She Made Me Watch This!: "Love on the Side" and the 6 Gayest Non-Gay Teen Movies

Lori and I are back with another weekly video blog, and this time we have a name for it: "She Made Me Watch It!", which was the most popular of the 110 suggestions you all made last week ("Lori doesn't listen, and Sarah doesn't care" was a close second :). Thanks for the assist!

We've decided to break up the video blog into segments moving forward, to make it easier for you to watch us ramble on only about the topics you're interested in. So here goes...

Review of Love On the Side (2004)
First up, a review of the new-ish lesbian movie you've probably never heard of, Love on the Side (aka Deluxe Combo Platter), starring Marla Sokoloff (The Practice), Jennifer Tilly (Bound) and Monika Schnarre (Beastmaster). In this romantic comedy, all the guys fall over the hot new woman in town, Linda (Schnarre), who is secretly gay and only interested in Eve (Sokoloff), a waitress pining for a local guy who only has eyes for Linda, etc. Does Linda get the girl? Does Eve wear sensible shoes? Does Jennifer Tilly deliver another over-the-top performance? Watch it and find out! (But don't worry, we don't spoil the ending.)

Here's the DVD cover for the movie (the lesbian is the blonde in front):

The 6 Gayest Non-Gay Teen Movies
Our list of the top six teen movies featuring straight girls that in any other universe would be gay (yeah, we're talking 'bout you, Mean Girls' Janis Ian!).

    Another Great Installment

You guys were great once again and I love the name. It's easy to remember since it's close to "She Said What." Snarky comments were the best set so far.

I've actually seen Love on the Side, and agree with everything you said. I'm gonna try to let you guys know about any other movies that may have fallen through the cracks. Can't wait for your next one.

    browne's picture

    They never actually stated

They never actually stated that Eliza Dushku's character was straight in Bring It On. They simply never confirmed that she was gay. But her character never denied being gay when the other characters suggested it, and she didn't have any straight love interest. There was nothing positively to indicate heterosexuality.
    Omega II's picture

    Missys...Missies?

Missy(Eliza Dushku) of Bring It On and Haley(Missy Peregrym) of Stick It were so gay, hinted but never confirmed.

    love it

I LOVE Stick it, simply for Missy Peregrym. Pulling herself out of the ice bath.. yeah. great movie!

she's always lesbianish to me o(^_^)o

Eliza Dushku ~ everything i've seen her in, i've never viewed her as "straight" - she always lookso lesbianish - she'some other chick's ass-kicking girlfriend ;* ALWAYS. she could be cast in a period film playing a queen and i'd still think her oh-so-gay!

    and since this blog speaks of "gayest non-gay films" ... there's a lot of anime that'supposedly yuri-ai buthey're not ~ SUPPOSEDLy they're not but whatever ~ ;^p

    You girls are great!

This is the first time I watch your video, and it was pretty good, entertaining, and I agree with most of the stuff you were saying about the movies I saw...  Thanks for giving me ideas for other movies to recommend to my younger gay friends!  Congrats!

    Totally agree with you on

Totally agree with you on Some Kind of Wonderful, Sarah. Her character was *so* gay!!! (Come on, a tomboyish drummer who had no chemstry with her supposedly love-interest...)
    Julia's picture

    faculty!!!! Man, Stokely

faculty!!!! Man, Stokely (Clea Duvall) should have been gay, instead of pretending to be gay to prove her independence from people or whatever "Being lesbian is just my sense of security..." She was the outcast, wearing black and chains (!!), but in the end, she gets the guy, wears a skirt and bright colors :-( oh please
    playthemusic814's picture

    Re: Stokely

Oh yeahhhh... Stokely. Wow, yeah, Stokely was seriously gay. Mmm... Jordana. Wait, what was I saying?

    ~It means pride.~

    mollyblooming's picture

    Good point!

Definitely Stokely in Faculty, excellent! I had forgotten about that movie...but now that I think of it...Jordana...oh wait, where was I? What was the movie about again lol

    great

way to start a sunday morning. thanks for posting these!

    I'm actually sitting here

I'm actually sitting here giggling to myself now because I'm a drummer with short hair, and since we're a metal band I wear a lot of black and chains. Or at least I used to when we started out and I was about 15. I've kind of moved passed that now being a respectable 20 year old and all.

