SHE MADE ME WATCH THIS! October 13, 2007

In this week's episode of She Made Me Watch This!, Lori and I attempt to answer some of the great questions of our era, including:

Plus, Lori rants this time — twice! — complete with flailing of arms and strongly-worded declarative sentences. See what I live with, people? It's hard to get a word in edge-wise!

    Nice graphic tees!

The theme music is so taste.

Sarah, I too compare everything to Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Which is really unfair to all the other shows out there because it is such an impossible standard.

I haven't seen Moonlight but, "A vampire who's a private investigator and is in love with a mortal and who does good" is the exact plot of Angel...so...

Abbie Carmicheal/Olivia Benson is sort of my unofficial Law and Order OTP even though its virtually inexistent both canonically and in fandom. That being said, which character do I like better? Probably Olivia. Which actress do I like better? Probably Angie (her voice...she could read me a VCR programming guide and I'd swoon). They're both fabulous women and actresses and I'm excited for Angie's new show.

These vlogs are great and you guys are adorable (is that an appropriate word for adult women?) together. Keep up the good work.

    I find myself comparing

I find myself comparing everything to Buffy also and find that at times I completely rule out the validity of a vampire movie (Underworld) because it in no way complies with the Jossian universe.  I was the same way when Dark Angel came out and I automatically hated the show because Jessica Alba won the Emmy that year instead of SMG after their first run and then the following year James Cameron decided to make the show just like BUffy with all the demon like people, (it got canceled).   I know it's rather unfair of me.

Hey was that Conner from Angel in that new Mad men series?  Anyone?

    Best lesbian couple that isn't

    Sarah and Jamie.

I actually liked this episode of Bionic Woman. The sister wasn't annoying and the episode seem to flow better.I loved the scene where Jamie and her sister were dancing in the apartment. It gave me Awwww feeling. I personally think Michelle Ryan did a lot better in this episode and she is growing on me. But then again I have a thing for girls with blue eyes and brown hair. I think she could carry the show if Sarah left.

The interaction between Jamie and Sarah was very Buffy/Faith, which I don't think is really lesbian. It is if you have your lesbian goggles on and are looking for it, but otherwise it's just two characters that handle their new abilities differently. Don't get me wrong I can queer the text with the best of them...but when Sarah was going to kill the sister it seem more of a desperate attempt to get Jamie to save her life. That's what I think it was written as...but with my lesbian goggles back on it is totally a jilted lover scene.

    Great work!

The segment on best lesbian couple that isn't a couple and the segment on most depressing was brilliant. Please keep on ranting because you're rants are great.

When it comes to choosing the the best couple I cast my vote on Meredith and Christina. They really behave as if they have been together for years and reminds me quite a lot of how my grandparents interacted with each other.

i don't get to see any of the shows that you talk about except for greys anatomy, but i still love to hear you rant :-)

    Hmm...

...Jamie Sommers and Sarah Corvus on Bionic Woman or Cristina and Meredith on Grey's? That's a tough one. I'm inclined to say Cristina and Meredith, simply because their relationship makes Meredith bearable for me, but if the chemistry between Jamie Sommers and Sarah Corvus is so palpable that I can't even stand to watch the show without them together, that's got to mean something. So my vote goes to Bionic Woman.

I'm in total agreement with you on Private Practice. Addison, go back to Seattle...and this time: bring an umbrella.

Watching Mad Men is like listening to Radiohead's Kid A on repeat. I try not to watch it when I'm in a bad mood or when there are sharp objects around.

If you haven't seen the new episode of Degrassi, here's my advice: DON'T WATCH IT! Do yourself a favor and just live in the bliss of the Season 6 ending. It's much better that way.

    Another great vlog!

Best Lesbian Couple and Women's Murder Club

Sarah and Jamie without a doubt...and I worry for that show if Katee Sackhoff ceases to be on it. The only redeeming character on Bionic Woman is Sarah Corvus...she's the only one that seems to show any depth or emotion that I find believable. I am still trying to deal with the disappointment that is the remake of Bionic Woman...I hope the one redeeming quality (Sarah Corvus) sticks around.

As for Women's Murder Club...did I miss something? I found it to be weak and unrealistic (despite my love for Angie Harmon and Laura Harris), and I thought the women came across as flighty. I suppose I was hoping for a more stronger, Mariska Hargitay-esque type of character. Oh well.

I totally agree on the Mad Men...why would women want to walk down that road again!?? It's bad enough it actually was, what is to be gained by reliving it!? How about doing a show about the women's movement that fought the oppression, sexism, and inequality? Sigh.

