Portia to Leno: "When I make out with Ellen, there's no pain involved"

Portia de Rossi was on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno last night, promoting Better Off Ted, telling a long story about horses and dogs, and talking about her wife Ellen DeGeneres and the difference between kissing men and women.

My favorite quote? "When Ellen and I make out, there's no pain involved." Second favorite quote? "I don't know how you ladies do it" (referring to straight women who have to kiss men).

Watch it here now:

Using the word "lifestyle" wasn't the best idea, but I know Portia and Ellen have to be careful not to look like they're recruiting. I also get the sense from the few interviews she's done lately that Portia's more introspective than Ellen, and less used to doing on-camera interviews. I suspect her stories will get shorter and snappier with more practice.

Speaking of snappy, don't forget to watch Better Off Ted tonight at 8:30pm on ABC!

    Is there..

Any way that we can have the clips for people who aren't from the US?

[I know you explained why sometimes you can't.  Genuinely curious, and not bitchy, for once.]

    I tried

But I couldn't find a non-geo-blocked clip anywhere (besides YouTube, which we can't embed in articles/blog posts). Sorry! I really did try.

would love to watch the clip but again - not available outside the US.

since you can't embed youtube clips could you at least include a link to the corresponding clip on youtube for non-US-readers? I don't need it embedded, I'm just not good at finding things ;)

    Unfortunately, we're too

Unfortunately, we're too swamped to search for the clip on youtube on top of writing and uploading the blog post, especially when we're posting something time-sensitive like this (and all of us are usually juggling at least two other things at the same time that we're trying to write and post blog posts), plus whatever clip we link to might get pulled down at any time, and then the link is no good. But you'll notice that if you wait a few minutes, one of our readers usually posts a link in the comments to watch a non-geo-blocked version somewhere else, so just scan the comments.

    she's awesome...

i got kinda agrivated with his comments, "doing her show" and him thinking doing her... along with "you really ARE a married couple" like it was all fake bullshit.

I was sooooo happy when she kept saying "my wife" that was the best.

    Lowell's picture

    yeah

    real cheesy.

i also wish that they hadn't brought up ellen so much.

    Jay Leno

I didn't take issue with the way Jay interviewed Portia, that's just how Jay is.  His comedy tends to be low brow and juvenile, so, he's pretty consistent.  When he said "you really are married," I think he was responding to the idea that Portia and Ellen were bickering, not the idea that their marriage was not legit.

    Cool

That was cool. Again I like her level of comfort when discussing her "wife" Ellen. That's not an easy thing to do for everyone. Good job Portia. Plus she even worked in the line,"Well when I make out with Ellen"!LOL Awesome.

    I watched this on tv.

And they edited out the part when she was talking about Ellen. Im happy you posted the whole interview.

    Man...

I am so in love with Portia. Ever since I've watched the entire three season's of Arrested Development a few weeks ago I've been hooked. I am for sure going to watch her new show whenever I get the chance!

    Portia is super cute. I

Portia is super cute. I love the fact that cadences of her Aussie accent come out in certain words.

What's most exciting to me about this whole thing is how normal it's being talked about. That's really important. Hopefully soon it won't be considered so salacious and it will just be a normal part of life.

    Better Off Ted is great.

    I love Portia's rambling

I love Portia's rambling stories - she's so much more natural than I thought! And although Ellen is incredibly open about her relationship and the fact that she's a lesbian, she rarely makes any references to anything even remotely sexual (like "making out" with Portia, for example). I totally understand that this is the aspect of her life that would make your average straight person the most uncomfortable, and she's slowly pushing the boundaries, but I loved that Portia seemed completely comfortable suggesting that kissing a woman was better than kissing a man, and referring to making out with Ellen.
    chilaxing's picture

    I love her rambling too.

    I love her rambling too.

She compliments Ellen really well with her calmness. Imagine two Ellens living together!! hahhaha

    BAS's picture

Nice to see her on her own

I don't watch any of the shows she's been on, so I basically only know her as "Ellen's wife" which mostly means red carpet pictures and flashing to her when talking about Ellen.  So it's nice to see that she's a great person too.  Obviously, she is, or Ellen wouldn't have married her, I guess!

