News, Reviews & Commentary on Lesbian and Bisexual women in Entertainment and the Media

She Made Me Watch This! TV ROUNDUP: "Degrassi", "The Bionic Woman", "Life" and more.

In this week's video blog, Lori and I disagree on who should win Hell's Kitchen, I defend My Boys, and Lori rants about Paige in the Degrassi season six finale.

Then as part of our ongoing previews of the new fall pilots, we extol the quirky virtues of Pushing Daisies (ABC), wonder how it's possible to have screwed up a remake of The Bionic Woman (although Katee Sackhoff is brilliant as Michelle Ryan's arch-nemesis) and debate Sarah Shahi's new buttoned-up look in Life.

Before you watch our vlog, check out the trailers for these new fall shows:

Pushing Daisies (ABC)

The Bionic Woman (NBC)

Now watch our take on the pilots (no major spoilers revealed)...

Oh, and you may notice some slight problems with the audio in this episode (an occasional buzzing sound). Sorry about that! The good news is that we've finally decided to upgrade to a much better camera (and microphone), so in our next video blog, we'll be coming at you with crystal-clear audio and video. It'll be like watching the Discovery Channel's Shark Week in high-def, but with more lesbians and less biting! And no water. Or high-def. But otherwise, exactly the same.

    "The Casting Couch"

Very subtle, funny Sarah :) It may cast a new light on how Lori made it to the vlog...

(I hope my remark doesn't fall into the "annoying user comment" category and you won't get destructive after reading this.)

Btw, you are really cute when you're squabbling. Happy weekend!

    I would go with Bunny

I would go with Bunny System. Scale doesn't seem to apply because they don't really adhere to a step rating scheme that well.

I am am kinda made about the sister change in Bionic Woman myself. They fired Anne(Mae Whitman)!!!!

Monkey-Ninja! I more jealous of you, Sarah, every week. You got yourself an amazing lady there.

    annoying user comment

annoying user comment (Sarah, honey, I love you, you're great, but I have to say this): can we have like a system where Sarah gets to speak 2 min and then Lori 2 min and Sarah is not allowed to interrupt just when Lori is about to make her point. And also when Lori wants to speak and Sarah doesn't give her a chance can we have the resident bunny give Sarah a "WTF, Lori's not just the cheerleader!"

neutral user comment: You've made me watch Hell's Kitchen (did a marathon of the current series) and I have to say that I am not at all convinced that Rock should win. the way I see it Bonnie likes to play the ditsy blonde act but she's not weak or stupid. I mean just having the balls to apply for this show gets her my vote. I'm always rooting for the underdog but equally I've got a problem with how sure Rock is of himself and that she should win it (not least because he's a man). Anyway, who's to say that Rock would make better use of the opportunity? if success was so predictable you wouldn't have somebody like ...say .. Martha Stewart.

    Bionic Woman...

    Hi Lori and Sarah!

I have to say I disagree with your take on "Bionic Woman." I loved it. Like, really loved it. I do agree that Michelle Ryan wasn't that spectacular, but I think her character was written sort of oddly -- in the beginning she was just too meek. I also think that changing the deaf sister to one who isn't deaf actually makes sense, because originally she was going to be deaf solely in order to make Michelle Ryan's character capable of sign language to talk to chimpanzees or something. Yeah, that sounds ridiculous. So it's good that isn't going to be in the show anymore (the chimpanzees).

I don't recall being annoyed by the boyfriend, either, but honestly, I was probably totally enthralled by Katee Sackhoff the entire time and may not have been able to make a rational analysis. :) She did more than steal the show -- she should really have her own show, in my opinion. And yeah, there was a LOT of lesbian subtext between the two of them. I would probably watch anything Katee is in, though, so take my opinion with a grain of salt!

    Walking_Contradiction's picture

    I'm actually really

I'm actually really interested in seeing the bionic woman. The trailer at the beginning of the post caught my attention (I will admit it was probably more to do with the deaf sister rather than any thing else) I really hope they don't cut the sister. We are always grousing about lack of LGBT characters on mainstream TV, deaf characters are even more rare.

I love you two...you make my saturday (or sunday) entertaining. Keep up the good work on the v-blog!

    :)

    Re: The Sister

They didn't dump the sister entirely. The recast(with Lucy Hale), and made her bit of a hacker.

This is copied from the www.bionicwebsite.com -

At Zap2It.com, producer Jason Smilovic talked about the change and the reason that Becca had been deaf in the first place.

