Ellen wears a weird outfit! Katherine Heigl blames her mom! Tina Fey thanks the gays! Kyra Sedgwick, Glenn Close, and Mary Louise Parker form a gang and offer to jump in anyone who will create more good roles for women on TV! (Where do I sign up?!)
In this very special Emmy's edition of She Made Me Watch This! Lori and I give our take on the night's fashion winners and losers, best acceptance speech, and worst musical number; ask what Joely Fisher and Brad Garrett were thinking with that tasteless banter; and throw in a bonus rant about Fox censoring Sally Field. All this and more below!
She Made Me Watch This! The 2007 Emmys Note: Veoh is currently having technical problems letting us upload this video, so we're putting it in DailyMotion for now. We'll try to upload to Veoh again later today... Submitted by on September 17, 2007 - 2:26pm. |

Samuel says hi ;)
Ask me how much I love this vlog?
I just love how you two are all relax and in the comfort of your own home doing this thing that entertains us every week. Excellent as always.
My favorite speech was also given by Katherine Heigl, the expression on her mother's face when she won and after that speech was so funny and cute.
Quick little anecdote, I was watching the vlog with my 19 month old nephew sitting on my lap and the little guy thought you two were on webcam and kept waving at you saying "hi" and made sweet little faces, acting all shy lol Too cute.
whoa, it's so fancy now,
i'm thinking
Yes, I second that...
...please keep using Dailymotion. Finally Blog watching that is not a frustrating experience...
What I find worse is all
What I find worse is all those actors/actresses and musicians at award ceremonies who shove their believes systems down out throats. "I thank god! ... Thank you Jesus!" blablabla. Can't they thank their whatever god (actually i have never heard a Buddhist, Jew, Hinduist, Wiccan do that) in private? Now that is stupidity!
Making a general statement like this is political? Puhlease... only in a totalitarian or strictly self censored society.
well that's pretty much
Just wondering how that
Just wondering how that statement was "hypocritical" exactly?
And yeah! for being pro censoring an award show! Talk about annoying statements I could do without!
Having said that I personally thought the Sally Field speech was kinda dumb because it was mothers who raised the sons who made the wars, so wouldn't depend on mothers really, to stop the wars. :)
And I thought the whole show was boring from the choice of nominees, to who won, to the show itself! My favourite dresses were Heigl's and Sedgewick"s and Tina Fey's was definitely the best acceptance speech! :)
And thanks guys for doing a vlog on the Emmy awards!
"call me old fashioned but I prefer feminism that leaves a little something to the imagination!"
Because
lol
If that's your story...stick with it, I would say :)
"call me old fashioned but I prefer feminism that leaves a little something to the imagination!"
ok
The Sopranos
It was the best show on TV...not just for the length of its run, but probably ever...people should be talking about it. "The West Wing," which I don't think was as consistently good as "The Sopranos," got similar treatment.
The awards and praise weren't obligatory, they were deserved.
i agree
Agreed.
:)
Wow, that's one hugeass tv, you guys. Can I come live with you? *stares at her miserable excuse for a television* I loved this vlog, great to see you so relaxed in the comfort of your own home. And Sarah? YOU NEED TO RANT MORE! It's fabulous :D
I absolutely love Katie Heigl. She's so amazing and so funny and cute and also, fighting for the right thing. Love her. And I'm SO happy she won.
And by the way, how lesbian are you two? You pretty much loved all the black outfits ;) It's alright, I did too. But Mary-Louise was looking wonderful, as well.
geeeeez
Steve Carrel
Great vlog...
I didn't get a chance to watch the Emmy's, so watching the vlog made up for it.
I love Jenna Fischer, so she gets a pass with that dress she wore. She'll probably always get a pass from me.
I'm not surprised that Fox censored Sally Field's acceptance speech. It's what they do even though they claim to be fair and balanced.
a real bore this year
The show as a whole was just boring this year. Part of the reason is because I watch it every year, so I don't get really excited anymore. But a big part of the reason for it being boring was Ryan Seacrest. It's not that I don't like Ryan, but (as Gob Bluth would say it) Come On! However, seeing Tina win with 30 Rock did make it all worth it.
