Keith Olbermann speaks out on the importance of gay marriage

MSBNC talk show host Keith Olbermann devoted his "special comment" tonight to the issue of gay marriage, asking those who voted for Proposition 8 and similar measures, "Why does this matter to you? What is it to you? In a time of impermanence and fly-by-night relationships these people over here want the same chance at permanence and happiness that is your option."

It's a powerful and emotional speech by a straight person directed to other straight people — and that's exactly what's needed if we're going to win this fight.

    Thank You Keith

I saw this earlier tonight, and Keith touched my heart and soul with this special comment.  I'm so glad to see a broadcaster finally step up to the plate and give their two cents on this discrimination.  I thought he was going to breakdown for a minute, but he held it together.  This  argument should be praised all over the country and get people to change some of their ignorant reasonings for gay marriage.

    Great Stuff

I'm not normally a fan of Olbermann, but that brought tears to my eyes.  One of the best pleas for equality I think I've ever seen.

    Kudos to Keith O.

Yay for tonight's special comment. Hope it helps some to rethink their opposition to gay marriage.

He earned my respect in less than 7 minutes

I wish the lgbt community could, in some way, have a press release saying thank you to Keith Olbermann. That was spectacular :)

that has got to be the most

that has got to be the most powerful and profound speech I have heard on the subject. and funny enough it comes from a straight man. he gives me hope. not just because what he says is true, but because he sees clearly on the issue and he is not even involved. if one straight person can see that clearly others will follow!

    thank you Keith.

    My love for Keith...

... has always been strong and unwaivering, but after that Special Comment, it's unparalleled.

He has a way with words that is really only comparable to, well, President-Elect Barack Obama.

Thank you, Keith. Thank you for finally making me cry.

I was waiting for this to be posted...

I was catching up on my Rachel Maddow Show videos over at msnbc.com and stumbled upon this one. I've been a fan of Olbermann's for a while, and this just reaffirms my opinion that he's a great guy. Straight people standing up for gay rights always makes me teary. :)

ETA: Between Rachel and Keith, I think MSNBC's lesbian audience has just octupled. :D

    Keith

I watch Countdown pretty regularly (mainly because it's just before The Rachel Maddow Show) and usually find it pretty entertaining. But tonight was completely different. I've never been so touched than I was tonight via a speech, political commentator or otherwise.

This is definately one to remember and I hope that we can show our support and gratitude toward him in some way as well.

This got me teary-eyed. Very moving. Thank you for posting this.

It's always a good day to have someone on our side. God bless you, Keith Olbermann. :)

This kind of statement is definitly what could reach people outside of the community the most.

This video should get viral, let's all post it in our myspace/facebook...etc profile, the more gets to see it the better it will be.

Everything with passion, nothing with talent...

    Yeah...

I watched this earlier and cried. And, I hate crying. But, hearing that passion and eloquence (and the holding back of tears, it seemed) from Keith... Just, wow. I love this guy. And, maybe, just maybe he was able to change at least one mind.

Thank you, Sarah, for posting this here.

    wonderful

This is the first time since prop eight passed that I've really felt happy and optimistic. I emailed this video to everyone I love, because he says everything I am always struggling to put into words for them.

I can't thank him enough for that.

I just saw that somewhere else. Everything he says is amazing. And I sure hope people will really listen to what he has to say, because it's so true... I mean really listen. Listen so people will see the hypocritical things in their 'christian' thoughts... This speach was just amazing!

what an amazing man; I have so much respect for olbermann, and I'm going to spread this clip as far as I can. He's absolutely right; and I truly hope that America moves towards a society that recognizes that no matter what, we are all the same. and in this incredibly trying time, it is more important than ever to treat our fellow man with respect and dignity.

    What a difference..

NBC V ABC....hmm..no contest eh? But then I think we already knew that.

That was a brilliant speech and one that was very much needed. This subject needs to be brought in to the mainstream, not solely cornered into gay columns or cable channels. I liked his comment about not having any personal interests in Prop 8. The community need heterosexual people who live in a mainly heterosexual social group to support us like this. Thank-you very much and good luck to everyone who is still fighting over there in California. Don't give up!

    WOW

This made me cry. I just wish everyone saw things as clearly and sensibly as him. Even if people dont agree with gay marriage, or even the idea of being gay, their own personal prejudices shouldnt ever ever stop people from having rights. This fight will be won, but much faster if there are more straight people who can be bothered to care.

    I think how heartfelt this

I think how heartfelt this messasge is makes it so poignant, the words of course are important and beautiful but he feels this to his soul and it just it soo much more powerful. It's important to remember that straight people are allies and I don't think there could have been a better speech for the defense of LGBT rights to marry.

You know what I mean.  I watched that last night and was bawling.  I look forward to Keith and Rachel's show every day.  Two of the smartest people on TV!

    Keith

Wonderful heartfelt comments. He put the entire scenario in such simple terms. Why should it matter to others, and what are we taking away from them? It simply is a matter of doing unto others as you would have them do unto you....it's the golden rule by which we should all live.

    I was waiting for this

I caught this last night while I was waiting for Rachel Maddow to come on. I thought he said it very well and hopefully some of the people who did vote for Prop 8 were listening. It pretty much almost made me cry.

Wow, I felt his emotions. Wow, how powerful and heartfelt his commentary was. I'm glad millions of viewers saw it too. I hope those who voted against prop 8 feel guilty and have a change of heart and min to which they want to support the LGBTQI marriage rights. There is hope and a beckon of light to help guide the way to equality for all.

    Cool Keith!

My new nickname for Keith is Cool Keith!

Way to go Keith! I'm so relieved that MSNBC is covering this,

all the protests, etc... Too often in our recent past the media has ignored the voices of

protesters maybe it was the Bush administration, whatever the case, it gives me

hope again, so thanks to you guys at MSNBC, and thanks Keith Olbermann!

    Rachel's response?

Usually I only watch the last 5 minutes of KO while waiting for Rachel's show, and find his rants at the end a little self-indulgent.  However, in the last few weeks he has made several impassioned pleas regarding equality, and this just tops them all.   The one thing I have always admired is that Keith clearly is genuine about his beliefs, and this was tremendously moving.

Sarah - at the MSNBC site it is not obvious how to get a message of thanks to Keith.  Would it be possible for you to get him some form of thanks - and link to this page ;-).  Having Rachel following him must have boosted his ratings too, and I'm sure many more will now be tuning in to the whole hour as a show of thanks. His lesbian and bisexual demographic likely just shot up significantly!

Knowing how much of a softie Rachel is, I would have loved to have seen her reaction to this piece as he handed the show over to her....anyone else catch it?

    MsSullivan's picture

    That was incredibly beautiful.

I hope he knows how meaningful that was to the community. That was the hands-down, best, most heartfelt, most appropriate explanation of why gay marriage matters that I think I've ever heard. I mean, I love it when Ellen brings it up on her show, I love it when gays speak out for themselves, but on the single topic of marriage... Best speech advocating for it that I've ever seen.

    wow

this almost made me cry=O damn that man can speak.  i wish that all straight people could be like him, and stand for our rights,..

and i loved that he kept asking what it is to them, why they can't let us have what they have,

Love is a powerful thing that keeps us alive.
