Reba and Kelly: I called her mine

I swore we wouldn't blog about Kelly Clarkson again for at least a week, especially now that her upcoming tour has been canceled, but this video cappuccinogirlie tipped us off to in the forum was too good to pass up. Kelly Clarkson and Reba McEntire (love Reba!) recently performed a duet of Kelly's hit single "Since You've Been Gone" for a special slated to air on CMT on June 24th.

What's so interesting about it? Kelly inexplicably changed a pivotal word in the lyrics, singing: "You were dedicated, you took the time, it wasn't long until I called her mine." The official lyrics are, "it wasn't long until I called you mine," not "her." Draw your own conclusions.

Kelly's nice and all, but I've been a fan of Reba's for years (who doesn't hear "Fancy" and want to sing along?), and became an even bigger fan when she released a song about AIDS in the mid-'90s, and then had a lesbian-themed episode on the fourth season of her WB sitcom Reba in which she is set up on a "date" with a lesbian played by Wendy Malick, and initially goes along with it but is reluctantly forced to admit, "I have no powers of gayness whatsoever." A very good episode for a sitcom aimed squarely at middle America (so of course, I wrote an article about it).

And watching Reba's hair change over the decades has been a lesson in re-invention — the woman's a master at changing with the times while pretty much staying the same. She's like the Madonna of country music, without all the sleeping around.

Besides "Fancy," my other favorite Reba songs include "Whoever's in New England," "Buying Her Roses," "One Promise Too Late" and "I Know How He Feels." So basically, a lot of her older, sappier songs.

C'mon all you closet Reba fans — what's your favorite Reba song? You know you have one.

Oh, and Kelly, did you really think you could sing "her" on national television and no one would notice? I'm just saying...

because it's the only song on my iTunes list. Never really paid attention to who was singing the songs. The only country voices I know and cannot mistake are Johnny Cash and Hank Williams (all of them)

As for Kelly singing "her" instead of "you," well that just brings a lot of women's hopes up. I think there was a lot of talk about people wishing Kelly was queer. Might just get their wish. She's so sexy!

The original singer of Please Come to Boston was Dave Loggins. It hit the Billboard #5 in 1974. In the late '90s Reba did an album of covers and that was a cover she did.  I imagine this song has been covered by a number of artists.

that everyone's hopes would be high I forgot to mention mine also, especially since I've been having a recurring dream about KC for months now. Oh and thank you Ruffian132 for clearing that up. Unless that counts as a Reba song, I guess I don't have a favorite Reba song. I feel left out now.*tear*

    In my opinion...

Her version is alot better than the original, but then I am partial to her voice.  She sings it beautifully.  Denni, I do think you can claim it as a favorite, because she makes it her own when she sings it the way that she does. ;)

Now I want to go listen to it.

I am not a real big fan of Kelly... but I do like the song "Miss Independent"! That is what happened in my life. I am for the most part "Miss Independent", I have a hard time asking for assistance... good thing/bad thing depending on how you take it.

I was dead sure I was the only queer reba fan out there. thank you, sarah! now I can finally come out :)

my favourite reba song would probably be does he love you, if JUST for the duet version with kelly clarkson *swoon*

LOL! You are not the only one!

My girlfriend is totally into Reba and everything country! I am a New Yorker... I always tell her that I would always deny that I have ever listened to THAT music just because she liked it and introduced me to it!  So, pretty much I am still closeted! LOL!

I was less effective with my girlfriend, she still mostly hates country. ok, maybe not hate, but except for a couple of songs she's still majorly annoyed by it... ah, what does she know...

    Since she can sing!

Kelly Clarkson is awesome. :) That was my song for about 7 months after my first girlfriend. I would just blast that song in the car, wherever and it would get to me dance when thing else could lift my spirits. I love Reba, but I was afraid that Reba would be singing most of that song. Luckily she wasn't not. Not that I don't love her, but she doesn't have the vocals for it. It sounded great though. I think Kelly is just getting better and better and singing. -Rachel

    Reba's a Goddess

But, I always seem to turn to her recordings when I hit a bad patch! Get the hankies out, because I can't choose between these three:

    You Lie

    For My Broken Heart

    Rumor Has It

Edit: It may be my age, of course, but is Reba actually getting sexier?