Loving the She Made Me Watch This...can't wait for next week!

    Women's Murder Club

We watched the first episode of Women's Murder Club last night after we shot this vlog, and were surprised to find it was completely different from the pilot we saw and reviewed — and not in a good way. The show is still interesting — if for no other reason than it's a show about four women that doesn't revolve around sex and relationships, for a change — but the characters have definitely been weakened from how they were portrayed in the pilot. But we're going to save that rant for our next episode of SMMMWT. :)

Updated to add: see our rant about Women's Murder Club in the first edition of our new weekly vlog Who Thought THAT Was a Good Idea?

    Phew!

Oh good...I was worried I had missed the point or something, which was sad since I had so been looking forward to that show after your initial review awhile back. Disappointing indeed...perhaps it will get better?! Hmm.

I shall await the rant on the next SMMMWT!

    That's good to hear --

I, too, was really surprised that you both like this show enough to recommend it. Wife and I watched it because we're big fans of Angie Harmon, and would love it if she could ever find another show that worked as well for her as L&O did! But that's another story.

What I found depressing about Women's Murder Club was that all of the women had exactly the same personality. There was little difference between them, other than their professions and their appearance (one brunette, one blond, one Black). Witty repartee was the only way they talked to each other on a personal level, and almost the only way they talked to anyone else, too. Ugh. Boring. Unrealistic. And boring.

The other issue I took with it was that the case was nearly secondary to the constant talk of sex and men. And the too tight shirts with cleavage is getting to be a bit much for me, but, again, another story. It was a little disconcerting to have a dead body smashed into the roof of a car 10 yards away while the three (professional) women are bantering about some guy who called one of them and OOOH is she going to call him back and why did he call, and frankly... I didn't care. Not because I'm a lesbian ;-), but because I honestly did not care. I cared about the dead body and why the woman had called the detective prior to her taking a sail out the window.

Ugh. Oh, and a major disappointment.

    Jamie and Sarah

I vote for Jamie and Sarah. The first two episodes of Bionic Woman were okay but I really like the last one. But I'm not sure if I'll watch it if the Sarah Corvus storyline is over.

Addison should go back to Seattle. Her character has changed so much. Sometimes I even forget that Private Practice is a about her.

I'll have to vote for Jamie

I'll have to vote for Jamie and Sarah too. They are just the best lesbian couple that wasn't. I thought it was kinda cute when Sarah thought Jamie would trust her and just go with her. I also have to agree that the show is disappointing. I would have expected better from David Eick.

About Degrassi: The writers have managed to break up Palex in the 2nd episode of the new season (does this qualify as the teenage version of "lesbian death"?) and fans are speculating that this was the last epi for Deanna Casaluce (Alex). I should hope not!

sadly, I want to see Mad Men now

I feel like I have to see Mad Men now. My mom actually worked as a girl-Friday for NYC advertising execs in the 60s, and while she's talked about it a bit, I had no idea the social climate was quite that shitty for women. Thanks for the tip.

And this week's Degrassi was an embarrassment. It was as if the second half of Season 6 had never taken place.

    lustt's picture

I have to agree with Lori...

I'd have to say Cristina and Meredith on Gray's. They're just too cute. It's like they actually have been together for forever, although Jamie and Sarah have amazing chemistry.

Angie Harmon gets my vote although Mariska's character should come out. It's time =). I've always been fond of Angie H. for some reason. Is it dark hair? Is it the leather jacket? I dunno! lol

I also caught Degrassi last night, and I was, disappointed, to say the least. Paige was being Paige again. She, again couldn't give Alex a break. Too self absorbed, that Paige. She broke it off with Alex, and I think Palex is dead. Rumor has it that Deanna Casaluce isn't coming back. I wouldn't be surprised if she didn't but what will become of Paige? To be honest i don't really care. Alex should get her own spin-off show or something.

Oh and btw, that intro still gets me every time. Great vblog, ladies.

    Moonlight

Moonlight just seems to be a not as good rehash of Forever Knight, and I have Forever Knight on my DVD shelves so...

While I no longer watch Grey's, I refuse to choose a best lesbian couple that isn't. They are at too different of stages in their relationships.

"Bad jokes are us, ur me."

    Best couple

for me is Jamie/Sarah on Bionic Woman. My girlfriend and I watched the last episode together and we had quite the same feeling about the dialogue between those two.

