Responding to requests by readers Bex and FilmGrrl, Lori and I discuss Life (NBC), Pushing Daisies (ABC) and Dirty Sexy Money (ABC), plus Blood Ties, the third-season debut episode of Dante's Cove (here) and the new MTV drama series Kaya, debuting next week, about a teenage girl dealing with the unexpected pressures of fame when she becomes a big pop star. I also throw in a plea for you to watch Friday Night Lights (NBC). This week’s “Best Lesbian Couple That Isn’t” designation is easily won by Serena and Blair from Gossip Girl (The CW), and Lori rolls out the new "She's Hot" bunny for Blake Lively. I can't say I disagree.

Yay for a new
Yay for a new episode!!!!
Excellent job as always.
Sarah, its Connie Britton not Brisco! LOL
Also, Kaya sounds alot like Instant Star. *shrug* I dont watch either.
Connie Britton
I remembered that the minute I started editing the video, but then it was too late! :) Ah, well, I've never been that great with names. Or dates. Or the periodic table of elements. But I can vague things up like nobody's business!
The periodic table?
You can ask me! Yes, I know I know... I'm a science geek. *sigh*
Blake Lively?! Please - it
Blake Lively?! Please - it is totally ALL about Leighton Meester. :P
Glad to hear they're keeping the subtext going. :)
Melissa Etheridge bunny to you guys too!
Thanks! Great vlog! Very entertaining and got to say agree on "blood ties", "life" and "pushing daisies".
Love the first two and "pushing daisies " I am still liking more each week. It's surreal but great lines and good acting! I mean, "herbal crack house"? That's a great line!
"call me old fashioned but I prefer feminism that leaves a little something to the imagination!"
Blake Lively *swoon*
I totally agree with Lori, Blake is the new IT girl, she's just got an amazing charisma and I'm totally crushing on her.
Also, Lori, are you like being sponsored by Adidas ;) what's with the cap and jacket...
I really liked LIfe, it's one of my favorite new shows this season. It's got fantastic stories and the characters are just superb. The casting on that show is just spot on! I love it.
Pushing Daisies... you guys are right, it's a bit too quirky for its own good... sometimes, but I still think it's above like 95% of what's on television so I hope it stays on air. But it does look like they're spending a LOT of money on special effects and such, it seems like a fairly expensive show to produce and yet, are the ratings okay? I haven't heard anything...
Gossip Girl ... oh the ho!yay is killing me, killing me! :D
Adidas hat for bad hair days
Busted! Yes, I love Adidas, but they're not sponsoring us (I wish!). In this case, it was purely functional — I only had four hours sleep, and I didn't have time to take a shower before filming this vlog. :(
Glad to read you agree about with us about Blake Lively. I forgot to mention that Ali Larter is also on my “favorite blondes in Hollywood” short list. :)
i think the hat suits you! I
i think the hat suits you! I like it, you look great :-)
Sorry i can't say anything about the shows, because I can't watch them in germany....
heroes
Oh yes I'm so excited for Kristen's return and was hugely excited for the huge promo she got. It makes me wonder how many just have no clue who she is though. But just hearing her on Gossip Girl hasn't quite been enough. BTW Season 3 of Veronica Mars drops Tuesday.
Loving Dirty Sexy Money as well, I think it's my favourite new show of the season.
Blake Lively
blake lively
sure thinggg lori, though I'm just more partial to brunettes myself. :-P i'm with you on ali larter though. :)
Sarah, awesome shirt!
omg, inbd
i think life is great too!
i think life is great too! the first episode was stunningly good, the cinematography was great, the writing...the other episodes have been good but not as incredible, i really think sarah shahi was grown as an actress, i mean maybe she was always this good, but i feel like she seems more mature,
i love friday night lights too and all my friends thinkit is weird that i like it!
lori, you should make t-shirts for you and sarah on zazzle and maybe some of the bunnies!!
Herstory
Lori, I'm loving the Adidas gear. Hats suits you very well ;) And Sarah your shirt is awesome (Herstory lol)
It is always a great pleasure watching you two even though I watch none of the shows you're talking about, not that I don't want to watch Dante's Cove, it doesn't play here :(
I want to see Bennett being a bad ass too!
blood ties
vampire guy's name is Henry.. Fitzroy i believe.. if my memory serves me right .. something about being the son of one of the King Henry's .. mike is the cop played by the guy that played gay deputy doug on dawsons creek...
bottom line... blood ties.. rocks my fricken socks off!.. loving it!
