Maura Tierney says goodbye to "ER"

Maura Tierney's Dr. Abby Lockhart quietly left County General last night, as she and her husband Luka departed for a fresh start in Boston. Here's a clip of her farewell scene, which is characteristically low-key:

EW's PopWatch blog has a very funny run-down of her character's time on the series (read her Wikipedia entry for a more thorough overview):

Abby Lockhart was born from a one-ep guest spot as Carol Hathaway's OB nurse way back in 1999. She then entered med school, helped John Carter through his weird post-stabbing-of-Lucy addiction to pills, went back to nursing after her deadbeat ex stole her money, dealt with her bipolar brother and way more bipolar mom (Sally Field!), eventually got her medical degree, struggled with alcoholism, dated Luka Kovac, dated Carter, dated this sort of Paul Rudd-lookin' med student named Jake, fell in love with Luka, got pregnant, had his baby, nearly died in childbirth, struggled with alcoholism again, slept with Stanley Tucci, got back together with Luka for the most part, and recently survived a mob-related ambulance bombing. And that's leaving out the majority of the weekly attacks, storms, helicopter crashes, hijackings, kidnappings, run-ins with Forest Whitaker, and assorted other catastrophes she's endured over the past nine years. There really isn't room on the internets for all of it.

Abby was pretty well-liked by the other characters over the years, and by the audience. She was also one of prickly Dr. Kerry Weaver's only friends at County General, proving that Abby really could get along with just about everyone, and usually did. (Abby's closest friend the last few seasons was Dr. Neela Rasgostra — another reason I liked Abby.)

Here's a short pictorial of Dr. Abby Lockhart's different looks through the years.

What's your favorite Abby look? Personally I prefer this one, from our 2007 Hot 100 (OK, so technically that's cheating since it's a photo of Tierney out of character, but it gives me an excuse to post the photo again!):

If you're still watching ER (and I'll admit I gave up awhile back), what's your favorite Abby Lockhart moment?

    Ah, Abby...

My fave moments are usually the ones where she has a pithy, cutting comment that is also totally hilarious.  Her moments with Kerry were always good (they should have hooked up a few times).  My favorite moment in her last episode was when she told Angela Basset she wasnt her bitch...yes, indeed.  How many times do I want to say that at work?  I just love the character of Abby and Maura Tierney is gorgeous.  The ER just will not be the same (so glad they showed Haleh and Chuny giving their goodbyes..made it more real).  Thanks, Sarah, for posting this blog.

I've been watching just so I didn't miss her exit. Though I must say I'm surprised that nobody on this site mentioned the opening sequence of this season's first episode which featured a very buff Angela Bassett working out. Anybody else see that leg extension when she was kicking the crap out of that heavy bag? *thud*

Ok, back to Abby. I really loved this character, even when she was messing up as she was one of the few female characters in filmed entertainment who actually went on to complete their education and get careers comenserate with their intelligence.

Gotta say, I loved the tango she did last night with Frank, it was sweet.

    Bye Abby!

Oh Abby. Well I guess I

    Oh Abby.

Well I guess I don't watch ER any more then.

I was happy pretty much whenever she was onscrean but Maura is actually an amazing actress when she gets the chance to show it off; she can do no wrong. She should never have lightened her hair though, I was very against that.

    Favorite Moment

Before this episode I'd say that my favorite Abby moment was when she was with Kerry after Sandy died. There wasn't really much dialogue, just a shoulder to cry on.

But, the dance with Frank. (Woulda been better with Randi... :)) That yanked on the heart strings, and not in a fake way like some of the storylines in the last few seasons have tried to do.

Now, if the person/people who wrote this episode could perhaps, write the rest of the 15th season, instead of those who wrote the first two of the season, then I'd be a happy ER watcher...

I have not watched the last

I have not watched the last few series, and I didn't watch the first ones either, but Abby was probably always one of my favourite characters in the seasons that I did see.

Baring in mind that I haven't watched ER for about 4 years, the only ep that really sticks out for me was when she was kidnapped by some guys. One had been shot, and she basically had to try and save his life in the back of a car with a gun pointed at her head. Probably not one of her happiest memories, but it was suberb acting on Maura's part, and I will always remember it.

