In this week's video blog, Lori and I discuss the cinematic women who've saved the world from impending doom — because nothing's hotter than a woman who chases tornadoes, electrocutes evil sharks, or creates a lot of complicated mathematical charts and graphs! Since not everyone's as big of a disaster movie nut as Lori is, we're giving you a video cheat-sheat on the disaster movies with the best female leads: Saffron Burrows creates the perfect killing machine and then tries to undo it in Deep Blue Sea, Hilary Swank goes on a mission to jump-start the earth's motor in The Core, Vivica Fox rescues the First Lady from an alien attack in Independence Day, Shelley Winters does some deep-sea diving in Poseidon Adventure, Kim Delaney saves California from falling into the ocean in 10.5 and 10.5 Apocalypse, Kate Winslet floats in Titanic, and Anne Heche and Linda Hamilton duck lava bombs in Volcano and Dante's Peak.
All while slinging witty one-liners and sporting just the right kind of sexy mussy hairdo! (Um, them, not us - although we do make sarcastic comments in our vlog, and Lori does occasionally have a whisp of hair out of place.) Because we've upgraded our software, we now have nifty new theme music! You'll also be happy to know the snarky captions are back; unfortunately, the new video editing software doesn't come with a spell-checker, so you'll notice a few typos. But life's too short to do it all over just because Hilary Swank insists on spelling her name with only one "l". (Although I don't have an excuse for leaving the "i" out of "premiere", except I had that old saying "there's no 'I' in "team" stuck in my head. You can blame my basketball coach for that.) Besides commentary on the movies, you'll also learn about how I narrowly escaped a tornado in Fargo, North Dakota; why Lori believes mentoring is important even in the face of world annihilation; and why we're both hoping we're in New York when Mt. Rainier finally blows. Watch the vlog here now! She Made Me Watch This: Disastrous Women
FYI we'll be taking Labor Day weekend off, which means no video blog next week — but we'll be back the first week in September with vlogs reviewing more fall pilots, and Jodie Foster's The Brave One. Submitted by on August 25, 2007 - 2:16am. |

"Night of the Comet" is a great film, end of the world, Zombies, and Catherine Mary Stewart with a machine gun.
Loved the Pop-up video sound effects.
I so need to watch "Deep Blue Sea".
"Bad jokes are us, ur me."
Comet Chakotay
Great as always. Can you
Great as always.
Can you please shorter the captions' text, or make them appear longer on screen?
Deep Blue Sea
I laughed so hard when you guys were talking Samuel L. Jackson. That was my whole thought exactly about that scene. I'm surprised that I've seen most of these movies... they give me nightmares but I have to admit that I love the genre too.
"Kate Winslet floats in Titanic"
Great vlog though I haven't seen 3/4 of these, it's not my genre of movies (sorry Lori lol). But like always you two were awesome and you could make me watch one of your vlogs discussing flies and I'd love it :)
Oh and can't wait to hear your thoughts on Jodie's new film, The Brave One. The girlfriend and I have been anticipating that one :)
I love Deep Blue Sea (but
I love Deep Blue Sea (but then I love shark films...even though I actually have quite the phobia of sharks...hmm, I obviously have a bit of a masochistic side there ;))
And yeah Volcano is one my fav disaster films ever, love it!
You should try & track down a film (might have been a made-for-tv film) called Superfire, it's like the cheesiest disaster film I've ever seen...though I can't remember if there were many women in it at all...
so loving the blair butler
Deep Blue Sea.
Hahahaha. That movie made the people in Finland really proud (or really embarrassed, depends on how you look at it) because the director is Finnish. Go us :D
I loved this vlog. You two are absolutely spot on with your commentary. And Lori should become my financial advisor (I could really use one right now!!!) *giggles*
Keep up the great work! Oh, and I love the theme song ;) And I cannot wait for your thoughts on the new Jodie piece. That woman rules like it's nobody's business.
Twister...
Awesome again :) I totally
Women of Color in a Disaster Movie
does "Set it Off", count?.

To put it in shane's words:
To put it in shane's words: "That gives me hope, cause I love knowing that two people who've been together for so long can still make each other that happy"
9 years, wow :D
Great one... again!
