News, Reviews & Commentary on Lesbian and Bisexual women in Entertainment and the Media

She Made Me Watch This: TV and Movie Roundup (July 15, 2007)

In the second segment of our video blog this week (watch the first one on Lesbians and Ladies Rooms here), Lori and I rate and review the movies and TV shows we watched in the past 10 days or so, which include the new Harry Potter movie Order of the Phoenix, Gray Matters, Puccini for Beginners, Girltrash, Hell's Kitchen(Fox), Army Wives (Lifetime), Baldwin Hills (BET), Greek (ABC Family), Entourage (HBO), The Closer (TNT), Standoff (Fox), and the History Channel documentary The Star Wars Legacy.

Yes, I realize it looks like Lori and I did nothing but watch TV and movies this week, but we're discussing a few TV episodes from the previous week, too, and it's not very often that a Harry Potter movie and two lesbian movies get released around the same time. If only they would put a lesbian in a Harry Potter movie, our life would be complete!

You'll notice a few differences in this segment: We didn't use captions because it would have taken WAY too long, since we covered so much ground in this one — and as much as I like doing this vlog, I don't want to give up my entire Sunday for it. But we'll still use captions whenever it makes sense (which will be often).

We're also using this segment to introduce our new Bunny Designation System (BDS), which is sort of like a rating system, but with bunnies. It's hard to explain, but basically ... Lori likes bunnies. And it was better than anything else we could come up with. So if you don't like it, no chocolate from the Easter Bunny for you this year!

I don't think you gals could

I don't think you gals could be any more awesome or hilarious or spot on! Everything you say is just so true... and I'm right there with ya with the Harry Potter love (and the dislike of book 5). More importantly, I love the bunny designation system... totally necessary and totally awesome. And I'm totally appreciating the love Girltrash! is getting, but I think that mostly has to do with my complete adoration of Angela Robinson. Speaking of adoration, I love Gina Torres, and she really is wonderful in everything she's in. She's a truly under-rated actress. And BTW, this Baldwin Hills was not BET's first reality show; they've actually had quite a few, most notedly, College Hill, which does show some more of those black kids with aspirations that you wish you saw more of. I don't know what more to say, except you both are just completely awesome, and have become my idols... in a non-creepy kind of way. I aspire to be half as brilliant as you both are one day.

    it's official...

    you two are TOO adorable!!

I'm planning to go see OotP this week, so I'm glad to hear it's the best one yet, it should be interesting. (I'm partial too the books myself, so I've been a tad dissapointed in the previous films... I mean, don't even get me started on Michael Gambon's version of Dumbledore!)

I agree with Sarah on GM: too preachy, HG was way too annoying and it just missed something. "Imagine Me and You" it is not...

Thanks for giving us another great installment girls! keep it up:D

    erica07's picture

    sadness.

I find it sad that there is such a double standard for lesbian/gay movies vs. straight movies. "It was great... as far as lesbian movies go"; i wished that things could just be great. period.

also sadly, i agree with both (lesbian)movies reviews... when oh when well a great movie come out again.

Is there anyone else in the universe that hasn't read nor watched any Harry potter books/movies?

Bunnies rule.  Especially the Papi bunny.

    Anna Marie's picture

    OOtP is still my favorite

OOtP is still my favorite book, despite Harry's bitchiness. But I was upset that they cut out so much stuff and also changed some of it. Other than that, I loved the movie. Especially Tonks and Luna. The actresses were great and they played their characters amazingly.

    lesbians at hogwarts???

one thing i did notice in harry potter, were these two blonde girls that you alwasy see together. theres one scene when professor umbridge was in front of a group of kids (perhaps with the fireworks?) and something surprises\ scaresvall the kids, and the two blonde girls grab each other. anyways, they're always just in the backround, and it COULD be that they are just friends, but it seemed to me that even hogwarts had a lesbian coupple. just thought you might want to know!

    Booger's picture

    oh

my god, i totally noticed them too!  but then again, the patel sisters are always clinging onto each other, so maybe they are just supposed to be sisters or something.

    who knows...

    Janet: Everybody's talking about it.
    Amy: About what?
Janet: How you met Lucy and lived to tell about it. They're calling you a hero, when really you're a slut.
    Amy: You shut up
    Janet: A gay slut.

This is the best thing ever!

    I love the BDS.

P.S. Hearing Sarah say, "Bitches and hoes"... hilarious.

    Keep the bunnies

They are so hilarious and so cute lol

I agree with Lori about the whole Harry Potter/ Star Wars thing at the end of the movie. It definetly reminded me of it. Also book 5 was my least favourite and now I remember why I wanted Harry to be killed off after reading it. He was so angry in it and i'm glad it didn't show as much in the movie.
Girltrash!- I love it! Angela Robinson rocks. Monique has anger issues lol.

    Booger's picture

    well...

I always thought (despite that little wink she gave Harry in OotP) Tonks was kinda gay.

