Gro of Arc, and other queer renditions of great women in history

This photo of openly gay Norwegian handball star Gro Hammerseng — whom you might remember from the Olympics, where she led her team to a Gold medal —was used in a calendar for Norwegian magazine Henne wearing a 40 kg (88 pound) armored knight costume in a recreation of a Joan of Arc battle scene:

It's a stunning photo, and before you ask — no, it isn't photoshopped. They actually recreated the battle scene for the photo shoot, like they do on movie sets.

"We wanted to show people the celebrities in a surprising and different situation with weight on the cultural historical and literary setting, with a touch of 'fairytale,'" said the calendar's editor. "As an editor, it's fantastic to be able to play so much while shooting."

(Apparently it wasn't as much fun for photographer Mona Nordoy, who said the horse began to run off at one point when Gro leaned too far in one direction, and she "almost puked" because, "I was afraid I had ruined the career of one of Norway's biggest athletes.")

The calendar's editor-in-chief is very pleased with how Gro's picture turned out, saying, "The combination of femininity and masculinity is fantastic."

This photo got me thinking — what would it look like if someone created a calendar exclusively of lesbian and bisexual women recreating famous women in history?

I decided to try my hand at envisioning what one might look like (since it's a weekend, and I clearly have too much free time). The results are below.

(In case Ellen's head on Queen Elizabeth's body didn't give it away — yes, these photos ARE photoshopped!)

Ellen DeGeneres as QUEEN ELIZABETH I of England
(Fifth and last monarch of the Tudor dynasty)

Wanda Sykes as BESSIE COLEMAN
(first African-American pilot)

Shamim Sharif as INDIRA GANDHI
(India's first and so far only female prime minister
)

Rachel Maddow as AMELIA EARHART
(first woman to receive the Distinguished Flying Cross)

Jessica Clark as CLEOPATRA VII
(ancient ruler of Egypt)

Lindsay Lohan as MARIE CURIE
(Nobel-prize winning physicist and chemist)

(Heh. It was hard not to laugh while making this last one! Even Lindsay seems to be laughing at the idea of her as Marie Curie.)

Alas, since it's unlikely that we'll see such a calendar anytime soon, I'm just going to enjoy this photo one more time:

Gro Hammerseng as JOAN OF ARC
(15th Century French hero and Catholic Saint)

Yep, still stunning!

    Wow.

That picture is amazing. And it wouldn't make sense to have anyone but Gro be Joan of Arc. I'm totally saving that to my computer. Awesome... and I must say, pretty hot.

And Lindsay Lohan as Marie Curie? XD

    Feylamia's picture

    I've never seen the Lohan

I've never seen the Lohan Lady looking hotter. ;)

The photografer of Gro's picture is a woman

Her name is Mona Nordøy and you can read about her and find the picture of Gro here: http://www.fotografmona.com/home.html

    Thanks for the info!

I couldn't find the photographer's name in the Norwegian articles about the photo.

I just added Mona's name and a link to her site to the blog post.

Bow to the powers of photoshop!

I love Rachel Maddow as Amelia Earhart!

Great job; you just have to whip up a couple more and AfterEllen can sell their own calendars! (We created wildlife calendars for my work at a wildlife refuge centre; they're a great fundraiser!)

some believable, some not so much

Wow, I literally got chills looking at that picture of Gro as Joan of Arc. Amazing.

"The calendar's editor-in-chief is very pleased with how Gro's picture turned out, saying, "The combination of femininity and masculinity is fantastic.""

    I couldn't agree more.

As for Sarah's photoshop attempts, they range from not bad at all (Rachel and Wanda) to funny (Ellen) to "Come on, now!" (Lindsey Lohan as Marie Curie? I can't suspend my disbelief THAT much!).

Thanks again for great queer woman related news that I probably would not find anywhere else :).

Lindsey Lohan as Marie Curie, LMAO

It looks less like a noble prize winner and more like she's just cooking up some meths!!

Love the original Gro pic tho... its a lovely horse!

Woman, you had WAY too much time...I'm just jealous, I had way too much time this weekend too.  The only thing I managed to do was some cleaning, cooking, and re-watched Fried Green Tomatoes and Fingersmith...lol.

Gro makes me reconsider blondes.  XD.

    I heart Gro

Gro Hammerseng looks spectacular in this photo. I may have a slight crush on this Norwegian athelete. whoops.

The Lindsay Lohan photo just looks too realistic are you sure it was photoshopped? It has to be - there's no way she would actually know how to make all the drugs she puts in her body. She's not that smart.

Your free time always brings out the best blogs. Thanks!

    thinkpunk's picture

    absolutely brilliant.

this is how a calendar with stunning women is supposed to look. don't take boring pictures of them posing half naked. you create a scene where they can portray their utter awesomeness.

The pics are great! The real Gro and fake Lindsay pics are keepers. Was Marie Curie really queer though?

    Sarah Warn's picture

    Marie Curie

Marie Curie was married to a fellow (male) scientist.