Deep Impact
Though, I think the only heroic thing Tea Leoni does is give up her seat on the escaping helicopter to Laura Innes and her child. It has Vanessa Redgrave and Morgan Freeman is great as the President.
Side note, Jacqueline Kim also played fan favorite Lao Ma on Xena.
you guys are great
I haven't commented much, but I have to tell you how much I love you two! Seriously, you could be talking about paper clips for 20 minutes and I'd watch.
As for disaster movies, I'm not too much of a fan either (sorry), but I agree that not enough women have the heroic roles and that's really sad. But I'm happy to learn about the ones that do and maybe I'll even have to rent a couple of them.
Oh, and can I just mention how much I love that Lori calls movies "shows"? I love it.
deep impact
What about Tea Leoni's character in Deep Impact? She is the one who figures out what the government is hiding and she saves her work rival and her daughter. A lot of people would have just gotten on the helicopter.
I have always had a problem with Deep Blue because of the shark thing. I love sharks and so I know that that shark they are calling a Mako looks nothing like a Mako. All of those sharks look like Whites and bulls. Bulls aren't really a deep water shark and Mako's don't eat people.
Jacqueline Kim
Didn't she play Lao Ma on Xena?
Thank you!
Yep, she played Lao Ma. She will always be Lao Ma to me. Funny though, apparently, it was only for 2 eps...
~It means pride.~
More favorite disaster movies
Thanks for watching! As you can see, I geek out when I talk about my one of my favorite genres. I love Deep Impact too, it's a favorite, but I wasn't sure if Tea Leoni's character qualified. I was thinking of women in action at the time we compiled our list. I forgot about how she identified the govt conspiracy to hide the impending doom and gave up her seat on the helicopter. I also love Towering Inferno, Armageddon, The Day After Tomorrow, and earthquake. Here's a great list of disaster movies:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_disaster_films
After 9 years together, you'd think I know everything about Sarah. NOT! Clearly there's stuff that she "forgets" to tell me. I bet she has a evil twin I don't know about. I can't believe she didn't tell me about the tornado she was in.
We love geeks.
We love it when you geek out :) And we love it when Sarah rants. What a brilliant combination.
I love Towering Inferno. Now, is there a movie genre you absolutely refuse to get involved with unless heavely sedated?great snakes on a plane reference
im thinking that a virus that turns the world's population into flesh eating zombies constitutes a "disaster" .. so i think mila jovovich deserves honourable mention for resident evil (plus its just sort of fun to watch Tim from the L word turn into a mutant monster)
another job well done ladies. great captions.. particularly loved the mock snakes on a plane reference
Another title for your movie list
Alternate title: Movies that Make Geologists Cringe
The Core, 10.5, and Volcano are all movies that we discuss from time to time to get a good laugh in my classes. The science in these movies is very comical not remotely plausible.
Sorry to destroy anyone's dreams of venturing to the center of the Earth without melting to get the core to spin again.
Durnit
Dude! I was totally planning to do that for my winter vacation! Dangitall.
And, oh yeah, Lori's use of 'shows' reminds me of my Southern (U.S.) relatives. :-)
The Lori in Red
Lori & Sara,
You discussed Twister (1996) and Independence Day (1996), but you missed the opportunity to make a Bill Paxton/Pullman joke! Oh the humanity!
Love the theme music. I chuckle just thinking about it.
Another great feature of Deep Blue Sea: Jacqueline McKenzie (with blond, short hair).
(Ooh, Random factoid! Stellan Skarsgård played Jim Whitlock in Deep Blue Sea and Lena Headey's Dad in Aberdeen.)
Thanks for another fun Saturday morning treat.
So much better than Sat. morning cartoons.
This is going to sound totally weird, but--- whenever I watched Sat. morning cartoons there was this strange sense of purpose, like I had something REALLY important to do that I had waited for all week. Of course- when you realize that all the really good cartoons don't air on Sat Mornings (well cept for "the Batman"), anyways- I haven't had that sense of ZOMG I woke up and its SATURDAY for awhile. But I DID this morning! And it rocked.
(Because apparently I am in confession mode) so I used to live in a neighborhood that includes the La Brea Tar Pits, and my friends and I, on occasion would watch Volcano then walk outside in this ZOMG the world is still here, mind-trippy mode. It only stuck like 3 times, cuz afterwards it felt a little expected.
