Gay Girls Who Game: Episode 2

In the second episode of their vlog about video games, LesbianGamers.com founders Tracy and Angela talk about what they've been playing this week, which includes Uncharted: Drake's Fortune, Dancing Stage Universe and Call of Duty 4.

They also reveal some embarrassing facts about World of Warcraft and Gods of War 2, and Tracy looks particularly desperate when she puts her Xbox Live Gamertag out there for all to see. Thrown into the mix are some viewer feedback, a MySims competition and yet more lesbian gaming related news.

    Almost naughty vlog title

Apologies for implied crudeness, but it's rather hard not to mis-read the title. I shall watch this with my breakfast tommorrow. Such a lovely variety of vlogs and blogs after the Christmas break. Afterellen has to be my first stop shop for procrastination lately.

    PC Games

It's ok, I am not much of a PC gamer either- I have you beat- I think the last PC game I played was the original Oregon Trail when I was 10... on the floppy disk....with a green screen background.  I have to say  I was the best hunter ever in that game.  Of course, I always lost some damn ox fording the river or I lost someone from dysentary...... Ahhhh, memories.

Great vlog to follow up the first.

I'm updating the PS2 I have. Which console would you reccomend out of the latest turnout? I've heard many different reviews when it comes to the frontrunners.

There's nothing wrong with Britney Spears! Well, apart from the obvious.

    Updating from your PS2

    Hey hey,

Thanks for the comment about the Glaswegian accent.

Personally I would recommend the Xbox 360. I would say I play that most and in house we both on the whole play that most. Let's just say that when it comes to buying a game, if it's available on Xbox 360, PS3 and Wii, we tend to buy it for Xbox 360. There's a few reasons for this, mainly the online play for Xbox is excellent and there's a thriving community out there. Also, once you get into the Xbox style of controllers etc it's difficult to go back. There's a huge catalogue of games too.

If you're really all about the graphics then the PS3 is obviously better.. slightly... but to be honest, I don't notice it all that often as I personally feel there's not as much variety on the PS3 yet. However... in saying that, if you're an avid PS2 gamer, getting the PS3 is a good move because you can play a lot of your PS2 games on that. If you're keeping your PS2 though, go for the Xbox 360.

As for Britney... poor thing. LOL.

Hey thanks everyone else for the lovely comments again so far!! Keep them coming!

You guys have no idea how

You guys have no idea how happy I was when the first vlog was posted! And this one's even better...It's refreshing to hear about games from a strictly female perspective after 15ish years of hearing mostly men talk about it.

PC gaming is too expensive for me, so I generally avoid it. Though I'm definitely getting Starcraft 2 when it comes out! I have a major soft spot for RTS games.

Oh, and your collection of games in the background makes me jealous :(

    Girl Gamers Eh?

I just bought my 360 about a month ago and have had my Wii for a year. Love it all > Gears is the is. I am just playing F.E.A.R. I hate to admit but it scares me too much. This is such a great thing to see on here. Girls do game. I belonged to a forum where basically all the boys said girl gamers suck. Meh, I am no hardcore gamer, but I love to play. They were talking about respect for the game...blah blah. I stated and stand by my statement I only have respect for human beings and animals.

I TOTALLY got a shout out!

    Woohoo!!!

    I blushed. I won't lie.

Wii Week next week?! I can't wait!

World of Warcraft Virginity taker?? RIGHT HERE! Go to the Bronzebeard server ... we have a lot of Aussies and Kiwi's in my guild. We'll treat you right!

And let me say, that because of you, I received a PSP for Christmas ... after talking incessantly about your first vlog to my partner, I went to Best Buy (Electronics store) and started playing the PSP Demo (which was the ATV vs. Motocross game, btw). So now I have my very own PSP, the Simpson's game, and Atari Arcade. Awesome.

Dance Dance Revolution - SO WEIRD. My cousin is really good at it, I just watch him in horror.

You grrrls are just so cool.

My Sims Character (even though I'm an ineligible US gamer): female, with cut off canvas trousers, calf high leather boots, Red bucchaneer coat, with a black bandana.