“Without going into too much detail, it’s that we wanted to create an organic way for — Jaime was originally working in a lab,” Smilovic said. ”She was going to be assigned to these chimpanzees. The chimpanzees were going to Dr. Anthros, to this gentleman right here [co-star Chris Bowers], who was using them for experimentation. He would come down to get the chimpanzees and he would — you know, they sort of fell in love during that time. And we were looking for a — an organic way for her to be talking to the chimpanzees in sign language. Of course, the chimpanzees disappeared. The lab disappeared [in the version with Whitman]. The deaf sister stayed, but now she’s disappeared as well.”

    Pilots

I loved the little bunny smackdown you had going on there... haha.

Pushing Daisies looks really promising.  I hesitate to get attached though; it seems like everytime a quirky show like this comes up it only lasts a maximum of 2-3 years before it's unexpectedly hacked - Dead Like Me, Arrested Development etc. etc. etc.  I love that Jim Dale is narrating - I have all 7 Harry Potter books on my iPod... that lovely British man reads me to sleep at night...

People who have seen Damian Lewis who plays the lead in Life in other things (ie. Band of Brothers) might find him a little more accessible.  He's a solid actor and I think he should be able to pull a show like this off.  Give him time!

    OMG, I love Damian Lewis,

OMG, I love Damian Lewis, he's been like my man-crush ever since I saw Band of Brothers for the first time. I've seen the miniseries like 5 times after that. It's amazing! He's a really good actor and can definitely carry a show. I'm a bit shocked that neither of you guys knew about Band of Brothers. Shiis.

I saw the pilot for Pushing Daisies and it's DEFINITELY a show I'll be tuning into. Possibly the funniest and quirkiest shows of the season if not ever. Bionic Woman... meeh. I have to say, I think they made a huge mistake casting the chick that's the lead, she's a bit of a... well, not all that good an actress. But I'll give it another go, I guess. Nothing can be as bad as the damn Painkiller Jane.

Life, haven't seen the pilot but I thought that the four minute intro looked really interesting and I kind of like the premise and the cast. Could be somn good, so I'll tune in.

I still can't get over the fact that Sarah didn't recognize Damian Lewis from Band of Brothers. Shocking, shocking I say!

    Connie Huynh's picture

    I liked the bionic woman

I liked the bionic woman preview also. It was really fast paced and the smackdown b/t the two women kinda reminded me of Buffy and Faith. I am also sad though that they are taking out the deaf sister, it gave the character more depth. Her boyfriend is anoying though b/c he brought her back, I just want to tell him to let go, sheesh.

Pushing Daisies seems interesting, but more like it should be made for a movie b/c I'm afraid that the quirkyness will get anoying after a while, either that or I will like it.

The guy in life seems like a donkey's butt to me, although he has good reason, but his partner seems cool.

I also agree w/ Munky, Lori should get to talk more w/out interuptions.

    A bit of random

A bit of random trivia...Damian Lewis's dad Watcyn is Welsh, and he went to school with my mum. Only a celt could have that hair!!! Damian Lewis is definately better known over here but he was amazing in Band of Brothers (I think it was an HBO/BBC series??) ...he played the really likeable Major Winters. I loved him in that, bought the box set, seen it a million times, in my opinion one of the best tv series in years, yada yada yada.. I thought you might have recognised him from that?! ....and a quick mention to Sarah Shahi *swoon*
    moviegrl's picture

    Re Bionic Woman

I didn't think the deaf sister (Mae Whitman gets the short end of the stick by no fault of her own..) character could work for the long haul of this show. It certainly was interesting but the pilot on a whole was clunky. The lead Michelle Ryan is blah. Sackhoff is the best part of the pilot....you kinda wish she was the main character by the end.

    no_one80's picture

    Another great blog...

I have to agree about Bonnie having pretty much no chance of winning "Hell's Kitchen".  Rock will win.

As for the fall pilots you talked about, I will be checking them out and I hope I like at least one of them.

I'm looking forward to Karman's video blog about "South of Nowhere".  It should be a good one.

    Bionic Woman

I agree with you regarding the Bionic Woman pilot. Unfortunately the BW herself I find rather insipid. Little to no screen presence. Katee Sackhoff totally stole the show. As one of my friends said, 'they should make it the evil bionic woman show and have Michelle Ryan guest star occasionally'.

I'm also disappointed regarding the cutting of the deaf sister as I was really pleased to see a disabled character initially included.

I'm now looking forward to The Sarah Connor Chronicles much more than the Bionic Woman (although I'm looking forward to the last season of Battlestar Galactica even more).

