Updates on "Grey's" firing: GLAAD statement, Dempsey on "Ellen," and send-off spoilers
I'm still processing all the news rolling in about Brooke Smith's firing from Grey's Anatomy, as well as my own emotions about this (which it's safe to say are not positive, especially in light of all the bad gay rights election news), so I'm going to wait and give you my overall opinion on the firing and de-gaying later in the week. But here are some of the latest updates from the last two days since the news broke. Patrick Dempsey reads a scripted answer about the firing on the Ellen DeGeneres Show today “ABC actually sent me over what I should respond,” Dempsey tells Ellen, then proceeds to read about how it was great working with Smith, but her storyline has just come to an end. “She has been great character and I don’t know what happened with that story line," he added. "They decided not to continue it for some reason.” Watch a video clip of it here. The best part is when Ellen asks "Is that OK?" and he said, "Well, it is for them." Which about sums it up. Sounds like he's as in the dark as everyone else about this. Entertainment Weekly leaks spoilers about how Erica and Callie's relationship ends this week EW.com's Michael Ausiello provides background on the storyline that leads up to Erica going out to her car and driving away from the show for good.
If this happens, I will lose even more respect for Grey's. Which I didn't think was actually possible. GLAAD responds to the firing GLAAD issued a statement yesterday re-iterating Shonda's position that it was bad chemistry and not the lesbian relationship that was to blame for the firing. They focused on Rhimes' reference to Callie as a lesbian, instead of bisexual:
This doesn't make any sense, since the writers clearly had Callie decide she was bisexual, not gay, in the Grey's episode that aired only a few days before. Even if Callie's actual words in the episode hadn't made that clear, all the sex with Mark Sloane did. Given this, and the spoiler about how Erica and Callie's relationship ends, it seems obvious that Shonda simply substituted the word "lesbian" for "bisexual," either because calling her a lesbian justified her argument better, or she thought it would be more palatable (Americans still aren't comfortable with the word "bisexual"), or she just couldn't be bothered to differentiate between the two (straight people often call bisexual women "lesbians"). I suspect GLAAD may know this and just be trying to back Shonda into making Callie a lesbian, but I don't think it'll work, and worse, their statement is leading to headlines like this one on IMDB today: "Gay Groups Praise Grey's Anatomy." Rumor No. 1: ABC fired Brooke because they were deluged with complaints after last week's Callica scenes According to this blog post, after Callie and Erica got together on Grey's, "about a million people wrote Disney and told the company that they will never, ever again take their children to Disneyworld EVER." The blogger doesn't cite any sources for this, because it isn't true — Smith was let go before that episode aired. Rumor No. 2: Sara Ramirez is also leaving, later in the season This rumor has been incorrectly attributed to AfterEllen.com, based on comments left by readers on our initial Grey's article. I just want to make it clear that we don't know whether this rumor is true or not; we'll let you know if/when we do. Some sources have told EW that Sara isn't going anywhere, and that Callie and Melissa George's character Sadie will both still be bisexual, but as the Chicago Tribune's Maureen Ryan so wisely points out, "it’s one thing to say a character is bisexual, and it’s another to give that character a full and rich romantic life." I would also add "with a woman," since Grey's has demonstrated they are quite willing to give bisexual characters a rich and full romantic life with a man. EW's PopWatch blog writes an open letter to Brooke Smith They suggest Smith deserves an Emmy for her glasses-and-leaves scene. I agree.

Ahh ABC
How I despise thee...
I will leave it at that for the time being
Hard to believe
yeah i have to agree
Glaad = lame
I am so disappointed in Glaad, you'd think that as an organization that's supposed to stand up for LGBT characters on TV they could have come up with something better than this lame, non-critizising article. Shame on Glaad for just being okay with this! how can they not see what is really going on? are they blind?

