Well! What to say - other than nothing on the political side - and so, no SuperBowl Parties on these sides: its all about the desserts that will go best with the next L Word episode.

    Hillary Clinton

I don't get the attraction of Obama for so many people. He is inexperienced and hasn't done much since he has been in the Senate. As such, Hillary is the only candidate worth voting for.
    pecola's picture

    Me Either

I don't see much difference either...

Just because one candidate takes money from lobbyists and PACs and the other doesn't.

Just because one candidate voted for the war, won't admit that vote was a mistake, and the other has nothing to apologize for because that candidate was against the war from the beginning.

Just because one candidate trusted the President again when labeling the Iranian Guard a terrorist organization and another does not.

Yeah, I can't imagine why people...

    Oh.

    Wait.

    Dammit.

    Foiled again.

That is on my list of things to do before I die, among many other things.  Sounds like you had a good time!  Your tan looks Mahvelous!

I look forward to voting on Tuesday here in CA.  But November is a long ways off still, and that is the vote that really counts. All I can hope for is that the turnout in November is so overwhelming that there will be no way for a certain political party to employ the shady electoral shennanigans that have been their M.O. in the recent past. (Not that electoral shennanigans have been solely limited to one party over the history of our Republic). But dangman!  Affordable health insurance sure would be nice.  And if enough seats turn from R to D in the house and senate, then we might actually get legistlation passed that would bring health care costs down. So much damage to undo.  It will take many many years.

Loved your joke about "change".  I just started going through "the change", and this "change" really sucks. But the silver lining to this intermittent hot sweaty gray cloud is that my heating bill this winter will be much lower than last year's.  ; )

    Brenda/Van/Cam

You know, the whole Brenda transitioning shtick isn't amusing anymore. I know that Kate' job is to make everything a joke or a deprecatation or a needling, but I'm a little peeved. It's starting to feel just a little insensitive and put on (like when Oprah does an episode about gays and lesbians and plays dumb). If Brenda/Van/Cam is transitioning, then I'm assuming Brenda/Van/Cam has chosen one set of pronouns to use. Please use them. The paranthetic self-correction is not cute or amusing.

I love the vlog when it discusses politics. When you sing Hillary's praises, my heart sings. There are shrewd, funny insights. Let's keep the focus on the politics, you know, the purpose of the vlog.

Seems like there is always going to be a price to pay for supporting hillary- including offending friendds who think that Obama is the choice for Change- whatever that means- well done on sticking to your guns on supporting Hills as do I-

On a different note- do let Brenda en cam once she/he has transitioned- otherwise we worry your alterego- beautiful and inciteful as she/he may be is taking over the vlogs in disguise is there a brenda out there.......- !!

    Hi Kate !

You're doing a good job there. Like your style, dry and pithy, with the right dose of irony added to the mix.

Not much interest for football on my side of the pond though. I would also like you to focus a bit more on politics, maybe going a bit more into detail.

I think a little injection of chivalry would be good for american politics, which has been dominated by unscrupulous capitalistic greed and insane religious fundamentalism, charmingly represented by the GOP, for too many years now.

Speaking of which, I never laughed about any of Huckabee's jokes. This guy is a freakin' fundamentalist, which means he is nothing else than a fascist. No other nation in the free world is exhibiting such a degree of religious fanatism as the US. You have a real problem there that must be solved. And quick.

I don't understand why the supporters of Clinton and Obama are bashing each other so seriously. Their positions are nearly equal, differing only in details. Both of them would make a good president. Much more important is that the Democrats must really break the GOP's grip on the US this time, securing a majority in Congress and wining the White House, so that new policies can be implemented quickly and efficiently. There is A LOT of damage to repair, also in the US's relations to its allies (meaning us, old europe, yes we're still here). A lot of people here are very concerned about what has been going on in America in recent years. We hope that the american people will send us a clear signal in the upcoming presidential election, that the majority of them have not forgotten that the foundation the american nation was build upon is not the old testament, but its constitiution.

Looking forward to your next vlog and Super Tuesday !

    No Title

Hahaha! There is no Brenda/van/Cam. If she's transition from Female to Male she would been a he by now regardless of operation. So start calling her a he. You're confusing me. Oooo that ryhmes. I don't think threre is no Brenda anyway. I go along with your play.

Hillary's got my vote. John McCain is 71, really? Don't worry Kate, McCain isn't going to pick Huckabee as his running mate.

Have fun at your Superbowl Party. Go Patriots!

    Don't Be Too Sure

If I had to place a bet right now on the frontrunner for the vice-presidency, assuming McCain wins the nomination, it'd be Mike Huckabee...particularly if Hillary Clinton is the Democratic nominee.

