In the first segment of our video blog this week (watch the second segment here), Lori and I talk about a disturbing trend we've identified in movies and TV shows: the popularity of lesbian seduction scenes that take place in public (or semi-public) restrooms. No, we can't believe we're talking about this, either.
But from South of Nowhere to The L Word, Claire of the Moon and Femme Fatale to Wild Side and Love on the Side, lesbians are hooking up in bathrooms all over the big and small screen — and that's not even counting the NFL cheerleaders incident! Here's our take on it: She Made Me Watch This: Lesbians and the Ladies Room
Now let us know your thoughts on this trend — and which scenes we've left out... Submitted by on July 15, 2007 - 12:44am. |

You guys are really,really
You guys are really, really entertaining! Thanks! I'm looking forward to the next segment already.
"call me old fashioned but I prefer feminism that leaves a little something to the imagination!"
Very interesting....
This truly needed to be addressed....LOL...I would NEVER do that...it's just gross, no matter how pristine the public restroom may be...I'm looking at my dvd collection and I can't think of anymore lesbian restroom hook-up scenes...bummer!...
I enjoy the Vlog tremendously, keep them coming!
yay!

VERY INTERESTING
Call you old fashioned? As you wish.
Yes you are old fashioned and probably sexually repressed a result of growing up in a patriarchal society.
But what I really want to know is : Have you women just opened the closet door or what? Lesbians and bathrooms are as old as the day in long, meaning that from clubs to house parties Lesbians have utilized this environment of quasi privacy. So why is this being represented as a revelation? For the baby dykes? I don't think they are that clueless.
Wow!
Get really personal why don't you!
Don't know how sexually repressed other people are but I personally feel a little self repression of your aggression would not go amiss!
btw maybe you should also look up some info on Sarah Warn before you start throwing out random remarks on the effects of patriarchal society?
"call me old fashioned but I prefer feminism that leaves a little something to the imagination!"
Lezxotic
Is your aggressive, spiteful attitude a result of growing up in a matriarchal society? That would shatter my dream of a better world once women/mothers took over.
Show Me Love
Fucking Amal's bathroom scene was an obvious pun(probably why it is my favorite). They came out of the (water)closet.
"I can explain why I like, but not why I love."
You kissed me first ...
Let's make it three L Word bathroom scenes and include S2 Alice and Dana.
Best bathroom scene was definitely Femme Fatale.
four!
let's not forget the jenny marina sex scene in the unisex bathroom in the planet before tim walks in!
four!
let's not forget the jenny marina sex scene in the unisex bathroom in the planet before tim walks in!
Don't forget....
the scene in Better than Chocolate where basically everything happens in the bathroom...
...sex... waiting... and a beating.
But I suppose I was only supposed to point out the sex. *shrug*
I know I'm missing something else...
I think scribegirlllllllllrlrl [or whoever recapped ep1of Curl Girls] mentioned lesbians and high-traffic area bathrooms.
OH! Yes. And you guys are extremely entertaining. :D
I'll make sure to wear less black as well.
My theory!
My theory?
The bathroom is a male-free territory and therefor safe for lesbians.
Best I can do.

