She Got Me Pregnant: Episode 16

Dana and Helen of Mombian start their vlog this week by explaining the difference between parenthood and lesbian Turkish oil wrestling. Their main topic, however, is storytelling. They discuss the surreal and whimsical works of Caldecott-winning author David Wiesner, which force parents to become storytellers, and recommend a book featuring a boy with two moms that celebrates the art of weaving stories.

They also highlight two new lists of LGBT-themed books for children and young adults, useful for parents or anyone hoping to make her local library more inclusive. Plus: pirate hats and an idea for a new reality show.

    GLBT library books

You talked about us! I don't usually watch yours, as I have no children, but I did when I saw you mentioned the Rainbow List. I'm on that Round Table, although I wasn't involved in putting that together. No kids in my library, sadly - their books are more fun. Anyway, I know they worked really hard on it.

I was just signing up for our summer conference in Anaheim, and I saw that the session on GLBT graphic novels and comic books that the Round Table will be doing is listed under Children and Youth Collection Development. If anyone who's reading this is a librarian, you might want to look into it. Check it out on page 41 http://www.ala.org/ala/eventsandconferencesb/annual/2008a/an08-prelimprog-tracks1.pdf

Thanks for the heads up on the David Wiesner books

I watch you guys every week, and I want to thank you for doing this vlog. I don't have kids, but my sibling does, so this week's book review, especially the David Wiesner books, was really interesting.  I am going to have to check those out.  Thanks again! Just have to say, I wasn't looking at the crowd so much in that oil rasslin' scene, but thanks for pointing out what all the hipsters are wearing at the clubs.  Pirate hats. Who knew? Argh matey!

    Thanks

Egret: Yes, we love the Rainbow List. It's great there are enough books out to make such a selection. The graphic novel session sounds great. I'm not a librarian myself, however, so I won't be there (though I did most of my collegiate work-study as a library assistant, long ago). I guess I'll just have to read the ALA blog post about it.

Spotticus: Glad you're enjoying the vlog. We hope to appeal to aunts and others as well as parents and prospective parents. It's funny--before parenthood, I never would have given the pirate hats in that scene a second glance.

I love this vlog! I think

I love this vlog! I think you both give a wonderful perspective on GLBT parenting. Although I don't have any children yet, I am taking a class on children's literature and found this latest vlog to be particularly helpful. Thanks!
