share the same pain) but all hope is not lost, just pm me if you are interested and I'll give you a "hint".
Sarah, your T-shirt is somewhat juicy, so to speak....And Lori, you look exceptionally hot in this segment :)
Okay, Lipstick Jungle just couldn't be more ridiculous. Especially if we compare it to Cashmere Maffia. Sure, a show needs drama but a brain won't hurt, either.
Best. SMMWT. Ever. "You
Best. SMMWT. Ever.
"You know what I would do with twelve million dollars?"
I swear
I swear I fall in love with you two a little more each week.
Sarah, beautiful ranting. Good job with the 'throughline'. heh.
re The Closer. "Get back to the police work/ I didn't sign up for this/What the hell?!" My thoughts exactly. THANK YOU so much for saying that. I love Kyra like nobody's business, but I'm wary of how much this show has become "Brenda Leigh's Trials and Tribulations".
Damages. You like it! Awesome. Watch Damages, people! It's brilliant!
Finally, I'll be right behind Callean in the signup queue for Lori's financial planning tutorials. :^)
So...
Sarah, I couldn't tell, how exactly do you feel about Lipstic Jungle? My favorite "...maybe you can help me shoot the Lipstic Jungle women..?" Girl, you're hilarious when you're ranting. :)
On a serious note, Lori, please be our Suze Orman, only prettier and fun-er of course
Sarah really delivered this time.
Damn I forgot to mention -
Lori, great look, also good music taste *references new blog*
xxx
sparkly
sarah lays the smackdown!
this was priceless... as hideous as you make lipstick jungle sound.. im happy it sucked because it produced one of the best smackdown rants ever. Sarah gets 10 gold stars for good use of verbal abuse... and for throwing in random buffy references which overwhelms me with the urge to get up and do the Snoopy dance in sheer excitement. long live buffy.
another job well done ladies.
Vlog...
12.5 million
i agree with lori that kyla & ashley should spend their 12.5 wisely. invest on it, why not? i don't wanna watch SoN, 3 seasons from now and see them become impoverished.
and yes, GED? hello? *insert indignant bunny here* i've nothing against GED and those who take it but come on, these are privileged kids. i had hoped they're going to an ivy league school. and who knows, that could set the tone for an all lesbian version of cashmere mafia. -MJ
smile. i just slept with your girlfriend :)
Yowza!
Lipstick Jungle?!
Maybe it's just me, but I can't imagine how anything called "Lipstick Jungle" could possibly end well, though the drive-by certainly sounds promising *chuckles*, anyways great Vlog, I always enjoy it and look forward to it every week, if I had 12 million dollars I'd use it to turn your Vlog into an actual series, so hey, act now and send me the cash pronto, you know you want to =)

Lipstick Jungle
When I saw that Sarah and Lori were going to review Lipstick Jungle I figured I should watch the pilot first (I had it sitting on my computer) I think I watched a whole 12 minutes of it before enough was enough. It was just so bad that if Sarah watched it twice I can't believe that her rant wasn't any longer (the rant was brilliant btw). I haven't seen CM but it has to be better than the crap I watched.
As for SoN vlog am I the only one in which Karmen drove me crazy. Keep Jill lose Karmen if you ask me. I found Sarah and Lori's brief look at the show much more satisfying.
Get a financial coach...planner...guru
I'm with Lori on her assessment of the financial portion of SoN!...lol Of course since I also do that finance stuff for a living...(along with a little school psychology consultation...my excuse for watching teen shows). Of course Ashley is very lucky her sister Kyla has obviously been reading the business pages and possibly consulting with someone...lol Clearly Ashley's mom was and is a gold digger. Getting away from her is a good idea and thankfully hanging with Kyla...although the "It Girls" thing is a bit worrisome and may be Kyla's downfall (a Paris Hilton wannabe is a very bad idea). But of course this is all fodder for future drama...so tune in next week...lol
Praise and, well, astrology
I really enjoyed this week's segment not only because of the lovely ranting and the great chemistry between you two (as always) but because of one little piece of information: Lori, you're a Taurus? Now I know why I can identify with you so easily! May I ask when you were born? (OMG, this is my first comment on AfterEllen.com ever and now I'm gonna be stuck with this psycho reputation... ;)
I also loved that 'astrological' comment about We're Getting Nowhere, 'cause what bugged me about Karman and Jill's blog was, apart from Jill's 'retarded=backwards' comment (so you were actually saying the scene with Aiden and Glen was the most backwards scene? Uh huh, yeah, totally buying it) that really annoyed me, that they were acting way too Leo-ish (I'm sure this is a technical term ;). I don't think I have to explain what I mean- either you are into astrology or you aren't.
No competition for the sweet Libra/Taurus combination of She Made Me Watch This!...
