In honor of actress Michelle Pfeiffer's return to the big screen in Hairspray (2007) and Stardust (2007), Lori and I have devoted the second segment of this week's video blog (watch the first one here) to discussing some of the highlights of her acting career. We cover cult classics like Ladyhawke (1985), Grease 2 (1982), and Batman Returns (1992); period pieces like The Age of Innocence (1993) and Dangerous Liaisons (1988); career misses like The Sum of Us (1999) and What Lies Beneath (2000); and a few of her more random films like The Fabulous Baker Boys (1989) and Dangerous Minds (1995). For brevity's sake — and because it's our vlog and we can be selective if we want to — we haven't included all of Michelle's films in our discussion (I might have added Married to the Mob and Frankie and Johnny to the list, for example, if we'd had more time). But between her Pink Ladies jacket, her Catwoman leather, and her Fabulous red dress, there should be something here for everyone.
Now I'm going to have "Cool Rider" in my head all night.... She Made Me Watch This! Michelle Pfeiffer Retrospective

very hot !
"Don't toot your horn honey, you're not that good"
What! No Elvira from Scarface? That's my favorite Michelle Pfeiffer role of all time <3
I'm probably in the minority here when I say I don't like either versions of Grease, right?
I love Sarah's passion for women's issues :)
"music soothes the savage beast"
I'm coming out of the "closet"...
so you're the other one!
So you're the other person in the world that loved The Pirate Movie!!!
I found the soundtrack to that on LP at a flea market a few years ago and got so excited that the guy sold it to me for a dollar. A Canadian dollar.
I love me some Kristy.
"This is show business?"
I grew up on Grease 2 (and The Pirate Movie, too) also - Michelle should wear leather jackets more often. I need to put a plug in for Witches of Eastwick - Jack, Cher, Susan, and Michelle in a funny, somewhat dark film. Lori also touched on Tequila Sunrise a bit and while that isn't a great film by any means, it's worth watching for the shot of Michelle coming out of a steamy hot tub. And, I saw Married to the Mob was mentioned in the short intro text and I love that movie (though Matthew Modine annoys the crap outta me in it): Michelle with her cute New York accent, and Alec and Mercedes are hilarious. Must agree with Sarah on To Gillian on Her 37th Birthday - hot ghost. Also, I will plug I Am Sam only for Michelle in glasses.
At the moment, I'm debating about whether to put my extensive collection of Michelle Pfeiffer movie posters up for sale on Ebay.
Thanks guys!
And how about "wolf"? Not only was she a great cat woman but also a great wolf woman! How's that for range? ;)
Very entertaining vlog once again! My favourite line.."and also it's just fun!" Says it all right there! :)
"call me old fashioned but I prefer feminism that leaves a little something to the imagination!"
I couldn't agree more with
And give "Being John Malkovich" a chance, it's really not focused on Malkovich at all. It's an odd little movie, but I liked it. Catherine Keener's character is hilarious and reason enough for me to watch it (while most people will find her character completely unlikeable, I find a wicked sense of humor to be entirely endearing).
Totally agree on both
Totally agree on both points. Although the worst sketches on MadTV are worse that those on SNL, I find their social commentary hilarious. Thanks for the youtube link.
"Being John Malkovich" is one of the most interesting movies I have watched. I would highly recommend it. The characters may not be very likeable, but that is one of the reasons I like the movie so much.
Sarah and Lori are my idols
This has probably been said a million times on this website, but I still feel compelled to say it...something about these AWESOME video blogs.
I found this website just over a year ago and quickly became addicted to it. I think it's amazing Sarah has put this website together. She took something she was interested in and turned it into a successful business. In doing so, she's also created an incredible community for us.
This website is all about visibility for lesbian and bisexual women in entertainment. And we all feel slightly victorious whenever we see a lesbian or bisexual actress on t.v. or see a lesbian or bisexual character. Personally, I think it's so admirable to see lesbian women like Sarah, Lori, and the other writers, successful in everyday life and accessible enough for us to read and see (love the vlog!) every week. Many of us don't have out and successful lesbians to look up to in everyday careers. She and her partner Lori Grant (i just discovered smartlemming.com and am devouring it as quickly as possible) are incredible representatives for our community and really for all women. Your websites are amazing. Thank you so much.
"you have to laugh at yourself, otherwise you'd cry your eyes out." - emily saliers
amen.
Lori, I couldn't agree more with your statements about Michelle as Catwoman. She was by far the best one (sorry Julie Newmar and Eartha Kitt), and only out done in evil-beauty by Uma Thurman as Poison Ivy.
I agree with Kaisa, you gals should give 'Being John Malkovich' a shot, it's fairly good. If you were able to sit through 'What Lies Beneath' you're able to sit through anything.
I’m off to find Grease2... and I’m not 16 :)
Materialising
see me? i'd say
so i openly love Grease two better than grease one,
and i totally have "Cool Rider", "Turn Back the Hands of Time" and "Let's Do It For Our Country" on my iPod.
and i'm 16 and i've been watching grease & grease 2 since i was five, blame my mother.
Michelle Pfeiffer
You gals are awesome
At first I was skeptical about your vloggin but y'all have been awesome. And Sarah, I want your t-shirt. It's so adorable.
As for Michelle Pfeiffer, I had to watch her Catwoman performance in Batman Returns for an acting class. I got so very smitten.
Thanks for the recommendations!
Pfeiffer Pfever
Loved Grease and Grease 2, especially Grease 2, though I'd never admit it to anyone who actually knew me, and of course her version of Catwoman in Batman Returns, her performance was simply Purrr-fect, pity Miss Berry didn't follow her example - Grumble, Grumble, Gripe, Gripe. ;P

What about....
I loved her in Up Close and Personal also. Especially after the haircut. :)
I love your vblog Sarah and Lori!