Here's why I (and Chris Cillizza) think that's true:

    1. For reasons I have yet to understand, the Republican evangelical base hates John McCain...selecting a governor/Southern Baptist minister would certainly pacify them.

    2. McCain and Huckabee genuinely like each other...which can't be said of, say, McCain and Romney.

    3. Huckabee brings executive experience and, perhaps, a better understanding of economics.

    3. Huckabee's been throwing out the red meat to Republican primary voters, but mark my words...this man is capable of appealing to a wider base, particularly among socially conservative minorities (Hispanics and African-Americans). There's a reason Huckabee took 40 percent of the black vote when he ran for governor.

    5. If Hillary's the Democratic nominee, Huckabee keeps Arkansas in play for Republicans.

    I think Brenda/Cam might be a metaphor

I have from the beginning had doubts about Brenda's existence and I think her transition is really just a symbol for the change needed in american politics. Kate says she supports Brenda and all kinds of change and from what I've understood change is a keyword in the political discussions right now.

Anyway Kate, I like your vlogs, they're smart and funny and they help us non-americans keep up a bit with the american politics.

    huzzahbravo's picture

    Interesting,

however, if Brenda is a metaphor, wouldn't it have been more powerful (and perhaps appropriate) to have a male to female transition (particularly given Kate's pro-Hillary stance)? A male to female transition/metaphor would have more quickly communicated the symbolism of a nation's indeciveness about a historic change in its leader's gender or race.

Nice double entendre there, Kate.  The UPS advertising slogan and the Bush immigration policy, all rolled into one.  Good work.

    Visits from the Clintons...

...but sadly not from Kate :(

Hillary is coming to my school on Monday!  Chelsea visited us (Clark University, Worcester, MA) a week or so ago and was very cool.  I have no idea why Hillary is coming to Clark because we tend to be very pro-Obama, but I'm still wicked excited to hear her speak (I stand proudly in the pro-Sen. Clinton minority.)

If your prediction that President Bush will be out of office at some point does NOT come true, I will be very, very scared. On the happy side, keep the hilarity coming!

    The great and the just?

Thanks for a great vlog Kate.

I've been watching the US elections from afar and it's fascinating. Firstly because I live in the UK and election time here is a much more understated affair so it's an interesting comparison. And secondly it's interesting to see how both the UK and US elections and candidates differ to those in South Africa (where I'm from). In South Africa our current president utters marvellous insights like 'HIV doesn't cause AIDS', although he has admittedly done a great job with our economy...However, our future president Jacob Zuma (who is now head of ANC ergo 99% likely to be next president) has just been cleared of RAPE in a recent trial, and has a corruption charge pending. He allegedly raped an HIV positive woman but he says it was consensual sex, but the worrying bit (as if that wasn't worrying enough) is that he said that he wasn't worried about getting AIDS because he 'had a shower afterwards'. Thank god we now have a democracy in South Africa, but I do wish politicians were as answerable to misconduct as they are in the UK or US. Saying that, I could very easily use the words 'Bush' and 'misconduct' in the same sentence. Thank god that either way he will be OUT.

I can't figure out who will win the race...both Hillary and Obama seem credible, but will they beat the Republicans who knows.

Whatever happens, I just wish ALL politicians the world over would serve their country in the just manner that they're supposed to. Is that too much to ask of these 'great' men or women??

    Welcome Back!

We certainly missed you, and were green with envy (and perhaps you with seasickness?) while you were gone, Kate! And, now that the Superbowl is now thankfully a momentous piece of history, it's time to focus on what really counts -- who will be running our country for the next four years.

It is good to hear that Obama is gaining momentum, even if I haven't yet decided for whom I'm voting. Quite frankly, I like them both, for different reasons. Whether it's Obama or HillBilly (the dual presidency option), let's face it -- we're all better off no matter who wins. Whichever emerges as victor, I truly hope they'll consider a pres/vice pres ticket. It can't get any stronger than that!

Thanks for your continued contributions, Kate, and, once again, welcome home!

I just went to see Hillary speak at California State University Los Angeles (CSULA) on saturaday, and I must say that she's a great speaker and I really do feel she will make great changes in our country. Also the primaries on Feb. 5 will be my first time voting (im 18) and im so excited to vote for my candidate.