Best line for me was the daughter's "Is she a lesbian?". That was classic, and we both laughed out loud because it was exactly what we had thought the first time Ruth came on screen.

As for the Angie/Mariska, that's a tough one for me, too, but once Sara said Anggie was a Republican it pretty much left me no choice. Mariska it is :).

    tlm7ea's picture

I'm casting my vote for Sarah and Jaime

Sarah and Jaime are the best lesbian couple that wasn't.  My screen crackles every time they're on it together, and I've found myself re-watching all of their scenes multiple times.  My tv is going to blow up at this rate.

I hope they give Katee Sackhoff a longer contract, not only does she make the show, but Battlestar is ending next year and I NEED to keep seeing her in something.  I don't care what.  She could wear a garbage bag while reading the phone book and I'd still watch it.  My Katee love is limitless.

    best couple..

that's a tough one. christina is the character i would vote most likely to date a woman, but the jaime/sarah tension is undeniable. if they would keep katee sackhoff on the show then i would vote for jaime/sarah, but since i doubt they would be that smart- my vote goes to christina/meredith.

Best Lesbian Couple and Mariska Hargitay

Well, I don't exactly watch Grey's Anatomy, so I'm not familiar with Christina and Merideth, which might make my vote void, but I agree with Sarah about uh, 'Sarah' and Jamie on Bionic Woman. This week's episode, well it was just so gay, and well this has nothing to do with them emotionally, but I kind of think that being Bionic with the whole extra strength and all that, maybe Sarah and Jamie are the only people that can physically handle each other. My basis is for what happened to the guy Jamie barely did anything to in the bathroom, where she accidentally broke his ribs. I also think it would suck if Sarah leaves the show, but I think I would hang on for Ruth, still don't know much about her, but she interests me for some reason.

As for Mariska Hargitay or Angie Harmon, come on Sarah, it's a no-brainer, Mariska Hargitay of course.:D Bias aside, I think they are both amazing women and I can see how that was hard. And maybe it might be me reading too much Olivia Benson/Alex Cabot (even though Stephanie March left the show, I still believe in this paring) fanfiction, but I think Olivia and her partner Elliot are a little too sibling like to think of them in a romantic sense, and I think it would be amazing if Olivia did come out, I mean who's she fooling with that haircut? ;D

    Best Lesbian Couple That Isn't

For "Best Lesbian Couple that Isn't," I would have to vote for Sarah and Jaime from Bionic Woman. They have a lot more chemistry, in my opinion, than Meredith and Christina (although, Meredith and Christina did go on Christina's honeymoon together).

I was a little disappointed with Women's Murder Club. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that it gets better, but I doubt I'll be staying home on Fridays to watch it. Degrassi was also a little bit disappointing. I guess it's too much to ask for at least one or two episodes about their relationship where they don't either get (back) together or break up (again).

    YOU TWO

Are So Cute! and funny =) My vote is for Sarah and jamie although Ive only seen one episode I can tell they "want" each other. I dont see how mer and christina act like a couple, I guess its because me and my best friend act exactly like them...Im gay, shes not (although she wishes she was) BUT!!!!!!!!! HOW DID YOU NOT SAY SERENA AND BLAIR FROM GOSSIP GIRL!?!?! Everytime I watch them together i feel a big makeout session about to go on between them....but ofcourse it never happens. Also my fav show is Grey's Anatomy....and decided not to watch private practice in hopes that it gets cancelled and addison gets her job back at seattle grace. I miss her on there! Anyway Im done. You ladies are AWESOME!

    gossip girl

I agree 100%. I just fast forward from one scene of theirs to the next, cause the rest of the show kinda blows.
    littlemisscloudshine's picture

    re: gossip girl

I know! I keep expecting Serena and Blair to start making out. In the books there was def a vibe between them--- it was mentioned that they made out before Serena left town, and that was part of the reason Blair was so uncomfortable around her. It would be awesome if they brought that into the TV show! Also, I really want them to bring on Vanessa from the books, who, while not a lesbian, does have a shaved head, which would rock.
    Phyz's picture

    Best Lesbian Couple That Isn't...

I am terribly biased because I am in love with Battlestar Galactica, but I have to give it up to Sarah/Jaime on Bionic Woman.  True, the show is kinda crappy as of right now and seriously needs to redeem itself without Katee Sackhoff, but there is still hope that they can finagle Sarah Corvus back into the storyline somehow later on.  Good call on the Buffy/Faith and Jaime/Sarah comparison!
    silence91's picture

    my 2 cents

I really enjoy the vlogs on this site. They're all getting so professional and better every week.