I'd also like to point out something that pissed me off early on in the broadcast. The joke about Isaiah Washington and then cutting to TR Knight--that was just in really poor taste. Nothing funny about it and so not necessary.
Sara Ramirez
I'd just like to point out that Sara Ramirez's name is pronounced more like "Sada" than Sara.
Here, listen to Ellen http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W-P2HGZe_Wk
and T.R. Knight http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bXrCmU2Hqd4
show you how it's done.
Harumph!
Daily Motion hates me/my computer/my connection long time. *sneefle*
I'm always bewildered when folks say that actors, by virtue of their profession, shouldn't voice their political opinions in a public forum. Being in the arts does not negate your right to free speech, regardless of FOX teevee.
And least we forget, for every Susan Sarandon, there's a Ronald Reagan. For every Sally Field, there's a Fred Thompson...
best dress
portia looked great!! But not sure about Ellen either...:(
I totally hate all these programs having comments on every dress... Best dressed lists really bug me. Who cares anyways! It's just a freaking dress. But coming from you, I can handle it:D
Can I say that I'm not really a fan of you sitting so far apart from eachother?:p But I'll forgive you this once, haha! Great episode!
Sit closer!
Too right - sit close to each other, ladies! Your body language with each other is one of the best things about this blog.
Got to agree about Ellen's badly cut mess of an outfit, but still - Ellen in her suit, Portia in a classy dress looking slinky as a puma, holding hands on the red carpet... butch/femme Hollywood is HOTT.
Regarding the censorship...
I just wanted to point this out:
"Technically, the use of "goddamn" is not profane, according to a 2003 FCC ruling regarding Bono's use of "goddamn" at the 2003 Golden Globes."
So it kinda pisses me off that she was wrongly censored. I don't think anyone should be censored for speaking their mind...
yay free speech, but use it well.
I gotta say, as much as I hate all of the censorship going on...
I was more disappointed that Sally Field trotted out that old essentialist line about women as naturally peaceful, no more wars, etc. Even (or maybe especially) if you're advocating peace, the idea that women are somehow inherently more peaceful is not a practical strategy (even though we do need more intelligent womenfolk in office) and it is not particularly observant. Besides the obvious, that there are women who aren't peaceful (a myth that the Brave One deconstructed and is frequently praised for in this blog, in fact), the fact that the majority of those who benefit from the war are men does not equate that men are inherently violent or that they all are pro-war. I know I'm preaching to the choir. But (as GOB Bluth would say) COME ON! You're going to use that line?
If you're GOING to be censored for expressing pro-peace sentiments, at least say something that is worth saying (critical, insightful, or at least relevant to the current status of the peace movement). It just feels like a lot of time well-meaning celebrities who are disconnected from the hard work activists do every day in challenging the way the mass media frames news and political discussion (not including the many celebs who are also active activists and know what's up) perpetuate the very perspectives they are supposedly dissenting against because they accept the terms of the argument at the outset. Which, inevitably, makes the job of actual full-time activist, a bit more difficult.
/Rant.
Because I'm not all political upset... also- Tina Fey and Mary Louise Parker were brilliant and looked gorgeous.huh..
.. nothing was censored over here in europe, or at least, in germany. maybe because of that 5 second delay thing?! weird though.. well, if fox really did it for the war statement, i'd say that was very counterproductive since they made a much bigger deal out of it..
whatever, yay 30 rock and ricky gervais!!
The best three-way on TV...
Watched the Emmys last night, it was pretty boring, but I was happy that Sally Field, America Ferrara, and Helen Mirren won.
And Glenn Close, Kyra Sedgwick, and Mary Louise Parker? Best three-way on TV!!!
Don't know what Ellen was wearing, but she always dresses weird anyway. It's part of her charm.
Not surprised that Fox censored Sally Field... after all, they are home to such liberal people like Bill O'Reilly and Sean Hannity, so what do you expect.
Lori, black is definitely your color. It suits you.
The Closer, of course
Yall should replace Melissa Rivers
I don't generally like watching those shows after the awards shows about the fashion on the red carpet on those, but out of boredom I have seen a few, and the only ones I've ever watched were ones on 'E!' , Fashion Police with Melissa Rivers or Joan Rivers, or both, and man do they pale in comparison to yall's fashion review here, I actually was able to watch enthusiastically. Probably agree with all of it except Mariska Hargitay, it might just be me, but I like her hair that way.