Petition for Brooke Smith
There's a petition going around for Brooke Smith here: http://www.petitionspot.com/petitions/hope4hahn
If AfterEllen can sway a large number of followers to sign the petition I think we'll at least leave an impression on ABC and have them second-guessing their blatantly homophobic move.
Signed
Signed, thank you.
Does anyone know a contact address for Brooke?
Who you gonna be if you can't be yourself,
you can't get it from t.v., you can't force it on
anybody else.-- Ani Difranco
You can find that info
You can find that info here, along with other things you could do to help.
In case I messed up the html and the link doesn't work:

signed!
Should this be posted on the Grey's Anatomy post too?
amazing lj-community
can I just say how much I love the lj-erica_callie-community? all the great people over there made this situation slightly more bearable (as much as anyone could make this situation more bearable). I love AfterEllen for their great articles, but this lj-community really rocks as well!! they have ever since it was created and they will until the end of time!

Callie will be straight
Callie will be straight again before I can say homophobic bastards.

I don't know what to say!
It's been a really bizzare couple of says and I'm sure everyone's emotions are running very high, so I'd just like to thank Sarah for being level-headed even though you would probably like to run, screaming to ABC, like everyone else.
I do feel strongly that we need to somehow channel all of this anger and emotion into a useful statement or action. I have noticed many people pointing towards Afterellen as a good place to direct this, especially in the light of GLAAD's frankly pathetic statement.
This isn't just about writing out another gay relationship, it's about abruptly firing an actress because of it, in a very public way. It's also abt ABC seemingly gagging actors and writers. It shouldn't matter whether you liked the storyline or not, it should matter that this is discriminatory and disrespectful to Brooke Smith and the entire LGBT community.
I agree that we need to keep cool heads until rumours have been confirmed or denied conclusively. However, Patrick Dempsey's remarks on Ellen do seem to point towards an unfair dismissal and a decision that was not creative.
well written!
Right now, I feel like AfterEllen is my only voice in this mess! I can understand that Sarah hasn't posted more on this yet, I seem to not be able to refrain from using swear words every time I write about this. I can understand very well how she must feel just the way we all feel, betrayed, f*cked over, discriminated against and just really, really angry.
I'm still hoping that Ellen will invite Brooke to the show, even though Brooke doesn't seem to have any information, which makes sense. ABC wouldn't tell her 'We are firing you because we are homophobic', they told her a lame-ass excuse about how they couldn't writer her anymore. But still, having Brooke on the show would be a very clear sign towards ABC.

Grrr
This whole thing blows big monkey chunks. i too understand GLAAD's position but come on. I just hope Brooke Smith can find something that can showcase her amzing talent. **Sniff** Dr. Hahn. I've already erased all my scheduled recordings of GA from my DVR.