Can't comment on the non-lesbian couples. I got the first season of Grey's on DVD and I liked it. It seemed fresh but then I watched the next episodes on TV and after a few shows I couldn't take the whiny stuff anymore. I'm more of a House fan which, sadly, doesn't have any (even remotely) lesbian characters on them. And the Bionic Woman hasn't reached my part of the old world yet.

The Angie Harmon/Mariska Hargitay question: I must say, Angie Harmon. I can put politics aside for a short time. In the nineties, I even watched the short-lived Baywatch Nights because of her. Imagine lasting through Hasselhoff's crap... And at that time I didn't even suspect I could be gay. (Despite my love for reruns of Charlie's Angels and Cagney & Lacey etc.) Pretty dense, huh?

The Mad Men show sounds like something that should be shown to young (and old) women who don't appreciate what women's lib has done for us. There are plenty of those out there... And it can remind us that there are still areas in the world where - forty plus years later - women aren't able to even go to work. I know that that's probably not the aim of the show but even though it might make your skin crawl it sure sounds like it might make us appreciate what opportunities and liberties we have today. My mom always says I was born too late (because of my taste in music - I love the oldies) but I'm glad I was and didn't have to live as a woman (and especially as a lesbian) in the fifties or sixties.

Oh yeah, I saw that Tila Tequila show on the MTV site. That seems all phony to me. Sorry, but who honestly thinks to find love on a reality show? Who, in this day and age, is so naive as to believe that the private happiness of a contestant could be the main concern of a tv show? I watched this just because I wanted to know what all your vlogs are talking about but it's really offensive in more than just one way. The men are pretty much all stereotypical cave men (that cowboy hat sporting blond guy is supposed to be an elementary school teacher - do you really want your children educated by him?). And I know that my expectations are way out there if I want to see at least one sensible guy. And this is just so predictably aimed at conflict (which seems to be a directive with reality tv) that I really don't want to see more of this.

Sorry about the rather lengthy comment. But you tackle so many topics. So it's really your fault. ;o) Thanks for letting me vent.

Big Old Bionic Woman Casting Spoiler

Katee Sackhoff will be on abou 5 or 6 out of 13 episodes of Bionic Woman. If the show gets renewed for a second season, she is contracted to become a regular. So there won't be a tragic faux-lesbian ending...maybe.
    moviegrl's picture

    catching up

I say Sarah and Jamie all the way. If Sackhoff leaves Bionic Woman its going to suck all the tension out of the show.....but if above is right that should hold onto some viewers.

A Shot at Love With Tila Tequila....I didn't watch the show but 1.8 million supposedly did. I don't want to watch it. Its a cheap ploy for viewers but I'm sure curiosity will get me when its played for the millionth time late night on msmeev.

Private Practice sucks. I feel bad for the wasted talent on that show.

Reaper has had three episodes of cookie cutter plot. It needs to diversify.

Womens Murder Club.....what a disappointment. The first 10 minutes weren't bad but after that I lost interest.

Damages remains my fav show. Although for some reason Greys seems to be stepping up this season. Mainly without Dr. Burke the shows is more watchable. The Christina and Meredith scenes are BFF cute.

What about Pushing Daisies? I'd say less voice overs stat.

    MAD MEN: UGH

Thank you for pointing out how difficult it is to watch this brilliant tv show. I COMPLETELY agree with your assessment. It's well-acted, directed, designed, dramaturged. It has the complete package. Unfortunately, it's a great show that is historically accurate around a period of time I don't want to revisit. I wasn't alive in the 60s (my mom had just been born, honestly, and my dad was barely a few years old), but I sat down and watched three episodes with my dad and just couldn't tolerate it. It might have been my women's college education, but it made me sick to watch these poor women (the characters, not the actresses -because the actresses are AWESOME). I just couldn't take it.

Are y'all still watching Life? Opinions on staying power? Pushing Daisies' and its staying power?

[And I love Blood Ties, so thanks for mentioning it! I just started reading the books by Tanya Huff, and they make me so happy. The TV show has Christina Cox, and there are very few things that are as amazing as her playing Vicki Nelson]

    not a clue...

well I don't really know who to pick coz I don't get to watch Bionic Woman, it's not out yet over here, and I couldn't just pick Christina and Meredith coz it reminds me of me and my best friend, so that would be a little awkward, don't cha think? ...not that you are wondering, but I would be more like Christina but not as mean, I do have a nice side :P

and I would pick Monica too coz I'm like her, lots of rules and well I'm an organized sorta clean freak :S

I'm happy to see I'm not the only one who feels this way! I'll watch Katee Sackhoff in anything. Make her an intriguing character who's fun to watch and it's even better! I wouldn't pick Sarah Corvus over Kara Thrace, but with BSG ending, I don't really have to! I hope Bionic Woman can stick around long enough for season 2. Sarah and Jaime remind me a little bit of Xena and Callisto with all the twisted interconnected stuff. And the chemistry. Will Anthros had as much charm as Perdicus did...