Model through it!
Loved the outtakes for this week.
I'm with Lori on everything except Gossip Girl, but only because I haven't seen it. I only get here! in the pay per view on demand($4 per episode) so no Jill on Dante's Cove for me.
"Bad jokes are us, ur me."
Lori's Business Advice
What the heck? No words to live by from Lori regarding the business world? The ONLY reason I tune in is for the weekly "women in business" lesson! Just teasing.. as usual, another great vlog!
Jill Action Figure
GOSSIP GIRL!! I totally
GOSSIP GIRL!! I totally agree with everything said about Gossip Girl this show totally rocks! I forgot about Blood Ties good thing my Tivo didn't forgot lol Pushing Up Daisies is just to dull for me but it is something to watch so I watch it. LIFE I really like this show, but I feel it starting to get old and really show like this couldn't last more then 2 seasons.
-Nathiest
My mentors
yes that's right, that's what you are to me!! and for numerous reasons : you are fricking funny, entertaining, smart, beautiful, and not to forget you also have this awesome chemistry you are always speaking about for girls on tv, seeing you two together ranting is just great.
I'm thinking about creating a bunny for you (sadly i'm useless with everything concerning art... but I can describe it with a mathematical formula... youhou ;-)) and my bunny would have a big sunshine behind it because you are a big hot (in every senses of the term) shiny ray of sunshine!!
ok that was it, now i'm going to check gossip girl, i didn't want to do that but my mentors say it's good plus a she's hot bunny soooo let's go and see!
Thx again! (and grrrreat outfit Lori I love adidas and it suits you just fine!)
"I'm gonna give you all a nice, fun, normal evening even if I have to kill every person on the face of the Earth to do it"
loved it!

Gossip Girl
Weekly vlog about "Gossip Girl"
It's a great idea, tight! Unfortunately, Lori and I can barely keep up with the vlogs we're already doing, and no one else on the AfterEllen.com staff can take it on, either (as a vlog or a written recap).
But if any motivated AfterEllen.com readers would like to grab a friend or two and do a weekly vlog about Gossip Girls, let me know!
:)
...love this
Pushing Daisies
Couldn't Kristin's character have been in love with Chuck ? That would have been a threat to the relationship between Chuck (that's her name, right...?) and the pie-maker, and I'm sure it would have been a lot more interesting than what we have now.
Also, re: daises, when do we get to see the aunts again? They were in the first episode, and in the promo pics, but nothing since then. Does anybody know why?
The Aunts
Oops. I forgot that I
Gossip Girl
Have I mentioned how much I hate being back in Mexico?
well I do...I have to wait for the second season of Heroes to begin who knows when and it pretty much sucks...the only thing that comforts me a little is that Gossip Girl is starting in november, I watched the pilot on itunes and I liked it a lot so I'm looking forward to catch up in november...and I would pick Blair b4 Serena, I think it is because I thought Blake Lively was kinda awkward looking when I first saw her on The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants (there's something about her mouth expressions) but who knows maybe I just need to get used to her, I might change my mind :P
ladies, always a pleasure watching y'all :)
loved the outtake, so funny ;)
"i don't suffer from insanity...i enjoy every minute of it"
Thanks....
for another great episode (and the shout-out), ladies. I agree with your take on Life and Pushing Daisies. With the latter, I want to really like it, but for some reason, its quirkiness, or attempts at it, don't pull me in like other shows have (i.e. Twin Peaks, Gilmore Girls, BtVS).
You have both convinced me to check out Blood Ties. Just another show on Friday I'll have to DVR. (Speaking of Friday night tv, Women's Murder Club did again this week with too much emphasis on the characters' personal relationships.)
Here Network needs to put Dante's Cove on ITunes. Does anyone know how we can see the episodes if we cannot get the cable station?
I agree with you...
agreeing with Sarah and Lori about Life and Pushing Daisies. :)
I watched Life to see our former The L Word woman and stayed for the storylines and characters. Plus the male lead pulled me in because I realized I had seen him do great work in Band of Brothers.
Plus I agree about wanting to like Pushing Daisies more than I do...although Kristin Chenoweth starting and stopping singing "Hopelessly Devoted To You" was priceless!
I stopped watching Blood Ties due to the monster teddy bear eppie so it is good news to hear it is beyond that. I didn't know the 2nd season started so I will give it another try.
And Gossip Girl...so far I have had no interest in watching...but Sarah and Lori make it sound quite tempting...maybe even to try to watch one eppie...hmmmm...I do like the idea of a vlog recap of the show though.