And yeah- epidemic disaster movies are totally creepy but I love em the same, though both movies are kind of hybrids of other genres anyway, Resident Evil and 12 Monkies (for Madeleine Stowe of course) are both totally rewatchable.
Ha!
Another great job ladies - especially good to see Lori geeking out! Just a suggestion -how about a Jodie retrospective (if that's not too presumptive?) - you can skip Sommersby, though.....
Important question,
What is that book on the shelf behind you? with the woman on the front? It distracted me through every disaster! LOL
And so true that every lesbian movie is a disaster movie. LMAO
Lisa
Anyone who trades liberty for security deserves neither liberty nor security -- B. FranklinNot a book, but a DVD box set
Where to begin?
The Poseidon Adventure was my first disaster movie and so it will always have a place in my heart...and you are right...Shelley Winters rocked the movie!
Now as far as Twister is concerned...another good reason to see Twister...besides Helen Hunt...Jami Gertz (Less Than Zero) in a supporting role.
I did see Outbreak with Rene Russo and Dustin Hoffman...though the reason why I paid the money to see it escapes me at the moment. Anyway, I thought it was bad...there was no chemistry between Russo and Hoffman...and even the great supporting cast of Morgan Freeman, Kevin Spacey, and Donald Sutherland could not save the movie.
This was a great vblog topic...interesting how you could and do appreciate the tv movies with Kim Delaney. While I have been a fan of her work...for the most part...(loved her show Philly)...since her days on All My Children...I did not think the movies were worth watching but now I might hunt them down and watch.
The new theme song music is...ummmm...interesting...love the made-up facts...lol...OH...and I want to give you a big thanks for also providing the link to veoh...so I could finally start watching the vblogs here on the site. For some reason, I get a big old blue Q with a white question mark in the middle of it for the vid clips otherwise and miss out on a lot and have no clue as to how I could fix that. Thus I do so appreciate the veoh link for your vblog as well as the others!
Hilarious! I really love
Not true!
About Harry Potter: Brit actresses who haven't so far appeared in it - Keira Knightly, Kate Winslet, Sienna Miller, Vanessa Redgrave, Helen Mirren....and so on....But I take your point :)
I'm not a fan of disaster movies; tuned in just to watch Sarah and Lori have a good old chinwag..and secrets coming out, hah!
I like Rituximab's idea about a Jodie Foster retrospective (Goddess knows she's been in enough movies to last a week of back to back screenings!) ...ie.if both of u like her too (is it possible for a lesbian not to like her?)
No "i" in team
There's no "i" in Teamocil either. At least not where you'd think! ;) For all the Arrested Development fans out there.
The only thing I remember from "Twister" was the giant cow being twirled around and moo-ing.
Volcano & Airport 75
Loving the vlogs! I thought you guys would mention the colleague for Ann Heche in Volcano looking a little bit gay. She had the short hair and glasses anyway. Unfortunately she did fall into that hot, steaming crack in the earth.
Also, Lori, did you see Airport 75 with Karen Black as the courageous flight attendant? Maybe she wasn't strong enough for your list because she did cry while flying the plane. She saved the passengers by not crashing the plane until the Male pilot could be stuffed through that hole in the plane and he landed it and saved the day. She was the transitional hero, then I guess.
Please keep amusing us with the pop up facts and hilarious comments. You could turn the vlog into headline news format and have pop ups, a crawl, and a green screen behind you both. Too much??
Even better with 10.5
It sounds like it actually fits the Bechdel movie criteria - you know, two women who talk to each other about something other than a man. Nice going!
Actually, it's also interesting to reflect on how well sci-fi movies do comparatively with the women-of-colour thing - Aliens, X-men, Serenity, Matrix (2 and 3), Strange Days (Angela Bassett mmm hmm) ...
geek out
I loved this vlog because all the movies you named...I've watched so I'm in the know...also I love how lori geeks out in this and not just over money...and how I was sitting here geeking out as well pointing out the same things lori was like a second before she said them..
I also loved the fact that after 9 years together you guys still have things to learn about one another...which I think if there is still a bit of mystery in a relationship is always a plus...
oh and the made up facts are just too funny for words
*bloop*
haha. great vlog. i love disaster movies.
my favorite parts are when lori has her little lightbulb moment and the pop-up-video sound effects.