Accessories: Pirate Cutlass sword, revolver (tucked in belt), PS2 wireless gaming controller, Wii Nunchucks, monkey on shoulder.

    House: Pirate ship.

    Vampire Masquerade: Bloodlines

Aye the female vamp you get to sleep with is Jeanette but there is also some flirtation with another female vamp, Vivi. Plus your ghoul Heather is totally devoted to you but it probably doesn't count since its practically thralldom (is that a word?)

Great episode! I'm a newcomer to consoles (got my Xbox 360 in November) and its good to know which titles to get and which to pass.

    YAYYYYYYY!

    OMG!

Tracy, your shelf looks just like mine with all that White Wolf goodness <3 As a fan of Vampire (and Changeling and Mage and Werewolf...), I give you hugs!

    *bonecrushinghugs*

Ahem, and thanks for the Bloodlines reference. Yes, it's Jeanette you can hook up with and it can be a hell more interesting if you're playing with a Malkavian female character ;D

Thanks for the tip about BSG RPG, I'll hunt for the corebook. Even if I'll not find anyone here to play with (that sounded geek and looser-ish sad >_>) they always have cool infos and stuff in those things. Like Star Wars RPG pen & paper RPG game.

I'll wait till Assassin's Creed is released for PC, so I guess it'll turn up into my Must Have 2008 Game List. ^^

Just a curiosity... The blond girl on Dancing Stage Universe looks a hell lot like one of the characters on DDR for PS1. How do I know that? Well... I'm a pervy gamers maybe /o\ She was the hottest 3D chick on DDR 4 and 5 (or was it 3 and 5? anyways... she was there, I know it!). It's such a shame to see her going downhill in a crappy dance game.

Last but not least... thanks for the vlog girls ^^ This is one of my favorite vlogs here.

Great Vlog and Hurray for Uncharted!!!!

Great vlog again! Very entertaining, though I was surprised to hear you guys don't do much PC gaming. PC gaming is pretty significant to me for any FPS games. Everything else I play on console including, UNCHARTED!! I loved Uncharted and was so happy to hear you review it! I loved the graphics and I thought it was reminiscent of Indiana Jones.

I wanted to ask, do you guys play much of the Horror/Survival genre? I know you mentioned Bioshock on 360, which is great, but I was thinking more along the lines of Silent Hill and the Resident Evil series. The latest Resident Evil I played was RE: 4 (Gamecube), and Silent Hill Origins for PSP was also really impressive in terms of the feel and graphics of the game. Just wondering if you were interested in those games...

And w00t! Assassin's Creed! Played that over the holidays and was blown away! It was sooo good, though I think it ended too abruptly.

    Horror Genre

    Heyyy,

Yup I am a HUGE horror gaming fan. We will have to do a special horror themed vlog near Halloween lol. We actually did a horror podcast last year if you want to listen to it. You can download it and others on iTunes. Just go to the iTunes store and type into the search girl gamers. We're second on the list (actually we're first and second of most popular, but the first link is dead now and iTunes won't remove it! arrggh). Anyway, yeah, you'll be able to listen to our horror podcast there if you feel like it and some others. We stopped doing them because we were getting lesbian gamers up and running and now we do the vlogs so the poddies are just so old fashioned hahahaha.

You can go directly to it on our other site ThumbBandits, by clicking HERE

    Peace!

    Tracy

P.S. I just bought the new Resident Evil on the wii so will talk about it in the next vlog x

    horror games rock.

I'm a total video game junkie, but I'm a...like a...umm...like a super junkie when it comes to survival horror games. Silent Hill and Resident Evil especially- I'm anxiously await Part 5 in each series.

I posted a wee list of some of my favorites quite a while ago on my blog...maybe you'll find a title or two you haven't played yet. I'm always looking for recommendations!

One of the coolest horror games I've played recently is Haunting Ground on PS2. Very different style of gameplay, and very scary.

But how I hate not having a Playstation at the moment to play it properly on :(

    lexx23's picture

    Fatal Frame series and Siren

I can't believe I forgot about the Fatal Frame series! How cool were those games?! My fav. so far though is Fatal Frame 2, the cutscenes in that one were totally twisted! I'll have to check out Haunting Ground, I've never heard of it before. Siren and Doom 3 were also really wicked, along with (since we're including PC games) F.E.A.R, though I remember the nostalgic days of Doom on Super N.E.S. and how THAT used to be freaky!