Lastly...Dante's Cove...have no way to get here! thru my cable provider even if I wanted to spend the extra money...and it seems there is no way to watch it online either. That is just so not fair. :(
SMMWT Thoughts
I was just reviewing my TV viewing schedule from early in the fall and, sadly, the only two new shows that I'm determined to keep watching are Pushing Daisies and Life. I had high hopes for others, but alas...
I still like Pushing Daisies--the writing's brilliant and the visuals are just stunning--but I do find it too quirky at some points. I love Lee Pace and Anna Friel in the lead roles, but the show's really bolstered by an incredible supporting cast, including Chi McBride and Kristen Chenoweth. I'm curious, though, if anyone thought that Chenoweth's singing came a little too early in the series? I mean, it seems to me like that's a trump card for the series...something that you pull out during sweeps...not in the second/third episode.
I fully admit to having watched Life initially just because Sarah Shahi's on it, but now I'm pleasantly hooked. I worried initially that the female/eccentric male cop pairing would retread what we've already seen on Monk and Law & Order: CI, but Life's really managed to forge its own path.
The second episode of Women's Murder Club convinced me to take the show off my Tivo season pass, so I may replace it with Friday Night Lights.
Maybe you'll rant about this on Monday, but I'm curious to know what you both thought of this week's episode of Grey's Anatomy, particularly that moment in the hall between Callie and Izzie.
Friday night lights.
Piegons
Love Blake Lively,
Love Blake Lively, especially in the Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants. Everyone knows footballers are kind of gay. Plus, she's related to Eric Lively (creepy roommate Mark on season 2 of the L Word), which brings her one degree closer to loads of gay women. All she needs now is a little push to actually play gay.
However, I'm erring on the side of caution when it comes to watching Gossip Girl, because it is too much like my school for me to be completely comfortable with it. Rich kids? Check. Backstabbing? Check. Sex and drinking? Check. Secret cliques/groups? Check. Maybe I'll catch reruns, but it doesn't sound like something I would be into.
I also agree with pecola that Kristin's singing came a little to early in the season. I hope this doesn't mean that there will be no future singing. I love me some Chenoweth.
Blair and Serena
Blair and Serena's friendship
I totaly agree with you.
Not that I wouldn't like to see them together, but those kind of friendships do exist and there is no need of sexual utlerior motives to explain it. By the way, I just LLLLLLUUUUUVVVVVV that show.
Lori, I agree with you regarding Blake, that girl is just SSMMOKING !!!! I have to say that I'm more attracted to brunette (and redhead), but some blondes just have the IT factor, and Blake is now in my list just as Ali L. and Scarlette J.
And if I haven't said it before, Sarah and Lori, I <3 U.
I see your point, although I
I see your point, although I tend to think that greater acknowledgment of homosexuality will pretty much have the consequence of calling a lot of types affection between members of the same sex into question more than it previously was (for instance, the romantic friendships between women that were once regarded as nothing terribly unusual now strike us as really, really gay). Maybe that's not such a good thing, but it won't make me stop hoping for widespread acceptance of queers. I kind of feel the same way about reading things into TV character's relationships.
And, hey, maybe it would be different if we had actual lesbian TV couples to analyze. But, for the most part, we really, really don't. So, if we want to see representations of women in love on TV, we pretty much have to resort to subtextual readings. Close friendships and extreme rivalries tend to be ripest for this kind of analysis. It doesn't mean we believes that all best friends are doin' it or that people never just hate each other. It's just...well, desperation. Plus, it's fun to find alternate meanings and occasionally misconstrue texts :)
Also, Blair and Serena do seem to have a level of obsession with each other that I don't have with ANY of my close female friends. And Sarah and Jaime from Bionic Woman have WAY more chemistry with each other than they do with anyone else on the show. So I don't think anyone's going too far out on a limb by suggesting that there's a lot of potentially sapphic material there.
Re: Blair and Serena
I guess I can understand the whole, “we’ll take what we can get” argument at this point, being that there are hardly any regular lesbian/bisexual characters on television these days. However, it’s amazing to me, since you brought it up, how the romantic friendships of the past ceased to exist because of the incredible assumption that these friendships were almost always some form of latent homosexuality. This came about because of studies that were done in Germany near the turn of the 20th century, in particular, Krafft-Ebing’s Psychopathia Sexualis. And now, due in large part to these same studies, our culture has become overly-sexualized/privatized, to the point where there’s an inherent disbelief of any truly platonic friendship.