That about sums up how I feel right now too...
I was
I actually started watching Grey's once I heard about the inclusion of a real lesbian relationship. It warmed my heart to see the characters treated so honestly and openly - and for a bisexual character to receive that same treatment (with her confusion, etc.).
Needless to say, I won't be watching the show anymore. It's network cold feet, for sure. But while it's all business as usual for them, it's a blow to our community.
I just want some real damn
Sign the petition. It's a
I can't remember the exact
studio's have all the power
^ Yeah, I too think that the actors have been told that they can only say that much about the situation! the studio's have so much power over everything, over every creative decision, I honestly doubt that anyone will get any real information from ABC. Plus, I don't think that the big bosses at ABC were stupid enough to actually tell anyone 'We want her gone because she plays gay that well', Shonda can't really speak out because she has a contract as well. I applaud Brooke for doing what she did, I guess now that she no longer works for ABC they can't gag her, but they could still make it harder for her to find a job. disney isn't exactly a small, unimportant company, so I love that she still stood up and spoke out!
http://babydyke.blogspot.com/ - my take on all things lesbian
Grrr.
In the dark cynical recesses of my mind (thank you prop8) I can't help but think that GLAAD has been bought and paid for.
Who know's what money exchanged hands for the consultation and in exchange probably some pretty awesome gag orders. This is Hollywood. The lawyers are stacked 10 deep everytime one group talks to another.
I love that Patrick didn't hide the fact he was given a statement. That was pretty awesome on his part.
Shonda has already failed to put her money where her mouth is and I think with her latest release she just set us up for a double feature.
This is just
This is just awfull.
Dempsey is clueless like everybody else. Seems he doesn't mind since he has his job. Can't really blame him. Cast is silent. I know contracts, money, etc., but not a word of support? Kind of sad.
GLAAD "statement"? WTF? Callie lesbian? Since when? What about Brooke Smith's dismisal?
And Callica ending. If it turns like they say it's worth "The Dumbest Storyline Ending Ever" title. Masters of logic...
My straight sister said not long ago that Erica was, so far, the most interesting character this season. And she was. Other storylines are very weak this year.
After all this I can't see hope for this show. Bailey and Cristina aren't enough to keep it interesting for 40 min.
'Grey's Anatomy' R.I.P.
Actually I think Patrick does mind...
Need I remind you that Patrick was more than likely made to sign something stating he would not discuss the Brooke Smith situation publicly. Hence the piece of paper he whipped out and read from. ABC may be a bunch of pricks but they are no idiots when it comes to business. As much as we'd love think our LGBT opinions matter to them they don't. Because at the end of the day the straight people are what fuel their business needs.
Incidentally, I took Patrick's actions on Ellen to be a clear statement that he is indeed upset over this news. Dempsey may not be a civil rights activist but he is a decent and fair man. Remember he did defend T.R. against Washington's gay slurs a few years back. In my humble opinion those are the people we want on our side.
One of the LGBT community's main issue with this whole debacle is we don't understand why any of the stars will not just say screw ABC, I'm speaking out. I totally get that. I'm feeling it myself right now. One of my clients at work is Focus on the Family. They gave quite a bit of money in support of Prop 8. Do you know how much I'd like to break their site right now? Believe you me I've been tempted. But I am not about to get careless and loose my job. What good would that do? Everybody has their day and I garauntee you when someone exits the show or Grey's is over and done with the truth will come out. I can already tell the people that will have enough back bone to say something...Sara, Patrick, and T.R. being the top 3 on my list.
Nevertheless, right now Patrick is on that show and he can have a wall of shit fall on him if he even breathes a word about what happened. Personally, I do not wish that on him or anyone else on that show. What happened is a tough and it puts all of them in a really ackward spot. I'd much rather hear the story from Brooke then the back fence gossip version.
I totally agree with you.
I agree, Patrick did mind!
his mocking their statement was the only way he was able to show that he didn't like the decision, he can't talk openly. I seriously heart him for that, he did what he could!!
I just keep thinking that nobody has any real information, except for the studio executives and maybe shonda. I'm certain that the execs didn't go around, telling everyone that they want Erica gone because she's gay. They probably discussed this in a very private meeting, took their decision and told Shonda and reminded her of her contract and that she's not allowed to share information like that.
http://babydyke.blogspot.com/ - my take on all things lesbian
I'm not glaad
Yeah, I'm so leaving ABC and
Yeah, I'm so leaving ABC and Grey's Anatomy. This is even worse than the damn Isaah Washington thing. It seems that the show's creators and ABC execs just don't know how to handle anything at all. Doesn't seem like a very nurturing and inspiring workplace to be as an actor. There's constant reports of actors being unhappy and with stuff like this happening, well I'm just gonna say sayonara and it was cringy while it lasted. Thanks for nothing ABC. Thanks, for nothing.
They are doing so much PR damage control it's not even funny and GLAAD is giving them too much credit, I'm sorry but it's true. This is so messed up beyond belief. It's like Hollywood and California's been given some kind of anti-gay vaccination or something. Prop 8, and this. Ef it.
more drama here than actually on Grey's
So disappointed
I get the feeling that Patrick isn't particularly happy about it either. Normally actors don't pull out the message they are 'supposed' to say, and I think he deliberatly does that to make a point.
This is whole situation is just so sad and heartbreaking to me. Just when we get to the point it might've gotten really interesting, this happens. But I love the fact that the whole community seems to be mad, because now I don't have to feel like I'm going through this alone. And my brain tells me, it's just a tv show, but you know what, this storyline could've been such a change for the portrayal of lesbians... one big disappointment. And it's going to take me a long time to get over this. In a way I'd kinda like it if Sara left too. Let her go back to Broadway, or whatever, this show doesn't deserve her.
Oh, and I looove Brooke, since the first time I saw her on screen, she's such a beautiful and cool person. It still doesn't make sense to me that she gets fired for something the writers have done...
I can't wait for an interview with either one of the two, would love to hear their thoughts at this moment.