Or maybe that was just wishful thinking.

    *sigh*

    Janet: Everybody's talking about it.
    Amy: About what?
Janet: How you met Lucy and lived to tell about it. They're calling you a hero, when really you're a slut.
    Amy: You shut up
    Janet: A gay slut.

    KineticStillness's picture

I hate to break it to ya but...

...well, let's just say, you probably shouldn't read the sixth book if you want to keep your wishful thinking intact.  They stomped all over my hopeful little 'Tonks is obviously gay' heart with that one!  I really didn't like the sixth book since it seemed someone put a hetero lovefest spell on every single character.

I wonder if the next movie is going to be as much of a soap opera as the book?  Maybe they'll bring Cuaron back to darken it up a bit and at least give us some stereotypical evil lesbians.  Or, you know, Hermione and Ginny could finally realize they are meant to be together and all that.

PS:  All the hotness talk is focusing on Hermione but Ginny is looking hot!  Day-um.

    Booger's picture

    hehe

oh no, i've already read the 6th book.  i'm just deliberately ignoring it.  i'd like to think it's just a phase.  XD

the same director that did OotP has actually already been signed on for the HBP prince movie... or so he said on an A&E harry potter interview thingy.

ginny does look way more mature in OotP... and by mature, I mean extremely attractive.  Damn these british actors and their sex appeal!  Damn them to hell.

    Janet: Everybody's talking about it.
    Amy: About what?
Janet: How you met Lucy and lived to tell about it. They're calling you a hero, when really you're a slut.
    Amy: You shut up
    Janet: A gay slut.

    rhondaweasley's picture

    Tonks....

Right there with you ladies, up until the whole Lupin revelation I was quite sure Tonks was a Lesbian. Still not unconvinced she was at least bi. Ah well, at least Nat Tenna (despite her role being cut down to crumbs) looks hot playing Tonks.

Dear ickle Bonnie Wright (Ginny) is turning out quite nice. Can't see why Harry wouldn't want her now, lol. But they ruined the whole H/G romance in movie land anyway. They ignored her crush for too long so they're basically going to have to rush and cram this whole thing down everyone's throat. The HP movies are a lost cause really, I don't care anymore. Just give me my books and a happy corner to read them it.

Yay for the bunnies! Totally adorable. Big bunny fan here.

Loved the round up. Did a great job and I didn't miss the captions (though they're hilarious). The rating system made up for that. I liked both.

    I'll admit I really missed

I'll admit I really missed the captions. The bunnies were cute and I especially loved the indignant and Phoebe bunnies, but halfway through the vlog I realized what it was missing, and that was the captions. As always, you guys rock. I don't watch half the shows you watch, so half the time I don't know what you're talking about, but I'm still never bored while watching you. In fact, I think the only things you talked about that I've seen or usually watch are Gray Matters (which I only liked for Molly Shannon's character), Girltrash! (which was the best yet), and The Closer (but I haven't watched the new episode yet). The Closer is probably my favorite thing on television right now. Actually, there's no probably to it. Kyra Sedgwick wins at life and this show is bloody brilliant, even if it didn't get that rating. Though that top spot is going to be changing come August 10th, The Closer will be on the list for as long as TNT stays smart and keeps it on the air.
    rzr_247's picture

geez! I love you the BDS

It is really good idea putting some cute rating scale. I'm actually an avid fan of She made me watch this. And I also love Herminione since Harry Potter 1.
    kiss_hester's picture

    Bunnies=hilarious!

Absolutely adore the bunnies! They make me laugh everytime you held them up:p How many diffirent ones are there?! Keep it up.

I agree with Loti that Gray Matters is ok, but a one time movie. I think it was alright, but I don't have to see it again. As goes for Puccini For Beginners. Alright, but one time is enough. I guess I'm just more of the true lovestories, like Desert Hearts, Loving Annabelle and Between Two Women.

Girltrash is so awesome. Totally loving Monique! And Maeve's character... hope she's going to come back one day!

And Harry Potter, OMG!!! I've never been really into the Harry Potter thing, but always made myself watch the movies. Well, the latest was just so awesome!! I loved that scene where Dumbledore was fighting Voldemort, respect!:p
    Dr_HF's picture

Could she make you tell us about something you read too?

You're adorable, you two big geeks!

Clearly your viewing schedule is already pretty punishing. But would you have time to maybe include an occasional book in your roundup? Just the thought of all that tv gives me a migraine.

And although we're very busy with all the gangs and guns and all, we don't want people thinking that we lesbians don't have time to read.

    imthey's picture

    I am officially obsessed

I am officially obsessed with watching She Made Me Watch This... Lori and Sarah are awesome.  I also enjoyed the Bunny rating system, but couldn't help but think of Anya from BTVS and her fear/hatred of bunnies.

I thought Gray Matters was a bit boring, especially since the previews made it appear that there would be more between the two female characters than there was.  Puccini Matters was a bit talky (?), but I enjoy Elizabeth Reaser so I couldn't hate the movie, plus Julianne Nicholson (sigh).  I just saw Elizabeth in a beautiful little movie called Sweet Land.

