News, Reviews & Commentary on Lesbian and Bisexual women in Entertainment and the Media

"She Got Me Pregnant" Video Blog: Episode 1

Attention all you lesbian and bisexual moms! In partnership with AfterEllen.com, Mombian.com's Dana Rudolph and Helen Maynard present a new weekly video blog exploring the intersection of lesbian parenting and pop culture.

In their first episode, Dana and Helen review a new TV series for children of LGBT families, Dottie's Magic Pockets, wonder where Dottie gets all her free time, and debate the merits of a parallel universe in which only gay people exist. They also compare Melissa Etheridge and Britney Spears as parents, and highlight a song that could be an anthem for LGBT families.

Watch it here now — and if you have suggestions for mom-related books/movies/TV shows/people you'd like them to discuss in future episodes, leave 'em in the comments. Just don't ask them to explain where Helena's children went on The L Word. They're saving that discussion (rant?) for January.

    The headline

made me shrug like in "So?". Until I realized some seconds later, wow, this is not yet as "normal" as I think it should/could be. Will watch it now.

    I had the same reaction...

I had the same reaction... and then I read your comment and realised how right you are. Are we so submerged in queer culture that we have forgotten the struggles faced by many in mainstream population? I feel so warm and fuzzy surrounded by my queer and queer-friendly friends that I had forgotten that discrimination and intolerance etc exists (save for the few stories around the place about nasty incidents)... not that I am likening the conception of life with intolerance ... just making a point about how absorbed *I* am in queer culture that "she got me pregnant" is nothing out of the ordinary.

I shall watch after that thought too. And Melissa *HAS* to be a better parent than Britney spears, because britney is just awful

    Question...

I enjoyed the video, and liked the points made, especially when it came to diversity, and how it is either one way or the other, in this case the other, with all gay parents.

I was wondering if you will be looking over education devices that deal with older children, especially teens?

I'm hoping to set up a site in the near future for children, mainly adolescents, of gay/lesbian parents. Your views on this would be most appreciated.

    Older children

In answer to Eliza's question: Yes, we will be looking at media and issues related to a variety of age ranges--not all in a single episode, but over the course of several vlogs.

I think the majority of resources for children of LGBT parents are for the younger kids, and more for teens is always a good idea. Are you familiar with the site Families Like Mine, by Abigail Garner, and her related sites Damn Straight and Oversampled? For those who don't know, Garner is one of the leading advocates for children of LGBT parents (being one herself), and has a number of great resources. Families Like Mine is informational, and a great basic resource; Damn Straight is her personal blog; and Oversampled is an aggregated feed of "queerspawn" posts from around the Web. (As I write, on Thursday morning, it seems like her sites are down, but I'm assuming it's just a temporary technical glitch.)

COLAGE (Children of Lesbians and Gays Everywhere) also has resources for teens.

You may also be interested in my Family Voices series at Mombian.com. These are interviews of people from LGBT families, and the last few have been with adult children of LGBT parents. (The first few were of LGBT parents--though of course the two categories are not mutually exclusive.)

    Many thanks for the quick

Many thanks for the quick reply! I'll have a look around these sites, and do some research. I'm hoping for a forum/close knit community feel to my project once it gets started.

    Thanks again!

    Good Luck!

I figured it out! . Sorry my ADD kicked in and out during this vlog. It was hard to catch my attention. I've do have very short attention span. The idea was cool. I'm sure it'll be developed even better. Good luck!

    this is great!

I love that you and afterellen have partnered up. It's great to see more voices on this site, especially since we haven't seen a lot from the lesbian mom perspective. Now I know why, your site exists!

I'm not a mom, but it's good to know that there's a resource out there on the wolrd wide web that can help me figure out how to be a lesbian mom in training, lol. I even went over and read a couple of the interviews. They're really interesting.

    Thanks for the vlog!

    Although it has nothing to

Although it has nothing to do with my situation (not for a long time anyway) it still is very amusing to watch! Great that we have another vlog here!:D Is there a maximum? In a couple of months there will be nothing written:p Not that I mind;)

    Thanks and Congratulations!

Thanks for the wonderful words about our first "Dottie's Magic Pockets" DVD! One quick note: We agree about increasing "straight" content (odd!) and had had footage of an adorable straight/traditional family, but ran into compatibility issues and opted not to delay production since our primary focus is to give kids in GLBT families a reflection of their own lives. In the upcoming DVD we will have a single dad and a single mom. So much diversity, so little time!

A big Pink Pea congrats on this VLOG space - and thanks again for starting it out with Dottie!

    Thanks to Pink Pea

Thanks, Tammy, for giving us such an exciting new show with which to begin our vlog! If we were critical, it's only because we very much want to see you succeed. (And this vlog has already taught us just how difficult it is to produce a film with limited resources and budget--if anything, it's given us a greater appreciation for your achievement.)

Looking forward to the next DVD!

"Doing the flower" into my heart!

I get all jazzed to share Dottie's living room with kids in my neighborhood. One day her cozy sparklerific "alternative" family won't be prefaced that way. It will simply be popular because its lil' heart is shining and you're bopping to the songs of Uncanny not thinking about how much history is changing in that act. Dottie's at the beginning of something and in many ways it's awesome to have so many ideas for it to improve because it means there's enough care to see it succeed and we as a community feel included in the makings of these magic pockets. I was giggling away when everyone was "doing the flower" -not only because the dance is adorable but because I know how universal that is and want to remember to do it everyday when I wake up too! I loved the Beat-Beet because it's such a memorable thing to learn and funny conversations are the best with four year olds about the quirks in language . I think there is plenty of room for educational growth as there is in any new project. But, I feel they got the heart down, the one part compassion, two parts self-love that's neccesary for all those letters and numbers and beat-beats to stick in new little learning brains. So excited about the next DVD & the groovy shows to come!

    Nice vlog Dana & Helen

Thanks for the vlog.  Not a mom, but I am an auntie (tia spot) and it is nice to know that there is an alternative to Sesame Street, Barney (I can't tell you how many times I have suffered through my nephew's favorite Barney video), and all the other children's educational videos. I like the format, and I look forward to the future vlogs.

Hi from Motilda the Mouse - Dottie's Magic Pockets:)

Hello, Dana and Helen! Thank you so much for your great feedback on the show, and for starting your first VLOG with Dottie :) I play Motilda the Mouse on the show, and I have to tell you what a wonderful experience it has been working with the Dottie's team. It's more than just a show to all of us, it's a project of love that is very dear to our hearts, and it's a fun, exciting, and wonderful adventure for us all. We're very excited about having Dottie perform live on the R Family cruise to Mexico in March, and our screenings across the country have been a huge hit with both kids and their parents!! The Dottie's team has lots of fun new adventures ahead, and we're looking forward to sharing them with you. Getting feedback is great, so parents and kids...let us know what you think! We have new episodes in the works, and it's great to hear feedback on what our parents and kids want to see.  Happy New Year!! Georgette aka Motilda the Mouse :) :)
