News, Reviews & Commentary on Lesbian and Bisexual women in Entertainment and the Media

Gay men's hottest men, and the women they remind me of

Our brother site AfterElton.com has just released the first annual AfterElton.com Hot 100 List — which features the hottest men as chosen by thousands of gay and bisexual men — and the guy who topped the list? The same one who topped Malinda's list of top ten lesbian-ish men: Jake Gyllenhaal.

In fact, everyone on Malinda's list but John Cusack made AfterElton.com's list, which makes me wonder if maybe lesbians and gay men aren't that different after all. (Although, no John Cusack? That's a crime!)

But I have to confess, I don't even know who some of the guys on their list are. Like Chris Evans (No. 2), who is apparently in the Fantastic Four movies, which I've never seen. I considered seeing them briefly, for Jessica Alba, but I prefer her with dark hair. A blonde Jessica Alba just doesn't work for me — I like my Alba a little edgier. Although she is bringing on the fierce here:

But back to hot men I don't know: No. 23 on their list is Channing Tatum. Um, any relation to Tatum O'Neal? Speaking of Tatum, it appears she has reconciled with former step-mother Farrah Fawcett, according to a new interview with Access Hollywood. Is it just me, or does doing a TV interview about how she's praying for Farrah (who has cancer) seem a little exploitive? And while Tatum looked good in Rescue Me, I really didn't like her character. Not that I really like any of the characters on that show anymore.

Where was I? Oh yes: No. 95 Sufjan Stevens? No clue. I do like Cynthia Stevenson on Men in Trees, though. She makes a fun curmudgeonly cop.

Cynthia was great in Live Nude Girls, too, a fun, little-known 1995 film co-starring Kim Catrall, Dana Delany, and Olivia D'Abo as a lesbian. In a rather amusing scene, Cynthia's straight-laced character gets drunk and kisses Olivia by the pool.

Clearly I'm not only not an expert on hot guys, I can't even stay focused on them long enough to write more than a sentence about them. But a lot of the non-lesbian/bi people who read our list didn't have a clue who Leisha Hailey was, so I don't feel too bad.

Test your knowledge of the hot guys here, and let us know how you fare!

    Sufjan Stevens

Sufjan Stevens is a singer and songwriter. He is apparently making concept albums for each of the 50 states (So far he's done Michigan and Illinois). Just a tidbit.

Well i knew of 71. Is that a good thing or a bad thing?

I noticed that our namesake was on our list, but Elton wasnt on theirs. Not that im surprised, mind you. Does this mean lesbians age better than gay men??? :P

~I've been watching your world from afar, I've been trying to be where you are, I've been secretly falling apart...~

    Sort of...

I think it means practically anybody ages better than Elton John.  :)

    hahaha

on a whole I was really pleased with the variety of ethnicities and body types.

but, dude. seeing The Rock and Seth Green next to each other was pretty freakin' funny, in my opinion.

    very diverse

wow, I feel kind of strange having just looked at so many men... Anyway, I also thought the list was quite diverse (and I usually have great difficulties understanding movies because I mix up all the men as they seem to be looking all the same to me). hm, I only knew about one third of the list. But hey, I know Sufjan Stevens ;). Lovely calm music, I even liked his Christmas songs compilation!

    94. Cillian Murphy

Now that guy is VERY lesbianish... I was like, they put a woman on the hot men's list! But who is he?
    chelley's picture

    Cillian

was in 28 Days Later and Batman Begins if my memory serves me right!
    mollyblooming's picture

Cillian was also in the Wes

Cillian was also in the Wes Craven thriller Red Eye, with The McAdams...

    wtf?

Why the frak are we reading about gay men here? Yes, we're nice people who believe in equality, but did the AfterElton blog say anything at all about our hotties? Do they talk about lesbians at all? No, because gay men do not care about lesbians and lesbians keep stupidly thinking they do.

This is the one place I feel safe and free to just be me without men saying wait, look at us too. Or it was.

