A preview of NBC's six new (extremely heterosexual) showsIn addition to cancelling Life earlier today (not that I'm bitter), NBC revealed the six new series it has picked up for the 2009-2010 season. First, the bad news: I've read through the descriptions and casting sides for all of the shows except Trauma, and despite the fact that they are all ensembles with more characters than you can keep track of, all the leads are straight, as far as I can tell (with the possibility that Guillermo Diaz's character on Mercy). If anyone in the industry knows otherwise, please send me a tip! The only one of the series created by a woman is Mercy (the one about female nurses, naturally). So basically, it's business as usual on primetime broadcast TV. The good news? We'll be getting Maura Tierney (Parenthood), Carly Pope (Day One), and Michelle Trachtenberg (Mercy) on the regular, and some racial diversity among the casts (not a lot, but more than you would have seen in their shows five years ago). Below is a quick rundown on each of the shows, with the official cast photos, descriptions provided by NBC, and trailers (apologies to our international viewers — I think NBC geo-blocked them to U.S. viewers only). 100 QUESTIONS
Emmy winner James Burrows (Will & Grace, Friends) directs 100 Questions, a new comedy series written and executive-produced by Christopher Moynihan (For Your Consideration) that provides hilarious answers to 100 questions about love. Charlotte Payne (Sophie Winkleman, Peep Show) is looking for love and has rejected multiple marriage proposals — but she has yet to meet Mr. Right. When she joins a popular online dating site, she gets a little help from her dating counselor Ravi (Amir Talai, The Ex List) — who requires her to take a 100-question compatibility test. The questions aren't easy for Charlotte to answer, and each one requires her to recount a poignant and humorous time in her life with friends Leslie (Elizabeth Ho, Women's Murder Club), Jill (Joy Suprano, Law & Order), Mike (Christopher Moynihan, For Your Consideration) and Wayne (David Walton Quarterlife). The test becomes a journey of self-discovery for Charlotte who begins to realize what she truly wants in a relationship. COMMUNITY
From Emmy Award-winning directors Joe and Anthony Russo (Arrested Development) comes Community, a smart comedy series about higher education — and lower expectations. The student body at Greendale Community College is made up of high-school losers, newly divorced housewives, and old people who want to keep their minds active. Within these not-so-hallowed halls, Community focuses on a band of misfits, at the center of which is a fast-talkin' lawyer whose degree has been revoked (Joel McHale, The Soup), who form a study group and end up learning a lot more about themselves than they do about their course work. In addition to McHale, the series also stars: Gillian Jacobs (The Book of Daniel); Yvette Nicole Brown (Rules of Engagement); Danny Pudi (Greek); Alison Brie (Mad Men); and comedy legend Chevy Chase (Saturday Night Live). DAY ONE (mid-season)
From executive producer/writer Jesse Alexander (Heroes, Lost, Alias) and director Alex Graves (Fringe, Journeyman), Day One tells the story of life on earth following a global catastrophe that has devastated the world's infrastructures. Beginning with the immediate aftermath of the cataclysmic event, an eclectic band of survivors — played by Adam Campbell (Date Movie), Catherine Dent (The Shield), Julie Gonzalo (Eli Stone), David Lyons (ER), Derek Mio (Greek), Carly Pope (24), Thekla Reuten (Sleeper Cell) and Addison Timlin (Cashmere Mafia) — strives to rebuild society as they unravel the mysteries of what happened and face their uncertain future. The group, all residents of one apartment building in suburban Van Nuys, Calif., embarks on a quest for survival and discovers that hope is found in small victories — and heroes are born every day. Note: this isn't really a trailer, since the show is scheduled for mid-season and still filming, it's more of a behind-the-scenes look at a day of shooting. MERCY
Mercy, a new medical drama with a unique point of view, portrays the lives of the staff at Mercy Hospital as seen through the eyes of those who know it best — its nurses. Nurse Veronica Callahan (Taylor Schilling, Dark Matter) returns to Mercy from a military tour in Iraq — and she knows more about medicine than all of the residents combined. Together with fellow nurses Sonia Jimenez (Jamie Lee Kirchner, Rescue Me) and Chloe Payne (Michelle Trachtenberg, Gossip Girl), Callahan navigates through the daily traumas and social landmines of life and love both inside the hospital and out in the real world. The cast also includes: James Tupper (Men in Trees) as Dr. Chris Sands, a new doctor at the hospital who complicates Veronica's life; Diego Klattenhoff (Supernatural) as Mike Callahan, Veronica's husband; and Guillermo Diaz (Weeds) as Nurse Angel Lopez. Joining writer/executive producers Liz Heldens (NBC's Friday Night Lights) and Gretchen Berg & Aaron Harberts (Pushing Daisies, Pepper Dennis) are executive producers Gail Berman and Lloyd Braun. Emmy Award winner Adam Bernstein (NBC's 30 Rock, Rescue Me) is the director. PARENTHOOD