Have you ever tried Sanitarium? It's a bit of a different experience, psychological horror, not quite as action packed as Silent Hill, but pretty freaky. Graphics I guess by today's standards are pretty crappy though, but it's worth playing though.

    finalgirl's picture

    Sanitarium...

I'm pretty sure I played that one a long time ago...you wake up in a decaying sanitarium with no memories or something? I remember liking it alot, but I never got to finish it- my roommate who owned it moved.

Yeah, I really dug Haunting Ground. It's survival horror, but the gameplay is unique- you don't get any weapons and virtually your only option is to hide from the bad guys. It relly gets your heart racing to hide underneath a couch and watch as they look for you...

Fatal Frame rocks! I haven't played the third one yet. I can't believe they haven't tried to turn the story into a movie yet.

I'd also recommend Eternal Darkness on GC...that game is a serious mind****!

    lexx23's picture

hmmm building a horror game list....

Yep, that's Sanitarium alright. It's pretty easy to find the torrents online and burn them to a disk if you wanted to finish it, although by today's standards the graphics are quite pathetic. That kind of takes away from the 'scare' factor now that I've been desensitized by games like Doom 3 and F.E.A.R.

Eternal Darkness I heard about but it's such a rare find! I've been searching for it for ages! Actually the one I was looking at was called Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem...that the one? Or is that a sequal to the first one? Let me know!

And I know, Fatal Frame, especially the second one, could be such a kick-ass movie! But no, instead, Hollywood chooses to make stupid remakes of old films and even remakes of remakes! They really need to look to the gaming industry before they pitch ideas. And of course, do the videogame to movie transfer justice, unlike with Doom and somewhat with Silent Hill. I didn't see why the Silent Hill movie couldn't just follow the first SH installment? It was such a good story and certainly the effects in the movie were pretty wicked. If they had to have the Pyramid head guy then just write him in and don't wait for SH2! I thought the movie effects and the atmosphere was well done (plus adding in the official game soundtracks) but the story?!

meh. I think I'll go drown my sorrows in Assassin's Creed.

    AidenUnleashed's picture

    Call of Duty 4..

..actually made me go out and get an Xbox Live supscription about a year after actually getting a 360. I'm sucking so bad at it,and everyone online in the game is convinced I'm a guy..but apart from that, most fun I've had in a while :D Been spending so much time on the console now I've got XBL, before I'd just pick it up eveery once in a while and play until I got stuck on a bit, then not pick it up for another few weeks.

Drakes Fortune looks amazing, 'm hoping it gets released on the 360 sometime. Either that or I'mma be spending a lot more time with the friends who have a PS3, cos I can't quite justify buying one just for it. Yet.

Great Vlog btw, nice to see women talking about games instead of guys for once. Lookin forward to the next week's episode :)

PC Gaming and Other Random Things

I don't have a lot of PC games I play anymore, due to the fact that I am still using my grandmother's rejected piece-o-crap comp. Mostly it's the following:

    Backyard Baseball/Football/Soccer (Humongous Entertainment)
    Neverwinter Nights Diamond Edition (Bioware)
    The Movies (Lionhead)
    SimAnt/SimFarm (Maxis)
    The Sims 1 & 2 (Maxis)
Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic (Bioware)
The Typing of the Dead (Sega)

It's gonna kill me when Spore comes out (shut up) and I'm totally unable to play it.

Still think y'all should grab a copy of Misadventures of Tron Bonne. Okay, she wears a lot of pink. Still, Tron is one of not-so-many female main characters in video games, and she has a subtexty relationship with a rookie cop named Denise Marmalade that I recognized even when I was first playing the game as an iddle biddle kid.