ABC so long
I signed the petition too,
I signed the petition too, while I don't actually have any hope it will get her back on the show. I'm not sure I want her to have to stoop to that level.
But I do think the petition is important in that it will show abc we are not going to stand for this.
This is the first time I'm
This is the first time I'm really mad because of a tv show. I loved Greys from the beginning but I was tired to always see the same happening there.
Then there were Callie and Erica. I really liked watching Greys again, but than this happened. I read it first on Tuesday morning (I live in Germany) and now its Wednesday evening and I'm still more than pissed!!!
And now this? Now they want to end their storyline like this? This is just f***ing bs! From minute to minute my mood gets from bad to worse.
GLAAD is LAAME!
Oh my word...I am not sure where to turn first with all the parties involved who are shoveling this manure and calling it roses.
Yeah, do they really think we are that dumb?
Please folks...use the link Sarah provided to the GLAAD site where they posted their official statement...and register (it is easy to do and just takes a couple of minutes)...so you can add your comments to their site and let them know how you feel and what you think about this.
GLAAD needs to know that they are not representing us in this matter.
What a week...
I think the best thing we can do right now
Is sit back and wait. All the rumors are getting everyone in a complete uproar and we don't even know what officially happened. Knowing Brooke, she'll end up on Ellen or in an inverview with Ausiello explaining what happened sometime after her last episode airs.
I'm not confident that ABC will do anything. ESPECIALLY now that Prop 8 passed. Cultural regression people. It sucks, but right now, there's nothing we can do except get our voices heard.
I do suggest signing the above petition. Also - grab an "ABC can suck it!" shirt here: http://www.zazzle.com/alyssagiardino/find/qs-/sd-desc/st-popularity

GLAAD
Oh, please ... GLAAD really means "Gay Lads And Adoring Daddies!" This "advocacy" group is completely toothless when it comes to dealing with dealing with queer women and that makes it less than useless. As long as they have guys snogging (Kevin and Scotty on Brothers and Sisters) everything is fine, fine, fine in their little ABC-loving universe.
BTW: GLAAD, Callie is bi - you worthless corporate tools.
So it's ok to be bisexual, but not gay
if you're bi you can stick around on but if you're gay, you gotta go. that's the message that grey's anatomy is sending. after prop 8 passing, this is too much for me. I can't believe that such a diverse show can dissappoint like this. and i do not buy the "natrual end of her story line" bullshit. you're writers. there are millions of possible storylines.
"what kind of rat bastard psychotic would play that song right now at this minute?"

Need a rant
I loved the way Dempsey
Even if it wasn't
Even if it wasn't sexuality-related (which it blatantly seems to be) I'd still be pissed. T.R. Knight and Katherine Heigl still have their jobs after the far more negatively received George/Izzie pairing, so the chemistry excuse is pathetic. The way they treated Brooke is deplorable and the character (basing this on Brooke's interview, Erica's not getting a decent, satisfying exit) is awful also. I've heard some speculation about Brooke's image also playing a part, and that's hugely offensive too. (And just wrong, Brooke is a gorgeous woman).
If they just didn't like the character, why not just say that? And people clearly *did* like her, or there wouldn't so many upset fans. It's going to be complete crap whatever flimsy reason they might provide.
