Retro Reviewing: "Kissing Jessica Stein"

This week, the reviewers take on Kissing Jessica Stein, a 2001 movie that generally gets mixed reviews from queer women. The film stars co-writers Heather Juergensen and Jennifer Westfeldt in a romantic comedy that explores the messy line between friendship and romantic love.

While the movie generally tends to divide lesbian viewers, the ratings were positive across the board. This may have something to do with the leap in quality over Personal Best, or possibly an intense interest in pamphlets. In any event, this episode features a lot of laughing, a few scene recreations, and an inconspicuous lack of the usual theme song.

Why haven't I seen you before?

Very nice work ladies! Loved the speed up recreation.

It's been a while since I've logged in, but after watching your vlog I could not resist. I'm a movie buff, so I would give KJS a 2 under my normal movie standard, but in the lesbian themed, cute and fluffy it's a 4.

Oh and please be in your 20s , because although I'm only 27 I can no longer have innocent (and not so innocent) crashes on 17-year olds.

    *geek moment*

The Kinsey Scale goes from 0-6, not from 1-7. And, while I've never seen the movie in question, the main character's described behavior sounds like a Kinsey 1: for all practical purposes straight, but exceptions may exist/they could see themselves going the other way "for the right person" or similar. My $0.02.

    I love Jessica Stein

I really enjoyed that movie! I love Helen's free spirit and Jessica's neurosis. Good chemistry right there. I like that they explore the gray areas without making a huge deal out of it.

By the way the hottest kiss of the movie is in the extras ... Helen kissing Jessica's best friend by the stair.

Agreed. Find KJS a gem - a nice blend of light-heartedness & the exploration of serious issues affecting a relationship. Has fabulous soundtrack too.

Shucks! Didn't get to see the hot kissing scene. Will watch out for it should I get hold of the dvd :)

Looking forward to Better than Chocolate.

    woo!

i saw this movie for the first time a few years ago and it i loved it...

the ending could have been better though

    boundtostone's picture

    this movie is awesome

And I like the ending actually. Despite Josh being rude to her, what he says is legitimate. He criticizes actual issues that she has. Now while, he didn't do it tactfully (mostly because he was still in love with her), it's true to his character.

Plus Jessica is by herself and okay with it for the first time after the her relationship with Helen. We don't see her get with Josh at the end. And Helen's relationship with a new woman makes sense, too. And I love that they're still supportive of one another. Especially since they had a really intense first experience together. I think, though, that Helen had been with women. I think. But never dated one.

    Great review, ladies.

CHRISTINA COX! I can't wait for Better Than Chocolate's review. It doesn't matter how corny it is.. or unbalanced. I love her. And Karyn Dwyer. They're so pretty. :sigh: nostalgia.

    The Children's Hour

If you're looking for a really old film I would suggest The Children's Hour (1961) with Audrey Hepburn and Shirley McClain. I hate old films and on the wall about tragic gay films, but I really like this one. In the film te two leads are ccused of being lesbians by one of their troublemaking students and throught that whole process emotions and opinions surface.

    Last weekend I rewatched

Last weekend I rewatched this movie in anticipation of your vlog about it. I'm such a sucker for sweet romantic comedy types of movies, and I agree that their relationship was full of that. You picked great scenes to reinact...in fact I went back and watched them a couple of times! I'm glad that there was a mention of the scene with Jessica and her mother because I really love that scene, and it gets to me every time too. I've watched the commentary by the 2 actresses/writers as well as the extra scenes too.  Overall, I would have to give this movie a 4! Thanks for the great vlog, and I'm looking forward to the next one!

    Thank you!

Thanks for reminding me about how great that movie is. It's so fun. I have it on dvd and I haven't watched it in a long time but I think I'll go put it on. Better than Chocolate is excellent too! Also cutesy and sex scenes are a plus!

I think that movie is pretty funny

I played it a couple of times for friends of mine that gf's reminded of jessica. Its a hoot to watch their reactions when they see a certain scene that reminds them of their gf. Yup, I agree with its quite a little gem of a film

    I give it 4 gay magic's!

OOo yay this is my favourite vlog and this is also one of my favourite gay films :) I like its quirkyness and how jessica's akwardness is matched with helens confidence :)

Good job guys - cant wait till next week!