Statement Released Today by Margie Adam

From me to you, with love and respect... In the spirit of Gloria Steinem, Maxine Waters, Kathleen Kennedy Townsend, Cris Williamson, Maya Angelou, Wilma Mankiller, Kate Clinton, Dolores Huerta, Sheila Kuehl and Robin Morgan among so many others, now is the time for those of us who support Hillary Clinton to speak out. I have been actively supporting Hillary Clinton's candidacy for months now and nothing that has been said about her by others, no interpretation or characterization of her voting record as a US Senator, her experience as an activist First Lady, and her commitments as young community and women's rights organizer has given me reason to change my mind. I am an artist-activist, a feminist and lesbian committed to making radical social change through involvement in mainstream electoral politics since Eugene McCarthy's 1968 presidential campaign. Over the last four decades, I've joined with organizations like National Women's Political Caucus and Emily's List along with hundreds of thousands of women and women-loving men determined to elect pro-choice progressive women to local, state and national office. Those of us who have done that work - at any level, in any capacity- have our fingerprints all over the historic candidacy of Hillary Clinton. I am proud to do what I can, where I am, with what I have to elect this brilliant, compassionate, tough and tested woman - the most qualified candidate: Hillary Clinton, to be the next president of the United States. In sisterhood! Margie Please feel free to share this email with friends and colleagues.

    Obama’s Dirty Tricks?

Dear Sisters and Brothers for Hillary,

Let me call to Hillary’s attention to what is being said about her and Bill and Chelsea on one very nasty pro-Obama website I came across, www.matrix-evolutions.com. They are actually connecting up Bill’s Monica tryst with parental sexual abuse on Chelsea if you can believe it!  Whether it is better not paid attention to or countered, I don’t know, but somebody who does know what the right response is should be made aware of this. The beginning of this website. which focuses on the election reads:

We are scientists who derive our politics from an evolutionary perspective, not from conservative ideology. Our analysis concludes that our so-called war on terror is slowly but surely taking us to World War III.  Note Putin’s 2/8/08 call for a renewed arms race to counter America’s efforts to conquer the world. For that reason we support Barack Obama as the only real anti-war candidate, the only one who can keep such a nuclear tipped train wreck from happening.

As to Hillary Clinton, recall during their populist administration that President Bill and missus, while promising health care they never delivered, did deliver more police and prisons, and took our jail population to the highest per-capita level in the world. This statistic, ahem, is historically associated with hardened police states like Stalinist Russia and apartheid South Africa. We all know that spitting on the street nowadays will get you six months in jail. But of course we’re not a police state, because if we were, you’d have heard about it on the evening news.

The Clintons as president also made their upper class handlers happy by ending LBJs war on poverty, which brought about the vast population of homeless beggars we see on the streets of America today. Pearls for the wealthy, evictions for the rest of us. Don’t laugh. It could happen to you. Wait until the recession, caused primarily by our trillion dollar War in Iraq, gets into high gear. Goodbye nest egg when the market totally collapses. Goodbye home thanks to the Shylock mortgage brokers in bed with the conservatives. Hello suffering on the street with your kids in a foster home.

Actually Hillary does have a few things she can be very proud of.  She is a most talented actress, a profoundly adept social climber and a top paid shill of the upper class. She is our American Evita and almost everybody loves her style. But whatever her talents and personal accomplishments, she is not going to go against the wishes of the ruling clique who created her and Bill and stop their war.

Some think that Hillary would never lie to us. But Bill also insisted he would never lie to us and is so amazingly good an actor, almost as good as his wife,  that we yet believe him even after the tape recording caught him with the cigar between Monica’s legs. What character is there in a first family when the head of the most powerful nation on earth is sticking a penile object, not even his own, up some college kid’s vagina? Does anybody think Hillary felt personally bad about the Monica thing other than not having her usual go with one of Bill’s girls? Watch the conservatives bring forth one of Hillary’s lovers soon to clarify her tastes in this area. Indeed, one would not be surprised if the less than confident, slightly retarded, persona Chelsea Clinton was condemned to live her life with derives from her pervert parents abusing her when she was four years old. Certainly there is as much truth in this conjecture as in the equally outrageous conjecture that the Clintons are not good people even though they go to church every Sunday. If evil is badness that comes from an unexpected source, the Clintons are evil enough to have shit stuffed in their mouths and be set on fire. That’s an opinion of their character, not a threat on their lives, for all you hate speech monitors out there.

Unfortunately, though, short of a revolution, we may be stuck with another Clinton figurehead presidency, for our evolutionary analysis shows clearly that while biological evolution is not of intelligent design, our presidential elections are. They are intelligently designed by the conservative ruling clique that has hold of our media and our courts, including our Supreme Court, which designed the last election outcome. Which all of you meekly accepted because the majority of Americans are basically passive cowards who lack the courage it takes to stand up to tyranny. The upper classes would never allow Obama to become president and stop the war. They would assassinate him first, literally have him shot like Martin Luther King, if the media they control can’t derail his candidacy in a more subtle way. We reach these outrageous conclusions, not from bipolar disease, but from a firm scientific analysis whose details follow after we have introduced ourselves.

    I hope this information helps.

    Onward to victory,

    Martha Turner
