News, Reviews & Commentary on Lesbian and Bisexual women in Entertainment and the Media

Network TV featuring more leading Asian American women next season, sky doesn't fall

Network TV used to have an unwritten rule that there could only be one Asian American woman, if that, in a leading (or even prominent recurring) role on TV at a time. Or in a few-year span.

In the '90s it was Margaret Cho on All American Girl, followed by Ming-Na on ER, and Lucy Liu on Ally McBeal. Then at the turn of the century, it was Keiko Agena on Gilmore Girls, and Kristin Kreuk on Smallville, plus a few others sprinkled in now and then.

But a few years ago, something happened — more specifically, Lost and Grey's Anatomy happened, or maybe common sense just finally kicked in — and we began to get three or four Asian American women in regular roles on network TV shows. Then last season, it was five.

And the networks discovered something odd: people of color tuned in, and the white people didn't stop watching. In fact, ratings even went up on some of the shows. (Gee, maybe this whole diversity thing isn't such a bad idea, after all!)

Now, going into the 2007-08 season, we're looking at a record seven shows with prominent leading or supporting roles on primetime network TV (eight if The CW renews Smallville).

That's almost double the number of even a few years ago. Yes, it's still a pathetically small number, and there's still no Asian American equivalent to shows like Everybody Hates Chris or the upcoming Latino family drama Cane. But at least it's trending in the right direction — and it's six more than the number of lesbians we're going to get next season!

But on to the new roles.

First, Lucy Liu makes her triumphant return to television in Cashmere Mafia (ABC), a drama about career women in New York that we blogged about yesterday. Here's her official Cashmere headshot:

Next is Lipstick Jungle (NBC), a show with a similar premise that features Lindsay Price as Victory Ford, "a free-spirited designer who longs to make her dreams come true, and maybe find Mr. Right along the way."

Here's your first look at the Lipstick cast (that's Brooke Shields and Kim Raver with Price):

Lindsay is probably best known for playing Steve's girlfriend Janet on Beverly Hills 90210 in the late '90s, but you may also remember her as bisexual Jane on NBC's ill-fated British knock-off Coupling, which only aired one or two episodes before being yanked (okay, so maybe I'm the only one that remembers that, but here's an article I wrote in 2003 about her Coupling role, in case you're curious).

Then there's Journeyman (NBC), about "a newspaper reporter [who] inexplicably begins traveling back and forth in time, changing people's lives as he does", which co-stars Moon Bloodgood (Day Break) as the ex-fiance of the time-traveler:

Last but not least, newcomer Elizabeth Ho plays a defense attorney-turned-prosecutor in Women's Murder Club (ABC), a crime drama co-starring Ho, Angie Harmon, Laura Harris and Aubrey Dollar as "an all-female group of experts a medical examiner, a newspaper reporter and a young assistant district attorney" who "solve the latest homicides while unraveling the mysteries of their own turbulent romantic lives." (Maybe they can solve the mystery of why I still find Angie Harmon attractive despite her socially conservative politics.) Here's a photo of the new cast:

And of course, Grey's Anatomy's Sandra Oh, Bones' Michaela Conlin, and Lost's Yunjin Kim are all returning with their respective series next season:

Keiko Agena, who played Lane Kim for seven seasons on Gilmore Girls, will not be returning, but her storyline was so lame by the end I wanted to put her out of her (and my) misery. The short-lived Vanished took Ming-Na with it only a few months after it debuted last fall — but if Ming-Na has proven anything over the last 20 years, it's that she has more lives than all the stray cats in Manhattan.

And now, bring on the comments: which new character is most intriguing? Which would you most like to see have a lesbian affair? And who would win in a fight, Grey's Cristina or Bones' Angela? My money's on Angela, although Cristina would put up a good fight...