That is amazing and I love Reba.

I saw Reba at the Kentucky State Fair in 1993 I think. I was really young (9, I think), but my sister and I just loved that album It's Your Call. The only song on my iTunes now is "Fancy" but "Take It Back" and that duet involving a plot of "the other woman" were my favorites from that album.

    Interesting...very interesting

Well...I love to read between the lines.  However I was resisting the Kelly is a lesbian...maybe...line of thinking. But now there is a lyric between the lines that kinda makes you wanna go..."hmmmmmmmmmmm"

    Sexy, Sexy Reba

She is without a doubt getting sexier with age.  I have been a fan for years (I grew up in the South afterall)  My favorite songs are Does He Love You? and her version of The Night the Lights Went out in Georgia.  And, yes, I do know all the words to Fancy.
    Nichole4FSU's picture

    Reba is cool

I always liked the song "Does He Love You", the duet she sang with Linda Davis. Of course when I sing along, it's "does she love you..."

Oops, didn't see someone else posted this too. And I just watched the duet with Kelly...WOW. Better than the original.

Yep, I've had that vibe from her as well.

Kelly's great and beautiful and the same goes for Reba.  I miss her show and it's a shame that the CW cancelled it.

    Didn't Kelly Clarkson sing

Didn't Kelly Clarkson sing "Crimson and Clover' with the female pronou on her tour. So it's not a new thing for her to do. That said with C&C she was just singing the original lyrics.

KC has seemed really gay to me for ages now.

    MedGrl's picture

    That is awsome

I'm going to have to watch that. REba and Kelly Clarkson are awsome. THey did a countrified version of "Because of you" at the CMA Awards a few weeks ago. I love Reba's music. Fancy", "He Gets that from You" and "Sombody" are three realy awsome songs, but my favorite song, not just by Reba but my favorite song in general is "The Night the Lights Went Out in Georgia". THe best line is "You see little sister don't miss when she aims her gun." That has got to be the best song lyric. ROCK ON REBA! and Kelly...Is there something you want to share with the rest of the class?
    Ruffian132's picture

    As a kid...

I absolutely adored Reba McEntire.  I think it was somewhat of an unhealthy admiration.  She puts on an amazing concert though; I went a couple of times.  I think I was known to wear a t-shirt I got at one of those for days at a time, and I use to dream that she would come rescue me. ;)  Hah.  I haven't followed her music much in recent years because I grew out of country music a long time ago, but I know the words to any number of songs.

    Some of my favorites:

Whoever's in New England, Just a Little Love, The Last One to Know, Walk On (not the U2 song), the entire Rumor Has It and For My Broken Heart albums, For Herself, She Thinks His Name was John, How Was I to Know, I'll Be, What Do You Say

I guess I really only listened to her 'religiously' from the first Greatest Hits album (1987) until the release of What If It's You in 1996.  After that, I've only managed to keep up enough to know if she has anything new out.  No, I'm actually not as old as this makes me seem (especially based on my earlier Dave Loggins post about Please Come to Boston).  I'm just 24.

I did appreciate the lesbian episode of Reba.  I was pleasantly surprised.  I'm also impressed with the Kelly Clarkson/Reba duet their voices are very complimentary.

Gotta Love Reba and Kelly together

I been a huge fan of Reba's for a long time.  I have to agree with those who mentioned her version of the "The Night the Lights Went Out in Georgia".  It was the first song that popped into my mind as I read the blog.  As far as Kelly goes, I've hoped for a while that she plays for our team.
    cheerstricken's picture

    Ping!

    Their voices really rocked together!

The last time I paid attention to Kelly Clarkson's looks it was at the final episode of that first American Idol. Judging how she looks now.... it's... ah... I think it's time I should pay more attention. I have my hopes soo up.

As for Reba: I may be totally out of the aimed demographic but her show is soooo frickin funny. Yay, Reba!