    KJS is great

I loved this movie when it came out, almost to an unhealthy degree.  It's nearly solely responsible for my shift in thinking about my own sexuality.  While I'm not going to suggest that all people adhere to some kind of "Kinseyan" scale of sexual fluidity, I came to realize the quiet fear I had obsessed about my entire life - am I gay? - was actually 1) nothing to fear, and 2) not necessarily a "yes or no" outcome.  Plus, it's endlessly quotable, the two leads have great chemistry, and it's a great example of how an independent film beat Goliath at its own game (the actors/writers initially sold the script to a major studio, who planned to cast Jennifer Aniston as one of the leads, and of course sought to downplay the relationship.  They Juergensen/Westfeldt bought the rights to the script back and, through much hardship, produced the film themselves, with fantastic results, I think!).

    in the future... maybe

i really like the film "Loving Annabelle" and i noticed that you mentioned it in your 2nd post. i saw it once on tv and went out and bought it. i really think it would be cool if you could review it because i think it brings a lot to the gay community and how things are. it's a great RC and i think it would be cool to see other's takes on 'my film.'

    I LOVE JESSICA!!!

this was the first "lesbian" movie that i saw and i totally fell in love with it after seeing it for the first time. i think it's a great movie that shows the complexities of what we go through and what other's views are. i think all along Jessica was str8, but she needed to open up her eyes before she could ever be happy and she did that through Hellen. i think Hellen was never fully anything. i think she was always this "open free to love from whatever direction it comes from" person and it took Jessica for her to realize that she could be happy in a relationship, although it didn't have to be a girl. i give this film a 4 because i think it's very real. the scene in the chinese place when they're talking to the guys and Hellen is touching Jessica's leg is such a real scene that i think EVERYONE can relate to.

    Commentary

This is the first time I've watched this video blog (nothing personal, I just rarely have time!) but I watched because KJS is my favorite movie, for a lot of reasons you guys touched on as well as for many others that I could go on about forever.

But I did just want to comment and say that if you want to know more about the camera angles, use of mirrors etc, the commentary is amazing.  There's one commentary track with the actors/writers, which is fun to listen to, but there's another track that I believe is the director and the camera man, and they offer a TON of insight about the choices they made.  My favorite bit of info they give is on the scene where Helen and Jessica meet for the first time.

Anyway, thanks for the fun review!

    I love this y'all

Love the reviews because some of these movies I have not seen...Actually the only one I have seen was "But I'm A Cheerleader". I must agree that if there is sex then it DOES deserve an automatic five swishes or sashays or snaps (or whatever the hell it is) of gay movie magic.

Don't know if you take requests but I would love if you girls reviewed Show Me Love aka Fucking Amal. Good movie, no sex, chocolate milk, subtitles...I know that sounds bad, but I promise still a good movie. Five gay snaps from me.

    kissing jessica stein

gotta admit i haven't seen the movie.. but you guys make it sound so interesting and fun.. now i've got to find it!!

and that is so true (at least for me) about the very thin line between friendship and relationship.. i sometimes feel that me and my best friend are kinda like a couple but idk i just try to dismiss that though and just let it pass..

    Hurray for reinactments !

Kissing Jessica Stein is a great movie! Thanks for choosing it guys, we needed some cheering up after Personal Best.

Its a tough one though.. If But I'm a Cheerleader gets 4/5 magic swishes of gayness KJS can't get more than 3.5... so... if KJS gets 3.75 than my BIAC (unforunate acronym) vote gets uped to 4.5/5. BIAC brings elements above the whole package (writing, set/costume design, acting/directing, camera/lighting, sound)... it may just be the more sex factor ... and Clea Duvall... but KJS doesn't "bring it" like BIAC.

Question: Anyone know if Jessica Steins best friend is played by the same actor as the hilarious dog lady in Legally Blonde 2? The one who says, "Your dogs are gay!"?

    xTINAx's picture

    talking about this movie

I didn't like it at first though. Throughout the movie from the beginning till the end, it's just about Jessica wants to know if she's gay or not and then *boom back to the boys' town, I was like "WTF is this movie trying to say?". I had a chance to watch it again after a while and it was alright, I kinda like it now.