I also actually screamed out loud in the cinema when Janis Ian's character ended up with Kevin G at the end of Mean Girls. I find Bring It On works a lot better if you see the whole thing as being about Missy/Torrence and their relationship. Just ignore Cliff. Trust me. It works.

    I agree

...with pretty much everything you said. Eliza Dushku in Bring It On. Yeah. Calling a girl "Missy" is no way to make her straight. I mean, my parents insisted on calling me that when I was younger and I turned out to be totally gay.

My cousin calls that 80's movie with Mary Stuart Masterson "Some Kind of Wonderful Girl". For Mary, of course.

Thanks for the great start to my day. How cute are you guys. Much love from the sunshine state.

Holy crap! Every Missy I've ever known has been gay! Crazy. :-)

    i love that wearing black

i love that wearing black was the sign of lesbianism and both sarah and lori were wearing black. very cute!
    BetweenThaLines's picture

Re: i love that wearing black

I was just going to say that! And I'm wearing black aswell, so I guess it is a sign of lesbianism:p

But I think it's a bit weird to say that a girl looks very gay, so she must be... Because I soooo often meet women that look very gay in the way they dress and with their hair and all, but they talk about guys all the time. I even had the hugest crush on a girl like that once, so it was very frustrating for me. I makes me very confused... Gaydar not really working I guess. Although there are plenty of times I'm right, thank god!

    JustBunches's picture

    Haha

I also wear a lot of black so this all sounds very funny to me. I wish it were that easy to spot a lesbian. If only we were color coded or have a fool proof way of identifying ourselves my life would be SO much better. Unfortunately, that's not the case (besides that would be too boring if we all wore the same color anyway).

I know what it's like to have a faulty gaydar...heck who am I kidding? I have ZERO gayday. My friends joke that for me to know a woman is a lesbian, she'd have to literally come up to me and french me.

    Mara's picture

    Color coordinated dress code?

Thank gawd I don't need to change my wardrobe (I love black), and I happen to have a chain *LOL* I bet you two agreed on wearing black for this week's installment - in case anyone was still wondering about you, eh? ;)

I loved "Just one of the guys" and I remember Terry (Joyce Hyser) trying to escape Sherilyn Fenn's character on the beach, not succeeding and Sherilyn pulling out a sock from Terry's pants *LOL*

And I loved Bend it like Beckham, too. I totally agree with you: Jess and Jules together had chemistry burning off the screen. It made sense when I read they dropped the lesbian story line from the script at the last minute to make the film more marketable.

"Some kind of wonderful" always made me wonder... In the movie Mary was too cute to be straight, and Eric was probably in the closet ;)

Foxfire... Hm. I rest my case.

    Some Kind of Wonderful

I was little boy still in single digits age-wise when I first saw that movie and I was "She is in love with a GUY?".

ETA- Bend IT Like Beckam makes so much more sense now.

And- Every time I see Firefox listing I think it says Foxfire. I am starting to resent seeing Clint Eastwood's name.

The movie really does make more sense when you know how the story was SUPPOSED to have turned out. How great would it have been to see Keira in the REAL version?

    The list

The list was very well thought out. I agreed with all your choices. I also noticed like others did that you two were wearing black and had to giggle. It's good to know black=lesbian. I haven't been wrong for wearing it all the time; including right now.
    Gobias Somecoffee's picture

    Jennifer Tilly

I think I'm the only one but I couldn't finish watching Bound.  Even though she's pretty hot, her voice just drives me crazy.  It's so insanely high and squeaky.

The list....I've only seen "Bend it Like Beckham" and I've read that the ending was suppose to be gay too but sadly it wasn't.  Keira Knightley and Parminder Nagra did have more chemistry together than with Jonathon Rhys Meyers.  But he was awesome in Velvet Goldmine though.

    BetweenThaLines's picture

    agree

I was never much into Bound. I don't like Jennifer's voice either. It's really annoying actually. Finally someone who agrees:p
    MsWoo's picture

    Turn down the sound

It works. Hot as the flick is, and much as I love it... I do laugh when I hear her say "kiss me, Corky".