    I also loved the pre-air

I also loved the pre-air episode of bionic woman and I really hope there won't be many changes!

I am not a fan of Sarah Shahi but the guy was very good in Band of Brother's, I agree with Ruggedascent! He is a solid actor and Life looks like it could be a good show!

And it is fun to see Lori become more outspoken! :)

Sarah needs to share her sandbox more with Lori

I think Sarah and Lori are adorable and very likable in their weekly videos together but I have to agree that Sarah tends to interrupt and talk over Lori (something about 90 percent of the planet are guilty of.)

Sarah, you've got to give your sweetie time to finish her sentence or viewpoint before interjecting your comments. I know you founded afterellen.com but when ya invite someone in to share your sandbox or soapbox, you've got to share your airtime. You've become Siskel to Lori's Ebert. You need listen more, and give Lori more airtime.

    SophieSt.Lucas's picture

I totally get what you are

I totally get what you are saying.... but to be fair to SW, I do that at the time. It's not meaning to be rude, she's just excited about the topics/issues that she has an opinion on. Also Lori doesn't seem to mind all that much either! (I could be totally wrong here, but as a twin I'm used to finishing others sentences, and having mine finished for me. Not quite the same but you get my drift?! lol.) I think it's endearing anyway.  :)

    damien lewis

I've actually seen damien lewis in a couple of things: Much ado about nothing (Modern shakespeare adaptation), Friends and crocodiles, The forsythe saga and Hearts and bones (which was really good! I love Sarah Parish. She's in my top 100 list!). (I watch BBC a lot as Belgian Tv mostly sucks) You have to get used to him because he often pays weird characters, but he's a really good actor.

Hopefully Bionic woman will be shown over here as I love Katee.

    Doc McG's picture

    Bionic Woman

First a note: They've dropped the "The". It's just Bionic Woman.

In any case, I found the pilot painful. The only characters who were enjoyable were the supports: Will Yun Lee, Molly Price, and Katee Sackhoff. My biggest fear is they won't be able to improve the show because they're stuck with Michelle Ryan and Dr Boyfriend. Their acting was lame, lame, lame (and their relationship bordered on Squickville).

It irked me no end that BW got so much more Comic-Con press than The Sarah Connor Chronicles, which was far, far better. I'm still trying to figure out how/why the SCC pilot looked so much more polished and complete than BW, which looked thrown together in the wee hours.

Life intrigues yet confuses me. Is it as comedic as the preview makes it seem?

    sarahwarn's picture

    Thanks for the feedback!

I haven't seen Band of Brothers yet, but clearly I need to, based on how many of you recommend it!

I agree with Malinda that dropping the monkeys is a good move for Bionic Woman, and that this is what led to dropping the deaf sister, I just think it would be cool to see more deaf characters on TV. At any rate, my main issue with the show was just how boring the first half was, but since they're re-tooling significant portions of the pilot, this may not be a problem anymore when the series airs. And Lori and I both agree with zefbot that they should build a show just around Katee Sackhoff's evil bionic woman!

Doc McG, Life isn't a comedy, it's definitely a drama, but it does have some funny moments (more than most cop dramas do).

To clarify the "annoying user comment" comment I made in the video, 99% of the comments on this site are great, including all of the ones above. There's just the occasional one that drives me crazy, especially when I've had a long day - like asking me to defend the socio-political statement of the default avatar. :)

Finally, re: the comments about me interrupting Lori too much - it's true, I totally do that, but it's the pattern of communication we've developed after 9 years together (she starts the idea and I finish it). But interrupting less is one of the things I'm working on, along with remembering to put my dirty dishes directly into the dishwasher when I'm done with them, instead of leaving them on the counter. :) In my defense, Lori insists on wearing Star Wars t-shirts in public!

    gooby's picture

Star Wars is cool, damn it!

I must come to Lori's defense here, what's wrong with Star Wars T-shirts?! They are cool! In fact, you might wanna get her one of these Star Wars Boogie t-shirts if you wanna be a good girlfriend :D
    Aljan's picture

    While you're at it

I first saw Damian Lewis in The Forsyte Saga and he is definitely less likable as Soames Forsyte. In fact I would say that this role has forever coloured my opinion of poor Damian, so if Australia ever gets Life then he will have to work hard for me to change it. If you want to see more of Damian Lewis that isn't all feel goody then I'd check this out.