Looking forward to the next SMMWT...

    BUNNIES ROCK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    The Bunny System Rocks!!!!!!

More Bunnies please! Why is the Phoebe bunny not coloured in?

My girlfriend is not geeky about tv shows. She watches them and thats it whereas I go off on rants as to whats wrong with a show or even the ads. She just rolls her eyes and makes fun of me although I do it just to annoy her sometimes! I love pulling  apart shows with my friends. Its great fun.

    Do keep the Bunnies!

I misread BDS as BDSM - maybe that could stand for Bunny Designation System Moments? ;) Please do keep the bunnies, they're the added bonus in this vlog episode!

Gina Torres... Didn't she kiss Peta Wilson in a La Femme Nikita episode?

I am going to watch Gray Matters. In a bit.

    Keep the Bunnies!!

They rock, as does this whole series. I love it....keep them coming, you guys are hilarious.
    The Hearer's picture

    Kinda seasick

First: Compliment, I enjoy every time you two do this.

Second: Keep the bunnies (who drew them anyway ?)

Third: It´s probably just me, but I got kinda seasick with you ladies moving around like that. Movies, not moving.

Fourth: Lori, you remind me of someone, I just don´t know who. And that drives me nuts (and I am highly allergic to nuts). Someone with your sense of humour. And your eyebrows. And pretty much everything else. Hmm. One of these days, I´ll remember who. And then, I won´t tell.

Fifth: Keep it up (I wanted to write "Keep them coming", too, but that seemed so .... inappropriate ..... leading to thoughts ..... can´t go there .....).

Sixth: And thanks for the fun and entertainment. That´s what I am here for.

    Listener15's picture

    Bunnies!

I have to agree with everyone else on this, keep the bunnies. I had to pause a couple of times you ladies had me laughing so hard at your bunny descriptions. Priceless.

The 5th HP book bothered me too, I kept hoping someone would smack Harry ("Get over it!"). I was thrilled that they didn't keep that throughout the movie. Loved Luna.

I was a little surprised that Lori didn't remember that Gina Torres was in the short lived series Cleopatra 2525 AND played Cleopatra in a Xena ep (King Of Assasins, she was also in Hercules as Nebula but I didn't watch that show unless Xena and Gabrielle were on it). No, I didn't have to look that up, and yes I'm still an obsessed fan (oh wait, the lawyers said not to use that term anymore, devoted fan, yes devoted).

One last thing, I LOVE watching you two. Lori's expressions to what Sarah is saying is hilarious. Bloody brilliant bunny!

    Trix's picture

    hm...

Actually, Lori reminds me of Karina Lombard, don't ask me why! This is an entirely good thing, btw.

...Moving along from that probably strange-sounding comment, here's another vote for the bunny system. Please keep it!

    The Hearer's picture

    Suggestion

Seventh: Perhaps you could review the most lesbian alleged "non-lesbian but should have been couples" on the big and small screens ... watching that Cagney & Lacey clip brought back some memories and thoughts ... E.g. of "LA Law" (Amanda Donohue should have ....). And I always wondered about Debbie Allen on "Fame". I bet there are many more.

Great vid blog...I totally agree with your assessment of "The Closer".  Several people I work with watched it and it was a watercooler topic the next day.  It's definitely emmy material.  I'm not so sure about the bunnies...fear the bunny!

Hi! I hope I do not sound like an ungrateful girl. Yes, the video blogs are great but I cannot understand what's going on due to my hearing loss. IMAX 3D

I feel I must absolutely spread the word about watching Order of the Phoenix at the IMAX.  The experience is nearly indescribable.  Imagine, 360 degrees surround sound with vibrating chairs to accompany all of the bangs, crashes and thumps.  Last but certainly not least, the grand finale is in 3D!  You get large goofy as good be glasses to wear (when indicated) for the amazing fight seen.  I can not express enough how much this is worth the extra few dollars.  All you can say and hear when you leave the theater is "bloody brilliant".

    on manatees...

oh my god, love the video! you guys are the best! i watch this the day it comes out and i get all excited! really love your site, too. i feel informed and lesbified after i visit it.

but i was thinking, in the L word the animals in the tank that Jenny is watching are actually Beluga whales... just FYI.

manatees are a lot smaller and darker gray color and they swim in shallower water, which is why they are endangered, because boats run over them.

    ReluctantVlogger's picture

    Yep, you caught me

Thank you for watching our vlog and for catching my mistake! On a vlog, you can't take it back! Right after the word "manatees"left my mouth, I had to roll with it. Then all I could think of was "beluga whales" in mind for the next five minutes of the vlog! Unfortunately, manatees has been replaced beluga whales in my vocabulary every since Scribegrrrl's LWord podcast came out.

BTW, I didn't know they were endangered. :( Thanks for this important info.