    Pssst, Sarah.... "All

Pssst, Sarah.... "All American Girl" came out in like '93 or '94. Wouldn't want to you to get on Ms. Cho's bad side - she might amuse you to death:)

And I'm sooo conflicted already over the "Cashmere Mafia"/"Lipstick Jungle" cage-match smackdown that will undoubtedly go down (preferably in a mudpit). So they both score on their inclusion of Asian women in the leads (LJ gets the decision though for having Lindsay Price who I find waaay hotter than the Liu). And while I love that CM has the bisexual/lesbian storyline, LJ has Brooke Shields! Again I say, Brooke Shields!

    Life's so hard.

    Angie Harmon ...

"Maybe they can solve the mystery of why I still find Angie Harmon attractive despite her socially conservative politics."

Thank you!! I am so the same way, I find Angie Harmon ridiculously attractive, and yet her politics are SO repugnant, it is seriously conflicting. At least someone else get this.

It's almost like when I found out about Kate Mulgrew (Capt. Kathryn Janeway from ST: Voyager). Not that I actually was ever attracted to her, but I did respect her ... until the moment I found out she was 'pro-life' (ie anti-choice) ... I wanted to throw up, and all my respect for her, and even her character, went out the window when that disgusting news was revealed *sigh*

Course, not that beauty ever stopped anyone from having moronic positions.

It is because Angie Harmon reminds a person of Ali MacGraw!!

    Other Asians

now if only there were 'other Asian' (ie Austronesian, etc) characters cause you know not all Asians are chinky (even if that is a rather appealing quality) :)

    Ironic

I'd just like to point out how ironic it is that on a blog post about the invisibility of Asian American women on TV, most of the comments so far are about a white woman (Angie Harmon). C'mon people - you have lots of other places to talk about her - let's talk about Sandra Oh, or Lucy Liu, or even Elizabeth Ho! Like, who is she, and how did she get cast as a lead on a show without any previous TV experience? I googled her and couldn't find anything about her. That's not a bad thing, necessarily, just wierd.

    Wendy Armstrong

Kim Miyori played Dr. Wendy Armstrong in St. Elsewhere in the 80s. I loved that character and was pretty upset when she was no longer part of the insanity at St. Eligius hospital.

    Angie Harmon

"Maybe they can solve the mystery of why I still find Angie Harmon attractive despite her socially conservative politics."

Same here! I can't figure out why I find her H-O-T, despite her **** politics (maybe it's the genetic mix of Native American, German and Greek?)... But seeing Angie pictured as part of the Women's Murder Club cast I can't help but wonder if she's eating right. Back in the days of C-16: FBI she had a great atletic bod. Now she looks malnourished with sticks for legs...

I'm all for -more- diversity. It's what makes life interesting! (I'm an Asian myself, so I find Caucasians very "exotic" *lol*)

Oh, and I'd put my money on Angela! Don't underestimate miss Montenegro ;)

    Lindsay Price

Nice to see her get a decent role for a change! She's more than paid her dues.

I love Angela on Bones! Just wish they'd give her more screen time.

    Lindsay Price...

is the one I'd most like to see have a lesbian affair. But even better would be if someone would cast Lea Salonga as a lesbian:

    Please, networks? Pretty please?

    Lea Salonga

Yea...i agree with browne....It would be nice to see the star of the broadway show 'Ms. Saigon' as a Lesbian...

    I love Lucy Liu!

I watch her in almost anything cause I like that she's classic beautiful and smart woman. I am dissapointed that so many mixed asians are coming up. (This sounds racist but wait.)

As someone who works in the media, I feel they (executive directors/ programming) go for someone that is "mixed" or multi-racial, because they make it a point not to be too ethnic as to turn off the masses, and go for people who can transcend cross cultural audiences (thats a good thing, but its not done for the right reasons here). I think African Americans often discuss being light skinned and what that entails, but the Asian minority is small enough, and I have always thought it should be a good thing to see a lot more Asian faces, not Hapa faces for the benefit of the national audiences comfort.

Oh and I like that Korean lady on Lost, she's a pretty good actress. Hmmm, I like Kristin too...

my apologies if this offends the mixed race people of this board.