Things that depress/infuriate me as a grrl gamer:

    20. Capturing Carmen Sandiego. She is too cool to be stuck behind bars!
    19. Pink Xbox 360 and matching controller
    18. Only woman in "Gears of War" is talking through a robot or some crap.
    17. Seth Green isn't a (gay) woman... has nothing to do with gaming except that Seth Green is a voice actor for Mass Effect.
    16. Super Princess Peach sucked. I mean, GAWD!
    15. I can only play Dead Rising as a really gross hairy guy.
    14. No Nintendcats
    13. No Misadventures of Tron Bonne 2
    12. My brother owns the 360 but not Assasin's Creed... and I can only play Mass Effect on his terms.
    11. Heavenly Sword is PS3 only
    10. What happened to Sadness?!
    9. Bloodrayne (Both the movie and the game!)
    8. Bloodrayne 2 (Both the movie and the game!)
    7. Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Chaos Bleeds
    6. Dark Angel video game
    5. "Girls of Gaming" magazine has nothing to do with girl gamers/female programmers/any real life women whatsoever.
    4. Ubisoft "Imagine" game series-LG readers already know why.
    3. DOA games, esp. Beach Volleyball... according to my brother, it has an option where you can set "jiggle speed"
    2. Psuedolesbian TV spots that (A) look like bad porn and (B) have nothing to do with the game being sold
    1. Even in video games, no gay marriages, just "civil unions".

    renewed interest in gaming

I have to say that this was very entertaining and informative. I am quite the luddite when it comes to gaming.  I still have my Sega, but I also have PS2 (Ooooh!!!, Sassy!  Not.)   ; )

So much to learn! As for game genres, will you address driving/racing games? As much as I love FPS games, I really love the racing games (think WRC & Le Mans).  Thanks for taking the time to do these vlogs.

The only game in the world is WoW

Whoopee, yay for the shout-out-ness. Lucky for you this is a cyclical thing as you mentioning me will totally get me to agree with everything you say- which I will also do now, because you are in fact right about everything. I nparticular this week Fifa 08! love love love it! Forced my mate who has no interest in sports games whatsoever to by it for just so I could play it- and woot! for the Glasgow Rangers, also my team of choice. My sis lives in Kilmarnock, and her guest bedroom is my planned launching pad for my new Glaswegian lifestyle-hopefully with lovely Glasgow girl included:)

Now as for World of warcraft- it is literally the only game in my gaming world, mainly because I can't afford a system+TV, and also because IT ROCKS!! I will most definitely be your afterellen member lesbian gamer guide into the fabulous world of Azeroth(and the Outlands etc. etc.) If you want to get started, there are some great glbt friendly guilds on the proudmoore server- search for the stonewall champions for more info.

Also, a hint for keeping WoW from swallowing your soul- play it on a real crap Dell laptop that will only alllow you to play for fifteen minutes at a time before you lag so much you can barely move- it works like a charm.

Gosh Im a loser- ah well.

    Simple games I like:

Your vlog rocked and made me feel less alone in my geeky lesbianism.

    Small/simple games I like:

Geometry Wars. That game is ridiculously addictive... and it makes my friends laugh when I get frustrated because the blue diamonds won't die dammit!

Typing of The Dead... simply because of the hillarity factor. Plus, I conned my teachers into letting me play it at school because it's 'educational'.

    Jade empire versus Fable

Great Vlog. I love gaming though I've been a bit lax lately. I had to put my xbox console into storage because I knew that if I had easy access I would never finish my thesis.

Question for gamers, I was just wondering whether you thought Jade Empire or Fable is the better RPG? I prefer Fable but that's probably because I prefer the look of Fable and the addictive storyline. I don't like the fact that you can only be a guy and there doesn't seem to be as many options at each stage as in Jade Empire. But still, If I had an xbox 360 (which I don't cause I'm broke) I'd be looking forward to the release of Fable 2 more than Jade Empire 2.

     Peace out xxx

    lesbionic_woman's picture

    I didn't really like Jade

I didn't really like Jade Empire much, mostly because it was a really short game, there wasn't enough character customization for my taste, and I was expecting it to play like KotOR. I don't understand why there's a world map if you can only go to a few towns! Don't get me wrong, I still own it, but I've only played it a couple of times.

Fable, on the other hand, was pretty awesome, except that I could only play as a guy, and couldn't even select what he was to look like except for hair and clothing. I expect a better level of customization when I am playing an RPG.