A vlog after my own heart.
Man oh MAN do I love disaster movies. Though she didn't save anyone from anything, Victoria Principal gets points for Earthquake, wherein she rocks black leather and an afro.
I have such a hard time choosing a favorite disaster flick- I mean, who do I love the most? Earthquake? Virus for the George Kennedy-ness and Olivia Hussey-ness? Concorde: Airport '79, the film that featured Martha Raye and Jimmie Walker, together at last? The Towering Inferno, featuring the power of Faye Dunaway? Or maybe The Swarm, featuring the power of bees?
It's like asking a mother to choose her favorite child. I'll just hang all their pictures on my fridge.
Awsome theem music.
I totally just added The Core to my netfilx, don't know how I ever missed it.
And Sara, how could you have not told your tornado story a thousand times by now? Seriously In Fargo, ND of all places! That's the kind of story you use to shock boring cocktail parties into action.
Side note on Twister, Joss Whedon helped hammer out the dialog.
Also, If Independence Day counts, so dose Resident Evil.
Also, also, Mary Macdonald=foreshadowing on Hillary Clinton? (First lady to President)

Non-disastrous Disaster Movies
I love disaster movies! I may have a particular weakness for volcano movies. Mostly that's because Dante's Peak will always have a special place in my heart. I mean, who can overlook the grandmother in that movie? She's a classic. She jumps out of the boat into the highly acidic water when they're about five feet from shore, so they would have made it safely anyway, but no...She jumps into the water anyway, trying to play hero...If she was gonna do that, she should have done it sooner...But it helps make the movie. The Towering Inferno is another one of my loves (though, not a volcano, I know). I mean, it has Faye Dunaway, Fred Astaire, OJ Simpson-pre-craziness-and-pre-murder, and did I mention Faye Dunaway? Twister is another one of my disaster-loves (again, not a volcano one, I know)...I've actually been to where that movie was filmed, so I think that helped cement its place in my heart.
I love this episode, as pretty much always. And I like that the snappy comments are back, even if they have misspelled words this round.
Locusts with Lucy Lawless
If you're going to include genetically altered sharks, then ya gotta include genetically altered locusts. It was actually pretty good for a made for TV movie. It stars Lucy Lawless as a Dr. Maddy Rierdon, an investigator for the sexy Department of Agriculture. She has to find a way to stop a huge swarm of genetically altered locusts that eats everything in it's path.

Independence Day
OMG!
Twister
Anyhow, I enjoyed Twister for what it was but I am pretty sure the scene near the end was impossible. If I remember correctly they're in shambles that used to be a basement, or some such shelter, held to a twisted pipe by a belt as they ride out the tornado over head. I am a lover of fantasy as much as the next person but it needs to be laced with a hint of realism. The leather in that belt had to be made from the hide of a golden cow (poor cow!) or perhaps some NASA developed material given only to this storm chaser because his pants are just that important to the world. If cars, cows, and houses are flying over head I just can't believe there is a belt so awesome it could hold two people down. Other than that it was an okay flick.
I'd of loved for Deep Impact to make the list. I actually saw that one twice in theaters because who wouldn't love to see Morgan Freeman as president and at the time I absolutly LOVED Tia Leoni (because of my X-Files fetish) who played a scientist named Jenny. It was your classic disaster turned survivor film however it made things interesting with a lottery to see who gets to survive. I hated the ending to the film because she could of saved herself but didn't. Who chooses to die along with their estranged father? The whole tidal wave coming at them at the end and destoryed White House was just brilliant. The circumstances of the movie were plausible and she did a lot of people saving and looked pretty cute to boot.

I love all the 70s disaster movies
It's great to see all the disaster movie people come out to comment! I, too, love Airport 75, even 77 and the Concorde. And Towering Inferno, who doesn't love that one. Deep Impact, well, yes, I should have included Tea Leoni, because she does have heroic moments in there. She's one of my favorite actors. I loved her in The Naked Truth that also starred Holland Taylor (who has an amazing voice BTW).
Did anyone know....

Daylight
What about Daylight with Amy Brenneman and others trapped in a tunnel? Stallone is the lead, but Brenneman has her moments.