    Just One of the Guys

I loved that movie! Still do. It came out when I was 2, lol. But I have to correct you on the gay thing. At the prom, just before the Big Breast Revelation, Terry has something to tell Rick, and Rick says that he knows what it is: Terry's gay. Then Terry opens her tux shirt to reveal the goods. So they do say gay! The end.
    SuperKuka's picture

    I Agree.And yes, Rick does

    I Agree.

And yes, Rick does say that Terry is gay and is scared that she/he might be in love with him. It's quite of funny. I loved that movie also, and I was checking out Joyce Hyser who playes Terry, and she was born in 1957. That means... that she's 50 now, and when I was watching that movie she was like 28... wow. That's all I can say.

    Lori's picture

    loved it

every single movie you listed was right on. you now need to have a sequel for gayest non-gay adult movies, ha. well not adult movies, but yeah you get the picture. keep up the video blogs. I love 'em.

Lesbians really do wear black... alot...

It's funny that when you mentioned the stereotype of lesbians wear black alot you and Lori both were wearing black.. and uh yeah so was I when I watched it... lol it's funny to see that us lesbians really are that predictable

    BILB definitely

Good to see Bend It Like Beckham being recognized as the raging mass of GAYGAYGAY that it was. Jules in particular is flaming. Though, really, how many Keira Knightley characters seem straight to you? She herself appears to be, but whenever I see her in character, my mind goes to "gay or at least bi" in a flash. Particularly, weirdly, in King Arthur -- I think playing opposite Ioan Gruffudd (who is another of those apparently-straight, radiates gay IC people) enhances the overall aura.
    XSaraXPoeX's picture

    That was excellent!

    Intelligent, funny women RAWK!

I watched Bend it like Beckem on IFC and thought it was a lesbian movie till the very end. :(

    Sorry...

Sorry...I'm about to let out my literary geek. I spent a semester of my undergraduate work taking a class that looked at modernizations of Shakespeare. "One of the Guys" and "She's the man" are just modernized versions of "As You Like It". The same goes for "West Side Story" being Romeo and juliet and "10 Things I Hate About You" coming from "Taming of the Shrew". Ok I'll stuff the literary geek back in her cage and say just one more thing:

This V-blog is so much fun. I'm glad you guys are going to be keeping it up.

    Twelfth Night

I think you mean Twelfth Night, not As You Like It, though both employ cross-dressing in their respective plots. Shakespeare "borrowed" that element from other sources, as he did for much of his work, I'm sure.

Also, She's The Man was an open adaptation of Twelfth Night specifically, even using the same character names (Duke, Viola, Olivia, Toby, Sebastian, etc.).

    Walking_Contradiction's picture

    You are entirely correct. i

You are entirely correct. i typed the wrong title. Thanks for the correction.

You ladies got it - and

You ladies got it - and speaking of She's the Man, which wasn't half bad at all for the genre...anyone notice that Amanda Bynes doesn't have much chemistry with the boys? In both that film (though she was dressed as a guy most of the time) and in the sitcom What I Like About You, she totally doesn't seem to have any chemistry with the guys, but does with the gals...just a thought.

Ok, now the wishful thinking police can come and take me away. Oh, and Bynes is 21 so I'm trying not to feel that dirty about the topic...

I quite enjoyed the version with actress Imogen Stubbs (I used to have a crush on her when I was younger):

Keira Knightly+short hair = HOT HOT HOT

When the movie just came out, I think it was in 2002, I was just developing my sexuality. I was in the dvd store and saw this movie "Bend it Like Beckham", I was crazy about the soccer (didn't really love Beckham, I was more into Z.Zidane as a soccer-player), and the front picture of the dvd was nice. So I rented the dvd. But when I saw Keira Knightley and Parminder Nagra play together in this movie, they had really more chemistry with each other then with Jonathon Rhys Meyers. I don't really have a gay-dar but it rang loudly, damn.I was sure that they were falling in love. Especially after the little kiss. Even the mother (didn't like her) of Jules though they were gay.

And like Sarah said, in the original script they were meant to fall in love!!! And I read also on the internet that they haven't done it because they were sacred for the reaction of the Indian Culture (like with the episode in season four of Xena)

But KEIRA KNIGHTLY with SHORT  hair = HOT

    I know I'm sick

... but I really enjoyed it in "This cheese is so bad it's great" kind of way. And, you know, watching fem chicks stomp around waving big guns and shouting FUCK! a lot amuses me.