    Is It Just Me....

or did Kelly look just a bit mischievous when she said "her"? Maybe it's just me.
    empais32's picture

I caught that look she gave

I caught that look she gave too, but just so I don't get my hopes up over the possibility of one of the hottest female singers ever being gay, I'm thinking maybe she just accidentally said her and she realized it too late. or maybe she actually is gay and was subconciously thinking of a girl as she was singing the song. the possibilities are endless.

    Denni's picture

    Kelly

definitely looked mischievous. It was almost like, "I dare you to catch that."

    fancy

ok. never been a kelly clarkson fan, but that video and this one i just found might change my mind. Kelly's drunk and ends up on stage at a Metal Skool concert. It sounds shady, but she looks like she's having a great time, so you don't feel guilty for watching. Also, at one point the band is giving her some alcohol and one of them throws out, "Don't give her too much or she'll f*** our groupies before we do!" (The guys must have heard the rumors.)

    Favorite Reba?

This is so weird.  I was just trying to sing the words to Fancy from memory yesterday.  I got pretty far considering how long its been since I've heard it.

I was a Reba fanatic as a teenager.  I remember the first time I saw/heard her, I was standing in line at an amusement park waiting for a roller coaster.  They had tv screens running music vids while you waited.  Rumor Has It was on and I was hooked.

Shortly, thereafter I had her poster on my wall, her biography on my nightstand, concert t-shirts (unworn) in my drawers.  I've seen her in concert more than any other major performer.  We had to write an allegory in my English class when I was 15, so I wrote it on Reba's life.  She and her family were horses.  It was after her band was killed in the plane crash.  I was consumed by Reba.  Her angsty music was perfect for me.

I remained a fan of her older albums but when I went to college I stopped following the new releases.  This post made me go pull out my 13 Reba c.d.'s and start ripping them.  I don't have any on my ipod yet.  OMG.  I cannot find Rumor Has It.  That is sooo not okay.  Eep.  I missing a few of my Reba c.d.'s.  So much for my collection.

    Fav songs:

Read My Mind, And Still, The Heart Won't Lie, Whoever's in New England, Somebody Should Leave, His Name was John, Does He Love You, Cathy's Clown, If I Had Only Known, For My Broken Heart, Rumor Has It, You Lie, etc.

Why Haven't I Heard From You is like gospel, but without the religious-ness. I love it! And can totally relate, can't everyone?

I Love Kelly Clarkson very very very much and I have been picking up a vibe for years and years from her and have been hoping my dream girl will actually been into girls lol. But yeah I cant want for Crossroads, when I was younger I never was a really big Reba fan but I knew her songs and everything I just didnt listen to country music. But I have recently really started to love Reba, and I LOVED her show and miss it :-(

I have to say that I think

I have to say that I think she is saying "her". I am legally deaf but have some hearing through the use of hearing aids and I read lips very well. I went over that clip several times and I think she is saying her. I am by no means an expert and honestly the only person who can tell us for 100% certain what was said/sung is Kelly herself. But for my 2 cents I think she is saying "her"

    I hear her too

I repeated that part so many times to be sure.. I tried hearing 'him' or 'hi mine' like person fr youtube suggested. I kept hearing the e and the r so I really thinks it's "her."

edit: so i tried singing him mine and it can sound like her mine so I don't know anymore..

but I'll go with her + the look in her eyes (+ some wishful thinking)

    SaraRebekah07's picture

    I did to....

Hahaha...I think it was ALL wishful thinking!!!

I replayed it a thousand times too...trying to hear "her", lie everyone else....but she definitely said "you" like "jew" with an "mmm" sound ending it and leading into the "mine".

I didn't hear ANY r's...and it's driving me crazy that everyone else calimed they hear "her"...because there was no "rrr" to it!!!

    another point of view

In case Kelly really said her, I wouldnt necessarily interprete that as a positiv sign of gayness. Maybe she relates it to a relationship with a girl when she was younger and it broke her heart back then and she swore to herself to never ever have a relationship with a woman again... (I know it sounds like I did a lot of thinking about it... and I did :P) just to create another point of view :P