Overall, I'd say I liked Fable slightly more, probably because I had higher standards for a Bioware game.

    Fable 2

I haven't played Jade Empire, so I can't really comment on your comparision. However, I wanted to point out that in Fable 2 (which is supposed to be coming out this year) there will be an option to play as a girl (and same-sex marriages are possible too, if i remember correctly) I wonder if our "Gay Girls Who Game" know anything more about it? When this year it's supposed to come out? As you can tell, I'm totally geeked for it and would love if they talked about it in an upcoming vlog.

And speaking of upcoming games, is there anything else cool on the gaming horizon? I know I recently read something about a Ghostbusters game...

    Dylanxtra_x's picture

    Very nice vlog :) ...

    Very nice vlog :) ...

It's nice to hear about gaming and games from people I can identify with :p

On your recomendation I'm going to check out Vampire Masquerade. Having read very little about it before I was under the impression it maybe wasn't as good as I would hope, but given your enthusiasm for it...I'm going to have to check it out :D

Also, just a quick suggestion...leave WoW on the shelf and get yourself a copy of Guild Wars (I'd go for the Nightfall version at least first). No ridiculous monthly fee, great gaming and graphics, everything you'd expect from an MMO but without the ennnndless leveling of WoW (that you'll spend half your life grinding away at). WoW is far too time consuming, and playing in a guild can be stressful - raiding being the main culprit, the pressure to have 'leet' gear the second - whereas GW is very relaxed and I only ever have fun with my guild, whether it be in PvE or PvP. It's more of a skill game than a gear and grind game (though I have no doubt a few WoW gamers will disagree :p).

I've played both, and enjoy my time on GW much more then I did on WoW. I say did...cos those fees just don't really allow you to be a casual gamer in WoW if you're not that well off...lol

Anyways, great vlog, thanks for giving me even more to keep me hooked on this site :p

I own fifa 06 and played fifa 07, both for the nds and both of which I really enjoyed but I just can't get to grips with fifa 08. I find the controls a lot more difficult this time round and I don't think the graphics are as good as the 07 version either. The addition of the Eircom league is a plus though as is the ability to release and transfer players but other than that I don't really rate it.

Can anyone tell me if the PS2 or Wii version are any good?

    Hey Piaf

I bought FIFA 08 for almost every console that I own. For the PS2 I can recommend it. Great options like discover new players, buy and sell them, manage your own team (simulate matches or play it yourself) schedule training ect, new leagues added and online playing.

I did not buy it for the Wii or the nds so there I can not help you.

Hey zonker I know runescape, it reminded me a bit of ultima online (one of the very early MMORPGS!). Though i got distracted before i really got into it.. Guild wars came out! to whomever mentioned guild wars earlier - it is a pretty damn good game - the no fee to play is great!– me personally I found it a bit easy, and population on the servers was a bit lacklustre, but all in all with friends its lots of fun. I can’t wait for Age of conan – Its gonna be a great MMORPG (i *think* it might be coming out on xbox 360 as well as pc?) – fun fun fun!

Aeris! Starcraft 2 is going to be sick! i am a huge fan of strategy.. the original starcraft was the bomb! i might have had a slight crush on Kerrigan... :P

Caption reads : Agreeing with Tracy will always get you mentioned. LOL.

And, give me a shout out in your vlog will always get you a comment from me, not that I have anything interesting to say tonight. ;-)

I have yet played the games you mentioned this time, except I played the Sim2 a lot couple years ago. I don’t know if there are many differences.

Excitedly waiting for next week’s Wii vlog. Keep up the good work, gals, you two are funny !!

    Gamer age...

    Hmm

35 years old? Check! (At least until this Saturday!)

Gamer? Check! (Been gaming since the mid 80s!)

My mother plays, which just goes to show you can never be too old for gaming! I got her hooked on World of Warcraft, which I still have an active account for but don't play - been playing Pirates of the Burning Sea this last month - open beta and now prelaunch... You can even play a lesbian pirate! How cool is that?!