I would have to say that I agree with most of what you said, really ticked off about Sally Field being censored like that, Tina Fey :D, and Glen Close, Kyra Sedgwick, and Mary-Louise Parker were my favorite presenters. And truth be told I think the part where Glen and Kyra turn to Mary-Louise about her character was funnier than all of Ryan Seacrest's jokes put together. It might be because I just had a real problem with him hosting, I mean come on, Ryan Seacrest, couldn't they have gotten I don't know, somebody who's actually funny? Even Ellen, who honestly was not her best this time, in her what, two minutes did a better job of entertaining than he did, but I might be a tad bias. I'm probably bias on the fact that I liked the Jersey Boys medley, kind of a sucker for musicals.
Anyways, thanks so much for another really funny vlog-post, I love watching yall.
Emmy's
A Woman Director was Nominated
Go Figure...
censored?!
yes, sadly, censored
From what I'm reading, it seems that the censoring only happened in the US telecast by the idiots at FOX that wanted to hide the statement. This is what we saw here:
http://youtube.com/watch?v=RW3m0JEMrYk
We lost audio and they switched to a camera that wasn't directly looking at anything to hide the fact that about everyone there was applauding, this is really bad, for them to censor an opinion, and I believe that the feedback is at least 1000 times worse than if they had actually kept it, way to go FOX.
I have to say I really agree
I have to say I really agree with MelissaC5's post. Fox were pathetic to censure Sally Field, but she strikes me as someone who is intelligent enough to come out with a more astute criticism of the war if that's the stance she wants to take. We had good ol' Maggie Thatcher for over 10 years in the UK who was as militaristic as any male prime minister we've ever had and who, if she was in power today, would probably have handbagged Dubya for being too slow at marching back into the Middle east! And what about all the women who are in the armed forces
I think having the opportunity to express an opinion at an event like that, with the coverage it has, is a privilege, and therefore one that shouldnt be wasted if you are going to use it (and are intelligent enough to proffer something worth saying). But then, maybe it is easy to be critical when you're not the person suddenly put on the spot and expected to say something to millions of people. Maybe she didnt expect to win and just let rip with her frustration over the war....
It reminds me of a snippet from a Robin Williams stand up routine, where he (quite seriously) came out and said it would be fantastic if America had a woman president (after proceding to take the p*** out of previous male incumbents and their foreign policies). "Just think", he said "if we had a woman president, there wouldn't be any more senseless wars. Just every 28 days, some intense negotiations!!". ;-)
Excellent vlog as always.
Brothers & Sisters & Mothers & Lesbians, Oh My
Usually I agree that political statements are annoying on awards shows, but in Sally Field's case she was somewhat justified because her Brothers & Sisters character sent her son off to Iraq. I think if you win an award for a show/movie that addresses political/social issues, it would be strange to not mention whatever issue is addressed. I just wish she had been more articulate. That lengthy stammer made her sound not so bright. And what was with the camera angle whenever they censored? What happened to a short bleep?
Sarah and Lori, why so far apart in this blog? The body language between the two of you when you sit next to each other is sweet, and heaven knows we're all starved for any images of affection between lesbians. Having you two sit so far apart is like watching Spencer & Ashley get a hotel room and . . . brush each other's hair. :-)
I also missed the snarky pop-ups. Still love the blog, though, however you want to do it. When is She Said What coming back? And will the rest of the AfterEllen blogs ever be on iTunes?
skinny!
award shows suck
because they are completely biased, political and a waste of time and money. the sopranos was a good show (especially its first few seasons) but hardly the best show on television. i'm glad it's gone just so everyone will stop kissing soprano ass.
also, i love sally field but her history of award acceptance speeches is a little shaky to begin with. and being censored by fox shouldn't surprise anyone...i mean really. she's just lucky she didn't get tasered like that poor kid in florida. we live in a democracy (at least for now) and you're supposed to be able to say what you want (or so i've been told).
i, too, wondered why ellen was wearing a tassel around her neck but hey maybe she was having a high school graduation flashback.