If I wanted to read about gay men, not that I do, I'd go to EVERY OTHER GAY SITE and read every other gay magazine and watch every gay cable channel.  hmm...maybe that's the whole problem here.  Logo is all about the gay guys.

whatever. Go ahead and tell me I'm too separatist or making generalizations or stopping progress or whatever, but I thought this site was for women.

Even if you disagree with me, I bet you were surprised to see a blog about gay men. It's just...WTF.

Jeez, we all still live on

Jeez, we all still live on the same, small ball of rock hurtling through space at ungodly speeds headed toward ultimate doom and eventual nonexistence...ya might want to lighten up!! ;)

    AfterElton.com has plugged

AfterElton.com has plugged our Hot 100 List, several times. In fact, the AfterElton.com Hot 100 List prominently mentions and links to our list in their opening paragraphs, which means many of the straight women who are going to rush to check out their list will visit AfterEllen.com, too - and some just may decide they want to stay. :)

I understand your frustration with how gay men tend to ignore lesbians, and about how most co-ed LGBT publications and organizations make it all about gay men. I get tired of that myself. But Michael Jensen, the Editor in Chief of AfterElton.com, is not one of those guys - he is well aware of, and also frustrated by, the inequalities of how lesbians are treated, because he's a good guy, and because he works for me and has been listening to me rant about it for years :). His partner Brent (with whom he does a weekly video blog) has also written several young adult novels about a gay teenager with a fantastic bi Chinese American girl named Min who made our 13 Lesbian and Bi Characters You Should Know list. So perhaps not ALL gay men are evil. ;)

Logo is also not one of those types of organizations, as you can tell by its shows like Curl Girls and the upcoming lesbian series Exes and Ohs. But regardless, Logo has nothing to do with this blog post, or the topics we write about - they're all chosen by me and my staff.

Lastly, you'll notice I took a post about gay men and turned it into one that was really about women. That's my way of letting you know about the list - since this blog is about general pop culture news - but really making it all about us.

    Sarah:  While I understand

Sarah:  While I understand the camaradery and other ties with the AfterElton.com site, I think the AfterEllen list of hot women was huge precisely because there were hot women.  Even my little blog got huge amount of visitors just because I mentioned the list too.
But it feels a bit weird to see the list of men in here.  Funny thing, I just proved to myself once more how much of a lesbian I am... I'm not even interested on checking out the list, but I'll let know other friends and contribute with them!

    Umm...

Before you get all separatist, as you call it, you might want to consider that there's only one photo of a man here, and that the entire premise of the blog was related to  'the most lesbian-ish men' blog previously posted on afterellen.

Also, just in case this blog was a little too male-centric for you, take a look again at the clip of the two women kissing.
    fennelbird's picture

one thing that's still very lesbian about this site

is how quick everyone is to defend themselves. Heehee.

Fine, I understand what everyone's saying. Lighten up, it's all fun, it's all fine. I'll get right on that.

I just know I miss the Afterellen I used to know, for lots of reasons. Not blaming you, Sarah. Everything changes. But the atmosphere here is so different. There's so much more and yet so much less.

    I'll shut up now.
    chelley's picture

Dont know if its a good thing...

however, I would say I know about 70% of them, but well i do watch a lot of tv/movies!!

    Sufjan Stevens

He's really really amazing. I had no idea what he looked like (go figure), but he's an amazing songwriter, and his voice is beautiful.

    59%

I knew who 59% of the men listed are. Which isn't all that strange because I'm sure we've got women on our hot list that gay men know nothing about.

was in she's the man (the twelfth night remake) as duke. i recognized a lot of the men from the list, but couldn't place them necessarily. (thank you imdb?)