From the executive producers of the box-office hit Parenthood — Ron Howard and Brian Grazer (Oscar winners for A Beautiful Mind), and writer/executive producer Jason Katims (Friday Night Lights) — this contemporary re-imagining of the blockbuster film depicts the colorful and imperfect Braverman family — four grown siblings sharing the headaches, heartaches and joy of being parents. The star-studded cast includes Peter Krause, Maura Tierney, Craig T. Nelson, Dax Shepard, Bonnie Bedelia, Monica Potter, Erika Christensen and Sarah Ramos. When Sarah Braverman (Tierney, ER), a financially strapped single mother, returns home to her parents and siblings in Berkeley, Calif. after packing up her Fresno apartment and uprooting her two inconvenienced kids, Amber (Mae Whitman, In Treatment) and Drew (Miles Heizer, ER), she is greeted by her opinionated father, Zeek (Nelson, Family Stone, Coach), and strong mother, Camille (Bedelia, Heart Like a Wheel), who are privately dealing with their own marital issues. As Sarah is reunited with her siblings — sister, Julia (Christensen, Traffic), and brothers Crosby (Shepard, Baby Mama) and Adam (Krause, Six Feet Under) — all struggling with issues of their own, it's clear that the Braverman reunion is just what they need to face the everyday challenges of modern family life. TRAUMA
Executive producer Peter Berg (NBC's Friday Night Lights) delivers Trauma, the first high-octane medical drama series to live exclusively in the field where the real action is. Like an adrenaline shot to the heart, Trauma is an intense, action-packed look at one of the most dangerous medical professions in the world: first responder paramedics. When emergencies occur, the trauma team from San Francisco General is first on the scene, traveling by land, by sea or by air to reach their victims in time. From the heights of the city's Transamerica Pyramid to the depths of the San Francisco Bay, these heroes must face the most extreme conditions to save lives — and give meaning to their own existence in the process. Starring in Trauma are Derek Luke (Notorious), Cliff Curtis (10,000 B.C), Anastasia Griffith (Damages), Aimee Garcia (George Lopez), Kevin Rankin (Friday Night Lights) and Jamey Sheridan (Law & Order: Criminal Intent). Based on the info available so far, which shows like the best/worst? Which ones do you want to watch? Which one do you think will get cancelled first? And how do you think Ron Howard justified updating Parenthood, with its sprawling look at modern-day family life, without including any gay, lesbian or bisexual characters? (We can't get away from lesbian mothers on every other TV show, but on a show that's actually about modern-day parenting, there are no LGBT parents? Or kids? Really Ron?) Also check out our previews of the new ABC series and new Fox series. Submitted by on May 4, 2009 - 5:45pm. |

You know you want to.As I said on the other
As I said on the other thread ... if you want to see Mercy or Trauma, watch early, because I doubt they'll be around for long. I love medical dramas, but unless those shows are way better than their previews suggest, than I won't be able to sit through either of them.
Parenthood I'll watch. But as I've admitted, I'd watch Maura watching grass grow.

looks an awful lot like Brothers and Sisters. I know the Parenthood movie technically came first but still do we really need two of these on television? The cast looks really great though I will give it that.
I agree
Maura Tierney! :)
I like
Carly Pope
100 Questions
Does anyone think that they have just reworked (a little) the formula for Being Erica here? Woman has life/relationship problems, goes to see a therapist, who has her relive some past event to help her better understand who she is.
It's Being Erica without the actual time travel.
The pic of Day One reminds
The pic of Day One reminds me of the gathering Gay storm video, just sayin (in this case a storm of straight shows - it's ok tho, used to it, did I sound bitter?)
Oooh
It's Big Suze from Peep Show!!
I hope these programs don't filter through to Britain, they all look pretty dreadful.
"Choose rotting away at the end of it all, pissing your last in a miserable home, nothing more than an embarrassment to the selfish, f*cked up brats you spawned to replace yourselves"
Community and Parenthood
Community and Parenthood look good. the other ones are just full of so much no that I hope they get cancelled before they even make it to the small screen. Seriously, I feel like I'm in perpetual tv deja vu, how many medical shows can hey keep thinking up? the 1st comedy looks horrible, and Day One could be interesting (plus the pope ups my interest factor by about 10 points) but will probably end up being a like bad action movie that runs on way too long.
that being said, i totally agree about the lack of glbt inclusiveness, especially in parenthood. even if there aren't gay parents, not even one gay child? seriously? i don't understand why writers keep backing away from this subject. the whole point of dramas is to create conflict between characters. ummmm, hello???
What about the ones with the
Community
This whole Breakfast-club esque idea looks interesting, and had potential because I absolutely LOVE Joel McHale but I really hope it doesn't perpetuate the stigma about Community College. I go to Community College not because I'm a housewife or a high-school drop out but because I can't afford a 4 year university. I hope they don't completely trash the idea of a Comm. College.
other than that...I guess these shows look okay. New shows are always iffy. I bet only 1 out of all of these makes it past 1 or 2 seasons.