I'm still watching and enjoying Life. It's nice that Sarah Shahi is good in it! I'm okay that they've dropped the whole addict in recovery thing because I don't think she needs it to be interesting.

Lori, I don't know if you like reading about vampires as well as watching them, but Kelley Armstrong has some fantastic characters in her books. Granted, the vampires are a little peripheral, but they're there. http://www.kelleyarmstrong.com/ I don't remember any queer characters (booo!), but the women are still very interesting. Haunted is one of the most creative "supernatural" stories I've read. Um, she also has some slightly graphic heterosexual sex in them, if that's an issue for anyone. The latest book really made me blush, holy moly!

Jamie and Sarah Get My Vote

First i would like to start off by saying that the two of you are so cute together and your blogs are always so funny....I look forward to Saturday so i can read your blog....

So I would have to say that my favorite lesbian couple that isnt would definatly have to be Jamie Sommers and Sarah Corvus..there is so much tention between the two of them....I think you are right Sarah,  that their is some lesbian writer behind the scenes just laughing away....I also agree that the show isnt the same when Sarah isnt on it so I hope they keep her on the show..

Thanks for another wonderfull episode of She Made Me Watch This....

    Too many shows...

...too little time. I agree with Sarah about Bionic Woman - without Katee, the show would be rather uneventful.

When did Friday night become "must see tv" all of a sudden? Degrassi, Women's Murder Club, and I need to plug Numb3rs (love the nerd angle to this show). Yes, it's been on for a while, but it is still a great show and a fairly good follow-up to Women's Murder club (which will hopefully get better).

Any thoughts on Dirty Sexy Money? Pushing Daisies? Life? And will you guys be previewing Nip/Tuck that debuts on the 30th?

    SMMWT's comment votes

The women's murder club from this writer's perspective sounds great idea for a show.  I wish I had seen the 1st episode then I would pinpoint what was great and not so great about the show. I am glad Angie Harmon is on there b/c she needed to get more acting time in her career.  She's a great actress.

I' too can put aside political titles for a hot womyn.  I could care less who Angie Harmon votes for.

Dang  Mariska or Angie that's like offering chocloate or strawberries...No way I can choose.  I won't. I want  both women .   If you had to twist my arm to choose...  I have a thing for long dark -haired women.I like Mariska's name and her acting is better and more butcher than Angie's. Ok, it would be  Angie Harmon.  She has a 1/2 millisecond edge over Mariska.

I haven't seen Grey's anatomy nor the new show Bionic Woman so I can't judge the best non-lesbian  couple that isn't category.  Sorry.

Keep up the good work  though. Womyn the vlogs are getting more awesome each week.  I like Lori and Sarah's personalities.  Yet, Karman adds more fun to the mix so keep her as your Guestbian. It would be so cool to add Julie Goldman and others like some of the cast of She Said What!? (hint hint)

No question - the chemistry between Michelle Ryan and Katee Sackhoff is undeniable and definitely makes the show worth watching. I wish people should cut Michelle some slack - episode three was GREAT and she is really starting to come into her own. CLASH OF THE ALPHAS

Have to go with Jamie and Sarah on this.  Nothing like watching to alpha females circling each other...getting ready to p*ss on the other woman.  I love that tension and dynamic.

Agreed that Meredith and Christina being the old lesbian couple...and I can only say that because I'm in one of those relationships myself, laughs.  That's why Jamie and Sarah are so fun to watch.  It's like foreplay!

Very funny ladies...I'll be checking this vlog out more often.

    I can't believe I'm voting for

    Meredith and Cristina.

I'm not a big fan of Grey's Anatomy but they are the best kind of couple. You know that they will be there for each other.

Cristina is steadfast and loyal -- and she always has your back -- even if she's rude and stand-offish to the rest of the world. And Meredith I believe, sees the vunerability and heart in scary Cristina.

Sarah and Jaime -- the love is all on Sarah's side of the fence, I'm afraid. One-sided romance are cruising for bruising.