Maybe we should start a
Maybe we should start a thread somewhere on horoscopes & star signs but what do you mean (& I suppose I should direct this to Lori too since she 1st commented on it in the vlog) by saying how Karmen & Jill were both Leos & they were very Leo-ish? I'm just really intrigued now cos I'm a Leo, so I'm wondering what we Leos are supposedly all about then? ;)
Oh & I should just add, love these vlogs even though I never watch any of these shows! Lol!
Pussycats
Damn, I had hoped you'd let me off the hook without further explanations! :)
I admit that my comment about Leos was a bit unspecific... What I meant by Karman and Jill acting Leo-ish was that they both seem to fit in some of the usual Leo stereotypes (just stereotypes!): -a little bossy -a little self-centered -always on an imaginary stage etc. Hard to describe (help me, Lori!), but many of the Leos I know share these characteristics. (They have a lot of good features, too, they're just less obvious.)
Please keep in mind that I'm a Taurus and that I'm supposed to have my troubles with Leos :)
You got me intrigued ;)
Couldn't let you get away with an intriguing point like that & not investigate it further ;)
Seriously though, I barely know anything about horoscopes & things so I was just wondering what acting Leo-ish actually entailed...now I'm going to be all self-conscious as to whether I'm being overly Leo-ish, lol!
Hey!
As a gemini I happen to think those are endearing characteristics! ;)
"call me old fashioned but I prefer feminism that leaves a little something to the imagination!"
The Closer
Buffy & The Borg...
I love that you just throw in random BtVS and Star Trek references to make your points... haha. Nothing adds colour to a vlog like Buffy and the Borg...

Question for Lori
Crapstick Jungle!!
Ok so after watching your vlog
for the tenth time,I downloaded a copy of the Lipstick Jungle pilot. Now Sarah, dont get the impression I dont trust your judgement, I do, its just that well I live in the UK and it will probably be a long time before it makes it over here, and I wanted to see what all the
rantingfuss was about. So now I've watched it and it's kinda like I have a bad taste in my mouth. They do say curiosity killed the cat but well I always thought being curious was a good thing....
I actually didn't think it could be as bad as it was, and the over-acting thing you talked about drove me crazy, I really felt sorry for Kim Raver having to be in the middle of it all (well, as sorry as you can be for someone who makes out with a member of the undead.. no wait, didn't Buffy do that... a lot!!)
I know I shouldn't have been surprised given your reaction to it but it annoys me that for a show that has the tag line of women who "aren't looking for Mr. Big, they are Mr. Big", it seems that they are only gonna be happy if they are with the guy they want. Of course this could be a big assumption of mine as granted, I have only seen one episode, but to be fair I thought that was fairly obvious from just watching the trailer you posted.
Ok so now I am asking myself why, after watching the trailer and your vlog, I wasted my time on this but well its done now and I wont get that time back so I need to move on!!
xx
P.S, the one and only saving grace in my eyes, was that I got to hear a Kelly Clarkson song near the end. I kinda saw that as my treat for having to sit through the crap!
Tidbits of info
Thank you for all cool comments!
Of course, I stress about what Ashley's going to do with her inheritance! When I think about her windfall, my mind gets lost in the quagmire of inheritance and state taxes, which is a HUGE percentage! My back of the envelope estimate on the taxes that Ashley may owe? Ashley should assume she'll have pay up to 40% in taxes, leaving her only $7.5 million to play with. Not much money when you remember she's only 17/18 years old.
For those of you interested in finances, here are some quick tips: never max out your credit cards, pay them off every month, build up and protect your credit score, build a savings for at least six months of living expenses, and be as debt free as possible so you have choices when you want to change jobs or careers. It's easy to get stuck in a job because of a good salary. Having little debt gives you financial freedom to pursue your dream job. :)
Other random factoids: my birthday is in May 15. Best business schools? I recommend reading BusinessWeek.com, Forbes.com, and especially USNews.com's top business schools lists.
When I applied for my graduate program, I created a short list of top schools for my field and identified other factors that were important to me. Then I prioritized the schools based on the city I wanted to be in for grad school. Then I just waited to see who accepted me, then picked the school that fit my criteria.
Thanks again to viewing "She Made Me Watch This!"
This is excellent.
Excellent
You make some really good points.
I myself never spent money that i don't have. I never buy something on credit. Whenever there is a big investment, like a car, I pay it cash. I mean it sounds trivial. Though it seems to be forgotten by many.
I see that this a big danger. Because often I see friends struggle, because half of their salaries is already gone the next month and then they struggle and at the end of the month they are in debt again and again.
6 months emergency money...where to stash
LA is our nex Suze Orman
Listen to LA, she knows her stuff! I think we found our next Suze Orman!
spangs...
yea about that. i totally agree. Her bangs are GOD awful! I saw a picture of the actress who plays her with OUT bangs, and she looks sooo much cuter and way better. who thought of those things on her head? and who the hell named her Carmen? that's nuts.
Great blog once again! i'm definitely tuning in next time!
Great!