Maura was awesome as Abby. Her character was amazing. She went through so many changes, and came out on top.I cried throughout this episode. Maura was just spectacular. I loved it when Abby danced with Frank, that was so sweet. I think was one of Maura's best episodes. I will miss her dearly.I hope she will come back for the series finale. ER is a great show. I sorry to see it end.

Maura job def well done. I can't wait to see what you do next. Many applause to you.

    dear abby

love maura tierney... woman could recite a shopping list and i'd be captivated. i watched abby for a few years now and of all relationships she had over the years the ones that stuck out for me were her relationship with her mum (sally field) which was great but also and with neela.... i thought they had so much chemistry together ....but maybe that's the big dyke in me?

    Hmm...

My favourite part is that time when she moved into Kim & Kerry's basement apartment and then fell in love with them... oh wait, that was a fanfic, right? Dang. I gave up on this show somewhere around when they killed off Sandy. I still catch the occasional episode, though, the doctors are so very pretty...

    My favorite part was

My favorite part was definitely the Abby/Neela sex scene.

Oh, I know it wasn't on camera but we all know it happened.  I mean, did you see their goodbye.  The eyeshagging, the window-aborted hand sex through the surgical observation room glass, the lost looks in their eyes, the "it hurts too much to say goodbye, so we just won't say it" moments.  They were totally in love, hence, they totally had sex.  Abby couldn't contain herself any longer and just had to leave Neela's presence or risk jumping her on the first rolling bed they happened upon.

What?  You think I'm crazy?  Oh, yeah?!  Well, prove me wrong.  Can't be done.  Neeby Forever!

Abby has always, to me, been one of the better written characters, but what I loved most is how she dealt with her mom/brother, that was just so well acted and scripted :) But I also loved that one episode where she's out with Carter and they end up (trying to?) slice someone's tires, she's such a real person in those moments, instead of being clearly a tv-character :)

Now, if only NBC would be kind and allow me to watch that vid....

    Oh Abby...

I've always loved Abby, and am honestly somewhat confused about why they think that it's a good idea to get rid of her so early in the final season.  The character is amazing (and so real, as others have said).  I hope that they'll somehow work it out where she can 'pop in' sometime later in the season.

It's hard for me to pick a favourite Abby scene, but it might be pretty much all of the episode where she has Joe.  All the drama and complications that are involved...I dunno...it just really tugged at my heartstrings.  I could just feel the love coming from the character :)

    Abby!

Abby's so great! She definitely was one of my first crushes, back when I was 13 (together with Elizabeth Mitchell, haha).

My favorite scenes were those with Sally Field. I particularly like the episode (I don't know which season it was) in which she drives all the way to Tulsa (with Carter) to get her mother, who has locked herself in some motelroom. I just thought that was a great storyline, and great acting as well.

i managed to make it almost to the end without becoming a big sobbing mess o' butch.  then the abbey/frank dance, and it was faucet time.

    so sad.

    Ah Abby....

Alas, I will more than likely not be watching ER anymore.  The sole reason I was still watching it was the absolute brillance of Maura.  I had stopped watching when Lucy Knight was on the show, but went back, with bouncing joy, when Maura graced the screen.  I first saw her in Oxygen (with Adrien Brody) and was in love with how great an actress she was, after that, I was a Maura follower.  Good-bye Abby/Maura you live on in TNT returns for me every day.  My fave epi was NicU -- absolute sheer brillance on the part of Maura, I only wanted her to go gay, for ONE episode!
    avalaurent's picture

I hope she has something else lined up....

I too fell off the ER wagon when she got married and pregnant, I liked when there was the possibility that she might get with someone else......Neela, not Stanley Tucci, although I did watch that episode because cheating appeals to me.

Anyway, I loved her on News Radio-another show I initially watched for her and Phil Hartman.  And I've watched pretty much anything she is starring in, including that weird Adrien Brody flick and Welcome to Mooseport.  I am a dedicated fan and I can't wait to see what she does next.

Until then, ER reruns, my faves: The love triangle with Luka and Carter-Christmas episode anyone???

I hope to see her soon on another show

My favourite moment is for a while ago. It was this scene with Kerry just after Sandy died. It was a very sat moment. And there hardly any talk in this scene. It was just a very sad but good scene. I'll miss her on ER.