    First Posting EVER

S&L, love y'all. Love the bunnies, squabbling, speech overlapping, diverse taste, teasing, and everything of yourselves that you bring to the vblog. The two of you are so cute together.

I have been coming here since the week you went "Live". I even signed up a few times, but always ended up forgetting my logon because I never actually used it. This time around I have been better, I even did a profile.

But the reason I posted, was to ask if "She Made Me..." will be available on ITunes? I actually enjoy re-watching your episodes and it would be great to watch them on the go.

Sarah, I emphatise in regards to the "annoying comments." Since I find that reading them irritates the hell out of me, it must be even more so when they are aimed at you or AfterEllen staff. Many a times I have wanted to verbally slap a user over a comment, but I have been good about not stooping to their level.

    Keep up the good work.

    Hell's Kitchen

Bonnie, FTW! But I think Rock will win. If you look at the history of the show, the person who has won the last individual challenge has always lost but that's just speculation.

I never thought that Virginia had a chance to win against Heather because 1)she was horrible during service and 2)she picked a horrible team. I mean she told K-Grease and co that she only picked them because they sucked and that that would show her superior leadership skills which backfired on her and also made K-Grease blackmail her with her own prize money.

The way I see Bonnie vs. Rock, their teams are pretty even. It's all up to Julia to perform her best and not sabotage Bonnie (she wants Rock to win). If she does that would make her more of a sore loser than she is now. Julia doesn't even seem grateful that she got a consolation prize for her losing. Everyone wanted to win and the rest of the people walked away with nothing.

    Hi Lori and Sarah!!

    Hey Ladies,

Well I must say being a complete and total chick based science fiction obsessive, you two are pretty much on the money where "Bionic Woman" is concerned. It is pretty much a recycling of piles of stuff we've all seen before. It actually felt like there was a kernel of something groundbreaking in there at one point but it got whitewashed out...or something. Sadly I will likley still watch if just for Katee Sackhoff and because there is just so plain little on TV where the girl or woman is at the forefront (never mind lesbians at that!)...

As for the comments on Paige, I have to defend her for just a moment here...let's not forget that she is only 17. And being that she likely comes from a family very similar socio-econimically to my own I can say from experience that our parents have a funny way of being able to blind us from the 'other' with kid-glove treatment. I think a lot of what may be interpreted as selfishness from her is actually naivitee. Anyways, I do love this couple. And it does make me extra proud to see that a product (part of a television dynasty up here actually) from my country continues to break boundaries and creates meaningful storylines 20 some years later. Hint: our teenages are actually played by teenagers who have input in to their character developement!!  OK! that really is enough grandstanding for this Canuck!

Once again, you two rock. Keep up the great work!!!!

    Bionic Woman

I saw the pilot for Bionic Woman at ComiCon and I thought it ROCKED!! Katee is going to give Hudson Leick a run for her money as the wickedest female villian ever.

They are changing the actress for the deaf sister not cutting that character.

    Katee Sackhoff

"Katee Sackhoff totally stole the show. As one of my friends said, 'they should make it the evil bionic woman show and have Michelle Ryan guest star occasionally'."

I suspect that the only reason they didn't cast Sackhoff as the lead is because she's kinda preoccupied with Battlestar Galactica.

re My Boys: only seen a few episodes but I'm not taken by it at all. It lacks substance. And it's not that funny. It only makes me miss Out of Practice more. Which some might say didn't have that much substance and wasn't that funny either but anyway it had not one, not two but three terrific ladies in it. Can someone remind me why did they cancel it?

    The British are taking over

Both Anna Friel and Michelle Ryan, once upon a time, were infamous for their lesbain kissing on British Soap Operas (not with each other)!

Anna Friel was one half of the first pre-watershed lesbian kiss on British network TV, when she played Beth Jordace on Brookside in the early 90s. This was Before Ellen.

And in a moment worthy of US Sweeps, Michelle Ryan's character in Eastenders kissed her best mate on the New Year's Eve episode of 2003. They both figured out that they werent lesbians, they just thought they were going to die!

    cakeordeath's picture

    Lots of stuff

    First comment:

I'm sad Michelle Ryan is in the "Bionic Woman" if the show is a clunker. She left a great show ("Jekyll" on BBC America) to do this one, and I will miss her on "Jekyll." Maybe she plans on doing both? And my 2 cents on Jekyll--bloody brilliant. James Nesbitt is just the right shade of dangerous lunatic, so you never know what Mr. Hyde is going to do. Plus, it has a great mixed-race lesbian couple in it.