In high school, I had what you might call a romantic friendship. I wouldn’t even want to begin to try to explain the depth of this relationship to you all, because one… I feel I wouldn’t even do justice to it, and two… there are no words for the kind of relationship that I had with her. Now, fast forward to age 20, and through circumstances slightly beyond our control, we didn’t see each other as much as we had before. At that time, I actually figured out finally, that I was gay. But it wasn’t until someone else mentioned it to me, that I even thought about her and my sexuality in the same vein. Until that point, the possibility of that ever happening, would never have even crossed my mind. In fact, it feels kind of weird even typing it out right now.
So, why am I even boring you with this entire story? I have racked my brain about this very subject, in relation to the romantic friendships of the past, and what I came up with are two very reasonable scenarios, both of which are probably true. One, that my relationship with my best friend was about so much more than any kind of sexual experience we might have had, and two… that at seventeen, we were so young and naïve that, the possibility of that happening simply did not exist. She’s straight, and at the time I believed I was, too. It wasn’t something that we denied, or even talked about, it just never came up.
Again, why is this relevant to your response? Because having experienced this firsthand, and knowing what I know about female friendships of the past, I have to believe that these kind of relationships were completely platonic, if not for the simple fact that they didn’t know to take it any further. Now, did lesbian relationships exist under the guise of romantic friendship? Absolutely. But I think it’s safe to say that both types of relationships existed simultaneously, and that it would be wrong to assume, especially in such a romanticized time, that a close friendship between two women was necessarily sexual, simply because of our 21st century filters.
Maybe I’m one of only a few people who feel this way, but I don’t feel comfortable lobbying for two best friends to suddenly drop their heterosexuality and only have eyes for each other, when we need both kinds of relationships to exist in our culture. I mean, think about it, how often does an adolescent friendship get portrayed as well as Blair and Serena’s? Never. Well, almost. Yet, without even thinking about it, people are already hopping on the Blerena/Sair or whatever you want to call it, train – and while I’m sure it’s all fun and games to envision their first hookup or read fanfic into the wee hours of the morning – I think we’re really missing something important by not recognizing Blair and Serena’s friendship: this totally obsessive, dysfunctional, but ultimately loving bond between two young women, who actually happen to be just friends.
If this seems like a rant directed at you, please believe me when I say that it’s not. This is just something that’s been bugging me for a long time, and I guess I finally found a platform to voice my thoughts on the subject.
Blake Lively ROCKS!!!!
I totally totally agree with Lori, and I have to admit that I'm a gossip girl addict. omg. and Serena and Blair, they definitely have chemistry. they're so hot together and cute. Blair looks better than with her boyfriend(i forgot his name............)
and episode 5, I think there was a girl-girl kissing(i dont know who they were, one of Blair's?). ayway I wish Serena and Blair had kissed. that is only complain about gossip girl. haha.
and i gotta say about Blake Lively. OH, MY GOD. she's so cute, so hot, she has a gorgeous blonde hair. She is my new crush.
I love LIFE! BLOOD TIES is
Oh man, I love Blake Lively
=P
Can't comment much on the shows though, but I'm sure once some of these start playing here I'll watch. I'll definitely try to see Dante's Cove =) And Life sounds great.
Thanks!
transition from rock to pop
Rock on.
That being said... Love Lori's outfit and love Sarah's shirt and I just all around love listening to you guys. Thanks again for the laughs :) Not that I watch any of these shows... :(
My eyes, my eyes...
The girl from Kaya
Danielle Savre, the girl from Kaya, was on Heroes.. as bitchy cheerleader Jackie, who got her head sliced open by Sylar ;-) She's cute.
I love Life and Pushing Daisies, too! And Blood Ties is just amazingly well done.. the writing as well as the acting are superb.
Can't wait for Kristen Bell's character to be on Heroes! =)
Lori is...

Wasn't expecting this...
For me the funny thing about Gossip Girl is that I started watching it simply for the sake of this teen soap opera opinion column that i host for my high school newspaper. and i expected it to suck big time. but then it comes on and blaire and serena are this close to touching each other and i'm just like "I"M SOLD!" I actually mentioned the innuendo in my column and my editor frowned upon it, but I totally talked him down with threats.
it was fun.
anyways I LOVE GOSSIP GIRL. Though I would never in my life pick up one of the books. Thanks for another great vlog Sarah and Lori.