Into the Night
Anybody else seen or like this movie? Directed by John Landis and co-stars Jeff Goldblum. As for Michelle's outfit in the movie...at one point she is completely naked. But even if she was in a nun's habit, I would still find this crazy movie about insomnia, depression, and emerald-stealing entertaining.
Grease 2...
Cool Ridin' forever!
Grease 2 is definitely a gulity pleasure of mine, but it's NOT better than Grease!...sorry Sarah...What Lies Beneath wasn't that bad...
Love you girls!

I love Michelle, too!
Thank you so much for your retrospective on Michelle Pfeiffer. God knows she's been the queen of my heart ever since I was like 12. (Of course I used to tell my friends that I just admire her acting... well, that too, and drooling over her gorgeousness.) I think Batman Returns and catwoman had a lot to do with me realizing my budding lesbian tendencies at that age. She's hot. And Lori, Batman returns dvd, screencaps and desktop images, been there, done that...
I agree with The Story of Us being the worst of her movies, it is horrible and insufferable but still I've seen it twice. What can I say, the sheer pain of watching a bad movie just disappears when Michelle enters the screen...
One movie that I personally liked a lot and that you left out is White Oleander. She is gorgeous in it, dangerous and like a psychopath, but still absolutely amazing. And I have to admit that I like Upclose and Personal as well, even though I do find Robert Redford somewhat disgusting.
Anyway, thanks for the great vlog and thanks for afterellen.com. I'm from Finland and even though overall this country is quite accepting towards gays and lesbians, we are not very visible in the media. So far none of the cable companies even offer Logo or other gay & lesbian channels anywhere. And there are no magazines available (well, not unless you count the "adult" material for gay men). So you know how great it is to have a website like this available! Can't wait for She said what? to return!
huh
alright so ill probably get stoned for saying that im not a huge michelle pfeiffer fan...i couldnt even recall ever having seen a michelle pfeiffer movie
i really only hit the play button on this edition of SMMWT to see if Sarah was going to lay the smackdown on anybody else and to read what Loris shirt said cause the screencap wasnt big enough.
with that having been said though.. i watched it in its entirety and quite enjoyed myself... and much to my amazement i find out that michelle pfeiffer was in grease 2?? ..when the hell did that happen? .. i actually own this movie and hadnt yet come to this realization.. apparently ive been living under a continent sized rock for the past 20 years.. at least i knew she was catwoman.. although im still not sure that thats enough to redeem me at this point. : |
One Too Many?
Well I can honestly say that kids are still being subjected to 'One too Many'. I watched it in...9th grade I think, five years ago mayhaps, during the week we learned all about drunk driving and such. It was a very tragic little movie but still not as eye-openning as what they showed us during 11th grade.
Public schools no longer fund sports?
Dangerous Liaisons...
Dangerous Liaisons was the only movie that I remember my parents wouldn't allow me to see. I was 8 at the time, but when I finally did see it it was definitely worth it. There's something sexy about women in costume dramas, especially Michelle Pfieffer.
I too had reservations about seeing "Being John Malkovich," but it really is a good movie. It's really not about John Malkovich, he's more the conduit that drives the narrative along. Plus, Catherine Keener...really damn hot. I suggest watching both movies.
pfeiffer fan
great classic film
Hiya Sarah, Lori et al
If you are looking for a great film then watch the 1967's film 'To Sir with Love', it is a British film about a Black teacher in the late 60's who teaches white high school kids and how he changes their live by showing and treating them with respect.
It is one of the best films of it's time and even today, is still a wonderful film to watch!!
cheers
Liz
Buy Dangerous Liasons
You'll love it. It's not sci-fi, and it's not cheerful, but it is excellent. John Malkovich and Glenn Close are perfectly dastardly, it is witty, and psychological, and the costumes are fab. As are the locations. And, of course, Michelle Pfeiffer is excellent.
I'll second the above commenter re To Sir With Love. A really nice reversal of the white knight trope, and you have to remember the context of increasing West Indian immigration into the UK at the time.
Sarah and Lori
Hi!
I have been a more or less regular visitor to AfterEllen for about the past year now .
Have just now registered because I want to express my thanks and appreciation for the great website you have built here.
It is obvious you put alot of love and effort into it but what is so refreshing is to see how much fun you have with it too!
Also, I subscribed to your vlog on VEOH a couple of weeks ago and I just love it. You two are such a cute couple, very witty and also very funny.
So, again, thanks so much for entertaining and informing me in such a delightful way.
Another Good Pheiffer Film
One not mentioned on your vlog, but one of my personal favorites is "WHITE OLEANDER".
A dark and dangerous drama about the upside/down troubled relationship between a mother and daughter.
IMO, one of Michelle's best performances.
yes!
A Little Off Topic
Once at three a.m. my mom got a phone call from a woman for my father. When my mom asked who it was she replied
"It's Michelle Pfeiffer."
nice blog
It's truely a sad day when her attractiveness is not enough to stop me from giving the used disc as a donation to the library rental bin. I fear for the poor souls who check out my throw away dvds.
ONJ + Catwoman screencaps= Lori for the win.
Feel free to snag this fan button I've made.
This one was fun
Thanks again for all the cool comments! I'll definitely check out the other movies you all recommended. This vlog was especially fun to do. I'll use any opportunity to go on a tangent about Michelle Pfeiffer as Catwoman. Makkun, I love the button! And thank you for the validation about ONJ too. :)