    There were only 12 I didn't

There were only 12 I didn't know. Should I send back my toaster? (By the way, the only reason I knew who Channing Tatum was was because there was a rumor he was dating our beloved #49, the divine Ms. Musgrave (false, by the way))

hmm...wonder what a lesbian's list of hot men would look like :)

My reaction to the men's list is: wow! our aesthetics are obviously soooo different , apart from the obvious (...ugh, that we don't want to screw them!) many of their choices made me positively cringe, eg. Daniel Craig (eew...hate his body!), Eric Mabius (huh? he looks like white bread!), Andy Roddick (WTF)...

So I wondered what a lesbian list of hot men would look like. My top 10 would be:

    1. Johnny Depp

    2. James McAvoy (lots of buzz, young Scots actor who's going to be everywhere on your screens soon!)

    3. Gael Garcia Bernal

    4.Ryan Gosling

    5. Clive Owen

    6. ALan Rickman

    7. Tony Leung (In the Mood for Love)

    8. John Legend

    9. Jeremy Irons

    10.Hugh Laurie

    oppositeworld's picture

    I agree with: Johnny Depp,

I agree with: Johnny Depp, Alan Rickman (that voice is awesome), and Hugh Laurie.

Guess I like my Brits? Yeah, we should try to do a list of hot men, as picked by lesbians.

    notshane's picture

Oops! maybe my list is similar to Malinda's lesbianish men..

    Maybe...or maybe not.

Going through my list again, I reckon the characteristic that they all share is what I perceive as their comfort and ease with their feminine qualities....LOVE THAT!

    So, is that lesbianish???

    cassandra0543's picture

    Maybe it's a lesbian thing

Maybe it's a lesbian thing of mine, but guys I would not really think would rank so highly on the list did (ie paul rudd - not that he's not an attractive man, but really the 21 spot?). And Anderson Cooper? Really? I've heard of most of the guys on the list though (blame it on the many straight women friends of mine and my penchant for watching an exorbitant amount of tv and movies). Thanks for the link - i'm sure there are bisexual women who appreciate this link too (therefore i don't see a problem with posting this on afterellen)

I can't believe Jude Law didn't make their list!

For the naysayers here, I enjoyed looking through their list and had been looking forward to it.  I called a gay co-worker over and we went through the list with our 'yays' and 'nays'.  We have...different opinions on men, go figure.  Hah!

Much as our list highlighted many women from the L word, their list highlighted many men from Queer as Folk and other gay film stars.  While I wasn't surprised, I thought it was interesting.

I'm very glad it was highlighted here and, of course, it should have been.

    Ha!

I called a gay co-worker over and we went through the list with our 'yays' and 'nays'.

I did the very same thing! We also thought it was pretty interesting how our tastes differed. ("Really? You like him?" "You're kidding -- how did he get in the top 10?")

The way I see it, this post has taken great strides in bringing the gay boys and lesbians closer together. :)

    IMHO

Laura wrote: "The way I see it, this post has taken great strides in bringing the gay boys and lesbians closer together." Amen to that.

    Great job Sarah!

The other thing I'm absolutely glad about is the fact that not one of the guys voted for Tom Cruise.

Thanks Sarah for the link. As one of the bi women who visits this site, I appreciate it. I was pleasantly surprised (as I was with the 100 on the AfterEllen list) to find several of my favorites. :)

    Sarah, you rock!

I have to say, I think this blog 100% belongs on this site and I'm actually quite suprised anyone would disagree. This site is about the entertainment industry and the media from a lesbian and bisexual perspective. Which is exactly what that blog was. It took a great topic and discussed it from an AfterEllen perspective. It's no more or less relevant to lesbians than the blog on The Princess Bride or the Emmy nominations. I think one of the things that makes this site so great and so entertaining is the wide variety of topics that get discussed in the articles, blogs and posts. I read the ones of interest to me and skip the rest, as should anyone else. But I know when I come to this site I will always find great stuff to read that is fresh, funny and topical and comes from a perspective I can relate to (even if I don't always agree with) a lesbian/bisexual perspective. Oh yeah and I'm certain all the bisexual women loved this list of men as much as the list of women and what a shame if it hadn't been posted! Keep up the good work!