Totally. Also, it’s the easiest/closest place to go if you’re in a bar or restaurant. And if you’re drunk. When the mood hits, who wants to wait till you get home? Plus, it's just totally hot. Seriously...
I'm gonna poll the women I know on this, but I don’t think it’s at all unusual. I bet half say they've done it.
I’m all over that hygiene thing, tho - skeezy is a total deal breaker. However, all public bathrooms are NOT created equal.
Most upscale restaurants/bars have perfectly fine bathrooms. Certain hotels facilities are available to the public. The bathrooms in the lobby of the Waldorf are amazing – totally private, clean, roomy. Hell, they’re like studio apts.
I’d also suggest it’s proper etiquette to give the bathroom attendant a nice fat tip when you leave (and if it’s not, it should be).
;)
I'm gonna regret
... posting that when I sober up, aren't I?
:(
Don't worry zee...
All those that are going 'ewww' just don't know what they're missing...
Been there, done that.
I can recommend it, with the right person :-)
Have to disagree
While steamy entertainment, I think bathroom lesbian seductions are included in popular tv and movies because bathrooms are not locations you’d associate with the occurrence of true romance and are semi-public therefore are accessible to male fantasy and therefore less controversial as the depiction of lesbians at a hotel/home in bed.
just remember to carry some lysol wipes in your purse
nice question. i've often wondered about the sanitariness of this issue myself.
it's all about the dichotomy between private and public spaces. as you say, these bathrooms are often located in public places or in private spaces (i.e., houses) that have been opened up to the public (i.e., bette and tina's house party in season 1, episode 1, of the l word). by nature, bathrooms are private areas where we go to attend to our own private business. but bathrooms in public settings occupy a liminal place between private and public. anyone can access them at any time, yet they offer just enough sanctity and privacy, like the so-called closet that shelters a person under the guise of heterosexuality (or the bedroom), that it ends up okay to launch a surprise seduction on someone you're jonesing for.
either that, or there's something about getting your jiggy on and risking getting caught. everyone likes that element of risk.
can i say that i'm glad you guys can't stand better than chocolate? god, that's the most terrible movie ever. the first time i watched it, i cringed. it's just so bad and so cheesy. bleh!
i enjoy these video segments you're doing. i've determined that sarah is the marv albert persona, the one who calls the descriptive play-by-play action (i.e., summarizes necessary plots and character developments), and lori is the doug collins/charles barkley/kenny smith color commentator. i think that's pretty funny and cool.

'twas brillig, and the slithy toves
did gyre and gimble in the wabe:
all mimsy were the borogoves,
and the mome raths outgrabe
Sure it is the gay men
Actually...
I've got to say, this has actually kind of been a fantasy of mine! I had just been watching the first episode of The L Word (particularly the Jenny Marina scene) when I fell madly in love with a friend of mine in high school (still not over that, guh...). So naturally the hottest/gayest situation that I'd seen was this, and I wanted to recreate it! Plus that's where we all often changed for marching band (yeah, yeah... ;) ). I'm just gonna say we couldn't take our eyes off of one another! I'd catch her standing inches from me, lingering and pretending to be touching up her hair while I changed down to my skivvies! Okaaay, I'm done. Got a little carried away... fyi, in the end we were both wusses, nothing happened, although I was quite positive it would...
Whateva, so It's understandable. But then again those bathrooms were fairly private. If I were in a restaurant or something? No way!
Agreed though, no men helps. Also that TLW Dana and Alice scene was adorable!
I'm loving these segments!
OMG this actually happened to me!!!
Show me love...
Aww, I love that you included Show me love, or Fucking Åmål i swedish. That was like my coming out film, in 6th grade thay took every class in my school to watch that film and discuss homosexuality...yes, good times!
=)
Wait - ladies room = L-room?!
Funnily, I hadn't noticed there were that many lesbian seduction scenes in public washrooms! But I have wondered on many an occasion about the germs and sanitary stuff... It's just way too "EW!" for me to get it on in a public washroom.
Claire of the Moon had an L-room seduction? Oh my - I only remember not liking the movie. At all. I didn't like "Better than chocolate" either, but at least it had eye candy (yes, Christina). And a happy ending. (No dead nor pregnant lesbians dressed in black.)
My fave is definitely the one in "Show me love" where Agnes and Elin finally come out of the closet together *lol* That was so cute.

I actually loved the next
I actually loved the next shot when, after the "brave" words they go home and make chocolate milk. Now that was really cute!
"call me old fashioned but I prefer feminism that leaves a little something to the imagination!"
I remember...
just to be off topic, I remember in the first segment you guys did, Sarah said something like lesbians never change their hair.. I noticed that you guys have kept true to that.. haha. Well thanks for another great segment, I wouldn't know about half these movies if it wasn't for this site.
You girls should have your
lesbian without borders