I also loved how open and comfortable she is about her marriage and relationship with Ellen.  When Ellen and I make out there's no pain involved!!  Haha!  And just casually using the word wife.  She's awesome.

    Caitlin's picture

"When I make out with Ellen..."

When I heard her say that I almost fell over - correct me if I'm wrong, but is this the first time either of them has alluded to the physical side of their relationship? I mean, they're very open about their life together, but at times I think it would be easy for Ellen's audience to forget that as a married couple, they do more than just sit around and make adorable googly eyes at each other.

I think that's pretty awesome, personally. It seems like they're becoming less and less cautious about being perceived as 'too gay' with every passing day. :) Like the way Portia intentionally said 'my wife's show' instead of 'Ellen's show'. So cool.

Oh, and bonus points to Portia for that statement about kissing guys being funny and true.

    EverytimeYouCloseYourEyes's picture

    Definitely

The way she kept saying "my wife" was definitely my favorite thing about this interview. It's refreshing to hear a woman be able to say that on tv with no negative repsonse.

and the making out and i dont know how you ladies do it comments weren't too shabby either.

    Lex09's picture

    Portia

i definitely agree that this is the 1st time we are hearing about the physical side of their relationship and its so great to see her use the word 'wife'! I just wish more of us would be able to say that soon..

She was looked amazing on this show and gorgeous on ellen's show as well and loved the making out comment! It was great hearing the occasional aussie accent as im from Australia! Good to know she hasnt completely lost it :-)

I just watched Better off Ted. Its hillarous!! Its a pity its off against Idol in the US. Hopefully people will watch it and doesnt end up getting cancelled like Arrested Development. Loved that show too.. She's such a funny actress.. Love her!

    thongs

When I heard her say that I almost fell over - correct me if I'm wrong, but is this the first time either of them has alluded to the physical side of their relationship?

Well, there was that time Ellen talked about how she thought thongs were uncomfortable, but that she definitely liked them on other people, and that Portia liked to wear them. Which of course isn't a direct reference to the physical side of their relationship, but in my head it can easily go that way. :P

is soooo cute.  i just finished watching the little clip of "better off ted".  i rarely watch tv, but i just might watch this show.  thought it was funny, ridiculous, and clever.

    Uhhh... wow.

Portia looks fantastic!!  So jealous of Ellen after watching that clip.

I made a point to watch Better Off Ted tonight, and it was funny.  She was spot-on.  I think it's going to take me a while to get it through my head that it's not Lindsay Bluth I'm watching!  I kept expecting her character to say something about Temocil or forgetting her daughter...   But her new character Veronica definitely shows promise!!

    Groundbreaking, maybe?

I feel like that interview was actually pretty groundbreaking--you know, as far as late night TV goes.

Whenever there's a straight actor that plays gay/lesbian on television or in a movie, it's almost inevitable that someone will ask how it feels to kiss someone of the same sex. Leno's been guilty of this a few times (his interviews with Ryan Phillipe and Jake Gyllenhaal, particularly), but he's not alone--remember that horrid interview with Jennifer Beals and Cybill Sheperd on The View last year?

I'd always been bothered by the question itself (which subtly disparages homosexuality), but it also struck me that a gay actor would never be asked such a thing. I mean, no one asks TR Knight if it's weird for him, as an out gay man, to make-out with Sara Ramirez or Katie Heigl on Grey's, right?

So given that history, to have Portia get a question about how it is to kiss men on television is pretty significant. I loved Portia's answer...

Has Jay Leno ever been funny? God.. I hate this dude.

    i actually thought

I thought it was nice that they were talking about Ellen because then they're not shying away from the relationship. I knew who Portia was before I even knew who Ellen was because my mom would always watch Ally Mcbeal. I was 7 when it first aired and I didn't know who Ellen was until her talk show aired when I was 13