    Second comment:

Damien Lewis is not to be missed in "Band of Brothers." It is absolutely one of the best mini-series ever put on TV. I'd skip "Dreamcatcher" tho...

    Third Comment:

While Lee Pace was good on "Wonderfalls" it didn't really showcase his talent. Check out his stellar performance as Calpernia Addams in "Soldier's Girl." Before I knew who he was, I watched this film, and thought he was a real transsexual. How they got those boobs to look so real, I'll never know...

I havent seen anything other an the trailer for BW.  I wasnt planning on watching it but now that Ive seen some ass kicking action I may tune in on occasion.  I really despise remakes.. degrassi

i totally agree with you guys. Paige was really starting to bug me. She's always bugged me, but this season was the worst because you thought that she might have changed a little, but she hasn't. She still only cares about herself and can't even see that her dead sexy and awesome girlfriend needs help! oh paige. And i also agree on the Alex femming up a little thing. I like her now, but she did seem more lesbian they way she was before. But i'm glad those god aweful GIANT hoop earings are finally gone. haha and sarah, i read that ENTIRE degrassi blog. It was super long. But i really did enjoy reading it, it made me think more about the show. Totally worth all 8 pages or so. Nice job!

Pushing Daisies seems good, but how on earth are they gunna create the show around the two love birds, if they can't even touch each other! it might get real old, real boring, fast.

oh, and Sara and Lori are hilarious!

    Dots58's picture

    Awesome . . .

So this is my first time catching one of these vlogs, and I loved it! It totally feeds my TV addiction, and in a gay way, to boot!

I agree with pretty much everything you said about Degrassi. I've watched the show since season 1, and although I've had a pretty major crush on Paige for quite a while, I don't really feel she's grown as a character or an actress all that much. Every time she calls someone "hon" I wanna smack her. I also think the writers tend to be pretty inconsistant and one-dimensional with their characterization, which I think accounts for a lot of characters, Paige included, acting totally ridiculous when they should obviously be sympathetic. It also drives me crazy that they only focus on two sets of characters at a time, and completely drop the story line in the episodes following, but that's another issue entirely . . .

Oh, and btw, you've probably seen it already, but if you haven't you have to check out Sugar Rush (from the UK) for a truly, truly good teen lesbian show. Both the acting and the writing are far and away the best I've seen dealing with this subject matter.

LOVE this little preview of the upcoming shows. Pushing Daisies looks AMAZING. I was totally sold, even before Kristin Chenoweth popped up, pretty much guaranteeing it a spot in my fall lineup.

I wasn't planning on watching The Bionic Woman at all until I heard that Katee Sackhoff was going to be in it. She's worth wading through even the worst television dreck to watch. Even though I think I'll always prefer her in her BSG uniform. Or even better, her BSG tank top.

And, Life must just have a really good preview, because it looked a lot better in that little teaser that you put up than what you ended up describing. I'm really tired of procedurals, so I'm hoping maybe this one will have enough witty banter to distract from that. And maybe even, dare I say it, some character development? (Anything but that!)

I do have to chime in on the Damian Lewis love. He was simply adorable in the update of Much Ado About Nothing (which is on DVD in the US now), and his American accent is so good!

And Sarah Shahi is good and all (never was all that into her on The L Word), but I was surprised you didn't mention the other actress in the show who recently played a lesbian: Deadwood's Calamity Jane (also known as Robin Weigert). She's such an awesome actress, I'm sure she'll raise the bar for this show at least a little bit. If she's in it regularly. Which she might not be, since she was only in the preview long enough to say about two words (it says on the imdb.com page that she plays Lt. Karen Davis, so she may be a regular).

And lastly in this overly-long comment, and on a totally unrelated note: Sarah, your shirt is awesome. I want it.

It's easy to not catch some great new shows, and poof! critically acclaimed or no, they're off the air before they found their groove. Girls in the rain on Bionic Woman

I loved this video clip with Michelle Ryan and Katee Sackhoff! I thought it was interesting that they happen to mention the "sexual tension," then innocently play it down. What a great way to suggest it without suggesting it. Thanks for letting us know Robin and glad you liked the vlog!

    Damian Lewis

Damian Lewis is British - didn't hear enough of him to rate his American accent - but DO, DO, DO, DO try and check him out in Stephen Poliakoff's "Friends And Crocodiles" (in fact, any Poliakoff stuff) and especially, the terrific character of the female protagonist (Poliakoff absolutely jolly well DOES know how to write strong women). BRILLIANT! Cheers. Alice.