L0V3 !$P@!N~Definately the l word scenes with jenny and marina and the one with them at the planet and the alice and dana one.
I have to admit that the whole bathroom thing has happened to me... in an applebees bathroom while one of the servers took a quick "break". it was hot though lol.
DONT FORGET DANA!!
Incredibly True Adventures
1. There's a bathroom sene at the start of The Incredibly True Adventures of Two Girls in Love, isn't there? In the gas station.
2. I once got my foot stuck in a toilet bowl. It was a hot summer night, it was a great bar, we were young and carefree, we were probably drunk...Ah, good times! But a word from the wise: getting your foot stuck in the bowl is (a) painful, although funny, and (b) a mood breaker. I expect one of us was wearing black; I was definitely wearing a pair of biker boots that i never wore again.
Love Pussy xx
......
Personally
I never made out with anyone in any bathroom, public or otherwise, however, on two different occasions I have seen women do that. The thought of germs, getting caught, and the smell makes it the antithesis of a good make out spot to me.
I don't think it's just a gay guy thing or a straight male fantasy. I've seen far too many straight couples get it on in a public bathroom over the years on countless tv shows. I guess tile and stalls are an aphrodisiac to some people.
Completely off topic but, did you guys come up with a rating system yet? I was thinking maybe using u-hauls would work.
Other movies
Hmmm
I don't get it, why do most lesbians hate Jenny? I haven't seen past half of season 2, but I still like her. I think she's an interesting character.
But I have no idea about bathrooms. Most of the public bathrooms over here are pretty gross, so I wouldn't do anything in there.
ah
Hmmm
It's more like a chance
I'm not into restrooms
I actually liked "Six Days
I actually liked "Six Days Seven Nights". Two of the best lines:
"I've had about as much vacation as I can take." and "Pirates!?...As in ARGH?!"
"Nothing is impossible and there is no such thing as a lost cause"
Six days seven nights
i really liked the scene in the plane when it was about to crash and she took some drugs to calm her nerves and she says the most randomn things into the CB radio, i think it was something like..
"attention Kmart shoppers sand shovels are on special for $9.99!"
hilarious.
don't forget Cagney and Lacey's bathroom discussions
Something like this...
Graham's theory-
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dbPubVTfDxY"I can explain why I like, but not why I love."
The Wild Side w/ Anne Heche and Joan Chen
Orange County
Oh, and my theory...
I suspect that bathrooms hook-ups are a way to convey instant passion in the scene. It's weird, but think about it: the characters want each other so badly that they can't even wait until they get home to hook up. Plus, they're so absorbed in each other that it doesn't even register with them that the place they chose to hook up in is a germ factory.
Then there's the whole thing about the bathroom as a semi-public space, which adds a degree of risk that ups the hotness factor. At least for some people. I can't get past the ewwwww.
Pretty Funny
Dylan & Helena, The L Word S3!
Am I the only one who thinks that scene was hot? I had to rewatch the episode to make sure it was a washroom. And i think it is. It was in the recording studio where Kit was recording with Betty? It happened before Helena took Dylan back to her place to 'you know what'. Man that was totally hot...
polls are closed...
polls are closed...
Actually, I agree that the
Actually, I agree that the Helena/Dylan scene was really hot. To bad that they didn't stay together longer because they were seriously hot together.
And bathroom scenes, Femme Fatale gets my first place.
Not too strange, really
Sometimes you just need to be kissing someone. *Right then.* But you are out somewhere in a public place, and it would be inappropriate to be suddenly making out in the middle of everyone. So you go to the nearest male-free, relatively private space you can find. It's not that complicated.
Plus, as zee has pointed out -- while there are sketchy restrooms you might avoid, there are also perfectly decent ones that give you a bit of separation from too-keen onlookers. So voila! You are enjoying some measure of seclusion, sparks are flying, and if things progress than you can take them elsewhere. Not that I speak from experience or anything ... ;)
I guess what I'm trying to say is that although I appreciate the deeper analysis of the portrayal of these scenes (e.g. from MyMomCallsMeHer...), I think they are on screen because they are *in life*. And it's not just a 'girl-on-girl' thing. What about the MILE HIGH club? Where do you go when you want privacy? The loo on an airplane? Now THAT isn't too clean, and pretty cramped no less. I know plenty of friends, gay and straight, who in the heat of the moment found the nearest place they could to hook up. Strangely (or perhaps just conveniently?) enough -- that's the bathroom.
Thanks
Thanks to you and Janneke for not leaving me twisting in the wind alone out there! :)