We're also about to welcome a Wii into our house - a Christmas gift to my other half, which I couldn't get in time for Christmas... Soo... if I were a MySims character, I'd be an arty/geeky type (I'm a writer and a gamer), pudgy (if that's possible), and wearing glasses... I should win because... well because it's my birthday on the 12th! :P (j/k)

Oh... yeah, and I just wanted to say about Bioware. Bioware has an all right track record. I remember on the Neverwinter Nights forums kind of talking with David Gaider about same sex relationships in NWN (and in the Baldur's Gate series before it) ... He basically didn't recommend fixing the games to allow same sex romances (which essentially involves making the romance dialogues not dependant on your character's sex), because that wouldn't be handling things right... His point was basically that a same sex relationship would be different (subtly, I think, but enough), and wouldn't develop the same way as the "standard" relationships. Which I think is a fair point. Then along comes Knights of the Old Republic and the character Juhani... And since then, a variety (three total to date, I think?) of Bioware titles have included same sex relationships - KotOR 1, Jade Empire, and Mass Effect.... Obsidian (responsible for KotOR2 and NWN2) have not been able to live up to it, though. I hope we see more RP titles that have more inclusive romances. (Though it would be nice to see a true lesbian character, not just bisexuals - Juhani's romance was only half finished, Silk Fox was bisexual, and aparently the romance from Mass Effect (which I'm hoping will come out for PC some time in the future) is from a monosexual race... Oh yeah, and having more male/male romances for our gay brothers wouldn't hurt either!!)

Lastly, your White Wolf collection is pretty darned good! Definitely eclipeses mine, but then again I am more of a Dungeons and Dragons fan and have the collection to prove it. ;)

    Incidentally

KOTOR 1 is one of my favorite games. And I was hoping they would have allowed for the same-sex relationship to develop between the main character and Bastila but they pushed that union more towards Carth and the main character...*sigh* why am I such a geek. lol But you're right, if they fleshed out the same-sex relationships more, it would be much more appreciated. Good call though, about Bioware being one of the more progressive game creators.

    KotOR was GREAT!

    Heya,

KotOR was a fantastic game, IMHO. I even started writing a fan ficiton based on it (was probably going to end up novel length, but first I got writers block and then I decided that I didn't want to spend so much time writing a fan work when I could be writing other stuff that could potentially be published). And I wasn't the only one. KotOR resulted in a huge amount of fan writing, but that's nothing new for Bioware games (just look at the amount of Baldur's Gate fan fiction floating around the 'net!). In my story, Revan (female) ends up with Bastila... only I hadn't got that far when I stopped writing (Revan hadn't even met Bastila by the time I stopped!)... Maybe I'll have to unearth it and do some more work on the story... (I think I said that the other day about my NWN fan fiction. *sigh*)

I remember exactly what the circumstances where, but I think the romance with Juhani was rushed. I think Bioware was running out of time to get the game done, and the Juhani-female!Revan storyline suffered from that.

Anyway, here's hoping Bioware kees up the good work! :)

    Awesome vlog

     hee hee

Call of Duty 4 is my new best friend. Sadly, I've abandoned most of my other games in favor of it. The multiplayer's only downfall is that you cannot do a co-op campaign over XBL, and that is why no matter what, Halo 3 will forever be my love.

I love a PC game myself though...it is expensive. I cried when I bought Age of Empires 3 the day it came out lol

Great vlog though, I enjoy it immensely.

Okay, I have the best idea ever...

"A Shot of Love with Silk Fox". Oh c'mon, that's funny (okay, maybe only if you're a total geek).

    If you liked Battlestar Galactica...

You may want to consider trying the Serenity Role Playing Game. Based on the short-lived television show Firefly, The rule systems are the same (both games use the Cortex system and are published by Margaret Weis Productions, Ltd)

I love the vlog, and appreciate the rounded coverage. Don't fret about trying to cover everything, I mean, some people might get offended because you aren't covering board games either! How else will we know if Scrabble is lesbian friendly?

My last question, since this site is big on supporting entertainment products created by lesbians, do you know if any games are being produced by lesbians? I must admit I am curious.

Thanks for covering all those games!

Thanks for the advise, I will definitely check out the PS2 version because I ended up having to sell the Nds version because I just couldn't get used to it.