I agree.
Well...
100 Questions - The only plus was the lead actress's accent, and the laugh track just killed it completely for me, so that's a no.
Community - Two words. Joel. McHale.'Nuff said.
Day One - Didn't seem really interesting, but I'll prob check it out for Carly Pope alone.
Mercy - The only one I'm genuinely interested in, although I could do without the whole"the lover returns but she's already married" plot they have going there.
Parenthood - I don't think I'm their intended age demographic (i.e. 18), so it didn't appeal to me at all.
Trauma - Interested in the idea of the story, but not interested in the characters.
The two I'd Likely watch.......
Showtime
Two decent looking ones
I'll probably give Community and Parenthood a shot. Community is appealing just because yeah, I totally remember that nonesense. Parenthood has a good cast, seemingly good writers, though I wonder if it is just a new version of Brothers and Sisters. Maybe there's hope that 1 or 2 of the kids are gay?
Community
Meh, pretty crap except for Community
100 Questions looks... okay. I'll be honest, I love the lead's accent, she's cute but the laugh-track ruined it for me a little bit. I'm not too sure about the storyline.
Community looks like something I'd watch but that means it's almost definitely going to get canceled so... :(
Day One I'm not too sure about.
Mercy doesn't look too great but I've always had a soft-spot for anyone on Buffy so I'll watch a few episodes and see what it's like :P
Parenthood looks too much like Brothers and Sisters (And the lesser known Australian TV series that I've never watched, Packed to the Rafters) but Ron Howard produces/writes it (?) so I'm sure he'd make it good in some way. Other than that the only reason why I'd watch it would be because of Mae Whitman, Maura Tierney and Peter Krause.
Trauma looks okay but just like every other TV series. Am I right?
Not more medical and cop dramas
Mercy and Trauma
I'm looking forward to Mercy and Trauma...which probably means someone should start writing their obituaries now.
In addition to the strong female characters on Mercy (finally, network TV is taking a lesson from cable), I can't wait to see Guillermo Diaz (an out gay man) break out of the thug/drug dealer roles that he'd been consistently given.

Day One
Another suriviving oriented show? ehh
Carly Pope... hmm
:D
This Mercy thing, has Trachtenberg going for it. But do we really need another medical drama? :/ As unique as they think showing it from the nurses POV is gonna be, its still gonna have the all the crazy medical cases (which we've probably seen before, seriously, how many more diff ways can they write them?) and relationship drama. Yaaawn!
Edit - LOL just recognised Mae Whitman in the parenthood picture. Egg! :D
This was sort of poorly written
Asking for help is sweet.
All the news shows are of course a sausage fest. No one wants to watch a show with women. They'd rather cut our heads off like Bianca and Hassan. http://themenstruator.podOmatic.com
Carly Pope...she was in Itty
Ooh new shows!
Community seems like fun. Definitely will be checking it out.
And Day One? Yes! The cast looks great, I'm in for Carly Pope and Thekla Reuten (yay, Dutch FTW!).
Btw, NOT liking that Life got canceled. Grrr. May Life rest in peace.
Community looks great.
mercy
nice. a new medical
traumadrama to look forward to.Trachtenberg is def. a plus.
And Community seems interesting enough to check out too (Mchale + Chase?)
Meh.
Community looks really interesting and the cast is awesome. I'm all for Carly Pope, but movies or TV shows about natural disasters... Just bleh.
I don't know about your takes on it, but I was once a nursery (right word? nursing?) student and there's NO WAY every nurse on that hospital is straight. Trust me, if the show is successful enough, lesbians or bissexuals will start popping out. =P
I'm not sure how much of
I'm not sure how much of Trauma I'm interested in. Of course, it'll be NOTHING like real-life and how an EMT and/or a Paramedic actually will act in the field (we do have to abide by protocols and laws and if unsure about anything, contact medical control). And then people will get the wrong idea when actually getting picked up by an ambulance/etc.
Oh, well. Still sounds like a good show, though, haha. Of course, I'm sure half of these will be canceled because I'm interested in most of tem. Mercy sounds like it'll be a competitor with Grey's Anatomy.
New shows to watch
"Day One" looks promising coz we haven't seen one of these since Jericho. You know, what do you do after a natural disaster? I've always been intrigued with the aftermath of how people will do, feel or react in terms of survival.
I'll check out "Mercy" too coz Michelle Trachtenberg is there. Oh my, Buffy's little sister has finally "growed up"... sigh. Heheh. ;o)
Wait a minute... "Trauma"? Wasn't that done before? Hello? "Saved" - starring Tom Everett Scott (Cashmere Mafia). Been there, done that and look what happened? Canceled! Okay, I'll give it a shot even if it means deja vu... heheh. ;o)
