Welcome to the first episode of Retro Reviewing, a new bi-weekly vlog by four Boston-area lesbian/bi film students (Katie, Caroline, Danielle and Rina) focused on reviewing lesbian classics and not-so-classics, as well as queer indie movies, and other under-the-radar film fare. This week, the girls take on Basic Instinct in all of its cheesy, sexy, stereotypical glory. Special attention is paid to the campy sex scenes, crazy stereotypes, awkward sexual politics, and of course, the amazing 1992 dance moves.
While the movie may be comical and borderline offensive today, it was a real eye-opener when it premiered, kicking off a a dialogue about lesbian and bisexual representation in media that continues today. For this, and for Sharon Stone’s knockout performance, ¾ of them applaud Basic Instinct. But that doesn’t stop them from having their way with the film – Catherine Tremell wouldn’t have it any other way. If you have a request for a classic film you’d like to see skewered (or praised) in a future episode, be sure to let them know in the comments! Submitted by on March 15, 2008 - 10:39am. |

I feel old
A mistake for your first episode ...
Personally I think this movie Basic Instinct was a mistake to be your first review. Here is why.... This movie is so much about the HETROSEXUAL MALE FANTASY about bi-sexual women and lesbianism. The female characters use each other to tease the men. Even though Sharron Stone's character is a strong woman the overall portrayal of women in this movie shows them as weak, murderous, manipulative, man eaters.
If I had to choose a first film to vlog about it would have been The Hunger. Don't get me wrong. I know they murder and manipulate men in this movie too. But the lesbian storyline is central to the story and not used to just tease the men.
All moives with a lesbian theme subtext don't necessarly warrent a review. And if they are reviewed it should be after a few movies with better lesbian storylines have been reviewed first.
I am not critizing your vlog, just the choise of the first movie you choose to talk about. Best of luck in the future vlogs.
Tristen
I agree
Basic Instinct to start of your retro reviewing was a strange choice.
Not only had I never thought of the film as a queer movie, but I also do not think it is all that retro.
More importantly though, I think that film is just very very bad.
I love the idea of this Vlog though....soon I will really never get to leave AE anymore...

Who doesn't blog these days?
love movies
2 Thumbs Up for this Vlog!
I really enjoyed ur vlog. Haven't seen Basic Instinct, I dunno if i ever will. But i definitely liked ur review of it! And i really liked ur rant about the unfair treatment of psychology in movies :)
I think ya'll should come up with ur own rating system though, I say u steal Sarah and Lori's bunnies LOL :)
Monster
:D
That was awesome.
Maybe you could say which films you're going to do next time so we can watch it beforehand?
I feel motivated to watch Basic Instinct now, I can't say the thought had ever crossed my mind before.
Kissing Jessica Stein might be a good one, fairly recent, but it was the first lesbian related film I ever saw.
Is this vlog a review of the good, the bad and the ugly?
I've never seen Basic Instict and I was 11 then. I probably won't either. I'm glad future les/bi filmmakers are doing a retro review of the good, the bad and the ugly les/bi female characters.
i say...
Thumps Up
Loved the blog
And I would love to see a review of Bound
Bound
Bound and The Matrix are still the Wachowski's best films, IMO. And I was always impressed that they wanted to get the lesbian sex scene in Bound correct and so got Susie Bright to choreograph it.
In terms of movies to review, I'd be interested in seeing what young women today think of Lianna given that Desert Hearts has been criticised here recently for being boring.
ok first off great vlog 2nd
Excellent idea for a vlog,
Excellent idea for a vlog, you gals did a great job reviewing Basic Instinct!
Talking about the lesbian classic, great idea... might I suggest When Night Is Falling (1995)? That was something that has left a permanent mark for me since it was the first lesbian movie I ever saw and a first lesbian movie I saw in the movie theatre back in the day. I'd love to hear you guys disect and analyse it.
I definitely agree with jro, Go Fish (1994) should also be reviewed. It's a terrible, terroble movie, but a lesbian classic nonetheless :D Also, as suggested Bound (1996) is definitely a classic and not only as a lesbian movie, it's just a fantastic movie, period.
I hate to say it, but Claire of the Moon (1992). As horrible as it is, it's still what we lesbians like to call a lesbian classic so it should be given a go.
Desert Hearts (1985), The Incredible True Adventure of Two Girls in Love (1995), Lost and Delirious (2001)...
Those are but a few that I think deserve a look and review. But whatever you guys will choose to review next, I'll definitely tune in. This is an excellent addition to the vlog lineup.
The Hunger
Well… ,I feel like a dinosaur, but what I can do? You'll all be 40 some day.
I am so with Tristen on that, If you want see one movie with bisexuals , watch The Hunger with Catherine Deneuve and Susan Sarandon. Enjoy (or not)!1st vlog
Liked your first vlog.
I was little when I watched Basic Instinct. Even then I found it disturbing to watch that angry (heterosexual) sex scenes. And found Sharon Stone more attractive then Michael Douglas (well that wasn't difficult to choose, lol).
Desert Heart
Movies (well, they aren't classic)
If these walls could talk 2 (DeGeneres/Stone), it was so adorable to see Ellen and Sharon (in Ellen's talkshow) together when Sharon said that Ellen was pretty good actually.
Lost and Delirious (2001) / Imagine me and You (2004)
hey, i really liked you
hey, i really liked you vlog =)
how about a review of Mädchen in Uniform next time?
Good Idea
I thought it was a great idea to review old lesbian classics. Got to agree with Tristan though, about the choice for your first vlog.
I kind of have a similar project like this myself, only in Portuguese, where I write a weekly review of a lesbian thematic product, be it film, series, comics, and so on.
Any of you Portugese speakers out there want to check it out here's the link:

OMG!!!!
WOW
one more thing the to girl on the far left I like your name is katie I think your SMOKEING HOT!!!!
Retro ???
Retro ??? Basic Instinct is not even 20 years old yet.
If you want retro, look at Garbo in The Painted Veil. In 1934, she had to work had to get Lesbian content in film.
I like the idea behind this vlog. However, I too disagree with your choice of first film. I think you should have started with Fried Green Tomatoes from 1991 or even Personal Best from 1982. I disagree that Basic Instinct was such a pivotal film. But, I love hearing your opinions.
I went through my collection and have a few titles from the 1990s for you four. Note, I didn't include any European films but only because I don't know if you're interested. (Ye gads, this makes me feel old.)
Bar Girls 1994
Chasing Amy 1997
Bound 1996
But I'm a Cheerleader 1999
Better than Chocolate 1999
Desert Hearts 1985
Fire 1996
Foxfire 1996
Gia 1998
Girl Interrupted 1999
Go Fish 1994
Henry & June 1990
High Art 1998
Personal Best - 1982
Showgirls - 1995
Watermelon Woman - 1996
Wild Things - 1998
Enjoy!
First off, I really liked
First off, I really liked this vlog. I haven't seen Basic Instinct yet, and I don't know if I ever will. I did, however, see Showgirls, which was made by the same Director/Writer team. Cheesy and campy doesn't even begin to describe that trainwreck, so I think I can imagine the dialogue gems that are in Basic Instinct.
Anyways, I'm looking forward to the next episode!
Thanks!
meant to comment before
Frankly you girls could review anything and I'd watch it but I'm a bit biased.
This reminded me that I saw Basic Instinct for the first time when I was in college and when the movie ended, me and my friends all agreed Sharon Stone was hot but the movie just didn't live up to the hype.
As for what you should review next.....maybe When Night Is Falling or Go Fish or maybe you should ask your version of the Croc Poc.
I absolutley loved it!
I thought it was hilarious. I love But I'm a cheerleader and I must admit I've never seen Basic Instinct. But I'm a cheerleader helped me deal with my sexuality it such a huge way, and I adore your reviewing style. :D I'll be sure to keep watching xxx
- What's hotter than Simone Lahbib downing a pint and Jorja Fox in a tank top?...................... Sorry what was the question?? -