Of course, no resemblance to the real woman the story was based on, but I put that part out of my mind.

    betsyforgets's picture

    buddy film... and more!

In "Bring It On" and most films with a single object of indentification, the side kick cannot have a social life without distracting the audiences ability to primarily identify with the protagonist.  Any complexity delineates object identification (I want to be her) and fetishization (wanting to be her requires wanting her).  Both of these relations being equally important in gaining pleasure from traditional narrative film.  The side-kick has no sexuality of their own, but instead focuses all their attention on the same sex object. The entire concept does not allow the character to be anything except lesbian.

Foxfire is originally a really interesting book written by Joyce Carol Oates, with characters set in the fifties.  It is a really angry book because it's not just a teacher or single people that oppress these characters, but society as a whole.  Honestly the only book I've read angrier than Foxfire is the autobiography of Malcolm X.  Needless to say, the book is interesting and worth reading.

In reference to Just One of the Guys, George Cukor made a 1935 RKO film called Silvia Scarlett which starred Katherine Hepburn and Carey Grant.  This film also recreates Taming of Twelfth Night, however, it also brings in issues of class as well.  A great part of the film is after Katherine Hepburn is kissed on screen by a woman, later on when the woman realizes this, the woman doesn't actually care. George Cukor was a gay man, and so was Grant, and supposedly Hepburn, which historically makes the film that much funnier.  You all should rent it.  It's a great film.

What? No love for the evilkinkysheep that came up with the revolutionary and so amazingly fresh and original title of this v-log? :P
But tsokay, i still heart you. And Lori's giggles. :)

"Just one of the guys" was like..something of devine origin for me when i caught it on tv not so many years later of its release.
But i had first watched http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0092216/ aka "Willy/Milly" on tape (even if it's a movie that came one year later than "Just one of the guys"). Ohh, the memories...and oh how terrified i was from hearing the faintest of noises that sounded like someone walking in on me watching something so obviously gay. Haha.

    Goonies

    TheWeyrd1's picture

    I would reverse 1 & 2 of the teen movies...here's why:

In Little Darlings there are two characters playing off each other to create that lesbian chemistry. In fact, I'd probably place Bend It Like Beckham before Some Kind of Wonderful based on that reasoning too...except I REALLY loved Mary Stuart Masterson in both that movie and later in Fried Green Tomatoes...hehehe. But, back to Little Darlings, I was convinced in my own little adolescent brain that Kristy McNichol was a lesbian (early gaydar in action) and that even if her character was in the boathouse with that lesbianish boy played by Matt Dillon, she was really fantasizing about Tatum O'Neil's character (or maybe Kristy was fantasizing about being with Tatum O'Neil...I know I was fantasizing about them being together...or maybe I was fantasizing about being with Kristy...or was that Tatum???). Anyway, I could go there just a little more with Little Darlings than with Some Kind of Wonderful (though Eric Stoltz was kind of lesbianish in that film too).
    jennifer from pittsburgh's picture

Some Kind of Really Gay It's a Wonderful Life

Mary Stuart Masterson was SO gay in that movie, so gay. I remember watching that movie (on video) with a bunch of lesbian roommates for the first time and we were all heckling the screen and tossing empty beer cans at the ending. Yes, a bad movie ending should be rated on how many empties it warrants. As for Dushku in 'Bring It On'...what movie were you girls watching? She's obviously at least bi-curious, but I think she's outright gay. Hell, I watched it again with one of my slack-jawed children, I mean, wonderful genius spawn not too long ago and he was all...she's gayer than you! I don't know about you, but I don't need more proof than that.
    SterlingMB's picture

    Thanks Lori and Sarah!

Hi Ladies...this is such a cool new feature! Damn entertaining too...

As for 'Some Kind of Wonderful' Watts screamed gay to me before I even had an inkling that that was what my obsession with Lea Thompson was REALLY all about. So now when I re-watch the film I just like to imagine Watts and Amanda making out at the end...

As for for 'Stick It' and 'Bend it Like Beckham' both of those movies have always felt stunted to me...like there was an entire storyline that was left on the cutting room floor....

Anyways, thanks again...have a great week!