The women I photoshopped into the historic photos are all gay/bi (e.g. Ellen, Wanda, Jessica), but the women they're posing as aren't — I just chose great women in history posing in photos that were easy to doctor. Most of the historical figures are straight or sexual orientation unknown (at least, unknown to me).

Glad you liked the photos! :)

    great job Sarah. the photos

great job Sarah. the photos look amazing. I especially love Rachel Maddow as Amelia Earheart. very well done.

I would buy a calendar like that any time ;)

Marie Curie in a hoodie - outstanding!

Btw, another queer media link - Vita Sackville-West wrote a biography of Joan of Arc entitled (surprisingly enough), "Saint Joan of Arc" in which she claims Joan for our team.

Vita's affair with Violet Keppel was made into a TV series (adapted from another biography), "Portrait of a Marriage"; which I seem to remember contained some pretty racy lesbionic scenes for its day!

I love Gro! She's an inspiration.

Man.. Norwegians are so open minded about homosexuality. The fact they absolutely embraced her for who she is and not play it down like *ahem* most countries, is just an envy for all of us NOT living there.

Nice photos though. Lindsay= keeper. Rachel Maddow= looks reeeaallly tall.

    The magic of photoshop

That photo of Gro is stunning!

Shamim's photo looks so real I wouldn't even know it's photoshopped.

Jessica is unbelievably gorgeous. I totally buy her as Cleopatra.

Lindsay looks like she's excited preparing for some pot XD

    History lesson

Don't think of it as having too much time on your hands....think of it as providing the readers a history lesson.  I did not know who Bessie Coleman was, and now I do.

I love the picture of Gro, however the picture of Lindsay gave me the biggest laugh.

No intents offended, but I prefer the nonphoto shopped shot. The others are just, stuff, you know? The original Gro shot is an actual shot. It has value for both the subject and the intent. The other pictures, which granted, I barely looked at, are without meaning. Junk imagry.

    Lindsay Curie

Scrolling down and just reading that headline "Lindsay Lohan as Marie Curie" I couldn't believe the combination. But the grin and that hoodie definitely delivered on that one!

    Great job!

Well I don't know of any

Well I don't know of any calanders with famous lesbian and bi women posing as historical figures, but there is a Swedish book (calander really) called H.O.M.O. created by photographer Elisabeth Ohlson Wallin (most famous for her exhibition Ecce homo) and priest Lars Gårdfeldt which is about how LGBT people don't really have any saints to look up to or pray to and therefore they have had people (both men and women) pose as people like Joan of Arc, Lucia, Noomi and Ruth and other less known but that has still done a great deal for the LGBT history. There's 12 pictures in the book, one for each month and there's little pieces of texts beside them to accompany the pictures.

Anyway, here's the link to Elisabeth's homepage: http://www.ohlson.se/

It's in Swedish but it's not very hard to navigate trought it so I think you'll manage.

    Wow...

I've always had a mini obsession of sorts when it comes to Joan of Arc. I own several books on her, have watched numerous movies about her, etc. etc. Well I have to say that I have never been more intrigued by Joan of Arc than when I came to After Ellen today and saw the picture of another one of my favorite ladies, Gro Hammerseng as Joan of Arc. Wow, just WOW!

Sarah, you did quite the fine job with photoshopping the other ladies... I wish I had some of your mad skills... I am completely inept at photoshopping.

As a side note on the Gro photo... I wonder if the calendar will be made available for sale to the public (other than in the magazine), I see that it is to be released in an upcoming issue of Henne magazine, but don't know if that is widely available, can it be ordered online, etc.? I'd be happy to get a copy of this calendar, either by procuring a copy of the magazine or buying the calendar (if it is released separately as well).

Any help from the Norwegian After Ellen crowd (or any others) would be much appreciated.

    hi

I can't believe I haven't seen this before. I'm from Norway, and I'll defintely go and have a look on "Henne". There's actually an article about Gro and Katja in the Norwegian tabliod "Se og Hør", whitch I haven't got around to see either. But on the cover it said it was from their personal life.

Gro looks amazing. And I will take this time to congratulate the norwegian handball team with gold in EM! Too bad Gro and Katja aren't on the team anymore...

    "Se og Hør"

"Se og Hør" just taken the interview from "Vi med hund" as the members of GHFF who live in Norway told us and generously enough to translate the interview. It's a cute interview aond fogus on the lovely Pontus. And some cute photos too.

    Gro is fierce

Aaah.. She makes me proud to be Norwegian! She is such a complete athlete, and she deserves all the attention she's getting outside of Norway as well! For those handball fans out there; you've probably heard the good news: The Norwegian handball team won their third consecutive European Championship yesterday - and they did so without Gro and Katja. Such a great game! And congratulations to Spain with your historic first final!

Holy photoshopping skills, Sarah! The LiLo one is made of pure win.

PS: As an extra bonus, here's a link to a more "traditional" calendar. Semi-nude and slightly cheesy pics of Norwegians Gro, Katja, Isabel, Ragnhild and Tonje (who all play for Danish club Ikast).
